5.0 stars We loved Rendezvous Bay. Visited: May 2007

We stayed at Rendezvous Bay in early May in a beachfront villa.
The hotel sat on the most gorgeous white sandy beach, and had the feeling of the way the Caribbean used to be.

The accommodations, though somewhat dated, were clean, spacious, and offered plenty of closet and dresser space. The bathroom was large, and had a separate sink area.

What set this place apart was the friendly service of all the staff. The employees here went above and beyond to make our stay perfect.

Also, the on site restaurant, Cedar Grove, was Caribbean gourmet at its finest, and highly recommended to anyone going to Anguilla. There was entertainment there the night we dined - which made it very nice. There were many wonderful restaurants on Anguilla, but this was certainly one of the best!

Unfortunately, the hotel will be razed in August to make way for a new hotel. If you can go this summer, you won't be dissappointed. It was a wonderful and relaxing vacation! We wish we had found this place sooner!

Well, sadly we're back from a beautiful (almost) ten sunny days in Anguilla having stayed probably for the last time at Rendezvous Bay Hotel. This was our seventh year in Anguilla, and our fourth at RBH.

We love RBH. We like the casual beach atmosphere and access to one of the best beaches in the Caribbean. We also appreciate the wonderful personal service from Bart, who greets us with "welcome home" when we arrive. He is also very attentive to our needs.

In addition, we enjoy the wonderful food at Cedar Grove. And, of course, the family golden retrievers who provide "surrogate" dog love while we're away from ours is nice.

We thought we'd found our forever vacation hotel destination when we found RBH, and would have stayed there for years because it offers just the right mix for us at the right price.

The plans for the new property are ambitious and beyond our means. Like many others on this forum, and devotees of RBH, we're searching for similar, alternate places to stay for next year. Any suggestions are welcome.

Knowing this was the last time we would be staying at RBH, we uncharacteristically stayed on the beach at Rendezvous Bay for the entire ten days lounging in the glorious sunshine (often under the umbrella). We swam in the beautiful turquoise waters and did a lot of beach reading. When we left, my husband and I both said a reluctant farewell with misty eyes and even Rex (the Golden) came by early in the morning to say goodbye.

Basically most of our off beach activities this year consisted of eating, so here are our reviews:

Cedar Grove - typically we eat at the restuarant on the property the night of our arrival and departure. This year was no different. In years past we've always had very good meals, but this year Cedar Grove provided the best meals of our trip.

Our first night I had the reknowned fillet of snapper steamed in rice paper, and it was fabulous. We shared the special of fried calamari which was the best we had on the island. I don't recall my husband's meal, but he too said it was great.

On our second visit, I had the snapper in rice paper again because it was so good the first time and I wasn't disappointed. My husband had the Caribbean Bouillabase special of shrimp and scallop thermadore. It was filled with loads of shrimp and scallops in a delicate thermadore sauce with a side of the most tasty rice (brown with currants or some fruit and exotic seasonings).

I believe Cedar Grove is very overlooked by many visitors, and I can't understand why. The food is consistently very good or better, and the setting is beautiful. The executive chef "Smoke" consistently creates exciting, palate pleasing meals. In case you're wondering, I'm not being paid by Cedar Grove for this review!

I paid $170 for a night here, and it looked like a motel in a bad neighborhood.

The beds were okay - just okay. There was no air-conditioning, no television in the room, and the furniture was falling to pieces. Also, mosquitoes abound here.

I would not recommend this place to anyone.

On the upside - the staff was friendly, and the food was good.

My family and I have been coming to Anguilla since 1990. Several years ago we made our way to RBH and loved it.

We have introduced many friends to Anguilla throughout the years, and they have invited us to stay with them in their villas. Also, we would always go to Cedar Grove for dinner.

The beach is one of the most beautiful and it is most often very calm. The rooms are always very clean, and the magnificent beach is only steps away from your room.

After a peaceful morning on the beach, we go to the restaurant for lunch, which is always delicious and refreshing. Then, it is right back to the beach for more calm, rest, and relaxation. Dinner is great, great, great.

Bart has always been helpful, and the staff couldn't be better. We always look forward to seeing the crew every year. Thanks everybody!

This was our first time on Anguilla. Our villa was everything that was advertised and more. While it was air-conditioned, I switched that off the first night we were here because we didn't need it. The evenings were cool, and there was always a nice breeze. The ceiling fan was adequate to keep me cool--and my wife likes temperatures cooler than I do.

We had a beachfront downstairs villa. You could walk out of the louvered doors onto a patio, and then right onto the beach. The beach was advertised as being powder sand and that was no exaggeration. I did find the water a bit chilly, and there were few fish to see in the bay when we snorkeled. Aside from that, I found the staff to be generally helpful but not overly so with the exception of Bart, the manager, who really knows how to pamper his guests.

Perhaps the best thing about Rendezvous Bay was the un-crowded beach. There were many times during the day when I saw no one on the beach at all.

I read comments about the expense on Anguilla. Nothing on Anguilla was cheap with the exception of wine and rum! I would recommend a villa with a kitchen so you can do your own cooking and save a bit.

The food at their restaurant, I thought, was the best on the island.

The rooms had no TV, no radio and no electronic entertainment. Being the gadget freak I am, I thought that might bother me - but it didn’t.

I found a tee shirt here that I think summed up our experience. It read "Do nothing--then rest!”

We are already making reservations for next year.

I think Rendezvous Bay Hotel has the best beach on the island. You walk out the door and there is the ocean with this white powder sand beach. For us, it is idealistic. In anticipation of their closing, we were kind of looking around for other places, but I just can’t see what can compare to Rendezvous Bay Hotel. To say I am bummed that they are closing for renovations, is an understatement.

The villa room was around 20’ x 15’ with a table, two chairs, a small fridge, an easy chair, a large chest for clothes, closet with a safe, an iron and a board. Along with this, there were 1 1/2 bathrooms. One had a sink and plenty of cabinet space, and a large counter top, along with a coffee maker and a 1600w hairdryer. The other one had another cabinet, tub, shower, sink, and toilet.

It was great having the two sinks and such a large storage area. Everything was clean and bright, and our housekeeper kept our room spotless each day. I left her $3.00 per day on the pillow - that was the same amount I leave everywhere.

One great feature of this room was the huge porch - 20’ x 10’ with good quality lawn furniture consisting of a table, two chairs, a chaise lounge and another side chair with footstool. It was so great to sit out there in the morning and have coffee, and in the evening a glass of wine while watching the sunset. It was wonderful.

I have seen a lot of beaches, but never one as nice as this. The sand was like talcum powder, and the water was crystal clear, and as blue as it was in the pictures. It was unbelievable!

The hotel was lined with good quality vinyl strapped lounge chairs, and navy blue umbrellas. There were plenty to go around, so there was never a need to get out there early to claim a spot. The beach was clean - the grounds man cleaned it every day, picking up leaves and any trash that may have been left. Also, there was no seaweed.

Our days were spent on the beach until we got hungry, and then we would head out somewhere and get something to eat, drive around for a while and then come back and hit the beach!

What I wanted from my trip was a comfortable place to sleep, the ability to relax on the beach and go in the ocean without throngs of people, and have good food every day. I wasn't looking for exciting night clubs, just somewhere to get away from the hustle of my home city (Chicago).

For those of you considering Anguilla, this is what I came away with from the island: Rendezvous Bay Hotel and Villas - it couldn't have been more wonderful.

We were in Villa #16, and this end villa offered privacy and peace. We were here right before the busy season, so the beach had no more than ten people on it at a time. The villa itself was wonderful - with great beds, a good shower, clean accommodations, and a stocked full kitchen (though we used only two glasses the entire time)!

As others have written, the villa's location on the beach can't be beat. Thirty feet from the bed, and you're in the ocean! I cherished that part of my trip.

The hotel's restaurant was perfect for breakfast, and we always went with their simple continental breakfast daily (enough toast, fresh croissants, danish, and muffins to keep you full for hours). I had their snapper in rice paper for our arrival dinner, and it was delicious (as was the complimentary rum punch our first night!).

Bart, the manager, was extremely helpful, and we loved talking to Amalia at the front desk (and to our daily waitress, Cindy).

For the price, Rendezvous Bay can't be beat. We visited a few other hotels on the island (Cap Juluca and Cuisinart), and while they were also right on the beach, I can't justify paying their prices. Rendezvous Bay offered the same beach location at a fraction of the cost! It may not offer all the fancy pampering of the bigger guys, but we were here to enjoy the island and the beaches, not live in the room. We also went to the new KU, and really did not like their beach

5.0 stars I don't think you can do better than Rendezvous Bay! Visited: August 2005

As may be the case for some other reviewers, I find myself in a conflict of interest.

On the one hand, I want to sing the praises of a place which provided such a wonderful eight-day vacation. On the other hand, I worry that if I don’t keep my mouth shut, the place will be overbooked or will jack up its prices - or both. I guess I just have to hope that no one reads this review!

Rendezvous Bay Hotel was, without doubt, the best place of its kind to which I have ever been. And in my 60 years, I’ve now been to quite a few places!

Okay, so it was built at least thirty years ago and it was not much more than a cluster of not very imaginative, ochre-colored, one-story concrete structures, sporting only one, dilapidated tennis court and no golf course or swimming pool. I hardly noticed the property as I approached down a half mile country road.

There was the reception building and dress shop on the left, then a game room/library and restaurant further down on the right. But then you see, through a clearing straight ahead, the finest clear blue-green water. And, as you turn right around the bend, you'll see perhaps ten bungalows perched but a few feet from a perfectly pristine beach, stretching a mile at least around the bay, with not much more than groves of sea grapes along its border.

Rendezvous Bay may not rate among the world's ten best beaches in the travel guides or on the Internet. But I doubt any of them are less populated or spoiled, look out on an open horizon with nothing but the mammoth and verdant green mountains rising above St. Maarten in the distance.

Sure, if you want a T.V. in your room, a swimming pool, good water pressure in the bathroom, a fitness center, and more than one excellent restaurant in the hotel to choose from, you'd be better of at a Greek Mediterranean or Moorish confection like nearby Cuisineart or Cap Jaluca (and at much more money).

But if you’re happy with a friendly and helpful, locally-owned, family hotel, with simply appointed bedrooms, an adjacent kitchen, a bathroom and a dressing area, a four-page summary of the N.Y. Times every morning and rental cars available on the premises, I don't think that you can do better than Rendezvous Bay!

Don't read this if: you time the beach attendant to bring you a pina colada, you call the manager if a mosquito gets into your room, you detect rust on the pipe under the toilet tank (why are you looking there?), or you like to compare restaurant service to that of three-star Michelin places you have eaten in. They have a perfectly fantastic place right down the same beach - it's called the Cuisinart.

This place is a slightly older, amazingly friendly, and a very low key affair situated on a magnificent beach. Throw in a restaurant that shines along with arguably one of the greatest hotel managers we have ever met, Bart van Deventer, and you get a week in beach paradise.

If you enjoy a high service, busy resort with lots to do like a Four Seasons or a Westin or an all-inclusive, this is not for you. Here, you'll see Bart several times a day. He makes you feel like you are his only guest, even though this is apparently everyone's reaction. He should be teaching at the Cornell School of Hotel Management.

Anguilla is much smaller and quieter than St. Martin. Get a car and drive around. Rendezvous Bay will take care of it, no problem. Need to buy a little snack on arrival? No problem, we were happily given a lift there and back.

The staff members and other Anguillans are very friendly, down to earth, and happy to dispense whatever info. they could give you about their beautiful island, e.g., where the best curried goat is, where to buy the best meat pies, etc. By the way, we couldn't find a bad meal.

We've been to many places in the Caribbean, but this was just about one of our best weeks ever, thanks to Rendezvous Bay Hotel. Anguilla has a tourism office in the Valley. We stopped in and the lady asked my wife if this was her first trip to Anguilla. My wife said yes. She replied, "Well, it won't be your last!". She's right!

5.0 stars Rendezvous Bay felt like home. Visited: April 2005

Our family returned from Rendezvous Bay Hotel just a few days ago. We miss it already!

I must start by saying that RBH won't be for everyone. It was a wonderfully rustic resort right on the beach - the most beautiful and long beach you may ever see.

The beach villas were very large and clean. We had two (one for the kids and one for my husband and me). They were well maintained by the housekeeping staff (Ann) and refreshed daily. The beach was even cleaned and straightened every day by James. You could never be closer to this gorgeous sea unless you stay here.

We ate at Cedar Grove several times during our eight-day stay. It was fantastic every time. The atmosphere was beautiful in the evening. The dining room staff, headed by Oliver, had the best service on the island and were lots of fun particularly on Jazz Night. Try the snapper in rice paper and lobster ravioli.

Whoever said that Anguilla is not a place for children is crazy. Every Anguillian we met was very kind to our 12- and 14-year olds. They made friends with many of the staff - Lindy on the beach, Dave at the bar along with Simon, and Rebecca singing jazz on Tuesday nights, etc. They also never missed having a pool...the sea was their pool!

Bart, the manager, seemed to run this hotel wonderfully in a quiet sort of way. He and his staff made the difference at this family-owned hotel. This was why it felt like home to us and we were happy to return after our daily excursions to throw open our doors to the beautiful Caribbean Sea.

The resort was not a four- to five-star resort physically, but it was in its heart - and shown through all staff and the service they provided to their guests daily.

Book early, because those of us who come here, rebook immediately!

We would like to highly recommend the Rendezvous Bay Hotel. After months of research and disappointment, we discovered information on Anguilla and this hotel. Our requirements for a ‘resort’ were made a bit complicated by the fact that we were searching for a ‘resort’ that could handle our wedding and a small number of guests. The RBH was perfect for us.

The manager was unobtrusive, but there whenever we needed anything. Bart was gracious, friendly, knowledgeable and paid great attention to minor details.

We were blessed by mother nature with perfect weather for the wedding, and also by the Gumbs family by their choice in Bart as the manager for the RBH.

We can’t wait to go back and enjoy the RBH and the island of Anguilla on future wedding anniversaries. If you are looking for unspoiled beaches, friendly people and a laid back atmosphere, this is it. Toss in Bart for good measure, and you have found your perfect beach vacation! Enjoy.

5.0 stars We had a wedding in paradise. Visited: November 2004
Posted by escistud
My wife and I just returned from our first trip to Anguilla. We actually got married on the island (at Rendezvois Bay Hotel), so this was a special trip for us to begin with. We simply fell in love with Anguilla.

Our stay at Rendezvous Bay was utterly perfect in
every way. Bart, the resident manager, saw to our every need and made sure each of our guests was comfortable and well taken care of.

Of course, the wedding itself went off without a hitch, thanks to the efforts of the entire hotel staff. There were a few passing showers earlier in the day, but fortunately, they passed by late afternoon and we were able to hold the ceremony on the beach as we had always envisioned.

Sprocka played solo on the beach for us, and later on, joined Dumpa for the rest of the evening and provided awesome entertainment for all the guests. Also, the West Indian BBQ buffet dinner we had arranged was, of course, spectacular.

We were lucky to have great weather the rest of the week. Most of our time was spent lounging on the beach or snorkeling.

Our dining experiences were mostly positive. The meals at Rendezvous Bay were superb. We stopped at a couple of roadside trucks (Papa Lash's patties were incredible), as well as the Roti Hut for their huge, delicious, filling platters.

The conch soup at Hungry's Good Food truck wasn't that great. Smokey's was a bit of a disappointment, too. We found the food to be overpriced and not really spectacular. We had one dinner at Malliouhana (great view, great service), one at Tasty's (okay food... again, not spectacular), and one at Cedar Grove at Rendezvous Bay (very, very good).

We went to the Patisserie at Koal Keel for breakfast one morning and were so impressed, we decided we'd come back for dinner a couple of nights later. This was, undeniably, the highlight of our dining experience on Anguilla. Chef Gerow's menu was creative and showed depth and genuine thought. The entire staff at the restaurant treated us like royalty. If you go there, do not miss out on the roasted pork loin, and make sure you ask to be seated in Ambrose's section.

The rest of our meals were mostly sandwiches and such that we put together in our room with supplies purchased from local grocery stores. The best snack bargain we found was the small cup of ice cream at Frannie's for a mere dollar.

Overall, we enjoyed our trip immensely and will definitely be back very soon. We look forward to another wonderful stay at Rendezvous Bay Hotel and Villas.

We just returned from seven wonderful days at Rendezvous Bay Hotel. Staying in a downstairs beach villa with our own private porch and having the beach mostly to ourselves, we experienced the "Caribbean Dream"!

The hotel had great rates compared to some others located on the same beach. The Cedar Grove restaurant of the hotel was also worth a visit. Other favorite restaurants included Bistro Phil, Strawhat, Mango's and Tasty's.

We took a sailboat trip with the charterboat "Chocolat" which took us to Sandy Isle and Pricky Pear Cay. Great snorkeling!
We definitely plan on returning to Rendezvous Bay in Anguilla!

My wife and I recently stayed at Rendezvous Bay and we wanted to pass along a few comments/complements.

The improvements to the rooms from the previous year were great. The new furniture and painting was very nice as was the ongoing improvements to the common area.

The food at Cedar Grove was excellent, especially the dinner. We ate there many times and when we return I am sure we will dine there even more.

The grounds have improved greatly and the addition of hammocks were a nice plus. Frankie, one of the staff members, was kind enough to show us around and explain the improvements. Frankie was very pleasant and we always enjoy speaking with him when we stay here.

The rest of the staff was very nice and responsive, especially Bart and Oliver. Both of them assisted us in a few issues and we found them both to be very genuine and helpful. They are a real asset to the hotel.

We look forward to returning next year.

I wanted to let you know that we had the most wonderful time last month. I simply cannot stop thinking about it. This was the best vacation I have taken in my life - ever. Rendezvous Bay was everything I had hoped it would be - relaxing, friendly, rustically beautiful and entirely authentic.

The beachside villas were awesome. The accommodations fit our needs perfectly, I was so glad we opted for the kitchen. Versalein (I'll get to how wonderful she was later) showed us the other villas and we decided ours was by far the most desirable (although I think the one and only complaint was the king-sized mattress, a little too saggy).

We got to spend some time sailing with Blackie and he was pretty cool, too. After eating at some of the "better" restaurants, we laid claim to Cedar Grove the last few nights. It was by far the best food ever. I am a good cook, but I'll never get that grouper the way you did.

Oliver was wonderful, as was every staff member here. I particularly want to tell you how totally welcoming, efficient and competent Versalein was (don't know if I am spelling her name right). She absolutely bent over backward and did flips for whatever request or question we had. There was such an ease and relaxed efficiency about her. She was particularly helpful with the arrangements.

We also had the pleasure of spending some time (in the water) with Jeremiah Gumbs. What an amazing guy. He recited poetry for us. He shared a poem called "My Mother" with us, he had said I could come to his house and write it down, but I never got the chance. That was the one thing missing. I am saving my pennies now for my next trip. I cannot wait to come back, it was the time of our lives.

This hotel lived up to its reviews.

With an incredible white sand beach, a bright and spacious room (we had a villa), and an onsite manager (Bart) who was incredibly helpful, we were in paradise.

It was one of the first hotels on the island. In certain areas, it needed updating, but I think those were the things that gave Rendezvous its charm and character.

Although this was a vacation, work obligations required I bring my laptop and occasionally check email, which with Barts help, I was able to do as frequently as I desired (I did not desire very much, but when I did, the view from our room made it tolerable).

We went off-season, so we had the beaches to ourselves. Bring some sunscreen and your camera and be prepared for hours of privacy, rest and relaxation.

We cannot wait to return.

I just came back from Rendezvous Bay Hotel. It was a wonderful vacation.

We arrived late at night and were driven right to our little villa cottage on the beach. The manager, Bart, had a table set up in our room with fresh fruit and sandwiches to greet us.

The room was spacious, and when we opened the shuttered doors, we had the most beautiful view of the water and mountains of St. Martin. The sound of the waves put us to sleep. That was just the beginning of a most romantic week in a romantic place.

I am so thankful that we chose Rendezvous Bay, even though it was the oldest hotel on the island. It has aged well and its location in regards to being on the water was better than most hotels. We looked at some very expensive places and saw nothing that was as close to the water!

Also, it was so clean. The floor was washed every day and clean bins of water were placed at both doorways so you could rinse your feet before entering. The beach sand stayed on the beach!

If you want a low-key, friendly atmosphere....this is a great choice. History abounds at this place, the founding father of this hotel still lives here , and even at 90 years of age goes swimming every day. I felt honored to have met Mr. Gumbs who recited poetry and made us laugh as he told jokes.

I can only begin to tell you that this is one place that lived up to my expectations and even surpassed them! Thank you, Bart, and everyone else at Rendezvous Bay Hotel, who made our stay so wonderful! Thank you at Rendezvous Bay Hotel, I will always remember my visit.

Staying at Rendezvous Bay Hotel is like staying with an old family friend. As soon as you drive down the dirt road to the hotel and get a glimpse of that unbelievably blue water, you feel your stress just melt away.

The hotel is older and could use a bit of updating (new bathrooms? upgrade electricity? add a pool?). But the location, the service and the comfort of the place makes you instantly forget about that and transform into someone who all of the sudden doesn't care about those things!

The rooms are large, airy and clean with the most perfect view of the water. The beach villas couldn't be any closer to the beach and falling asleep to the sound of the waves is a memory I treasure long after I return home.

The service at the hotel is unmatched. No five star hotel can compare with Bart and his attention to detail. He never makes you feel like anything is a problem, and will do anything to make you happy and comfortable. The rest of the staff is attentive and cheerful as well.

The food is wonderful and after several visits to Anguilla and eating at almost every restaurant on the island, we can say that Cedar Grove offers some of the best.

If you need a change of scenery, head over to Smokey's for lunch since it's the same chef/owner. The dinners are great, sitting right on the patio over looking the water. Breakfast and lunch could use some updating, but it's good, basic fare.

If you are considering other hotels in Anguilla, just know that you won't find another that is on such a perfect beach, that offers such warm service, good food or reasonable prices. You might get fancier rooms or more amenities, but you'll pay highly for them.

We prefer to stay here and save our money so we can visit the other hotels for meals or spa visits. Then we can return to our "home" at Rendezvous Bay Hotel where we can relax and enjoy the peace and quiet. I highly, highly recommend the hotel and can't wait to return again!
