Grand Lucayan, Grand Bahama Island hotel review Visited: June 2005

My wife and I really enjoyed our four-night stay at the Westin Resort in Freeport. The room and beds were very comfortable, and our view was fabulous.
The marketplace across the street was excellent for shopping and bar hopping. I found the food on the island to be average in quality - and a bit expensive.
However, here are some tips. Avoid Tiajauna's, unless you want to spend $9.00 for a bad margarita and enjoy nachos made with Cheese Whiz.
I thought the seafood dinner buffet at Willy Broadleafs in the Westin was very good. The cost was $49.00 per person, but they served endless spiny lobster tails, shrimp, tuna, snapper, steak, etc.. This price included soft drinks and tip.
On whole, the food in the resort was good. We had a good burger and fries at the China Grill, and the breakfast buffet was decent for $16.00.
For the best Bahama Mama, try Rum Runners in the marketplace. The place was a little dingy, but a lot of fun. They also had very good fried shrimp and conch, to my surprise. The maketplace also had some spots for an inexpensive breakfast. I found the Carribean Cafe to be the best in quality of food and service.
Our favorite place for dinner was the Stoned Crab. They had good food, drinks, and service and right on the Tiano Beach.

This was my first time in the Caribbean. Not only was it in a great place, it was also for a great event: my sister's wedding!
Everything was so nice. The hotel was so neat, and the staff was always kind and ready to make us feel at home. The pools were the best part of it all: they blended in with the beach in a unique way I had never seen before.
Also, the food and the atmosphere were both exceptional. They served wonderful local beverages and cognac together in the hotel bar, which had an old style classic bar appeal. It was super.
The rooms were fantastic, and the beds were huge. It was really a great place to stay.

We had a two-night stay at the Sheraton as part of a package with Discovery Cruise lines, which provided the day sail to and from Port Everglades (Ft. Lauderdale).
The beach was first class with white sand and beautiful clear turquoise water. Unfortunately, the water temperature in the ocean was a bit brisk, and the extensive and picturesque pools were hardly any warmer. They didn't seem heated much, if at all. Thus, even though the weather was nice, we saw very few people in the water.
Not surprisingly, the restaurants in the hotel complex were upscale and rather expensive, even the one by the pool. We mostly wound up eating in restaurants in the nearby Lucaya Marketplace, which were much more reasonable and more than adequate.
We were given a room that looked inland and overlooked an extensive roof. We don't know why they didn't offer us an ocean view, since it appeared that the hotel was at most 1/3 occupied and many ocean view rooms were vacant. Maybe we should have asked for an upgrade.
The room was spacious and in reasonably good condition, but the bathroom was quite small in comparison with no vanity top space, which was inconvenient.
The staff was mostly courteous and friendly. Overall, we felt the resort was worthwhile.

We stayed at the Westin at Our Lucaya in August, 2004. The resort was broken up into three pieces, going from right to left if facing the ocean: The Sheraton, The Westin - Breakers Cay and the Westin - Lighthouse Point.
The Sheraton was a long building with approximately four floors. The Westin Breaker's Cay was a ten-story building, and the Westin Lighthouse Point was a series of two-story buildings. The Sheraton and Breaker's Cay were previously owned resorts that Starwood bought and refurbished. They then built the new Lighthouse Point area and tied all three areas together with paths and pools and restaurants.
There were eight pools, including two infinity pools (one with a swim-up bar). There was a giant water slide at one of the Sheraton pools. There was never a problem with available lounge chairs and as long as you didn't mind shifting, there was plenty of shade even without an umbrella.
The beach/ocean was very well maintained and there were many lounge chairs (and help to set it up) available. Another nice touch was the number of lifeguards and security at every pool and along the beaches.
We didn't spend much time at the Sheraton pools, but instead went between the pools outside our buiding and the gorgeous infinity pool outside Lighthouse Point. Lighthouse Point seemed much quieter and would be a great choice if you're traveling without children. We had our two boys (9 and 10) with us, so they were happy swimming or snorkeling.
Our rooms were great - we had a one-bedroom suite which included a separate living room/kitchen combo, bedroom with one king size bed and huge bath and another adjoining bedroom with two double beds and bath. There was plenty of room for the four of us!
The cleaning staff was great - our room was typically cleaned by noon every day. I usually tried to expedite this by speaking to the housekeeping staff to let them know our typical schedule and when we liked to have the room cleaned. Sometimes that worked, sometimes it didn't, but it doesn't hurt to let them know!
Everyone was very courteous and we never experienced any bad service. We did not eat at any of the restaurants on the resort, mainly because there were much cheaper options across the street at Port Lucaya, including a Domino's, Subway and Dunkin' Donuts. (If you go, try the Italian restaurant La Dolce Vita - it was excellent). There was a brand new casino on the property that was clean and well run. It reminded me of a small Vegas strip casino.
All in all, we had a great experience. My husband is Starwood Platinum because of his work demands, and consequently we have stayed at many Starwood resorts. This was one of the nicest and well run we have been to.
