On Anguilla's North Shore, rugged and picturesque, Captains Bay is lined with dramatic coral cliff formations. The beach is a wide stretch of white sand cornered at both ends by rock cliffs. It is now possible to reach the beach by walking the cliff road east of Island Harbour. The waters off this beach often carry a strong undertow, and it is not recommended for swimming. It is ideal for a picnic lunch. Take along a pair of hiking boots and wander through the rock formations along the coast or take the dirt track all the way to the eastern end of the island. (close)

O. Melsadis Fleming. Original paintings and pottery. A variety of gift items. Creator of the "Anguilla Goat" Open afternoons from 3 pm and weekends or call for appointment. Located in The Valley, follow the road past Koal Keel to the studio.
Born and raised on Anguilla, Melsadis is one of a growing number of professional artists on the island. She uses her art to express her love of the Caribbean and its people.
Working mainly in acrylics on canvas her paintings are strongly influenced by the surrounding beauty of the island. Depicting the traditional architecture in great simplicity is Melsadis’ way of preserving the historical past and its people. Her bright lively colors reflect the clear unspoiled atmosphere of the island.
Melsadis’ painting “Posing in the Light” was chosen as the design for one of the 30 cent stamps of Anguilla. Three Dolphins are pictured deep in the sea in a penetrating beam of sunlight. Beneath the dolphins are pictured many sea creatures and sea grasses. This design is most appropriate as the dolphin is a symbol of Anguilla.
Her paintings were included in the exhibition of Contemporary Caribbean Art organized by UNESCO. This exhibit traveled through out the Caribbean from 1993 until 1997. (close)

Latouche Bay (sometimes known as Katouche) - This tiny beach is at the bottom of Anguilla's only "rain forest". Take the nature walk through Latouche Valley and end up at the beach. Or drive from Crocus Hill to Masara and walk down the easy way.
The long drive down a dirt road is worth the trip to reach Limestone Bay. Quiet, secluded and occasionally the nesting spot for some of Anguilla's sea turtles and the island's iguana.
Little Bay is Anguilla's best kept secret, a tiny quiet beach, fantastic snorkelling. You can get there by climbing down the cliff but a better way is to take Carl's water taxi from Crocus Bay.

Original Caribbean and international genre paintings in oil and watercolor.
Lynne Bernbaum explores the geometry within nature and the nature
of geometry within fine art by responding to a variety of external stimuli
found in her surroundings on the Caribbean island of Anguilla, where she has lived and worked for the past decade, as well as from within her own vastly fertile imagination. By overlaying the elements of pattern, subject, color palette and composition with a refinement of style and a 'whimsical seriousness', she achieves startling and graphically compelling results in her paintings. In Lynne's work one sees a dichotomy in the straight
forward, controlled (sometimes almost somber) aspect, played against a playful, buoyant merging of subject and design that fit together like pieces of an elegant puzzle. Underlying each of her works, whether in watercolor or oils, is a sound foundation of the highest precepts of serious art. (close)

You may not believe it, but Anguilla has a jungle. You enter a path from the beach, skirting the edge of a spooky swamp through dead gray trees (victims of of Hurricane Luis, which destroyed all the vegetation in this valley for about 100 yards from the sea), and then enter lush greenery. As the plants close over you, cutting off the sun, you notice the cool shade and the birds. It is suggested you wear good runners or hiking boots, be prepared to climb a hill, and take a flashlight.
To experience the jungle, go to Katouche Bay (between Crocus Bay and Road Bay/Sandy Ground on the north side). From The Valley, go up Coronation Blvd to Crocus Hill. Turn left at Lloyd’s Hotel (the old Cottage Hospital is on the right). Follow the paved road until it ends, then continue on the main dirt road to Masara Resort. Drive through the resort, down a steep one-lane road to the beach and park. Walk down to the beach; go left about 40 yards and turn left away from the beach. You should find a path that skirts the right edge of a large pond.
The valley is full of lush greenery. Anguillian plants that you are 2' high are 6' to 20' high in this valley. There are also bamboo plants, land crabs, and airplants. Partway up the path, there is an interesting old well on the right.
Katouche Valley is private property belonging to Thomakaty Link Ltd, View Fort, PO Box 42, The Valley. Apply to them for permission to hike in it. (close)
