I went to Sandals Antigua last week of March/first st week of April 2004. After reading all the reviews on the web that I could find, I was really quite concerned about what it would be like.
What a wonderful surprise I had. It was absolutely wonderful from the moment we arrived and were greeted with a glass of champagne to the moment we left.
The staff and locals were the friendliest people I have ever met on my travels. The food in all the restaurants was lovely. I especially enjoyed the a la carte in the Bayside and the Italian. We had great fun in Kimonos with DR Love, and the OK corral was also nice.
There was entertainment every night. The beach party on Monday was great.
You could join in activities to collect points for which you would be presented with prizes on your last night - Sandals necklaces, rum, etc.
We tended to stay around our local pool where we made friends with the other guests.
The drinks in Sandals were as it read in the brochure, "branded and non branded". If I asked for a vodka and coke, I was given non branded vodka, if I asked for Smirnoff and coke, I was given Smirnoff. The first week I lived on Champagne! You must try Sip Sops, they really cool you down.
Our room was upgraded, I assume when they have filled all the basic rooms they give people higher graded rooms. We were in the Flamboyant block. The room was very nice, we loved the bed! It was air conditioned with a balcony overlooking the pool.
We could hear the evening entertainment, however the latest it went on was 11 or 12 pm, so it wasn't too bad. A fridge would have been nice.
The only criticism I could find was with the Airport. It really wasn't big enough to cope, and we took an hour to get through arrivals. Departure wasn't so bad with the Virgin Atlantic express check out, but the departure lounge was hot and there weren't enough seats. The cost of food and drinks was outrageous there.
We went into St. Johns a few times and found a nice bar which charged $1.50 for Wadadli, the local lager, but we didn't eat out.
The whole atmosphere in Sandals was lovely, it was very romantic. The weddings looked lovely, too.
The beach was gorgeous, and the vendors were no problem at all. There were only a few, and when we said "no thanks", they would ask if we were having a nice day!
There was the usual towel thing going on which sadly, we were forced to join or be left without a sun bed for the day. I did move a few towels that had been left on the hammocks, I felt that was ridiculous - reserving a hammock!
If you have booked to go, you will have a wonderful holiday, enjoy! |

We went 2/27/04-3/5/04 and had a wonderful time. The grounds of this resort were lush and beautiful. The beach was awesome. We had a few days that were rather windy, so we couldn't do water sports a few of the days. I don't think it was ever below 82 degrees while we were here.
Nights were breezy. If you like it absolutely quiet at night, it won't happen. They did have very loud "peepers" (little frogs that "sang" most of the night), only to be followed by the birds early in the morning.
We stayed in one of the Roundovals, a small round hut all to ourselves. I loved it. There were a few rows of them on the resort. I would have been disappointed with the ones directly on the beach. You literally walk out of your door and 10 feet away would be a lounge chair that was occupied all day.
There was definitely a variety in styles and locations of rooms. If you know of someone who has been there before, it would be a good idea to get their opinion of your room location. There would be a few places on the resort I would not want to stay in.
The restaurants were very good. One was a buffet style, which had anything you could want. My favorite was Kimonos. The food was fabulous. I wasn't thrilled with the Italian restaurant, but only because I like more pasta style dishes which they really didn't have many of.
The steakhouse was good. You do need a reservation every night except for the buffet restaurant - and you can't make them more than a day in advance. They had three seatings and the middle one filled up fast, so call early in the day to get your seating.
The bar service could be slow sometimes, but where are you going? The wine selection was not in my taste, but I did find out after five days, there was a wine list that you could get at dinner if you wanted to purchase another variety. I wish I had been told about that option earlier in the week.
They did theme nights every night, so if you want to get into it, find out in advance what they might be doing. (example: Antigua night you needed clothing of Antigua flag colors) They awarded guests "points" every time they did a game or activity and at the end of your stay, you get prizes if you have enough points (little leather sandals necklace, rum).
The Spa got a "ten" from me. (It was not included in our price). We had a couples massage, then I went back and got a second one later in the week. Olivia (the masseuse I had) was great! The steam room and other facilities there were very nice and had a relaxing atmosphere. It was definitely worth the money.
All in all, I would go back today if I could. |

My husband and I came here in June of 2003 and could not get over how wonderful Sandals and Antigua were. So, we decided to treat our adult children (26-year-old twin boys) and their girlfriends and go for another trip.
We arrived the evening of Jan. 2 and were picked up by the taxi with two other couples. Upon arrival we were treated to the customary cold towels and glasses of champagne. They did ask for a credit card to be on file in case we booked any excursions that were not included.
We took lots of pictures, since we wanted never to forget this trip. The kids had beachfront rooms and they loved them. We wanted our old room back and got it! It was on the second floor near the lobby facing the ocean (with a very private balcony).
We knew the ropes this time and brought small denominations of bills, they never had change, so we just planned ahead. We did not miss Shirley Heights on Sunday evening, we snorkeled, swam in the ocean, drank at the pool bar, made lots of friends, (with the staff as well as guests), rode horses on the beach, and shopped from the beach vendors (it was way cheaper than anyplace else).
All in all, we had a vacation to remember for a lifetime. We did not need to use the a/c in our room on either trip, we just opened the windows and relaxed! The "peepers" at night were like music. Antigua was a paradise I am glad we discovered it.
I would not go to another resort, we loved the all-inclusive. Sailing, ocean bikes, it was all amazing. There may have been little problems, but nothing that would keep me from coming back again! |

This was our best decision! Visited: November 2003 |

My new husband and I began our honeymoon at Sandals Royal Caribbean in Montego Bay, Jamaica and had a fabulous time.
We island hopped to Antigua for the bulk of our honeymoon, and were originally booked at the Pineapple Beach Resort. Needless to say, after only a couple of hours there, we knew it was not the place for us.
First thing the next morning, we phoned our travel agent and begged to be moved to Sandals based upon our great experience with them in Jamaica. It was the best decision we ever made.
Sandals Antigua was beautiful, the staff and other guests were so nice and warm from the minute we got there, and we could not have had a better time on honeymoon. It was the complete opposite of Pineapple Beach Resort.
We even got stuck here for two extra days because the Antiguan Airport workers went on strike, and the management at Sandals accommodated us at 1/4 the normal daily price so we could have a place to stay. They also checked up on us truly demonstrating that a little hospitality goes a long way.
The resort was like summer camp for adults, and when they say all-inclusive, they mean it. It was not like at the other resort where tips are expected even though they're included already. Even the jaunts can be charged to your room - unlike the other resorts.
Sandals truly takes care of their guests like family and we will never go anywhere else. They live up to every bit of advertising and although I do not work for them in marketing and promotions, I wish I did. I cannot say enough good things about this place, so you're just going to have to visit Sandals Antigua and find out for yourself. |

We actually stayed in 1998 for our honeymoon. We had a lot of fun. The food was average but the staff was very nice. I am hard to please and I was happy with everything. The room was small but so what! We were not in our room all day long. The beach was nice but we spent most of the time at the resort. The pools were big and clean. They had a nice spa, hot tub, cold tub, massuesse (sp?) we met some nice couples from England. They do take your credit card at the beginning but it takes the pressure off of spending. We were very relaxed at the end of the stay. Drinks were plentiful but they did run out occasionally. 5 restaraunts with good food at some average at others. It was worth it and we would go back again. Its not the Four Seasons but it is a great carribean stay. |

We stayed at this resort one year ago today. I don't know what took me so long to write up my report until now, but it could be because I'm planning our next vacation. It will not be at Sandals! The beach is always full of vendors that do not leave you alone. The food was okay, but we've had better. The resort needs some repair and the service was just okay.
We had a good time because I don't let anything ruin my vacation, but overall I will pick another place to stay. And it won't be Antigua or Sandals again. |

We arrived on our 29th anniversary, and Sandals knew how to set the tone for a wonderful week. The staff went out of their way to make us feel comfortable as they greeted us with champagne in the lobby upon our arrival.
The grounds were absolutely gorgeous; the groundskeepers did a superb job maintaining all the flowers and beautiful walkways throughout the property.
The food was abundant and delicious, and the junior honeymoon suite was large and very accommodating. The staff constantly filled our refrigerator with our favorite drinks and made sure we had everything we needed.
Sandals Antigua had an awesome swim-up bar at the largest pool, where we spent much of our time. The pools were well maintained and sparkling clean. We attended a beach party, went on a catamaran cruise which provided snorkeling at Cade's Reef, visited two casinos, went to Shirley Heights lookout at sunset, and shopping, etc.
They provided a tour desk in their lobby which opened daily and would book the value of the tour directly to the room, so guests did not have to carry money around the resort at all.
Sandals knows how to create an atmosphere of love. It is no wonder it is rated the most romantic resort of all- we lived it for seven days. |

We just returned from a week in paradise! My husband and I have traveled extensively. This was our first trip to AI, but it certainly won't be our last.
The hotel was just beautiful, our room was lovely, the service was excellent. The beach was wonderful, and I have to agree with others that the beach vendors were friendly, and a simple "no thanks" sent them away. Of course, you might also want to spend a moment or two talking to them as a way to get a feel for the real Antigua. They were just nice people trying to make a living.
We did two snorkeling trips through the hotel, and each trip was to a different reef, which really made it fun. There was never a problem finding a beach chair, although I will agree that when the cruise people came in, it could get rather crowded. So, we just went to the pool for awhile!
The spa was amazing - truly worth a few extra dollars to spend some time there. We did the romantic escapade - what a great way to start a vacation. We did take the trip to Monserrat, which was interesting, but made for a very long day. The sheet said 8:00 am -4:30 pm, but the ferry ran on its own schedule, and we did not get back until after 8:00 pm. The trip back was pretty rough, too, if you are prone to seasickness. Shirley Heights on Sunday night was fun, also.
We have already started thinking about our next trip to Sandals and did some web surfing to St. Lucia, but honestly, Antigua looks like the best place in the world and as of now, we are planning a return trip next year. |

For those that are considering a trip to this Sandals ..beware..the food is way below par, the restaurants seem to have thier own rules that are not guest friendly, if you book the "oceanview concierge suite" be careful, they have 12 rooms in this category but in fact only four of the twelve are on the ocean the others face a garden, we finally got moved after complaining. There are better places for the money... |

It was about a year ago now..we had booked the 'Oceanfront Concierge Suite" and found out the room assigned was overlooking a garden well back fom the ocean.Once we complained they did put us in one of the only 4 rooms that are actually oceanfront even though they sell 12 suites in this category. Its too bad that they made us go through this as we had specifically requested Ocean front from the beginning.Secondly, we found that the food was second class at best and the restaurants seemed to have thier own ideas about how and when to serve it that had no interest in the guest at all.I did manage to contact them upon returning home to voice my dissatisfaction concerning the food and got a nice letter from the General Manager, telling me I must be wrong, and bragging about all the awards he has won. What a laugh...be careful..my wife and I agree you can do way better than Sandals Antigua for the money... |

My husband and I recently returned from our New Year's vacation at Sandals, Antigua. I must say that we were extremely disappointed in many ways.
It started from our pick-up at the airport. Upon retrieving our luggage we were hurried into a van with 2 other couples and sped off. No chance to breathe. Upon our arrival we were asked for a credit card to keep on file.
The resort upgraded us to an oceanfront room. All I can say is that I hate to see the room we were supposed to be in. The room was immaculately clean, but very, very small, poorly lit, and a bit outdated. We had to wait two days to get a lock for our room safe. On the 4th day of our 7-day stay, our air conditioner, which is controlled by a remote, would not shut off. All that was needed was new batteries for the remote. We reported this to the front desk and were told it would be taken care of right away. Two days later my husband asked if he could just have the batteries so we could shut off our air. Again we were told someone would come to our room to do it. Never happened.
The food was not that great. The breakfast was always cold and you were never greeted with a smile in any of the restaurants, except the Japanese restaurant. The food was great there and we were greeted and treated like royalty.
The worse thing about this place was the beach. You are constantly harassed by peddlers. It was quite annoying. Plus it is a public beach and right next to the resort is an area that rents beach chairs and umbrellas for the day. They would set up these chairs all along the front of the resorts beach area, leaving no room for the hotels quests. One day it was so crowded because of a cruise ship that was in that people were just taking the lounge chairs that belonged to Sandals. There were none for the quests. Two hotel security guards watched this all day and did nothing.
The pools are small and not very clean. And there were not enough lounge chairs at any of the pools or the beach. Do not bother taking the boat trip to Bird Island for snorkeling. I thought that it was a total rip-off. On two occasions they had run out of beach towels. And the hotel's gift shop, which was rarely open, was shamefully overpriced. I will say this for the hotel. The house keeping was great. The rooms were always well kept and clean and the refrigerator was always well stocked. But for the money you pay here, that’s not enough! The island of Antigua is beautiful, but not this resort.

What a great place to have a wonderful time! Visited: December 2002 |

I just came back from my honeymoon at Sandals Antigua yesterday and I have to admit I had a wonderful week.
To start off, I actually read every testimonial before booking my trip and was a little hesitant to go because of some of the reviews. I'm glad I went ahead.
Sandals Antigua was a very well maintained resort. The gardens were absolutely gorgeous and the beach was fabulous. Antigua has the best beaches in the Caribbean.
The property itself was not 5 star. The furniture was okay, the rooms were decent (stayed in one of the concierge rooms) and the service was friendly - but not amazing. What I enjoyed the most was the beach and the activities.
There were entertainment and sports activities daily. You will not get bored. The restaurants were by no means upscale or high quality food. The service was a little rushed. Staff was pretty friendly. Several staff members didn't feel like doing their job, but overall they were really nice.
I would recommend this resort to anyone if they enjoy the beach and sports activities. I plan to go to Sandals St. Lucia (which I heard is even better) sometime in the near future. If you do go to Sandals Antigua, make sure you take a day trip in a catamaran to Barbuda. It was breathtaking.

Incredibly disappointed. Visited: November 2002 |
| Posted by Heidi_Anderson |
 |
As a frequent traveler, I have always longed to go to a Sandals resort. My fiancé and I had enormous expectations. We were incredibly disappointed. I would like to share some of our disappointments below:
People go to the Caribbean to sit by the ocean. You can't do this at Sandals Antigua because solicitors pedaling everything imaginable continually bombard the guests. I also understand that all beaches in Antigua are private. However, we spent a few of our days at other resort beaches and they had policemen strolling their beaches that would enforce the privacy of the hotel guests and would not let the vendors approach their guests. We felt imprisoned to stay behind the property fence and lie by the pool instead of the ocean.
The food was horrible. Most mornings for breakfast all of the food dishes were empty. This was early on in the day. Big metal trays labeled “pancakes” or “french toast” that were completely empty. On two occasions the resort ran out of beer. Certainly, not what one would expect from a place that has apparently been awarded the #1 honeymoon spot several years in a row.
The service was completely lackluster. Nobody greets you with a smile and they act as if it is painful for them to have to seat you at a table. On the day of my arrival I went to get a drink. The bartender asked what I wanted. “I replied, something refreshing, what do you recommend?” He said. “I don’t know, I’m not drinking it." When you figure it out let me know and I will make it…” I thought this response was quite disturbing.
I understand that bugs can never be totally avoided in the Caribbean but the bugs here seemed out of control. Not quite what one would expect from a top resort.
People spend a great deal of money at this all-inclusive resort. I felt that these problems were completely unacceptable. I expressed these grievances to
Sandals in a letter. These grievances were completely dismissed and
left uncompensated.

Sandals Antigua is perfect for a wedding or honeymoon. Visited: October 2002 |
| Posted by tacuff |

I had my "weddingmoon" at Sandals Antigua and we really enjoyed the resort.
The landscaping was well kept and very lush and tropical. The beach was gorgeous with incredible sand, water and sunsets. The only downside of the beach was that it was public, and the vendors can be a hassle. But a "no thank you" will do, and they will learn to let you be. There were 5 pools/whirlpools and plenty of land/watersports for when you're looking for some action.
We stayed in the grand lux beachfront concierge level and after being at the resort for a few days, we felt this was the best location for guests looking for an ocean/beach view. The view was great and it was only 10 steps from the beach. It made it easy when you needed to run to the room while vegging on the beach. The room was not large, but comfortable, along with the bathroom.
The staff was friendly, although not overly friendly. We are not real picky travelers, so this didn't bother us too much. As long as we got what we needed, when we needed it...we didn't have to have a smile and an enthusiastic attitude all the time! The staff was not rude, just not overly friendly.
This was a great way to get married. They took care of everything and I couldn't have asked for better on my wedding day.
The food was decent, although nothing spectacular. There were a few dinners that stood out more than others. Breakfast and lunch were buffet style, and there were lots of selections. Our favorite restaraunts were Kimonos (Japanese) and the OK Corral (Southwestern).
We really enjoyed this resort and would recommend it. It had a great laid back and romantic charm to it. We plan on returning this year and I can't wait! |

Okay, I understand by reading some of the reviews posted that not everyone has a good time on their vacations. But, fortunately, I am not one of them. My wife and I spent the week after our wedding at Sandals Antigua and we had the time of our lives.
We were booked into the Deluxe Rondoval Suites (with Concierge Service). Our "hut" overlooked the beach - so we woke up every day looking at the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean. On our second day here, we were sitting at a swim-up pool bar discussing when we thought that we could afford to make a return trip.
I do sympathize with those who had bad experiences, and some of the things they described are true. But they were small enough to overlook for me and my wife. We focused on the good times we had.
Sandals Antigua was a great vacation resort, especially for those looking for romance. Sure, the beach "peddlers" could be annoying, but you just tune them out... or start making out with your significant other. :) |

It was pure Heaven. Visited: May 2002 |

Sandals Antigua was heaven on earth! We just returned from one week here - and loved every moment.
The beach was incredible! Although it was a public beach, the locals were polite and although they tried to sell you souvenirs, they quickly left you alone when they were asked (no harrassing - not like some other islands).
The grounds were amazing! They were always clean, and beautifully kept.
We found the staff more than friendly and efficient. In fact, I would say the service was better than any other resort we had been too (including other Sandals resorts).
What we liked most, was the quaint atmosphere about Sandals Antigua. The beach was never overcrowded. The pools, while small, were quiet. And best of all, a lounge chair was always available at any time of day (we were at the Royal Bahamian Sandals where there were simply never enough lounge chairs on either the beach or around the pools).
Also, the low rise buildings and winding paths gave a real "village feeling" to the place, and offered a great deal of privacy. Despite the quiet, quaint atmosphere though - there were still plenty of activities, day and night, in which to participate (if you wished). We were quite impressed with the social activities and the evening entertainment.
The only critism we had was that the rooms were getting a bit run-down looking, though they were kept extremely clean (house keeping was excellent). If going to this resort, you need to spend a bit more money to get a more upgraded room.
We would go back though, and are still thrilled with Sandals. We can hardly wait for our next trip! |

We had a great time in Sandals Antigua. What a nice place. We did the couples massage which was amazing. We made friends with everyone, including the beach vendors who could be annoying, but they were cool. The activities crew was a lot of fun, too. We mostly hung out at the pool with the swim-up bar and drank our little hearts out.
The best part of the trip was a tour called "Shirley Height's". Wow! We drove up this huge mountain/cliff. On top of the mountain, it overlooked the English Harbor. A huge orchestrated steel drum played while rum punch was flowing and there was also a barbecue
.
We were upgraded, but the room was not that great. Hopefully, during our next trip, they'll hook us up. |

An overbooked, mediocre resort Visited: April 2002 |
| Posted by heather_macgregor |
 |
The resort was “overbooked” and our room was not available, but they "would try to move us" asap. We were put in a room that was supposedly an upgrade, located in the midst of the jungle. We had to duck under overgrown vegetation to access the corridor behind the building. It looked like a cheap motel with the air-conditioners sagging next to the doors, was poorly lit and although clean, the water stank so bad in the morning that we would not brush our teeth or shower with it.
The in-room “bar” consisted of a crate, a tray, and a couple bottles of liquor shoved into a corner. The iron leaked rusty water and the ironing board had a large hole burned into it. I understand that accidents in booking may happen, but this room was clearly sub-standard.
We received a call at 8:30am the following morning telling us to have our bags ready, as they would be moving us to our new room in an hour or two. Two other couples at orientation were in the same situation as us – their rooms were also not available due to overbooking and they had also been relocated to “upgraded rooms” of the same class as ours. How does a resort that is running at 100% have the space to upgrade 3 separate couples on the same day to “better” rooms???
Our new room had no pillowcases (we were told that they would be brought soon, which turned out to be after 6pm). Our luggage arrived over 4 hours after the morning call.
After 5 requests, we got beach towels at 11pm on Friday (our second day there) from the manager on duty, who personally delivered them to assure that it had been done.
The water in the new room was better, but still had a bad taste and semi-foul odor making it essentially undrinkable. Some days were worse than others.
Lastly, although the “common” buildings were very nice and well-appointed, the guest rooms/buildings were very obviously old. For example: Rust patches showing through on exterior walls, chipped tiles in the bathroom, a “full-bath” that I would never think of sitting in, blinds on the windows that didn’t close fully. I would have expected things to be a little more posh and nice at a resort of this price-range and reputation. We spent half as much to go to an all-inclusive resort last year in the Caribbean of the same rating, which turned out to be far nicer (and this was before the travel industry was hurting for business).
Overall, I am very disappointed in the fact that Sandals Antigua is touted as a five-star, award-winning resort. Based on my experience, I will not choose Sandals again as a vacation destination nor will I recommend it to anyone else who is looking for a high-quality resort.

Perhaps a Caribbean Cruise Next Time... Visited: April 2002 |

We honeymooned at Sandals Halcyon St. Lucia and had a magnificent time. While we were there, another couple told us that they honeymooned at Sandals Antigua, and highly recommmended it to us. However, they made their trip in 1997, and perhaps some things about the property have changed since...
All service at the resort, with few exceptions, was incredibly slow, and generally half-hearted. Understand that you're on "island time" once you arrive, but the service we got brought a whole new meaning to "island time." From our experience at Sandals Halcyon, the service was relaxed at times, but certainly never surly.
The problems started at the airport, when the resort's greeter ignored us, even after we had given her our name, and she had confirmed our reservation with her list. The people going to the Jolly Harbour Hotel (which is not an expensive all-inclusive resort) got a better welcome than we did!
The check-in staff was inattentive. Sandals "Signature" members shouldn't expect to get the "VIP check-in/out" that is promised, while staying here. It doesn't exist.
On a snorkeling trip, the boat ran out of gas, and the two resort watersports employees on the trip DIDN'T BRING A RADIO!!! (Did I mention that hubby is in the US Coast Guard?) We were stuck in the midday sun for over an hour until assistance arrived.
We wrote a 4 page letter to Sandals detailing our problems. The response from the company has been lousy. We're disappointed that for the price of this vacation, Sandals is willing to do so little to encourage us to come back.
We'll take our vacation $$ elsewhere next time. |

We spent a week at Sandals in Antigua. It was more than what we expected. Yes it's expensive, but it's worth every penny.
The rooms were more than beautiful, the food was amazing and the staff was excellent. When we arrived we got a wonderful welcome from Atiba; he made sure that we would have a great time while staying at Sandals.
My husband did not want to go at first because he thought it was too expensive but finally we went and now he's already planning our next vacation at a Sandals Resort (maybe in Jamaica or back to Antigua).
Overall, everything was fantastic—the food, the drinks, the resort, the staff and even local people were extremely nice to us.
We tried all of the restaurants except for the Italian one; we never had a chance to go, but every restaurant we tried was great. (If you go to Kimono's request to have Angelo as a chef; he's a lot of fun!) We will definitely go back!
