This hotel is not what you would imagine. Visited: May 2008

I have just come back from my honeymoon here.

We were given a beachfront room, which was okay. The bed was very comfy, and it was cleaned every day. The beach was stepping stones away, which was great.

However, the food was not at all good. Most nights, I did not eat. The food was cooked to well overdone, and there was not a good selection at all. In the end, I was sick of hamburgers for lunch.

Also, the staff left a lot to be desired. They all looked so miserable. They didn't smile, and it was as if they didn't want to be there. I have stayed in a few hotels in Antigua, so I know that is not the norm.

One day, the trees where trimmed of their large leaves, and the mess was unbelievable. Everything fell on the adult swimming pool area, and it was just left! We could not use the pool -or if we did, we had to fight our way around the dead leaves. It was disgustingly filthy.

I will not go back. I would advise you to check the reviews so you don't waste your money!

We won't go back! Visited: April 2008

The beach and views at this hotel were great. However, everything else was not very good.

We stayed in a beachfront room, and the beach was steps away from our room. The beach was very clean and nice, but the hotel was outdated.

There were ugly gold curtains on the windows, the bed was very hard, and the boxsprings were held up by a piece of a 2 x 4.

The gardens around the hotel were very nice. The service was very, very slow, though.

There was not much to do here, either. The game room consisted of some slot machines and a cheap pool table that was uneven and falling apart.

The food was pretty good ,but there was not much of a selection. Also, there were birds flying all over the Topaz restaurant.

We will never go back.

We had a very enjoyable week! Visited: March 2005

We just got back from our vacation at Pineapple Beach and we had a great time. The weather was perfect - sunny and 85 every day. The manager gave us two upgraded waterfront rooms, one with an oversized balcony, on the second floor. We would sit out in the early morning and late afternoon and enjoy the beautiful view over the bay.

The food was generally very good, but we found the service for two dinners in particular (once in Pineapple Grill and once in Topaz) to be excruciatingly slow. We told the restaurant manager about this. It shouldn't take 45 minutes to get appetizers and two hours in total to eat. We found the drinks tasty, but watered down. Many resorts do this and it sure keeps the drunks in check.

We visited Mary at the Outhouse (a rustic barbecue restaurant) a few times. It was quite a climb to get up there, but it was worth it for the gorgeous view along with the terrific ribs and chicken. Most of the staff was very nice and friendly. One older woman at the snack bar was a bit snippy, though.

We enjoyed the snorkeling down at the end of the beach. There were lots of different and colorful fish, coral and vegetation to see. Even some of the vendors on the beach were entertaining. One fellow named Nubian was quite the philosopher.

My older son enjoyed the beach volleyball every day at 4:00. They also had a horse shoe pitching contest, a croquet contest, a shuffleboard contest and pool aerobics.

We never left the resort during the week except to explore the Long Bay Hotel at the other end of the beach. They had a really scenic bay on the other side of this hotel. We had been to Antigua previously and really didn't feel the need to explore further.

The worst part about the whole trip was the Antigua airport. It was so small and hot, and the function of processing people was so slow, it was almost unbearable. Unfortunately, it was the first and last impression of Antigua, which was otherwise very enjoyable. All in all, it was a great vacation.

We would go back again. Visited: January 2005

Transportation to and from the airport was approximately 25 minutes. The airport was small and really hectic to try and get around.

The hotel was really nice. The grounds were well kept, and our room was clean and nice size - even for three people. In addition, we were only steps from the beach.

The food was pretty good. Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided many selections, and the service was decent.

Entertainment was so-so. We went into St. John's a few times for the casino and to buy some shirts for the kids at home. It
was much cheaper there than on the beach at our resort.

Overall, I thought it was overrated. Visited: February 2004

We just returned to Canada after spending two weeks here. The resort was quite nice, with a good layout and great meals. The beach was wonderful, in fact the island was wonderful (we rented a car for the first week and scooters the second week and we saw a lot of the island). This was the good part.

The bad part....firstly.. be careful if you are assigned to a 'standard' room (in the 400 block). We thought these rooms were terrible... small, no light , musty and just plain dingy. They were not a four-star quality and should not be offered as part of a four-star resort. I suggest they upgrade right away.

We thought the entertainment was very poor. One night it was a Limbo -Fire breather that seemed real lame. There was also a DJ, with the worst speakers I've ever heard. The live band was so-so, but bring ear plugs (half the people there left after the first half hour). There was a drum band, too, that was not too bad.
As for the disco, we went four nights and the maximum number of people there was twelve...swinging!

The resort's casino had two working slots, video poker and a pretty good pool table. The casino in Jolly Harbour was brand new and beautiful.

Basically , there was only one bar, and be prepared to wait for your drinks, they didn't move too quickly.

We travel every year - Cuba, St Martin, San Andres, Barbados and Dominican Republic - so I can compare. This was one of the most expensive trips we made and I rate the whole experience a five out of ten. In Cuba and San Andres (our least expensive trips) we were treated like kings. At Pineapple Beach we were treated like guests.

Lastly...the tourist sites were really so-so. You'd be better to rent a car to see the sites and to explore (you are safe). The people and the beaches were terrific. However, I will not return to this resort.

This was a fabulous getaway! Visited: February 2004

I'm thinking Rachel from Baltimore might be talking about a different place! We couldn't have asked for more at the Pineapple. The people were wonderful and the resort was very nice.

Our room was a little on the smaller side, but in a great place and it was very clean. I consider myself a pretty picky eater and I thought the food was great. There was much to choose from.

The beach was beautiful. My husband and I were on a much needed vacation and were very happy with the choice we made. The hotel was on the other side of the island and was very secluded (not like the Jolly Beach or Sandals which were all one after the other).

Also, the snorkel/picnic trip with Captain Savage was a blast. It was our best day in Antigua. There were about 12 of us and Savage filled a huge cooler with rum punches and beers and packed barbecue chicken and ribs. We ate, drank and snorkeled. It was fabulous!

We have not one bad thing to say about Grand Pineapple. If you want to relax, have fun and sit on a gorgeous beach you should stay at the Pineapple. I would love to go back! We will definitely be returning after checking out a few other islands!

We are always glad to be back. Visited: January 2004

We have just come back from Antigua and we have enjoyed it as much as the first time we visited the resort. It is always a pleasure to be back at the Pineapple as the staff is absolutely wonderful (they make your holiday). Also, the beach is excellent and the food is mouthwatering.

At the Italian restaurant, they have just employed a real Italian chef, Pietro, who prepares excellent Italian dishes (with real Italian flavour). The Pineapple restaurant and the Topaz are also both nice, so every night there is the possibilty of dining in a different one. The menu is a la carte for dinner while they offer buffet lunch (this is a new introduction, so let's hope they get back to a la carte for lunch as well).

We have visited many resorts in the Caribbean, but this is the one we really adore to return to.

Hospitality abounds at Pineapple Beach! Visited: December 2003
Posted by phil312
We just returned from our second stay at Pineapple Beach and once again we loved it! I wonder if the previous writer was writing about the right place.

We were pleasantly surprised to find many of the staff remembered us from our visit last year, were never told we had to tip, got excellent service (it's Antigua-you gotta relax and things will get done!), and were never harassed on the beach.

This is not the place for picky people who expect to be waited on hand and foot and expect gourmet food. It is a nice, fun, place with good food, friendly folks, a great beach, and a place to truly relax and enjoy!

They featured a gospel choir for Christmas Eve, and for New Year's Eve they served lobster duck, and champagne. Also, Santa arrived by boat! This is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy life--Antiguan style!

We wondered what happened to hospitality. Visited: October 2003
Posted by rachmuni
My new husband and I stayed at the Grand Pineapple Beach Resort for a total of four hours before we decided that this was not the resort for us.

We had just come from Sandals Royal Caribbean in Montego Bay where hospitality was top notch and everything was all-inclusive...truly all-inclusive. When we arrived at Pineapple Beach, we were informed that we should tip (even though tips were supposed to be included).

We waited over 45 minutes for a porter to take our bags to our room and tipped the guy $5, even though he dropped a bag in the mud. We both work in hospitality and I have to say, there was a lot lacking at this resort.

Their website posted that there were activities and tours that, in fact, did not exist. This upset me mildly. What truly upset me was that we were harassed on the beach by a non-employee, right in front of resort employees and they did nothing about it.

It began as the usual "would you like to rent a jet ski" sale, but after we said "no thanks", it turned into a profanity laden harassment in front of families. We kept saying "no thanks", and "have a nice day", but the gentlemen, if you could call him that, followed us down the beach (on the resort) and shouted obsenities at us. Meanwhile the resort employees patted him on the shoulders not seeming to care how we felt at all. It was at that moment we called our travel agent to request to be moved to Sandals. It was the best decision we ever made.

Pineapple Beach Resort tried to make us sign a form saying it was not their fault we wanted to check out early and even charged us for two nights stay even though we only stayed for less than 24 hours. I refused to sign the form. This was obviously a resort for families and not for honeymooners, but the hospitality and service were totally lacking and I would not recommend this resort to anyone looking for a fun vacation.

There wasn't much to do, so if you're looking to do nothing, get harassed on the beach and feel unwelcomed, this is the resort for you. As for us, we are now Sandals people.

I'd done a lot of research about this property on this web site and chose Pineapple Beach because of this web site, so I hope my review is helpful in other people's decisions.

A beautiful facility with decent rooms and beautiful views. Visited: June 2003

Grand Pineapple was a wonderful holiday for all of us. We traveled with a group of ten, and all of us enjoyed ourselves.

The rooms were okay. We had a beachfront room with a lovely view. It could have been a little fancier, but it was very clean.

The staff was the only thing we could complain about, though not all of them. I must mention Shaka - he was the best. His wonderful smile greeted us and made us feel welcomed. He went out of his way to make our trip great!

Jerome in the dining room was also super! And Novella was very helpful, too. Many of the other staff were not very friendly or takative, bordering on rude. We figured they didn't put a lot of effort into their jobs because they thought they wouldn't get a tip because of the all-inclusive deal.

The food was good, a nice variety for anyone to choose from. The snack bar at lunch was our favorite. A big "must-do" for all visting Antigua was the Wadadli Circumnavagation Cruise. It was the highlight of our trip - gorgeous 66-foot yacht with a super crew! It was rockin'! Shirley Heights was overpriced and overrated.

The gym was a super asset to the property. We all enjoyed the music every morning. Don't expect wild night life here though, the entertainment ended at 10:00 pm and everyone vanished from site, so it was pretty laid back at night. We would return - and probably will soon!

This certainly was an island paradise! Visited: January 2003

This was our first trip to Pineapple, and we'll definitely be back. It was a perfect location for a winter getaway.

The beach was exceptional, with great snorkeling by just walking in. Food was very good, with three restaurants and plenty of menu selections. The grounds were really beautiful and very well maintained. The staff was helpful and pleasant in every respect. The water sports staff was really accommodating and even spent time teaching guests to sail.

Don't miss afternoon ice cream at the snack bar, and barbecue at the Outhouse, where the views were really magnificent!

We stayed in a beachfront room, and were literally three steps from the soft, white sand beach. Antigua was an English speaking country, with gracious and friendly people. The management, including Paul and Myriam, were very helpful. Also, the staff, especially Tracy and Lewis, were great!

The rooms were large, simple and appointed with Caribbean-style furnishings and decor. We can't wait to get back.

It was everything we wanted! Visited: January 2003

Deciding at the last minute that we wanted a vacation, we deliberated quickly and chose the Pineapple Beach. It turned out to be just what we had wanted. There was plenty of everything- sand, sun, drinks, hospitality, and great food.

The beach was wonderful and there was never any problems with getting chairs, towels or being disturbed by beach vendors. Watersports equipment was always available- we went sailing most days.

There were many activities daily that guests could participate in if they chose to, and there was always some form of nightly entertainment. If you wanted to leave the resort, the friendly and helpful Novella would arrange whatever you wanted. We did go on several island excursions, but could have been just as happy never leaving this wonderful spot.

Although it was a quiet resort, we had the perfect vacation here and can't wait to return.

The Occidental Grand was heaven on earth. Visited: December 2002

This was our second visit to this beautiful property in Antigua. We stayed in one of the lovely waterfront rooms. It was definitely worth the money for the breathtaking views of the ocean.

The beach was a long white stretch of fine sand, the water was crystal blue, and swimming was very safe (for little children as well). The resort was very clean with beautifully maintained gardens.

Also, the staff was absolutely fantastic. They all greeted us so warmly and always had a smile. Jackie, Vera, Novella, Emily, Kevin and Goldine were absolutely super in doing their jobs. During our stay, our little daughter had a little accident and they were all really caring, helpful and genuine. Unfortunately we couldn't exactly say the same of the management...but never mind!

The food was excellent in all restaurants, especially at The Topaz. The new Italian restaurant was very nice for a change. And considering we were in the Caribbean and not in Italy, it was very good (a real Italian can tell you that!). The Pineapple Grill was open twice a week and served Caribbean food, especially Mexican. It was quite nice, but always a bit chilly because of the air conditioning.

There were daily activities, like aerobics in the pool, football matches, free introductory lessons of scuba diving and fishing trips.
We can't wait to go back again...actually we're already planning our next visit!

A fun resort with a beautiful view. Visited: December 2002
Posted by linzayas
My husband and I stayed at Pineapple Resort for 3 nights during our honeymoon. The beach was the best thing about the resort, it was so clean and the water was crystal clear blue. We had a room on a hill overlooking the ocean. The resort offered many activities for their guests. They had games each day for guests to participate in and nightly entertainment. They also played music all day long by the pool. They even had board games to play.

The food was okay. We were able to dine at both Topaz and Chef Pietro's restaurants, their other restaurant-Pineapple Grill was closed.

Dinner at the Topaz was okay, but my husband's food was served warm, not hot. Dinner at Chef Pietto's was better but that restaurant was not open for dinner everyday. The best food was served at the snack bar which was open for lunch and late night snacks (11:30pm-1:30am). Tracey, who served us lunch everyday, always did so with a warm welcome and smile. She was so inviting and friendly.

We also had lunch at Mary's Outhouse, which served great barbecue chicken and ribs with a spectacular view of the ocean. They even let guests write their names on pieces of wood and hang them up around the outhouse.

They also had a disco at the Pineapple Grill. Although it was quite empty, the bartender never let your glass get empty.

After staying at the St. James Hotel for a week (it was more secluded and quiet), this was a nice treat. I would definitely recommend this resort for a relaxing and fun stay.

It was all I hoped it would be and more. For a relaxing, low-key weekend after our honeymoon, this was exactly the right place.

The staff, food, management and room were all wonderful, but the crowning glory of this resort was the beach! It was clean, uncrowded and easily accessible. A reef about 100 yards out was a treat once the water cleared up. By that, I mean from beautiful blue to transparent!

If relaxation in Antigua is what you want, this place is a must!

Nice, but disappointing after reading the great reviews. Visited: October 2002
Posted by adams_kathleen
My fiance and I just returned from a 7-day stay at Allegro Pineapple Beach. For the record: I am a food service director and my fiance has been in hospitality services management for years. We've also travelled the islands extensively and know, "Island Time."

The resort is quite pretty and well-kept. The grounds are clean, and we felt safe and free to wander without harrassment. The beach is pretty, clean and secluded. The hotel is a long way from anywhere, so plan to rent a vehicle or pay a whopping amount for un-air conditioned taxis.

Our room was not what we'd booked. There was a long process at check in, which was longer than necessary. We ended up with a view of the gazebo, better than the first room, but still not what we'd requested. Air conditioning, TV and the accomodations were fine. Problem: all four light bulbs in the entire room were 40 watt. It felt dark and dingy and was impossible for shaving and makeup. There was also no clock or radio in the room. Odd. There was a coffee maker, but creamer and sugar were rock hard and stale.

The food left a lot to be desired. Food rarely matched menu description. Neither of us have ever done the all-inclusive, so we have no basis for comparison. But we felt that the breakfast buffet, while big, could have used some variety. We had the same potatoes, pancakes, french toast, fruit, bakery every day. Fruit was unripe melon and pineapple from the US. (I know the purveyor they use.) One day with papaya and that was it. Coffee was awful - some freeze-dried concentrate. Dinner at Pineapple Grill was awful. Same menu both nights it was open. I didn't go to the Caribbean for bad fajitas and stale nachos with warm Old El Paso. I was hoping for West Indian cuisine. Poor service, badly timed, no check-backs. (Things we, in the industry, look for!) Night service in the Topaz was terrible. (Was better the night the manager and his family were dining..hmm.) It was hard to get water refills and both blenders were broken entire week we were there. The bar featured "Ting" and "Red Stipe", of which they were out of. Lots of slips and misses this foodie caught.

We wanted to replace our beach towels and the worker was on break, twice we were told they were "out" of towels. Novella, Miss Mary and Savage were great. We enjoyed the Outhouse twice, but the food was mediocre.

Take the Estate Safari, Bird Island tour and go to the Commisary for lunch in St. John's. (FRESH Red Snapper and Curried Goat Stew-YUM!) (We also flew to St. Kitts for the day and had great W.I food!)

It was a fun vacation, but be aware of the downfalls of this resort. A lot of other guests we met were grumbling of the same things. I would not go back to an Allegro resort. (Nor do the all-inclusive again.)

We went on our honeymoon in October. The staff couldn't have been friendlier, and they couldn't have done anymore for us.

The food was good - even for me (a vegetarian!) We enjoyed it so much, we're coming back next year! People who have never been, should stay here. You'll never find anywhere nearer paradise than this.

The most beautiful resort in Antiqua! Visited: October 2002
Posted by emullay
This was our fourth visit to Pineapple. We went here for our honeymoon in 1992, returned for our 1st, 5th, and 10th anniversaries.

This visit was the first visit since the hotel was acquired by Allegro. Naturally, changes were observed due to the difference of being privately owned by Mr. Barrett, but we felt that the Allegro management has done a good job in maintaining the beauty of the resort.

Pineapple has the best beach in Antigua. Its beauty and peacefulness, as well as the Antiguan hospitality, is the reason we continue to return to Pineapple.

From morning to evening, the staff is always aiming to meet your every need. Emily is an absolute doll...singing and smiling for breakfast and lunch! Kyla's sweet smile at the bar during the day always makes you feel good! Kevin checks in with you daily to make sure "you're doing OK". And making the visit to Miss Mary at the Outhouse is sure to make anyone's day...she has the best beans and chicken and the coldest Wadadli beer!!

The most pleasant bar staff during the evenings were Ken, Franklyn and James. They were genuinely nice and eager to please!

There were some complaints of the female bar staff during our vist, although we felt the female bar staff wasn't as energetic or as amiable as the male staff, we personally had no problems.

The food was excellent! it was five-star quality each and every day! Peter did an excellent job. The selections were superb and he mdke a point of greeting and speaking with the guests...he's very humble and very sweet! The food was the best during this visit than the three previous visits!

There were less than 100 guests during our stay since this was the "slow time", but we found this to be an asset. We always meet a lot of nice couples from all over the world and enjoy the opportunities to share dinner and after-dinner drinks with other guests.

Hats off to Roger for trying to get the guests involved in the nightly entertainment activities...he's a young guy with a lot of talent!

We've always recommended Pineapple to others, but this time we brought home several brochures so that we can definitely share the secret that we have found in Pineapple...this vacation resort is truly heaven!

It was just what we needed! Visited: September 2002

My husband and I just returned from our honeymoon one week ago, and we are ready to go back. The resort was great. It was relaxing and quiet. It was not a high rise hotel filled with people and commotion.

Our room was a garden view, but we could still see the ocean. Our room was a bit small, but cozy. The beach- amazing.
The clarity and blueness of the ocean kept us on the beach instead of at the pool. The beach was clean, and there was no one walking around bothering us to buy things. Except for Jacko, who's rhymes kept us entertained and laughing.

The food was wonderful - the best I've had in the Caribbean. We were always trying new things, and it kept getting better. Breakfast was always a buffet. Junior made great omeletes and also was a great volleyball player. Dinner at the Pineapple Grill was very fun. Its live music was great. Ask them to sing the "Big Bamboo" song! The fajitas there were also great!! We also drank the water, and we were fine. Neither of us got sick!

There was a lot to do besides the ocean. Our half day trip to St. John's was fun. Eat at the Big Bannana restaurant - they had great pizza. The Bird Island trip booked through the hotel was great. Captain Savage was enough reason to go. Snorkeling and Kayaking were fun things to do along the resort area, but snorkel at Bird Island, too.

It was a great time, and we would recommend it to anyone looking to escape. The staff was friendly and would do anything for you. Novella was wonderful and helpful. We met some great people, too, (hi Tracy and Rob). That made our stay even better.

We had an amazing anniversary vacation. Visited: September 2002
Posted by robtracy
My husband and I just returned from our 10-year anniversary vacation. I had read the previous reviews and did a lot of research on the hotels in Antigua, and we were not disappointed with the choice we made.

This resort was amazing! We stayed in a beachfront room, and the view was breathtaking. Also, the room was lovely and it was cleaned daily. The beach was cleaned every morning and the water was like a bath. We did not spend much time in the pools because of the crystal clear ocean water.

The food was excellent, I tried a lot of the seafood and I was always impressed. I can't say enough about the staff, they made us feel so at home and relaxed. In the mornings, Jackie made our day with her smile! Junior made some amazing omeletes.

We took a 1/2 day trip to St. John's. Book it through the hotel, because the fair was only $10/person return. The Bird Island Picnic and snorkeling was a great trip, and Captain Savage made sure we had a great time. Also, the BBQ was delicious!

The resort was very quiet, which was just fine. There were always lots of beach chairs and we did not have to make any reservations for dinners. We met some great people who made our vacation even more enjoyable! (Hi Jen and Mike).

Thanks to all the staff at Pineapple Beach, we hope to visit again!
