5.0 stars It was absolutely wonderful! Visited: June 2003

We took our two sons (then aged 10 & 16), and the whole family had a wonderful time.

We stayed in "The Beach Club at St. James". We took full advantage of the free sailing, my 16-year-old competed against the water sports staff and had a great time (he won every race!).

The beaches were gorgeous and the staff was extremely helpful and friendly - they couldn't do enough to help when my younger son injured his ankle. We would recommend this resort to anyone.

4.0 stars We had a great time and a great holiday! Visited: April 2003

I just got back from a two-week holiday at St. James. I went with my boyfriend.

The resort was great, the food was fantastic and it was just so relaxing. We booked a premium room on an all-inclusive basis. We were upgraded to a bay suite, which had a breathtaking view of the Marmora Bay. We watched great sunsets from our patio.

These suites were very private and looked more like bungalows. There was sort of a lounge area, a massive and very confortable bed and a very big bathroom with a shower room, a big sink surface and a separate bath at the other side.

The rooms weren't new, and there were bits that could be done up, but for the amount of time we spent in the room - would it really matter? We thought the room was very pleasant, spacious and confortable as it was.

The resort gardens were well kept. In fact, we saw them looking after it every day. The restaurants were very nice, all a la carte (apart from themed nights and buffets). Rainbow Garden was very nice, and the food was so well presented.

Saturday was the Gala night at Rainbow's - you dine to the sound of a band. Thursday was the Caribbean Night at the Docksider restaurant. A steel band was playing most of the night, and at 10:00 pm, the limbo dancer/fire eater came on. It was a great show. This was a buffet meal.

We also went to Coco's for a dinner buffet on one of the Fridays (it was Karaoke night at Coco's bar in the Beach Club side) . If it's a windy night, it can be quite funny! Coco's was right on the Atlantic side beach.

Our favorite restaurant was Piccolo's, on the village side. What a great, romantic place to eat. We got a lovely view of the Marmora Bay and the whole setting was so lovely. The food was the best - and so was the service.

From the moment we walked in, until we left, we were looked after. There were enough waiters to make sure our wine was topped up, our water was topped up, and our food was to our liking. We felt great there. The waitresses were very nice on this one.

Some of the waiters in Coco's and Rainbow's were very cold and unpleasant - but then you get the nice ones. We did find that as they got to know you and recognize you, they warmed up to you. The Jacaranda bar staff was very funny and very generous with their alcohol measures!

There were four pools, but my favorite was the Piccolo's fresh pool. It was very nice, but smallish. There was another warm water pool in the village which was usually empty. It was great, apart from being only three feet deep. We were always on the pedalos and kayaks.

The reason why I did not rate this resort five stars was the evening entertainment - it was very low key. But then again, you come here to relax - it is that type of resort. Either way, I miss it already! It was a dreamy resort-and I wish I was there!

2.0 stars Not exactly what we bargained for Visited: March 2003

This resort overall was okay. I would suggest getting an oceanfront room, which is a bit windy but the view is spectacular. We chose the all-inclusive plan. If we could go back in time, we would have opted out of it. The food at the resort was terrible. Service could have been a lot better, considering they market themselves as a deluxe resort. Again, we had an okay time, but we would never return. In my opinion, it?s not worth the money.

3.0 stars Nice location, but really lacking in service. Visited: March 2003
Posted by kbmars
We visited the resort as part of a wedding party in March 2003. We stayed for 6 nights and were on the "All-Inclusive" plan. We found the property in good shape with few signs of wear. We liked the layout and the beaches. The pools are very boring; simple lap pools with a bar hut off to the side. We liked the casino, which is managed by a completely different company, and found the staff there great. They were not locals.

Our major beef with the St. James Club, and it extends to the whole island, is the complete lack of service or a desire to provide it. We ate off the resort once and the restaurant owner reinforced our thoughts. We never had an enjoyable meal. A lot of rolled eyes when we asked for something, even with a smile. We always had to ask for our water glasses to be filled and that was like pulling teeth. The bar staff will look right at you when you walk up to them and not make a move to serve. The one exception was the maid and grounds staff. They were very friendly, always pleasant and always with a smile. I really think the staff believes that we are getting away without tipping when we are staying all-inclusive. We have no intentions to return.

The service and food were terrible. We should have had better for US$5,000 vacation week. If you are planning on going stay at a beachfront room, it is a bit windy, but the view is nice. Don't expect glitz and glamor here, it is very basic resort with minimal amenities. We went all inclusive, I would suggest saving your money and dining elsewhere, except for breakfast as taxis are expensive. We won't return and found that there were a lot of unhappy vacationers when we were there.

My husband and I just returned from a 10-day stay at St. James Club, for the money we were expecting much more. The rooms were okay, nothing special. The staff was mostly local folks who acted like they really didn't want you there. The food was just downright awful.

Anyone thinking about going that is expecting a 4-star resort would be dissapointed, but if you are going expecting less, then you will be fine. We do not plan on returning to St. James Club and hope that they get their act together. We can't understand how some people thought this was a 4- to 5-star resort!

5.0 stars St. James Club provided us a fantastic vacation. Visited: February 2003

We were at the St. James Club for two weeks and absolutely loved it. Our room was an oceanfront room in the newer section, and we had an incredible view of the Atlantic. The room was very spacious with vaulted ceilings a sitting area, a small kitchen area and a huge bath with double sinks. As we were on the Atlantic side also known as the windy beach, we had a constant breeze coming through our room which was great, we never had to use the air conditioner.

Walking around the grounds was spectacular as the gardens were beautiful and extremely well maintained. The resort was spread out over a very large area. We enjoyed the walking, but for guests who did not, there were little carts to take people around. All you do is call the porter’s desk and they will come and pick you up.

The hotel was full when we were here, yet it never seemed crowed as there were so many different areas to go. We loved the cart on the beach - it would go up and down the two beaches from around 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and served refreshments and snacks. We preferred the windy beach because the constant breeze helped to keep us cool. The bay side was also really nice (no breeze), and it was where all the water sports were. Piccolo's Beach Bar (served drinks only) and the Beach BBQ near Docksiders (at the other end of the beach) served BBQ snacks and drinks.

Our favorite restaurant was Docksiders, it was right on the beach and had great food. Piccolo's was located up on the hill in the village overlooking the bay. The food there was also great, but it did not have the sound of the ocean while you were eating (quite romantic). At KoKo's, we found good for lunch and breakfast and it was right on the Atlantic.

The staff here was the best. They were so nice and helpful and they worked very hard to make sure we were happy. It was great.

Men must wear pants and collared shirts in the evening and ladies were not allowed in shorts. It was actually kind of nice to get "dressed for dinner" every night, excluding Thursdays and Sundays which were theme nights and shorts could be worn.

Most nights we would end up at the casino and adjacent bar for after dinner cocktails. It was a good time to hang out with new friends, listen to some music and relax. Drinks were served until 1:00 am. So, if you are looking for a party all night spot, this is not the place for you.

We would highly recommend this resort and would for sure come back again. We totally agree with Pamela from London, England that if you didn't like this place, I think you need to reassess some things.

3.0 stars Some rooms were lacking, but it was a great property. Visited: February 2003

The property was very spread out, which was nice, so that guests were not constantly surrounded by people. The hotel was right on the bay which was ideal for swimming and activities. The pool was great and the fitness area was so-so. One disappontment was that there was no map for the property except for the one in the lobby - but you could figure it out in a day.

The food was good. Our favorite restaurant was Piccolo Mondolo and our other favorite was the Docksider which were both on the water. You could only make reservations the night before from 7:00 pm on, so if there was a particular restaurant you would like to get into, it helps to be at the guest service desk at 7pm. We were glad we did the all-inclusive, as food was expensive and restaurants were not nearby. Taxis were also expensive to take anywhere on the island.

Our basic complaint was our accommodations as we were located in the older section. The air conditioner was on a sensor which was okay, except for at night when you were sleeping and it would be off as it did not sense any activity.

Also, we had to make several phone calls for requests such as an iron, towels or anything that required atttention to the room. However, the rooms were very clean. There was also some painting that was going on in our section which will definitely help.

If you ever have problems make sure to see guest services. Susie was so helpful, so much so, that we would try the St. James Club again.

The St. James Club was not actually my first choice when I booked my holiday to Antigua. I was supposed to be staying at Galley Bay, but this fell through two days before I was due to go and I had to go with my second choice. Having then read all the reviews before jetting off, Iwas a bit apprehensive as a few of them were quite negative.

I am extremely well traveled and always stay in five-star accommodations. I wasnt disappointed!

They offered great drinks, with a cart that drove up and down the beach every hour or so. Although, the drinks lady, who I had read about and was looking forward to seeing in the flesh, was no longer around!

There were four restaurants, but you only had the choice of two every night (they opened alternately). You had to book the night before for where you wanted to eat. But this wasn't an inconvenience as the restaurant choices and menus were pinned up for the next day, and we would check these and book for the next night on our way to dinner that night.

Both the breakfast and lunch provided a good choice of a la carte or buffet. There was always good variety, but the buffet at Cocos was not very nice.

For dinner only men had to have a 'collar'. That could be a t-shirt as long as it had a collar. There were no shorts or three-quarter length trousers, or no sandal-type shoes. Women could wear whatever they wanted, but most dressed up!

The rooms were comfortable, with a TV, but no mini-bar which was fine if you went all-inclusive.

There were about four pools dotted all around the resort and they were almost always secluded. Definitely take the time to discover them. Also, all non-motorised water sports were free.

I totally agreed with the person who said that the staff at the watersports was unhelpful, but everyone-else was lovely - especially the reception staff!

Picolo Mondos was our favorite restaurant - it was definitly the classiest with best presentation of food, and more than enough to eat!(you got about five courses-if you wanted).

I would definitely recommend staying all-inclusive.

The snorkeling was no good. I had to go to Cades Reef (don't use Kokomo Cats-unless you have to).

Also, the Sunday afternoon sunset party at Shirley Heights was a must. This was a great place for couples to enjoy when schools are open (no kids around).

I had an amazing holiday and would come back again for sure!
And for those people who didn't like it-you obviously prefer the 'formalities' of larger, colder hotels which are best kept for business travel.

5.0 stars It was a perfect vacation. Visited: December 2002

My fiance and I planned on getting married in Antigua, so I did lots of research for this trip before choosing the St. James. The reviews on this website helped me in making my decision. It was the best decision I could have made. The resort was beautiful and everyone was so friendly.

We planned to get married on a Tuesday afternoon, but 2 hours before the ceremony was to take place, it rained too hard. We were to get married on the a small hill overlooking the ocean. Suzannah and Monifa, our wedding coordinators worked quickly to move our ceremony to a villa located on the beach.

By the time the ceremony started, the sun was shining bright again. Joe was our photographer, he was so friendly and made us so relaxed for our pictures and they came out beautiful. Our wedding turned out just great thanks to Suzannah and Monifa.

We selected the all inclusive plan, and it was the best choice. We never once had to worry about paying for food. The food was excellent, We dined in all four restaurants on the resort. The Docksider was our favorite, it had a great view overlooking Mamora Bay.

Lunch was either served in one of the restaurants or on the beach (barbecue). This was very convenient, if you wanted to eat but did not want get dressed and dine in the restaurant. There was also a guy named Romaine, who drove a cart around the beach serving the best drinks. You literally could have stayed on the beach the whole day and not worry about a thing, because all your needs were taken care of. They even sold souveniers on the beach.

Unfortunately, there weren't many things to do on the resort in the evening. After dinner, we usually returned to our room. The resort was pretty far from everything and taxis were very expensive.

This was truly the best vacation we ever had, though. We will definitely be returning to the St. James for our first anniversary.

4.0 stars Maintains standard and is improving the odd problem area. Visited: November 2002
Posted by keith1
this was my second visit in two years, and I noticed that standards were being maintained and previous problems were being resolved.

Two aspects attracting criticism last time were old, rusty air conditioners, ,which had all been replaced this visit; and the ludicrous scramble to book dinner at 7.30 each morning to reseve preferred restaurants, which has been changed to booking the day before.

The only area needing some attention is perhaps to tidy up concrete pathways that have some cracks and the remains of some sort of surface covering that has worn away.

5.0 stars A stunning beachfront resort with outstanding, friendly service! Visited: August 2002
Posted by RDuffus2
This was a great high-quality Caribbean property, with fabulous and friendly service, and great food. There was lots to do at the propery - sail, kayak on Mamora Bay, swim in the Caribbean, (they had two beautiful beaches) tennis, and a small fitness center. The hotel was also great for hiking because of the nice hills that surrounded the resort.

There was also lots to do close by - 15 minutes to historic English Harbour. Unfortunately, when I was here last month, most stores were closed. But I was also here in April for Antigua Race Week, and it was absolutley one of the best boating events in the world.

I recommend the St. James Club for couples and families with children.

The love of my life and I just returned from a week in Antigua and it was fabulous! Our stay at the St. James Club helped make it a wondeful vacation.

Our room was very clean and had a nice view of the bay. The staff was great. They accommodated us in every way. One night, they opened up the gift shop after it was closed so we could get a candy bar.

At breakfast, we made a comment to the waiter about the lack of native cuisine at hotels in the Caribbean and they had a native lunch especially prepared for us. The same waiter took us to a native restaurant in town for breakfast the next day.

Another night I had shorts on for dinner (St. James was very formal for dinner - slacks and collared shirts for men, skirts and dresses for women). I changed to slacks, but grumbled to management about how I changed from my $150 linen shorts to my $20 woolblend dockers. At checkout, that meal was deducted from our bill.

While sunning on the beach, we asked a gardener to get us some aloe leaves. He brought us two huge leaves filled with aloe. After we applied the aloe vera gel to our burning areas, we asked the roving beach barmaid (who came around about every 15-20 minutes) if she could make us a drink with the aloe (good for cleansing the body externally and internally). Before she could return, we had gone back to our room. She found out what room we were in and brought the elixir to us. The elixir and the drinks we had on the beach were not even charged to us.

To each person, the staff was very friendly and went out of their way to see that we enjoyed our stay. On our last day here, one of the front desk staff, Lionel, saw us eating in a local restaurant in town and stopped in just to say goodbye to us on his way to work.

We did not stay on the all-inclusive plan, as we figured we would not probably eat and drink the difference between the costs of the EP and all-inclusive Plans. I would recommend staying here on the EP plan. The food was expensive at the hotel, but if you like getting out onto the island, you'll save plenty eating at local restaurants and taking in the full island experience.

We will return to the St. James Club and we highly recommend it!

5.0 stars We found peace and tranquillity! Visited: May 2002

This was the near perfect spot to get away and relax. The service was exceptional, taking into account you are in the Caribbean and the pace is less hurried....the way it should be on vacation!

A beach front, upgraded room is recommended. The room was roomy, comfortable, clean and quiet. The meals were a delight. The presentation was always interesting and varied and they tasted great.

The choice was to go all-inclusive or not, as the resort supported both options. The all-inclusive gave you the best bang for your buck and there was always lots of choices and more than enough food.

The vegetation and look of the resort was pleasant and a stroll around the ocean walk was very beautiful. There were two beaches..... Mamora Beach, being the protected and calm one and Cocos being on the Atlantic side and it was often a little wavy, but much cooler to sit on and read or tan. We snorkeled off Cocos Beach to the nearby reefs and twice it was great, but the third time the water was very cloudy as the waves turned up the bottom.

There was also a $7 twice daily snorkel trip to another nearby reef and it was well worth it and we did this a couple of times.

We went in off season, so the night life was limited, but this was not a problem for us as we were looking for a quiet time anyway.

Overall, it was an excellent resort and measured up very well to several other resorts we have visited in the Caribbean.

4.0 stars Excellent for children, maybe a little tired Visited: April 2002
Posted by crawford_charles
Having just returned and re-read the reviews its time for my own. Picking the bits out of the other reviews, most are fair. The hotel is not of a European 4- or 5-star standard - I have to say that most hotels in Europe exceed those from the USA, but for a family holiday away from work in the Carribean, what more could one ask for.

The dinner reservation system is chaotic and it is a pain to book a table for the next day at 7:00 PM, but you get into the habit and drop by the bar for a drink at the same time. The food is good, certainly not excellent and not poor. The drinks trolley lady comes by once an hour at present, just remember to ask her for sandwiches. The hotel also has a restaurant called Cocos which is never advertisied, but is the best by far.

We had a villa and you needed a degree in science to understand the air-conditioning, but it worked. We had to change villas as the first one flooded, but this was done quickly and efficiently.

I would recommend the hotel, but mainly for children.

3.0 stars The food was excellent - the rooms were average. Visited: April 2002

Some reports panned the St. James, while others praised it. If you have never been to a tropical isle, you'll like it. If you've been to several, you've been to better.

The food was excellent - it was their best asset. The appetizers, soups, entrees, service and views were all very good. The Rainbow Room was all buffet. It was good for big families, but could be noisy.

The house beers were pretty good (Red Stripe and Wadadli). The house wine, Gaston Savignon, was not good. However, the cabernet was not bad. The bar drinks, from pina coladas to Johnnie Walker and Grand Mariner, were excellent.

Our room included a small under-powered air conditioning unit. They were hot and smelled musty. There were ants and mosquitoes, and sloppy and chipped tile made us change after one night.

The ocean side rooms were better, with good ocean views and a nice breeze. But, patching up too many times by too many amateur handy men and covered by too many coats of paint, gave the room the look of an old tenament.

Ocean Beach was about 200 meters long, with plenty of shade and breeze. But there was more rock and eel grass than sand on the bottom. It was not a bad place to spend the day sunning and drinking.

Bay Beach was much calmer, with some silt. It seemed to be good for toddlers and water sports. Snorkling on either beach was not very good.

The foliage on the grounds was excellent. But some areas had too many cracked walkways and walls, and broken ground lighting fixtures.

It won't be the best hotel in the Caribbean until the rooms are the same quality as the food.

3.0 stars Very disappointing! Visited: January 2002
Posted by joanne24
My husband and I planned this long awaited vacation about 1 month in advance expecting more than we bargained for. Upon arrival,(3:00pm) we had to wait 2 1/2 hrs. for our room. I thought that was what reservations were for, so the room is ready when you get there. Me, being 6 months pregnant and dressed in winter clothes was not very happy about the situation.

After finally getting the room to find it a bit run down and the bath room not the cleanest, we made arrangements to go the the beach barbeque. I have never seen a more unorganized mess. We were told that when we were ready, to go get a table and sit down. None of the tables were made up. We had to ask someone hurrying by to get us forks & knives and I forgot to be specific (napkins). Finally got utensils & no napkins. It took 3 people before we got those. Forget about a glass of water. There were plenty of people walking around with pitchers but try to catch one, not easy.

A good portion of the staff wasn't very friendly but some were very nice. The grounds were nice but in need of alot of repair and grooming. Lighting along the walking paths on the Atlantic side would be very nice. The water pressure at shower time was very poor. We had no phone for 2 days.

When sitting on the beach, the drink cart came around only once or twice in a 4-6 hr. period. A long hike to the bar from there. The buffet dinner at the Rainbow Garden was also very unorganized & unfriendly. We had to call out to waitresses who were all shuffeling around to get a drink. Items would run out on the buffet and would take quite some time to be refilled. The Docksider and the Piccolo Mondo were the better of the restaurants but very limited menus unless you wanted to pay extra.

All in all, very disappointing.

On arrival we were put into a rather poky room, with an adjoining door, which provided no insulation against the talking, snoring and cigarette smoke from our neighbors. Fortunately, we were moved the next day on request to a much nicer room located central to pool, restaurant, beaches etc.

Staff was generally friendly and generally efficient enough. Notably unfriendly/aloof/uncommunicative was the staff at the Reef Deck Bar, the Mamora BBQ shack, and the water sports shack. Notably, the most cheerful and friendly was the lady who usually brought drinks to us on the beach.

Many guests commented that the rooms were a little 'tired' with noisy old air conditioners and that minor maintenance was poorly attended to. Our room had an outstanding sea view (which we preferred to the bay view) and was comfortable, but slightly shabby with deficient sink (that got fixed quickly on request) and a damaged insect screen (not fixed).

The meals reflected the victory of quantity and choice over quality. The large restaurants had a slightly 'mass catering' feel to them. Each meal begins with waiting in line to give your details and then be led to a table and seated all by the same member of staff. This can create a frustrating and largely unnecessary bottleneck.

Most of the above problems could be identified and greatly improved if there were better checking and supervision although management was rarely in evidence except at the weekly cocktail party.

The beaches (and grounds) were generally well maintained and agreeable, although not breathtaking. The sea can be cloudy, but there is nearly always reasonable snorkeling to be found in a circuit starting from Coco beach, working you way around the headland into Mamora Bay and back through a rock gap to return to the beach. A few local traders ventured infrequently onto the beach to sell t-shirts, shells, boat trips etc. They were friendly and not intrusive or overly persistent.

Our fellow guests were mainly English and American and by far the majority that we spoke too were definitely enjoying themselves. All were pleasant and friendly.

The hotel provided courtesy rooms on a shared basis after checkout. Retaining ones room for even an hour after 12 noon checkout time would cost 60 US dollars, so if you want this facility, negotiate the charge when booking!

Overall, enjoyed it but wouldn't make a special effort to go back.

My new husband and I were at St. James Club for one week. The resort is very nice, with lovely trees and flowers, well kept and very clean and with two lovely beaches. The staff is also very polite and always smiling.

The only thing that we didn't like that much was the food. We went the first night to the Piccolo Mondo, as we had read good reviews on it, but we didn't have a good impression. First of all it sounds Italian but there isn't one single menu item that could have been Italian. Apart from the names they gave them, the portions are very poor—an empty plate with some delicate sauce around the border of the dish and three pieces of chicken. We woke up the morning after at 6:00 am starving.

And it is not all-inclusive. We had to pay around $18 more, I don't really know for what, as we only ate one appetizer, "three little shrimps" and another entree. The only time we had a chance to really eat was at the buffets. You eat what you like, so I suggest looking out for the buffets. Mind you, we aren't those fat people that want to eat a full table of food, but the "a la carte" dinners were really poor.

The electricity was cut off frequently, as they had problems, and for three afternoons the water wasn't going, so we had to wait a few hours to have a shower. This shouldn't happen 3 days in a row in a 4-star resort.

Another little regret was that the resort is far away from everything, so every time you want to go and see other beaches you have to pay around $30 each way to move out of the resort with a taxi.

So in our opinion, we think that the resort seems to be a 4-star, but on the whole it is more like a 3-star resort.
