Sea Cliff Cottages - Description

Description
Overlooking the sea on Dominica's northeast coast, these five cottages are an eco tourist delight. Equipped for short or longer term holidays, the Sea Cliff Cottages all have full kitchens, bathrooms, sitting rooms and balconies. There is plenty of space for families in the larger cottages and the smaller cottages provide a romantic getaway for couples.

The cottages are run with solar electric power and Solar hot water heaters which provide the water for your shower and kitchen. Amenities include cable TV, CD players, radio, a cell phone as well as free wifi for those who have their laptops or iPhones. The kitchens are fully equipped with cookware, coffee makers, juicers etc. Towels and linens are provided as well.

The Sea Cliff Cottages are on a country lane along the ocean. The property is planted with fruit trees, flowers and palms. With three acres everyone has their privacy to enjoy the outdoors. The views are wonderful with a view over Hodges Bay and mountains to the south. The beach is about a five minute walk down the path and there you can find a small reef for snorkeling, sandy beach for swimming and a fresh water river to dive into and rinse off after a day at the beach.

The cottages are perfect for the more independent and selective traveler who wishes to be a part of the island experience instead of just observing it. Sea Cliff is a place to relax, hike, swim, birdwatch and learn about the wonders of the land. Photographers and artists will be delighted with the scenery as will everyone else.

Area Description:

There are several beaches within walking distance for swimming as well as places to hike and explore. A lovely secluded waterfall and pool is found about three miles away which provides a perfect spot to swim and picnic. If you walk up into the hills behind Sea Cliff you will find small farms growing banana, citrus, avocado and root crops. Parrots can be found nesting in the trees not to mention the views overlooking the mountains and ocean are truly breathtaking.

Woodfordhill beach and Turtle Beach, about two miles away, are known for the giant sea turtles coming in to lay their eggs. An incredible sight if you are lucky enough to be there at the right time.

The village of Calibishie is about a mile or a twenty minute walk. There you will find restaurants, grocery stores and the post office. The people are friendly and helpful so it is easy to make contact and learn about the diverse culture of this island.

The Carib territory is just a few miles south of Calibishie and there you can meet talented craftspeople who create baskets and carvings unique in their patterns and designs. Just a bit further takes you into the rain forest. For those who like to dive, the Cabrits Dive centre is about 12 miles away in the other direction along with the historic Fort Shirley and Cabrits Park.

My wife and I stayed at Sea Cliff Cottages in January 2007, and it was a fantastic place to stay on the north end of the island.

The nice clean cottage we stayed in had plenty of room, and the full kitchen was great. The beautiful ocean view was just like in the web page photos.

My wife and I love adventure traveling to less developed, not so touristy areas, and the beautiful primal rain forest covered mountains, great snorkeling areas, and friendly natives really fit the bill for us.

In addition, Gwen and Jim at Sea Cliff were great hosts, and were very helpful in pointing out places to go and see.

We highly recommend a trip to Dominica and Sea Cliff Cottages as the place to stay - especially when exploring the north half of the island.

We stayed in the one-bedroom house, and it was perfect! It was beautiful, clean, well supplied, and provided a heavenly view.

The staff here was simply "made for the job of making people happy". They made sure we had any and everything we needed at any time we needed it. We will visit Dominica again just to be with them again.

I almost don’t want people to find out about this little spot in paradise. The cottages are about the best accommodations on the island, with a view fit for a king. If you like trails, rivers, jungles and lots of fresh fruit and fish, this is the place for you. The studio is fine for one or two people and it offers the best views. There are also two- and three-bedroom accommodations available. Town is nearby, but rent a car if you want to see the island up-close. My friends and I came by private plane during our 30-day island hopping mission and were able to see the entire island from above; it was amazing.

My family and I stayed in the Oceanview Cottage next door (owned by the same family) and saw the inside of one of the Sea Cliff Cottaqes.
This is a cluster of four homes/cottages each self-sufficent and well appointed.

The walk to town is a good 20 minutes with a couple of restaurants and friendly people. We did our 6 day vacation without a car - hiring the grounds keeper to drive us around, it was OK but we'll rent a car next time.

The walk to the beach involves a long, steep (maybe muddy) climb that anyone in reasonable shape and flexibilty can handle - but this is more difficult than a steep staircase so judge for yourself. One elderly couple in a cottage were surprised and disappointed by the difficulty. My family, including two children 8 and 11, loved it and had no problem.

The beach is black sand and pure rustic - but it is in a protected cove with an island a few hundred feet off shore and some reasonably good snorkeling.

There is also a fresh water river feeding into the ocean at this point - don't be discouraged if the ocean/river water looks brown and muddy, that just means it recently rained in the mountains and it will clear up to sparkling clear in a few hours.

Overall, highly recommended for a non-touristy vacation; we are going back this year. A word to the wise, keep a couple of gallons of water on hand, the "city" water supply has been known to be out for 12 - 24 hours.
