Bahamian island for sale: $12 million to start Wednesday, June 27, 2007 07:52 AM
"In 1986, a Florida millionaire named Jack Holcomb went island shopping in the Bahamas,” reports Nicholas Spangler for Miami Herald. “He was a man who valued privacy and safety over a fancy address, and the place he took had both. Leaf Cay was a 15-acre wilderness 270 miles off the Florida coast, and it hadn’t been hit by a hurricane in 102 years.” “He bought it for $225,000 and says he spent $25 million on improvements,” reports Nicholas Spangler for Miami Herald. “But now Holcomb, 79, is sick, and he’s auctioning the place off Thursday for a starting bid of $12 million.” “What do you get for that kind of money?” “The basics: 19 buildings, a dock, a crane, an airstrip, buried fuel tanks and two cisterns backed up by a desalinization plant. Electricity from a distant cay, supplied by a 7.5-mile undersea cable; generators, in case the cable breaks; solar panels, in case the generators break.” “Nice.” “But there’s also a freezer building with enough food storage to last a family five years and a communications building with a radar system capable of tracking weather, ships and aircraft within a 120-mile radius,” reports Nicholas Spangler for Miami Herald.
Leaf Cay, Central Exumas, is a private island in the Bahamas that is up for auction on June 28 at the Harbor Beach Marriott in Ft. Lauderdale.
