The Gingerbread House, Trinidad hotel review Visited: December 2010

This bed and breakfast has everything to recommend it: spacious and spotless bedrooms, great location, and charming hosts - not to mention the delicious breakfasts!
The house itself is a beautifully restored traditional Trinidad house, with lattice work around the roof. The wide veranda is shaded by ferns, and the back garden features a plunge pool - so there's always somewhere to cool off. Who wants to stay in air-conditioning all the time when it's so lovely outside?
Just over a block away is Ariapita Avenue, which offers the widest variety of restaurants and bars in the island. The ferry for Tobago is also quite close (and the Oval, for cricket fans).
Rosy and Bernard are experts on where to go and what to see. They are exceedingly helpful.
It's hard to find any fault with this excellent B&B.

As someone who loves Trinidad but hates big impersonal hotels, The Gingerbread House was a most fortuitous find.
The web site gives a completely accurate description of the facilities of a very superior guesthouse. I cannot express just how much the resident proprietors add to your visit by welcoming you into most parts of their home, engaging in friendly conversations and answering all sorts of queries while still respecting your privacy.
The house itself was lovingly restored by them and has authentic architectural charm, while the en- suite guest rooms are cool and spacious. You can enjoy a full cooked breakfast, and a shady garden with recliners and a small pool which enable you to escape the heat (in a country like Trinidad you really should not wish to spend much of the daylight hours indoors!).
The location is away from the noise and dust of central Port of Spain, but still within a kilometer or so of a compact capital city. There is a good range of restaurants quite close, the superb Veni Mange being the nearest.
I may see you there!

Rosemary was a great host. She cooked us breakfast every morning, and was very helpful in advising us on how to best spend our time in Trinidad.
The house was beautiful. The trip was one of our most memorable, and the quality of the lodging played a significant role in making it a success.

The Gingerbread House is an oasis from the bustle of Port of Spain, well-placed for the ferry port, the bus terminus, not forgetting Queen's Park Oval and lots of places to eat and drink.
We stayed in the front bedroom (family room) for a week. We had comfy beds, a spacious en-suite bathroom, plenty of storage space for bits and pieces, plus a TV for husband and 13-year-old son to keep up with the English Premier League!
Rosemary and Bernard Mackay have carefully restored the old house. It is a charming blend of old and new, welcoming and comfortable.
Every morning, sustained by Rosie's full Anglo-Caribbean breakfast, we sallied forth either to watch England lose the Test match at Queen's Park Oval or to explore Port of Spain and further afield knowing we could return to cool down in the splash pool or relax in the garden before going out again.
Rosie Mackay has lived in Trinidad for over 30 years, and her advice on getting round, where to eat, and what to avoid is as good as a guidebook. We used to consult "The Oracle" most days and she never failed us. Nothing was too much trouble for Rosie and we all soon felt at home.
Do visit The Gingerbread House, you will not be disappointed.
