Gallery Inn - Description

Description
Out of the way, but in the middle of humming Old San Juan, The Gallery Inn is as its name states, an art gallery. Full of fascinating sculpture, pottery, paintings of all kinds, antiques, books, and a profusion of tropical plants, this charming inn of only 22 rooms provides an authentic old-world experience in contrast to most accommodations in San Juan.

Just minutes from all the modern high rise resorts and clutter of "new" San Juan, this seaside gallery tucked into the hillside of Old San Juan and neighboring apartments and shops, began its life as the Spanish army officer's quarters in the 17th century. Situated between the two expansive clifftop Spanish forts, El Morro and San Cristobal on the Spanish-settled promontory, the completely restored Gallery Inn reflects the true history and flavor of this vibrant island.

The cobblestone courtyard with gurgling fountains,
sculptures and tropical flowers welcomes you into the gallery. Very helpful English-speaking staff
assists with your informal check-in and getting settled in one of the suites or rooms that are scattered throughout the building.

Rooftop patios, lovely sea views, winding staircases, open courtyards, the sunken garden and swimming pool, Spanish and antique furnishings spice up this unique inn. The Top Suites offer, living room, parlour area, bedroom, bath, courtyards, a private jacuzzi, high-rise patios overlooking the seawall and both forts. Coffee, juice, pop, tea, snacks, and a full honor bar are available downstairs, just help yourself. Each room is different, offering
something for every taste and budget.

Bring good, comfortable walking shoes to San Juan. Within a mile radius of The Gallery Inn are enough historical forts, churches, museums, galleries,
restaurants, shops, and waterfronts to wear out even the sturdiest Nike's.
There are lots of old buildings to see here, dating back to the first tower
built by Spain's Carlos I in 1540. The area is an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, private homes, commercial businesses, historic buildings, and
tourist attractions.

Good food can be found on every street in Old San Juan. The dining room at The Gallery Inn serves special dinners, reservations are required in advance.

Join in the family-style feasts prepared by owner Jan D'Esopo. The international flavor of San Juan lends itself to a vast array of restaurant
choices within a few blocks, everything from fast food to six-course elegant dinners. Many cafes close by offer outdoor dining with great selections of gourmet foods and wines.

It was a great place with a bit of history. 3.0 stars

This was an absolutely great place to stay, but let me say -- when we pulled up, we were a bit worried. Just remember, this is more of a bed and breakfast. It is not a fancy hotel with all the amenities. It is a home, that is what made the stay so memorable.

We had a large group. One of our party really made use of the piano while the rest of us joined the owner (and her bird) in singing. You can walk to all of Old San Juan to see all of the historic sites. We took a cab to the public beach a few evenings and did spend our last night in one of those resorts.

I definitely plan to return on my next trip. They will make you feel very welcomed here. It was very homey, very historic.

Gallery Inn is a romantic jewel in Old San Juan. My husband and I fell in love again while staying at The Gallery Inn.

The gardens and pool terrace were the perfect setting to spend days relaxing, and the rooms were so comfortable, unique and charming. Each room was artistically designed by the owner, and the staff really seemed to consider where to place you based on your specific needs.

There were no TVs or in room Internet, so there was no distraction from romance. The honor bar was well stocked, and the coffee was fantastic. Also, each evening the owners asked us to join them for wine and cheese, and helped us decide where to have the perfect dinner.

The nightlife in Old San Juan is mature and all within walking distance. This place was simply lovely and good for my marriage!

If I was a hippie and back in the sixties I might of liked the place. The so called art is too much. Every square inch of wall is covered with no taught to it. Poor service, cheap breakfast, no TV, not very clean room, 20 sec of hot water. This was the honeymoon sweet the most expensive they had. Only stayed there because my original booking at another hotel was bumped and couldn't find a room at any other hotel. Next time I will bring a sleeping bag.

PS Most cab drivers never heard of the place and that tells you a lot.

Both my friend and I thought this place was delightful. It was very Bohemian!

The staff was a joy - very friendly. It was in a wonderful location. It was like staying in someone's home (and it is!).
