4.0 stars Overall, it was a great time - loved the atmosphere. Visited: August 2002

This was a very nice resort. It was family oriented, with lots of kids there!

We enjoyed a beautiful beach, with white sand, and aqua/green water which was very clear! Some girls did go topless. Some should not!

The food was pretty good for a buffet style. Breakfast was the same every day, and that got boring. There was an extra charge for laundry services, so pack enough clothes. The time share orientation was more than 90 minutes. We cut the guy short by not taking the tour of the place. We got a lot of pressure from this one lady. We had to say "no" 10 times! We got our free T-shirts and towel, though.

The Italian restaurant was good. Also, they provided a very easy check-in and check-out. No one was in a hurry here. If you want a cab, make sure you can wait a while.

In addition, snorkeling is a must. That was awesome. You may want to bring your own snorkel set. Use time of their equipment was one hour and you had to give them your keys.

The tile floors stayed dirty. Our feet never seemed clean. The rooms were okay, we got a hair dryer, but it was weak. The bars were great, the guys were so polite - everyone was polite here. The dolphin experience was unforgettable - a must do!

There was a lot of litter on the beach in the evening. People left their plastic cups all over the place. They had trash-cans, but no one seemed to use them. They cleaned and scraped the beach every morning, though.

We had a great time and would go again. This was our first visit.

3.0 stars A good deal for the money. Visited: July 2002

I booked our trip at the Viva Fortuna based on the reviews I read from this web site.

Overall, our trip was pretty good. The beach was wonderful, but did have a lot of seaweed. The sand was so soft and there were plenty of chairs throughout the beach.

All the reviews raved about the food, but that was where I was a little disappointed. The same food was served over and over again and was not all that great to begin with. If you want to eat at the Italian restaurant you had better make reservations first thing in the morning.

After reading the reviews on this site, I was very surprised at how friendly the check-in staff was. As long as you didn't ask for anything, the staff was always friendly. We did not have hot water for the first three days of our trip and the staff couldn't have cared less. We asked twice for extra pillows for our room and, of course, we never got them.

The rooms had no extra amenities. If you were lucky enough to have hot water, the rooms were for showering and sleeping only. Do not get suckered into attending the time share sales pitch. Getting one water activity at half price was not worth the 2 1/2 hour high pressure sales pitch! Do not waste your valuable time.

Overall, Viva Fortuna was a good value for the money. We went to the Bahamas to relax on the beach and to have plenty of drinks and that was what we got.

5.0 stars It was our best vacation yet, we are going back before year end! Visited: June 2002
Posted by rgolby
This was our best vacation in the last 25 years. Having just been to the Caribbean, this was slightly better. The personal service and all inclusive food and drinks were great. But - ask for mixed drinks as "light" i.e. "Yellow Bird Light", otherwise they are too strong.

The snorkeling was great. We swam out to the marker and saw hundreds of species. Just a few were trumpets, angel fish, tiger fish, groupers, starfish, stingrays, flounder, octopus, barracuda, and even a shy nerf shark. Take your own mask and tube, or purchase a good set at the dive shop. Free supplies were limited; but fins were abundant.

The surf was mild in fair weather, much like a lake. The water temperature was in the 80s. The outside pool was warm. We enjoyed the free sailboat, windsurfing, and scuba lessons. We took a timeshare tour and enjoyed a free parasail and half price for the glass bottom boat. Highly recommended!

I took the one-day scuba course with a 45-foot dive to a sunken tug. Anyone can do this. The certified staff took care of us first-timers.

The rooms were not for pleasure. They were for sleep and showering. Get out on the beach or relax in the open-air roofed bar and dining area. I have to be careful what I eat, and the food was varied and superb. Pizza was served at lunch and was great. The desserts were mouth watering.

At night, we enjoyed the dance and conversations with the performers at the disco. It was geared toward the younger crowd, but this old man had fun!

Rent a car, ride a bike or take a taxi for one day in town. Walk the beach and see the dolphins in the morning.

We enjoyed the nightly shows. Most were adult-oriented - so parents beware. The performers were from many countries and introductions were in English, French, Spanish and German.

We had such a great time, we plan on going back again and again.

2.0 stars Resort grounds very nice, food disappointing... Visited: April 2002
Posted by williamsburrows
My husband and I, along with our two children (ages 4 and 7), visited this resort during Spring break. We chose the resort because it was an all-inclusive, had a kids club and was a quick trip from the States. Well the trip was a bust on two out of three of those reasons. The food was very disappointing. We had to suffer through practically the same dishes every night (my kids lived off pizza) and we never got the opportunity to sample any local dishes. The fruit, which was always watermelon, canteloupe and/or honeydew melon, was tasteless; and my kids never went to the kids' club. It just didn't seem interesting enough to them.

Our room was adequate: the bathroom door was broken and the light outside on the patio was out. We reported these things to the front desk and nothing was fixed. The resort is secluded which is a good thing if you just want to stay on the grounds; a bad thing if you want to do some sightseeing as the taxis are very expensive.

The staff responsible for entertainment are very friendly; the hotel staff a little surly. We will not be going back.

5.0 stars I liked it so much I am going back! Visited: March 2002

I was at Viva Fortuna this past March (2002) and it was up there with the "best times" I have ever had.

I have traveled all over, and the people at Fortuna were close to the best that I have encontered. I enjoyed the activity coordinators and entertainers the best.

And even though the weather wasn't the best, it didn't affect the fun we had. We partied with the staff until sunrise. The staff was great and I felt so at home.

I am going back next April and taking a friend with me. The only problem is now I have to wait til then.

We thought this hotel was terrible. My friend went there several months before we did and left after one night. We thought the food was terrible, and the drinks were bad.

Also, there was nothing to do at night. We were stuck here for 15 nights! Town was very far away and seemed dangerous. We were asked as soon and we got into town if we wanted to buy any drugs.

5.0 stars An excellent experience. Visited: December 2001
Posted by mikesid2000m
An excellent experience, where sun, beach and entertainment collide into a vacation to remember. A beautiful hotel on a huge beach with all the amenities, snorkeling, windsurfing and sailing for free. The staff was from all over the world. They ran games all day and a stage show at night. I was never bored. The Butch Harmon School of Gulf, on the Island not the resort, was a special treat.

The rooms at Club Fortuna are not bad but not first rate; however, the food, staff and beach are all top shelf and will require a return trip.

4.0 stars A very nice honeymoon. Visited: August 2001
Posted by crazy_chickie99
We had a very good time. We were warned about how rude the services were at guest check in, so that didn't bother us too much. Otherwise, the room we had was decent, with two queen-sized beds with a beach view.

The beach was private and cleaned every morning. There were activities all day for the kids and family. Or you could go out on your own and grab a kayak, or snorkel out in front. The beach was topless, but not everyone does it.

The drinks were served in plastic cups and most of the time were too strong. You have to tell them light on the liquor. The food was good; they had a good variety of meats, fish, fruits, pasta, salad, and desserts.

The staff put on a show every night around 9:30. Not all of the shows were good, but when you realize it’s the staff, it’s entertainment.

We did rent one of the scooters; I don't recommend this. If you want to rent a scooter go to Port Lucaya and rent an automatic one or get a dune buggie. There aren't too many things to do on the island, but relax on the beach. I recommend going to the casino, the Bazaar, going snorkeling at Paradise Cove, the booze cruise, and the best time we had was at the Dolphin Experience.

Overall, we had a great time. I would love to go back again sometime in the fall when its a little cooler.

5.0 stars The vacation of a lifetime! Visited: July 2001

This was my family's first trip to the Bahamas, and we had the time of our life. The resort was excellent, and the employees were so friendly; they made us all feel welcome.

The food, activities, and theater were great, and the disco bar was a blast! Everything you could ever want was right there you never had to leave the resort for anything. There were eight of us in our group and no one wanted to leave, not even the kids.

The entertainment staff was wonderful. The beach was beautiful. I would recommend this place to anyone traveling to the Bahamas. I had such a great time I couldn't imagine vacationing anywhere else. I have a feeling Club Fortuna will see a lot more of me and my family in the future!

2.0 stars Good Value for the Money Visited: April 2001
Posted by normage
This was my first trip to Grand Bahama Island. I wanted to be on the beach so I selected Viva Fortuna. The food was very good for an all-inclusive; good variety and well presented, lots of salads. The drinks were good, however, not premium. The beach was below average due to the abundance of coral. It wasn't particularly good for swimming, but I did find it very useful for practicing my snorkeling.

We found the room to be clean, but definitely in need of refurbishing. The Italian restaurant was ok. The weight room was actually well equipped.

We took taxis into Freeport nightly for the gambling at the Bahamia. A decent casino I might add. The entertainment there on the weekend was very good. Since there are cheap direct flights from Atlanta, I would definitely go back again.

We were there for our marriage and honeymoon. We were more than pleased with the service and the hotel. We have nothing bad to say about Club Fortuna, only that we had the time of our lives. We are going back in 2002 and hope to go once a year. This is a great place and not to crowded. Everything you need is there, food, fun and lots of activities. We recommend Club Fortuna to everyone. Go and have a great time!

2.0 stars You get what you pay for! Visited: June 2000

This was my first Caribbean trip and my partner's first trip to the Bahamas. Our initial
thoughts on Club Fortuna were not at all impressive.

As a couple, we were initially put in one of the blocks outside of the children’s playground area, next to the "parents from hell." After several heated complaints (both from us and the couple on the opposite side) we were eventually moved to a beachside room.

We had already heard that the front desk staff was not exactly on top of things and was rude, however, nothing could have prepared us for just how rude they were. Having come from a customer service background, I was appalled at their approach.

Once we settled into our new room, we found the resort to be a fairly good value for the money. The food really was very good with plenty of choice and the chefs were happy to boil or fry you some eggs if you didn't like the buffets.

The entertainment staff was fantastic and if you have children, you can relax and be sure they are left in capable hands. The staff members clearly loved their jobs and worked all hours of the day and night to put on a superb show every evening.

The beach was okay, although it was nothing incredible.

The quality of the rooms was very sub-standard. While we didn't expect "The Ritz" we
were disappointed at just how shabby the rooms were. Basic would be the best
description, with two queen-sized beds, a scruffy Formica shelf housing the tv and a
dodgey lamp, a Formica bedside cabinet and that was it. The bathrooms were not any better. I personally would have expected something more stylish as this was not a particularly cheap holiday.

I doubt we would return as first impressions do leave their mark. We found that a lot of young American guys visited for extended weekend breaks, plied themselves with alcohol and were very loud and aggressive in the bar area. The security guards seemed reluctant to get involved as the group had apparently purchased a timeshare apartment!

4.0 stars Fabulous - sums it up Visited: June 2000

I must say before my husband and I left for Club Fortuna on June 16, 2000, we still had our doubts after reading some of the comments made here. To all those who said it was kid unfriendly.....you must have been at a different resort. I could not believe how they catered to children. The children had as much fun and free time to enjoy the resort as the adults.

The staff were very entertaining and catered to all. The bar was great, with only one exception, the beer variety. The different drinks were great. The food was out of this world. The variety of food was outstanding. You will never go hungry here. Even with the different time schedules for serving, the snack was more than enough to tied you over until the next sitting. I felt like we were eating all the time.

The staff were very helpful and kind. The one thing I did not like was the telephone service...first you must activate your phone by leaving a $100 deposit. The charges were $3.00 per minute. Talk fast...very fast. Much of the time the phone card may not work from any phone, and cell phones...forget it, that was the worse.

The club does have a coral reef about 200 yards out with lots of pretty fish. Ladies, although you can't go nude..topless was allowed. There was a nude area further along the beach. It's a long stretch of beach, so enjoy. Next time we're taking our children.

5.0 stars Club Fortuna is a wonderful resort, it offers all you can want! Visited: January 2000

The first time we vacationed at Club Fortuna was our first trip to the Bahamas. We found Club Fortuna to be one of the most relaxing, romantic and exciting resorts that we've visited. The beach was simply magnificent. The food superb and the room accommodations outstanding. The friendly staff made you feel right at home. Well, I tell you, we were sold the minute we entered the open-air lobby and were greeted with drinks.

Our vacation at Club Fortuna not only rejuvenated our bodies but our love of life as well. The romantic strolls on the beach at night, waking up to an ocean view and just plain relaxing is what we really needed. You really didn't have to leave the resort at all.

The non-stop entertainment, activities and open bar kept us comfortable and content. Well, needless to say, we left Club Fortuna on cloud nine and returned nine months later.

3.0 stars Club Fortuna was OK Visited: January 2000

I'm sorry but I found my reception at Club Fortuna to be less than desirable. I was not greeted with a drink, nor with a smile. Checking in was not a breeze, but a 45 minute wait. We had to locate the bellman to get our luggage.

Once we got to our room (which was quite confusing to get to) we found them to be satisfactory. However, there were no towels in the bathroom. We called the front desk about it and the woman who answered the phone was very nonchalant about it. After about 2 hours, towels still were not brought to the room. We ended up having to ask one of the housekeepers to get towels for us.

The resort itself was very nice, and a majority of the staff were extremely friendly. The food in the main dining room was very good, but we found the food at the in house restaurant to be mediocre. The beach was pretty big and very clean, however there was a little too much seaweed and rocks.

Overall, our group had a great time at Club Fortuna, but there are obviously a few things that are lacking. I recommend the place more so for a vacation (you can't beat the price for a fast weekend getaway) but do not recommend it to newlyweds. You will be disappointed if you are expecting individual attention one would expect on their honeymoon.

Lastly, for an All-Inclusive resort, I found it tacky for the woman who greeted us to announce "Though tips are not expected, they are greatly appreciated."

Check in took too long, and not friendly. It would have helped to have a 20 minute orientation as to all the services available. Did not find anyone in the front lobby friendly.

The staff in charge of the sports were excellent instructors and organizers; and friendly. Liked the tournaments everyday and the prizes for the winners. That added a special touch.

The beach was beautiful, clean and clear that made snorkeling and swimming wonderful. For those three things I would return.

The bar tenders were very accommodating, and I was impressed that they were attentive to the small children when they wanted something to drink. The food was unimpressive. The Italian restaurant was an extension of the all-inclusive, or you could pay $28 extra for dinner. I ordered an all-inclusive item that was a shrimp pasta that had few shrimp.

The local singer that came twice was excellent. Some of the staff entertainment was excellent, and some was not. The rooms were kept clean, but they were slow to change the towels, and clean them. Liked the fact that there were so many activities to choose from, the many shade areas on the beach and a 90 minute flight to get t
here. Great for a long weekend.

My friends and I took our vacation to Club Viva Fortuna. We had a blast! There were things to do (such as windsurfing, marengue lessons, and snorkeling) from dusk to dawn, and best of all it was all FREE. The staff were great and made me feel like I was Jennifer Grey in Dirty Dancing. Food and drinks were at your disposal at all times and the on-premise disco meant you never had to leave the resort. I wish we never did!

My husband and I were a little skeptical because we saw so many of the other hotels that people were being dropped off at. Well, we were greeted at Club Fortuna with a great staff that took our bags. When we got checked in our bags were at our door. They also pick them up for you when you are checking out.

We did not leave the property. We were never hungry. The drinks were fantastic - I highly recommend the Strawberry Daquiri and the Rum Runner. There were volleyball games, ping pong tables, just whatever physical activity floats your boat. They did a show called the Mystery Music Box that was an imitation of Micheal Jackson, M.C. Hammer, Lionel Richey etc.

The staff is multi-lingual which is very impressive. One staff member was speaking Spanish and when she realized the person was French she broke right into it and didn't even miss a beat.

We hated to leave.

All-inclusive buffet-style food was average to good, and the La Trattoria restaurant was just a repeat of the all-inclusive. The front desk staff were inattentive and we were plagued by salespeople who wanted to take us on a 90-minute tour with the intention of selling us time-share. I came to relax, have fun, not to be bothered by sales people. I can do that at home.

The entertainment and daily activities, like volleyball, were great!! The staff, who planned & performed in the shows and conducted the activities, were multi-talented, fun, and very friendly! There were other guests from around the world, some friendly, some just wanted to be alone.

I would return just to enjoy the beach, the bar/music, the entertainment, and the local flavor. Just one word of advice, don't talk to the salespeople!

In August, I took my family on vacation. We visited a couple of places in Florida and our last stop was Bahamas. I have learned the true meaning of relaxation and it is all due to the staff at Club Fortuna. From the moment we entered the resort, we were surrounded by friendly and caring staff. My children were entertained during activity time, while I spent some "grown- up" time around the pool.

My son and my sister were a part of the nightly entertainment, which was put together by the staff. We all had a good time. We enjoyed ourselves so much, I invested in a club membership at Club Fortuna. This is my way of ensuring a fun filled vacation every year. The best part about it, you never have to leave the resort. All the entertainment and even the shopping is right there on the property. I would recommend Club Fortuna to anyone who wants to fully enjoy themselves on a vacation.
