Chenay Bay Beach Resort - Description

Description
Chenay Bay Beach Resort's 30 lush, tropical acres are nestled on a hillside overlooking the Caribbean Sea only 3 miles from Christiansted and 12 miles from the St. Croix (STX) airport. This beach has been voted #1 on St. Croix's north shore. Chenay Bay occupies the site of a former plantation and includes a 19th Century stone windmill and lime kiln.

Resort amenities include an outdoor infinity-edged pool, hot tub, tennis courts, internet access, laundry facilities, and direct beach access.

Cottage choices include "Garden View" with one king bed and "Ocean View" which offers one king bed or two double beds with views of the Caribbean Sea. Every cottage has a fully-equipped kitchenette (including microwave, coffeemaker, refrigerator, stovetop, and toaster) two-chair dining set, ceiling fan, air conditioner, and TV with approximately 100 cable channels.

Dining at Chenay Bay is a delightful experience at "Mahi's" beachfront bar and grill. Enjoy "classic cuisine with a Caribbean flair," as well as a full bar and wine list. The menu offers an array of tastes from casual lunch fare to evening fine dining. Guests may relax in the open air, beachfront environment while enjoying the sights and sounds of the sea. Special dinner events include an all-you-can eat fish fry on Fridays.

During your stay at Chenay Bay, take a trip into downtown Christiansted for duty-free shopping or enjoy the night life. Snorkel, scuba dive, play tennis, take a sunset cruise, visit historic sites, or lie by the pool; do as much or as little as you like.

BEWARE OF BED BUGS! DIRTY COTTAGES 2.0 stars

Chenay Bay Beach Resort, St. Croix, USVI hotel review Visited: February 2010

Beware of Bed Bugs! When we arrived home from a 7 night stay at Chenay Bay Resort, my husband and I started itching with welts all over the back of our arms, legs and back. I previously read on Trip Advisor that a couple stayed at La Chenay and also received bed bug bites. If you read some reviews on Trip Advisor, other people have made comments about their stay at Chenay Bay. The comments warn travelers to bring bug spray as you will get eaten alive. But they are mistaken, there were no mosquitoes to be seen. The evening before we left, there was a lady at the pool with about 50 bites on her ankle. She thought they were mosquito bites. They are not mosquito bites, they are BED BUG BITES! Added to the horror of bed bugs, the mattress is hard, the 3 standards pillows are old and flat and the sheets are the texture of cheese cloth. I would not let my dog sleep on those pillows. The pillows should be thrown out, the mattress fumigated or encased in plastic. Pray you don't get cottage #14 as it definitely has several problems.

We stayed the same week as the dissatisfied travelers from NJ. We also experienced a dirty cottage and we DID have to purchase cleaning supplies. I purchased bleach and dishwashing liquid, (which are not cheap in St. Croix) as the shower floor was moldy and slimly. After pouring 2/3 of a bottle of bleach and dishwashing liquid on the shower floor and let it set for 5 hours, the shower was still a bit funky, although we could now shower with relief that we would not come back home with toenail fungus.

The toilet constantly ran and had hard water deposit stains in the bowl, the bathroom sink and faucet was full of spittle stains and water spots from the previous occupant. The shower curtain was nasty and covered in mold on the bottom. Little things like a missing toilet rod made the bathroom a huge disappointment.

In the kitchen, the dishes were put away with grime, so I had to wash all the glassware and bowl. Yes, I said bowl, singular. The kitchen was supplied with only one cereal bowl, and only 2 coffee cups, 1 dirty mug, a few plates., two sauce pans that I used to boil water because the water line was broken during our stay. When it was turned back on the water was cloudy, hence it had to be boiled to make coffee. I wanted to call the front desk to find out when the water would be turned back on, but of course there was no phone service in the room as advertised. The phone never worked in our room and we had to use our cell phone and rack up roaming charges, or walk to the front desk and use their phone to make reservations, etc.

About the front desk... There is woman who runs the front office who never introduced herself, and we did not ask her name. She never smiled and had a bad attitude when asked for extra towels, etc. It's like everything is too much trouble. "Now", is not in their vocabulary. This woman tolerates guests, she does not welcome them. There was only one server at breakfast named, "Evelyn". She was always pleasant and we did receive good service. She is a shinning star among lazy dregs.

We were told by some time share owners that the property has experienced up grades like beds in the pool area, but I would not lay on them because they will probably be infested with bed bugs as I mention earlier. The owners of Chenay Bay need a serious awake up call and should stop allowing money to be spent on outdoor TV's and give some effort to basic maintenance in the cottages. Even the lounge chairs at the pool and on the beach are covered in mold. All they need to do is spray them with bleach to get them clean, but again that would take too much effort. We give this resort an A for location/view, but a D in maintenance and cleanliness making Chaney Bay a poor choice for our 10th wedding anniversary. Buyer Beware!!

It took me almost two weeks to find and decide on this lovely cottage resort with all the amenities my wife could ask for. There was a full kitchen, living room and bedroom all in one studio cottage! It was like being at home.

There was no one banging on walls, and no one above walking around. There was just no noise! 'No nothin!' We had this place all to ourselves - and with a quaint little porch overlooking the beautiful bay. Chenay Bay is Paradise times ten!

Bring Skin So Soft Bug Lotion for the gnats. We only used it twice, but it was good to have. I noticed some reviewers claimed the gnats were bed bugs, but they were not.

There are no bed bugs in the Caribbean. They are called "Asian Tiger Mosquitos." You can't see the gnats or feel them until after they bite and are gone (No See Ems). This small gnat-like bug, really a small mosquito, is present throughout all the Caribbean islands, so avoid the bug spray and bring the lotion and you'll be fine.

What a great place to vacation! 3.0 stars

We were celebrating our 46th wedding anniversary, and wanted a nice, laid-back place to relax, but also have water activities. This was it!

Victor, the property manager, was visible daily and wanted to know of any problems and/or suggestions for improvement to our stay. He was very amiable and had lots innovative ideas to upgrade the property.

We stayed in cottage #49 and it had the best view. It overlooked the ocean, and outlying island, and the side of the pool/hot tub. Our cottage needed some up-dating, but we assumed it would happen eventually as Victor continues to improve the property. He has done an outstanding job since his "takeover".

We had no problems. The front desk staff, namely Ms. Chenay, was always very helpful answering any of our questions.

We recommend Chenay Bay Beach Resort for a calm, relaxing vacation treat. Rent a car since it is about three miles from Christiansted and grocery stores.

The resort restaurant, Shores, was very good, but you do tire of the menu. Cheeseburgers in Paradise is a two-minute drive, and it was fun (especially Tuesday for Crab Races). It was great. They served huge burgers and the best onion rings.

We took our GPS, but had trouble acquiring satellite signals. It worked twice that week.

For many years we have vacation in St. Croix with our family. Now that our children have grown up and have went to college we no longer rent a home on the Island. So for an easy and inexpensive way
We decided to stay at Cheney Bay, because we enjoy the place so much.
From March 13th to March 18th we vacation at your place Unit #37.
Our room was quaint and clean, with an OK view of the Ocean. But the problem seem to be at night,
At first I thought it was (no-seemes) those pesty little bugs biting us. But when I got home and noticed Bed Bugs I freaked!
I check the Internet to see what the symptoms where and low and behold Bed Bug Bites. I was reluctant write but I felt I had too. I enjoy the trip very much and I want to see if any one has the same complaint as I do.
When home, I had to fumigate my bedroom and luggage because of those little pests.
I hope you can correct the problem, because I would love to come back next year.

Very nice to hear comments from our resort guests particularly those who have seen the positive changes over the last 18 months. We always appreciate guests taking time to highlight their resort experience. Our number one goal is to deliver a quality resort experience including guest safety. Upon reading your comments, the resort manager was immediately contacted. That unit was taken out of service for a detailed health and safety inspection. When inspected, no evidence of bed bugs was found. Our repeat inspection protocol will be followed to ensure that no trace might have been missed.

The safety and well-being of our resort guests is always top of mind for all our staff. When you plan your return visit, you can be assured only a friendly resort staff will greet you…no bed bugs.
