Betty's Hope is located in the limestone district of Antigua's tranquil rural area, with beautiful vistas over the rolling landscape to the distant ocean. Like other large plantations, Betty's Hope was an agricultural as well as an industrial enterprise, and home to a large number of people. Supervised by a handful of European managers, hundreds of Africans lived out their lives on this and similar plantations, first as slaves, then as laborers after emancipation in 1834. Enduring the hardship of cultivating and processing the sugar under exhausting conditions, they developed great skills as craftsmen, boilers and distillers. Today an active restoration of Betty's Hope is under way. A visitor center has been created by converting a former cotton house storeroom into a museum. This includes various aspects of the plantation's history and shows early estate plans, pictures and maps, artifacts and a model of the central site to giving an overview of the of "Betty's Hope". One of the most beautiful sites in Antigua and a geologist's dream, this natural limestone bridge crosses the raging surf. Keep a respectful distance: stepping out on the bridge is treacherous as a sudden wave can send you flying into the sea. Hence the name? Near the bridge is a natural blow hole that periodically sends out a vertical spray of seawater and air. Stop for a swim off the small adjacent beach. There are no admission hours or fees. (close)

This beach is particularly suitable for children as the waters are usually calm. Rent water sports gear here and dine at fine restaurants nearby. There's even a small grocery store just behind the beach at Antigua Village. For more privacy, settle at the far end near the dive operation. (close)

You can reach this beach by going South from St. John's on the road to Jolly Harbour. Then 1.5 miles before getting to Jolly Harbour, at the end of a village named Jennings, make a right turn and follow the road for about 2.5 miles, all the way to the ocean. An offroad type of car is a great idea as there are quite a few pot-holes. This beach is really undisturbed and good for swimming; if you can also swim for about half a mile and reach Maiden Island.
