4.0 stars They have everything you might want for a quiet restful break. Visited: May 2006

This holiday was booked as a surprise for my 60th birthday. The hotel could not be faulted.

The linen was changed every day. Also, the staff went overboard to help - I have no complaints on this score. In addition, the food was well above average. Finally, the catering staff was most obliging and polite.

2.0 stars I thought it was mediocre. Visited: October 2004

We found it to be a boring, isolated place. The staff seemed indifferent and totally helpless. The beach was coarse and rocky with a steep dropoff.

We also thought the food was so-so, and would be expensive if you went non all-inclusive. In addition, the umbrellas were dilapidated and seemed to be made for midgets. We also found Antigua to be a horror to drive around.

We will never again visit here - even if it were free!

2.0 stars I found there to be much room for improvement. Visited: September 2004

I was disappointed in the Blue Heron. The service was slow and sometimes rude; the food was bad; and when the wind blew a certain direction, the beach smelled strongly of raw sewage. When the beach did not smell, it was nice enough, though.

A room with a view of the ocean would be worth the extra money. Also, take bug spray. Better yet, try the British Virgin Islands or Belize instead.

3.0 stars Rex Blue Heron was a nice hotel with a beautiful beach. Visited: July 2003
Posted by jty2k1999
We stayed at the Rex Blue Heron from July 22-25, 2003. This was a cozy, small, quiet hotel about 12 miles and 25 minutes from the Antigua airport.

The hotel was situated on a beautiful, quiet and empty beach, with only one local beach vendor nearby. It had beach chairs for guests, shaded by "umbrellas" each made with palm leaves, and complete with a small table to hold drinks. We only saw a few other guests on this beach during our stay.

Ours was a superior room on the second floor with a balcony overlooking the hotel pool and a partial ocean view. The room had AC (thank God - it was very hot outside) and a double bed. At this hotel, the biggest bed in any room was a double bed - no queen or king beds. Also, standard rooms did not have AC, and oceanfront rooms were the same size as superior rooms. Being on the top floor, our room had a high ceiling which was nice! However, the room was quite small and had no desk or clock. The double bed was a little too small for us.

The bathroom was pitifully small, the smallest I’ve seen anywhere. Also, the water pressure was very low at night and in the morning - the water even stopped flowing for a few minutes on the second day. The hot water took forever to get hot.

We did not opt for the all-inclusive plan because we wanted to sample different Caribbean foods at different restaurants. We were glad we went with the European plan. We had dinner at OJ's down the street our second night (you can walk on the beach from Blue Heron to OJ's). It was a bar/restaurant which surprisingly had excellent seafood. The fish there was very fresh and quite tasty.

Turner's, a restaurant next to the Blue Heron, also had good food for breakfast and lunch and was very nice and pretty. Unfortunately, it did not open for dinner while we were here.

Guests at the Blue Heron were granted access and use of the facilities of its sister hotel Rex Halcyon Cove at Dickinson Bay. We went to the Halcyon Cove one day and ended up staying there the entire day. It was much bigger, had more amenities, a lot more guests than at the Blue Heron, and definitely a more fun and lively resort.

We were given a safe deposit box for the day, beach towels, and the use of the beach and its chairs, umbrellas, etc. The Halcyon Cove was beachfront. It was right on a gorgeous beach in Dickinson Bay, which in our opinion, may actually have been even prettier than Johnson's Point where the Blue Heron was. The Halcyon Cove was worth consideration.

If you're looking for a small, quiet hotel on Antigua, the Rex Blue Heron should make a good choice if you don't mind its smallness and lack of amenities. Otherwise, look elsewhere, and consider the Rex Halcyon Cove in Dickinson Bay.

3.0 stars Rex Blue Heron is a small, slow paced hotel. Visited: April 2003

My kids and I stayed five nights, and the scenery and beach were awesome. The staff was friendly (see Mark or Howard at the poolside bar and tip well for great drinks!).

The only downside was that the water pressure totally stunk most of the time and the cabbies hung around the hotel like vultures waiting to take someone into town.

Take the snorkeling trip from the hotel to the reef - it was worth it. Also, book the one-day on a catamaran around the island. It was great fun and snorkleing to the same reef.

It was a nice trip overall, but the low point was customs on the way in at the airport........an hour and a half! We met some great friends from Germany, though, so that made it all good.

The Rex Blue Heron is an attractive, good value hotel in a delightful west coast location. The beach is ittle narrow, but seafront rooms - and fresh lobster - are worth the modest premiums.

I just returned from a wonderful vacation in Antigua. Everything was just perfect, especially the hotel. It was small, but really special.

The beach was so beautiful and we only shared it with a few other tourists. Sometimes we had the "whole Carribbean Sea" for us and therefore we called it our "private pool".

The food in the hotel was good, as were the drinks and cocktails. Also, make sure that you use the watersport equipment. They offered windsurfing, sunfish-sailing, snorkeling (Cades Reef), kayak tours, waterskiing...you name it! By the way, if you never tried one of those sports before, the hotel offered certain beginner courses. The cost was really low (I paid $8.00 for a sailing course).

Make sure to take the local bus, if you want to go to St. Johns (it cost less than a dollar per person...much cheaper than the expensive taxis). Also, if you are looking for trips, don´t miss Eli´s tour. It was fantastic (dolphins, turtles, colorful underwater-world, lonely beaches, romantic lunch, island-stories...all inclusive!).

II can also recommend the kayak trip with "antiguapaddles", especially the little race at the end of the tour which was fun! Also the weather was perfect!

4.0 stars A great hotel in a stunning location. Visited: October 2002

My partner and I have had a fantastic stay at this hotel. Our room was spotless and very comfortable. All the staff was very helpful and extremely courteous.

The food was varied and plentiful, and thelocation, with its sun soaked, white sandy beach, would be difficult to better. I do not know of a better place to go for a relaxing stress-free vacation.

The brochures do not do this place justice. Thanks for making this a perfect holiday.

Having just returned from Antigua, my partner and I had a great time here. This hotel was clean well placed.

The standard rooms got very hot, so I would recommend you opt for superior. You can upgrade for an extra $10 (U.S) a night. It was worth it.

It was a nice hotel to relax and soak up the sun. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and the food for us was plentiful and tasty for its rating. In-house taxis were expensive. However, there was a bus stop outside and only cost (a maximum of $2 (US) to travel to St. Johns.

If I returned to Antigua, I would stay here again.

4.0 stars Beautiful beach and lovely staff Visited: June 2001

My wife and I just returned from a perfect holiday. Food was basic but nice and the locals were friendly. The hotel staff was excellent and helpful.

The room was perfect; Ours was #105 and you could see the sunset from the shower. I must say it was the best 7-day holiday we have ever had. In the beginning of June The Rex was empty, which was good. You didn’t have to worry about not getting a sun bed.
A good holiday!

4.0 stars Although it was only a 2-star hotel, it was a fantastic stay. Visited: May 2001

We had a beachfront room (no. 105). This was very clean and had an extremely good location right on the island’s best beach. The staff was extremely friendly, especially Logan and Sandra.

The facilities were okay and trips to Cades Reef were $20—I saw 2 barracuda, etc.

The food was only average, but you have to expect this when it is only a 2 star. Everything apart from the food was 5 star!

2.0 stars Disappointing holiday Visited: December 2000

The brochure looks fantastic, the beach is beautiful, golden sands and crystal clear waters, but this Hotel "Rex Blue Heron" requires a massive input of cash.

The food was consantly the same, with the evening meals being brought out the following day for lunch.

The was a shortage of room & beach towels, which were bleached, well worn and thread bare.

The staff were very helpful, but morale was extremly low.

Such a shame for a hotel with an ideal setting.

5.0 stars Beatiful white sandy beach with crystal blue water. Visited: January 2000

My husband and I have been to Antigua many times. This property's beach is breath taking. Clean, clear blue waters with white sandy beach facing the west. Wonderful place for sunsets.

The hotel is very nice, rooms clean, service great, food good. You want a room on the bottom level, facing the ocean.

It is pricey but if you drink alcohol it's worth it just to be on this beach. It's a very romantic spot.
