We arrived at the front desk, were greeted with a rum punch, and were shuttled to our room by golf cart, over the lagoon and via winding pathways. We stayed in a suite. Our bathroom was huge with twin sinks, a huge bath and a walk-in 'his and hers' shower.
The bedroom area was basic but nice, with a step down into the sitting area. The best was to come, though. There were glass sliding doors onto a terrace with two sunloungers, followed by a gorgeous view of the beach.
We had requested a first floor room, but got a ground floor. For anyone deciding which to go for - it's a tough choice. The ground floor had the huge advantage of being directly on the beach. But the sound insulation was very bad, we thought we had people training for a marathon above us it was that loud (to the point where it woke us in the morning - and we aren't light sleepers!).
The beach was great, the sand was a light gold color and the water a greeny blue. There were lots of rocks in this part of the beach. We'd walk to the superior rooms area where there were no rocks and it was easier to get into the water. The water varied from very calm to fairly rough. (The first five or six days were calmish, and the last five days it was fairly rough with breaking waves.)
Our weather was okay. Out of ten days, six were mostly sunny, three were cloudy most of the day and we had one day of rain.
The pool area was nice, with a waterfall. A little annoyance though (this may be us Brits' fault!?, was that after breakfast, we'd go to get our towels and things and get to the pool about 10:15 am. There were about 15 rondavels around the pool with a couple of sun loungers round each one. There would only be about three with people around them, the rest had been 'reserved' with towels, and the people didn't turn up for a few hours sometimes. It was not Galley Bay's fault, but a bit frustrating.
In general, Galley Bay had a rustic quality. Don't expect plush, marble lobby and rooms, it was more of a 'natural surroundings' resort. One thing we loved about it was the atmosphere - so relaxed and absolutely classless (as in no one was better than anyone else).
There were two bars - the bar next to the Sea Grape restaurant and the TeePee. There was also a small bar at the Gauguin restaurant, but this was more likely to be used if you were dining at the Gauguin.
The food was always good, and at times excellent. The breakfast and lunch menu didn't change, but there was always three or four special dishes at the Sea Grape for lunch. The dinner menu was different every night at Sea Grape, but stayed the same at the Gauguin.
All the staff was good. We had a lovely to chat with Stafford in the Gauguin restaurant, and Kerri-Ann was lovely too. Mike, the maitre d' was very friendly, yet very professional. |

Galley Bay provided a delightful honeymoon! Visited: June 2003 |

We were extremely impressed with our first trip to Antigua and Galley Bay. We have traveled fairly extensively in the Caribbean, and Antigua is now our front-runner in terms of friendliness and service.
Although there were several honeymooners here, we never felt as though we were ordinary - the staff always spoke and greeted us by name with a smile. Galley Bay was wonderful, and we would give it 4.5 stars out of 5.
We stayed in a Gauguin cottage and found the "hobbit house" description to be accurate. The room was comfortable but not luxurious. Positives were the great air conditioning; well and frequently-stocked mini-bar; bathrobes (handy for running across the breezeway); and numerous tv and movie channels (my new husband is a junkie).
Negatives were the lack of a/c in the bathroom; lack of fitted sheet on the bed; and lack of music in the room (a cd player would have been a nice touch).
Food and drinks were very good, with a wide variety, plentiful seafood, and excellent service for the Caribbean. In our experience, no request was too big or too small. We were a bit disappointed in the beach barbecue, and suggest dining at the Gauguin on that night.
We did appreciate that all courses were available in various sizes, i.e., if you wanted a large appetizer as a meal or a large salad as a meal, Galley Bay would oblige. The local beer, Wadadli, was very good, as was the selection of premium brands at the bars. The local hot sauce, Suzie's, was fantastic and is the new condiment of choice for us!
The beach was wide and gorgeous with few people and enough waves to bodysurf. There were plenty of chairs and tons of space. As honeymooners, we were given a complimentary Wadadli Catamaran cruise. Although the snorkeling at Bird Island was disappointing, this cruise was a lot of fun and we highly recommend it!
We rented a jeep one day and drove along the coast and up Fig Tree Drive to English Harbor. This was a highlight of our trip – tons of secluded, gorgeous beaches at which to stop and take a dip and, compared to other islands on which we have driven, Antigua's roads were very easy to navigate.
Finally, we were most impressed with Sean (beach vendor). When my husband decided to cancel an arranged rental, Sean made a special trip to Galley Bay on his day off to refund our deposit.
We have never returned to the same Caribbean island twice, as there are so many we'd like to visit. However, we definitely plan to return to Antigua and Galley Bay in our future. Thanks again to the staff and management for giving us such wonderful honeymoon memories. |

This was the best resort we have ever been to! Visited: June 2003 |

After researching resorts around the world for our honeymoon, we decided on Galley Bay. We worried a little because we wanted everything to be perfect. But, it certainly was when we arrived.
Galley Bay was perfect in every way. Yes, you could be critical of a few small things, but that is just being petty. The beach, rooms and staff were top notch.
The food was great, with such a variety. We could hardly move when we got home! The free activities helped to keep the weight off, they were all great - tennis, gym and swimming.
We went to several other resorts whilst on holiday. Those who have moaned about Galley Bay, even in a small way, should stay at another resort - none of them compared. Galley Bay was one of the top three resorts in Antigua, without a doubt.
The rooms were great, especially the deluxe and premium suites. Being on the beach was great and made for a special holiday. If you want noise and hustle, don't go to Galley Bay, it is not that type of resort.
We met some nice people and only left the resort on a boat trip. Everything we needed was on site.
Go to Galley Bay, enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, the friendly people and great views. It was fantastic. It may not have been a five-star accommodation, due to no "on-beach bar service" and a few other minor points, but it was a five-star accommodation compared to other resorts.
If we won the lottery this week, we would be back within hours! |

This was probably as good as an all-inclusive can be. Visited: June 2003 |

This place was a delight and only a few service flaws prevented me from giving it a perfect score of five stars. I feel five stars must be reserved for those resorts (like Four Season Nevis) that have excellent service standards by any measure- not just by Caribbean standards.
The food was usually great, sometimes it was average and sometimes it was excellent. It was never poor, as it is easy to find in the islands in my experience. The service was generally friendly, but not always efficient. We were constantly trying in vain to discern who our waitress/waiter was.
Also, don't ask the bread guy for water or the wine server for iced tea. Rest assured that if you do, there is a very good chance you will be made to feel you have grossly violated the chain of command. It got to the point where we were intimidated from ordering iced tea refills because we did not want to put in too much effort.
Other than these types of flaws, and others like having to fight to get all of my laundry back within 48 hours or to get a plunger delivered within a couple of hours, the staff was quite friendly.
The bar was legitimately top shelf, more so than I ever thought I would find in an all-inclusive. The beach was nothing short of world-class and largely empty.
The pool was smaller than it looked in photos and often smelled of the sewer-treated water that I heard was used to water the grounds. But, in my opinion, you would have to be a fool to spend much time at any pool when there was such a beach only yards away.
Our Gauguin hut was charming, but the shower/changing room hut could use some air conditioning, too. Don't be too suprised to see a little lizard in your hut now and again.
I would say that if the price difference between beachfront and Gauguin was steep, stick with the Gauguin. If it is a slight difference, go beachfront. I would not pay more than about a 20% premium over Gauguin to pay for beachfront if we return, which we plan to.
Be prepared to make friends here too, to enhance your stay as we did. The size of the resort was perfect for this purpose and all of the guests were quite friendly .
This place was what I must imagine to be just about as good as an all-inclusive could possibly be. If you like to eat and drink when on vacation, like my wife and I do - this is the only way to go as far as we are concerned. If you are not big drinkers/eaters, this might not be your best value destination. |

We had a fantastic time at Galley Bay, initially choosing it after reading the reviews on this web site.
Being on honeymoon, we were upgraded to a deluxe beachfront room. There was nothing better than being able to step from our patio onto the beach! We also were entitled to a bottle of champagne upon arrival and we received a free catamaran trip.
Since we were on honeymoon, we were planning to just laze around on the beach, but there were so many trips available, that we ended up doing quite a bit!
Do not leave without swimming with the dolphins - Zeus and Hippo were amazing! Feeding the sting rays was a little scary as the water was murky and they were just dark shadows! Also, take a tour of the island by helicopter. It took about half hour and cost around $130.
The catamaran trip on Wadadli cats was excellent. And the snorkeling was great off of Cades Reef and lunch/beers were included.
The highlight of the holiday, though, was definitely chartering a private yacht called 'Jabberwocky'. It worked out pretty expensive for just two people at $600 for the day. But we were lucky enough to make friends with some great couples, so we shared the cost.
We had lunch on board and went snorkeling off of Prickly Pear Island, it was fantastic!
The food was amazing. We had a table for eight of us almost every night and Mike, the maitre'd, was wonderful offering us champagne and cheese after our meal!
We couldn't have wished for a better honeymoon! |

After much research on the internet, we decided to choose Galley Bay for our honeymoon. On arrival, we were immediately ushered to the bar for welcome drinks.
Being honeymooners, we had a free upgrade to a deluxe beachfront room. We were in a ground floor room, which was fantastic - we could just walk straight off the patio and onto the beach. The room also had a walk-in closet and an enormous bathroom. The minifridge (Wadadli beer, Sprite, Coke, water) was restocked daily.
The sea was a little choppy for the first couple of days, but that didn't stop us from going in. There were rocks in places, but it was very easy to pick a route through them. After the first couple of days, the sea calmed down and was like a millpond anyway.
We spent a lot of time snorkeling (there were rocks at both ends of the beach which provided plenty of shelter for the fish). One of the best experiences of the holiday was that during one of the nights, we watched about three or four giant turtles make their way up the beach and lay their eggs right next to us!
The food was excellent. This was our first all-inclusive holiday, and I had some concerns about buffet-style meals. However, at Galley Bay the food was all al a carte, apart from the fantastic barbecue on Thursday nights.
Initially, we found the service at breakfast and at lunch could be a bit patchy. However, we had lunch at another hotel one day, and this made us realize that the service at Galley Bay was fantastic by Caribbean standards!
On the whole, the staff was very friendly and couldn't do enough for us. Mike, the maitre d' at the Seagrape Restaurant, was absolutely wonderful, and we really felt that we were being looked after. Also, watch out for Levique's dancing - it was highly entertaining!
We can recommend the catamaran cruise to Cades Reef on Wadadli Cats. As we were honeymooners, this was free for us, but it would be well worth the $70 per person. The drinks were free, and lunch was also provided.
We also went to Monserrat for a day to see the volcano, took a helicopter tour of Antigua, and chartered a yacht for the day with three other couples who we made friends with.
After months of stressing with wedding preparations, our two weeks at Galley Bay were just what we needed. I don't think that I have ever been so relaxed! |

My husband and I wanted a quiet and relaxing holiday, where we could be pampered. We certainly got it!
The food was excellent, the staff was superb, and we had a beach front room with a wonderful view. We also visited Shirley Heights - what an experience.
The trip on the Wadadli catamaran was one of the highlights of the holiday, along with the swim with the dolphins, and the helicopter ride.
This was our first trip to Antigua, but hopefully will not be our last. |

My husband and I do not like crowded/ large hotels, so this was the ideal resort for us. If you like to be pampered, this is just right for you.
The hut bedroom was a bit small and alarmed me initially, yet when I crossed the breezeway, I discovered an expansive bath/dressing room. The natives welcomed visitors with zeal. The food was superior. I even ordered curried goat one evening, which was not on the menu. It was as tender as could be. |

I didn't give Galley Bay five stars because I don't believe in "perfect"; but I would easily give it four and a half stars, if possible.
I agree with all the positive comments and some of the negative ones.
Although, I am not sure I'd go back, my wife is ready. To me, the beach is too small (we like Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman). Also, the snorkeling is almost non-existent off the beach. The water is rough and it kept us away from the coral reefs for five days.
The menu is somewhat repetitive menu and there are a minimal number of fish dishes, but know that Mike and kitchen would have provided alternatives if requested.
We stayed upstairs beachfront, and the room is only surpassed by one in Princeville ($550/night) Hawaii.
You can walk or bike to hotels on both sides of Galley Bay and the few people we talked to at each wished they had come to Galley Bay.
The bikes they provide are very poorly maintained (rusty, seats could not be raised/lowered), no gears (mine at home only has three gears) and coaster brakes (fun but unreliable and potentially dangerous on the hills).
I think this is a great place, and would return and would easily recommend it.
I'd have to reconsider going the first week of December because that is still the rainy season and water was somewhat rough (which I actually liked except that it limited snorkeling). |

What a wonderful and relaxing place to vacation! Visited: December 2002 |

My husband and I just returned from a 10-day stay at Galley Bay for our honeymoon. We had a wonderful vacation! If you are looking for a clean, well-kept resort with a beautiful beach, great food, and nice staff--then Galley Bay is for you.
We stayed in a cottage that was nice and private. The cottages were not on the beach, but we didn't mind at all. The food was beyond our expectations for an all-inclusive. Every meal was great and the options were plentiful. The weather was also beautiful--with a nice breeze.
There was light entertainment at dinner every night, but if you are looking for big nightlife--then Antigua is not for you. We were looking to relax and enjoy each other--and that was exactly what we did. We actually played dominoes and trivial pursuit (available in the library) in the evenings. It was a great way to spend quality time with a new spouse after the wedding craziness.
We would also recommend renting a jeep for a day to drive around the island. There were no street signs, just landmarks, but we found our way. We had fun and saw the view from Shirley Heights, English Harbor, etc. As we were there for New Year's Eve, we also had fun at the Galley Bay Gala --complete with party hats, a band, dancing, champagne, etc.
The staff went out of their way to make sure our stay was perfect, especially Mike, Sadie, Vanetta, and Stuart. We really had a great time and would recommend to all honeymooners looking to relax!
One helpful hint: pack a change of clothes, bathing suit, sunscreen, etc. in your carry-on---it was very common to not have your luggage on the first day when flying into Antiqua through San Juan. |

We just returned from a six-day stay at Galley Bay. And were my wife and I surprised. We have stayed at many of the Caribbean Islands and always at four or five star resorts. But, the Galley Bay was - by far - one if - not the nicest.
Its size is just right insuring you receive the most personalized service. The food is great with a beverage service that is more than adequate. The rooms are very confortable with the surrounding grounds and landscaping are just breathtaking. We have already started plannning our return visit. |

My husband and I traveled to Galley Bay for a ten-day honeymoon in October. I never imagined a resort could be so wonderful! We felt like we were on a paradise island!
If you want relaxation and are not a big party fan, this is the place for you! Galley Bay is a perfect place for honeymooners, where you can relax and spend quality time with each other! We have many wonderful memories of our time at Galley Bay.
The resort was immaculate. Everything was clean, no matter where we were in the resort. The food was spectacular. We enjoyed the variety of food and options of dining. We could have a late lunch and then a late dinner if we wanted; there was always flexibility.
The staff was fantastic. We especially enjoyed Tamika and Cobis! Everyone here was very accommodating.
We would both highly recommend Galley Bay. The worst thing about the trip was returning home from Paradise. We can't wait to return! |

A honeymooners dream getaway! Visited: September 2002 |

My new wife and I came to Galley Bay for our honeymoon after much, much research on the web. This resort was one of the best rated with fewest complaints, and now we can see why. We were so happy with our choice and think you will be too.
We arrived later in the evening and were amazed with the ocean front room. It was very spacious and breeze-filled with a fridge that was stocked daily with beer and water. Waking up the next morning, we found that we were only 50 yards (if that) from the ocean and the swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing could not have been any better.
The resort supplied pretty much everything we wated to do. They had great food (The Guagan restaraunt is a must for honeymooners, as it is very romantic and great food); bikes for riding around the island if you can bear the steep hills; snorkeling gear and a pretty large library for relaxing on the beach with a book.
The staff was also wonderful and happy to book anything we wanted to do off the resort. My new wife and I really enjoyed the Catamaran Cruises both at sunset and an all day snorkeling trip.
The only reason I did not give them 5 stars (and this is pretty picky) was that, at times, the waitstaff seemed to have chips on their shoulders. I guess everyone has a bad day, but at Galley Bay I can not imagine anyone having a bad day.
We are in our late 20s and were in the mood for relaxing. No screaming kids, no late night drunks, plenty of gourmet food and an all around relaxed environment. Light music was supplied at dinner each night and a steel drum band one night as well. Perfect for a honeymoon and one heck of a romantic time.
Thanks, Galley Bay for a wonderful honeymoon experience and memories to last us a lifetime.

Wow, wow, and wow! Visited: September 2002 |

Galley Bay is going to be something to live up to, and although we are only in our late 20s and have much of the world to see, this is going to be something to beat.
We were here on our honeymoon, and from the first day we arrived (11th September) from a delayed flight from Gatwick, we felt ourselves totally relaxing. We were so wowed by the whole experience at Galley Bay.
The staff was absolutely fantastic (especially Mike (Maitre’d), Timeka (Sea Grape), Rosie (Sea Grape) and Kenny (Bartender)). The beach was lovely, although one thing to remember when swimming - beware of the sharp rocks. There were a few clear places to swim, though. I had the misfortune of cutting my foot on my first day, but that didn’t hinder my vacation.
As part of our honeymoon package, we immediately had an upgrade to a Deluxe Suite which again, I said wow. The balcony said it all for me - the nice wicker loungers, which came in very handy when we experienced a few rainy days – a Wadadli beer and a book!
The honeymoon package also came with a bottle of champagne, chilled. We also took the free catamaran trip – there were several to choose from. We took the Wadadli Cats to Cades Reef, which went on a Tuesday (the Bird Island one took place on a Friday). We purchased a video from Lesley Moore, the film guy on the Catamaran. When we arrived home, we watched it and it was a great capture, not only of the day, but also of Antigua itself. It only lasted 20 minutes, but we thought $40 was money well worth spent.
The amount of food you could eat was astronomical. Don’t get me wrong, the food was presented and cooked to perfection. The choices on the menu were extravagant - including shark, conch, lobster and curried goat – all very nice I might add. If you’re not much of an adventurist with food, I recommend you start here, you might be very much surprised with yourself.
Every evening there was light entertainment from a variety of Caribbean bands – Thursday nights were the best. There was a BBQ buffet put on at the Sea Grape Restaurant and what a BBQ it was! What also added to the ambience of the evening was a Steel Band playing in the background. You can’t resist having a jiggle after your dinner! The Golden Sunset cocktails went down a treat in the evening too – just ask Kenny!
On Sunday nights we recommend you take a trip to Shirley Heights. They had a reggae and steel band night. We enjoyed great food, drink and live music. You see the sunset from the best view in Antigua.
We met some really nice people on our stay. We are even keeping in contact with a couple who got married on the same day as us and were honeymooning at Galley Bay, too.

After several months of research - and with help from this web site - we chose Galley Bay for our one-year anniversary. We definitely made the right choice.
We arrived on a Saturday evening and thus were unable to see the resort in its true splendor. Upon awakening the next morning, we were awestruck at its beauty. We were upgraded - free - to a superior beachfront room and had the waves as our companions when turning out the lights each night.
The room wasn't as large as that of other resorts, but we loved it - it had a large and unique bathroom, shutters and an intimate feel.
The food was fantastic. If you are looking for all you can eat buffets with questionable ingredients and no presentation, don't come here.
The food, we thought, was of excellent quality (and living in Montreal, we are spoiled with choices).
The beach was breathtaking: the sand was soft with no rocks, stretched for ages and the water was quite clear (a captivating green/blue color).
We knew some other guests were unable to swim or snorkel because of choppiness, but we only had to sit out one day (even then, sitting on the sand and allowing the waves to thump our bodies was fabulous). The pool was beautiful, and the sheer tranquility was something we treasured.
The staff was excellent and made our stay even more memorable. They were extremely polite, very friendly, helpful and never pushy (ask Levique to make you one of his special drinks).
The hotel was a haven for birds (a proper sanctuary, in fact) and I admit I had a problem sleeping the first night because of the noise. Thereafter, I got used to it and had no problems.
All in all, the trip was amazing! We are still suffering from withdrawal. |

My wife and I stayed for a week in a premium beachfront suite at Galley Bay. Overall, we had a great time and enjoyed the hotel. However, we would not return.
The hotel was well maintained, with the rooms and facilities located in a strip of land between two salt ponds and the beach. The taxi ride from the airport took about 25-30 minutes and costs $US17 + tip.
We loved our ground floor room, which was right on the beach, with only a couple of palm trees and sun loungers between us and the sea. The room was large, with a massive bathroom, a king sized bed, and a lounge area. The room had a TV (4 channels - CNN, ESPN and 2 others), a free mini bar (beer, water, coke and sprite), tea and coffee facilities and air conditioning.
The only problem with the room was the noise that came through from the other guests upstairs - whenever they walked (stomped?) around, it sounded like a herd of elephants.
The beach was great, and we spent a lot of time there. There were rocks (smooth slabs really, plus some coral) in front of all the villas at the left end of the beach, so swimmers needed to thread a path out or walk down towards the middle of the beach to swim. The upside was that these slabs were home to lots of little fish.
The snorkeling was only average, as the coral was limited, but it would be great for beginners, especially as you could see fish in water only chest deep. We had no trouble getting masks and fins from the water sports area.
We thought the food was okay, but nothing special. Everything was well presented, but there was not enough variety (Sea Grape had the same menus for breakfast and lunch every day, with only dinner changing). That said, it was a great location, as we loved watching the waves only a few metres in front of us. The menus in Gauguin did not change for lunch or dinner. It was in a beautiful location also - very secluded. Service in both restaurants was excellent, with many brilliant staff well-led by Mike, the outstanding maitre'd. Mike was probably the best restaurant manager we have ever seen.
The bars were fine with prime beach front views, although we found service to be patchy. We loved relaxing in the outside bar in the late afternoon sunshine before and after swimming in the pool. The pool was fairly quiet, and didn't strike me as much of a sun trap (not compared to the beach anyway) - this didn't stop us enjoying many swims in it.
We enjoyed Galley Bay a lot, but would not return because of our gradual boredom with the food and our policy of trying to visit new places rather than repeating past holidays. |

My husband and I spent a week at Galley Bay (without children). We wanted a nice getaway and were in need of "r and r". Although our travel agent was not familiar with the resort and found very limited information on it, we selected Galley Bay after much research on the internet.
The beachfront rooms were excellent and well appointed. We tend to like the smaller resorts and thought we would try the all-inclusive route. Well aware that all-inclusive often means "buffet-style" and "recycled"... but not at Galley Bay.
We ordered every meal from the menu and we were completely floored by the quality. The chefs in both restaurants were outstanding.
We found the entire hotel staff to be very accommodating and most went out of their way to please us. The beach was great and the water sports and island trips were fun. We have already made plans to return! |

An amazing week in paradise! Visited: July 2002 |

My husband and I spent a week at Galley Bay in July 2002. It exceeded our expectations. Honestly, it was an exceptional value for the money we spent. It was the most relaxing, private, and romantic vacation. We spent nine days in Hawaii last year, spent three times the money, and we were not as happy as we were during the Galley Bay trip. We highly recommend and plan on returning soon.
We were also impressed with the friendly staff who went out of their way to remember our names. LaToya Johnson; Nola at the reception desk; and FitzRoy were three employees who were an asset to the resort; they were extremely outgoing and helpful. FitzRoy was the water instructor on the beach and offered free windsurfing lessons. You should try it--after a lesson with FitzRoy he will have you windsurfing in no time.
We spent Sunday evening at Shirley Heights. The cab fare was $70.00 (I think). On Sunday nights, they had a barbecue while Reggie Bands played. It was a great way to take in the culture, but I would not recommend going any other day of the week. The view was amazing, but not much to see unless the Sunday barbecue was taking place.
We enjoyed the food at the resort. No complaints and it exceeded our expectations. My husband and I toured all the different rooms to plan for our return visit. I would not recommend the Gogan Cottage, simply because they were not on the water. We enjoyed listening to the ocean at night and would not want to give that up.
We can't wait to go back. |
