My wife and I really enjoyed our four-night stay at the Westin Resort in Freeport. The room and beds were very comfortable, and our view was fabulous.

The marketplace across the street was excellent for shopping and bar hopping. I found the food on the island to be average in quality - and a bit expensive.

However, here are some tips. Avoid Tiajauna's, unless you want to spend $9.00 for a bad margarita and enjoy nachos made with Cheese Whiz.

I thought the seafood dinner buffet at Willy Broadleafs in the Westin was very good. The cost was $49.00 per person, but they served endless spiny lobster tails, shrimp, tuna, snapper, steak, etc.. This price included soft drinks and tip.

On whole, the food in the resort was good. We had a good burger and fries at the China Grill, and the breakfast buffet was decent for $16.00.

For the best Bahama Mama, try Rum Runners in the marketplace. The place was a little dingy, but a lot of fun. They also had very good fried shrimp and conch, to my surprise. The maketplace also had some spots for an inexpensive breakfast. I found the Carribean Cafe to be the best in quality of food and service.

Our favorite place for dinner was the Stoned Crab. They had good food, drinks, and service and right on the Tiano Beach.

5.0 stars It is relaxing and exotic - all you would wish from a stay in the Caribbean. Visited: May 2005

This was my first time in the Caribbean. Not only was it in a great place, it was also for a great event: my sister's wedding!

Everything was so nice. The hotel was so neat, and the staff was always kind and ready to make us feel at home. The pools were the best part of it all: they blended in with the beach in a unique way I had never seen before.

Also, the food and the atmosphere were both exceptional. They served wonderful local beverages and cognac together in the hotel bar, which had an old style classic bar appeal. It was super.

The rooms were fantastic, and the beds were huge. It was really a great place to stay.

We had a two-night stay at the Sheraton as part of a package with Discovery Cruise lines, which provided the day sail to and from Port Everglades (Ft. Lauderdale).

The beach was first class with white sand and beautiful clear turquoise water. Unfortunately, the water temperature in the ocean was a bit brisk, and the extensive and picturesque pools were hardly any warmer. They didn't seem heated much, if at all. Thus, even though the weather was nice, we saw very few people in the water.

Not surprisingly, the restaurants in the hotel complex were upscale and rather expensive, even the one by the pool. We mostly wound up eating in restaurants in the nearby Lucaya Marketplace, which were much more reasonable and more than adequate.

We were given a room that looked inland and overlooked an extensive roof. We don't know why they didn't offer us an ocean view, since it appeared that the hotel was at most 1/3 occupied and many ocean view rooms were vacant. Maybe we should have asked for an upgrade.

The room was spacious and in reasonably good condition, but the bathroom was quite small in comparison with no vanity top space, which was inconvenient.

The staff was mostly courteous and friendly. Overall, we felt the resort was worthwhile.

After booking our honeymoon at the Sheraton Balhabor In Floria, my wife and I soon learned that they were rude and over-priced! We will never go back there. So, we chose to jump on over to the Bahamas to save our honeymoon. The Westin in Freeport was amazing!

The staff was so pleasant and helpful. The hotel rooms were all ocean view (and the view!). This hotel saved our honeymoon and we will go back! If you are torn between the Westin in Freeport and some other hotel, trust me it has the best beach and service on the island!

5.0 stars This was a really great Starwood Resort! Visited: August 2004
Posted by susan_sieger
We stayed at the Westin at Our Lucaya in August, 2004. The resort was broken up into three pieces, going from right to left if facing the ocean: The Sheraton, The Westin - Breakers Cay and the Westin - Lighthouse Point.

The Sheraton was a long building with approximately four floors. The Westin Breaker's Cay was a ten-story building, and the Westin Lighthouse Point was a series of two-story buildings. The Sheraton and Breaker's Cay were previously owned resorts that Starwood bought and refurbished. They then built the new Lighthouse Point area and tied all three areas together with paths and pools and restaurants.

There were eight pools, including two infinity pools (one with a swim-up bar). There was a giant water slide at one of the Sheraton pools. There was never a problem with available lounge chairs and as long as you didn't mind shifting, there was plenty of shade even without an umbrella.

The beach/ocean was very well maintained and there were many lounge chairs (and help to set it up) available. Another nice touch was the number of lifeguards and security at every pool and along the beaches.

We didn't spend much time at the Sheraton pools, but instead went between the pools outside our buiding and the gorgeous infinity pool outside Lighthouse Point. Lighthouse Point seemed much quieter and would be a great choice if you're traveling without children. We had our two boys (9 and 10) with us, so they were happy swimming or snorkeling.

Our rooms were great - we had a one-bedroom suite which included a separate living room/kitchen combo, bedroom with one king size bed and huge bath and another adjoining bedroom with two double beds and bath. There was plenty of room for the four of us!

The cleaning staff was great - our room was typically cleaned by noon every day. I usually tried to expedite this by speaking to the housekeeping staff to let them know our typical schedule and when we liked to have the room cleaned. Sometimes that worked, sometimes it didn't, but it doesn't hurt to let them know!

Everyone was very courteous and we never experienced any bad service. We did not eat at any of the restaurants on the resort, mainly because there were much cheaper options across the street at Port Lucaya, including a Domino's, Subway and Dunkin' Donuts. (If you go, try the Italian restaurant La Dolce Vita - it was excellent). There was a brand new casino on the property that was clean and well run. It reminded me of a small Vegas strip casino.

All in all, we had a great experience. My husband is Starwood Platinum because of his work demands, and consequently we have stayed at many Starwood resorts. This was one of the nicest and well run we have been to.

My wife and I get away once a year for a long weekend while my parents watch our three young kids. This year, I was fortunate enough to book us into the Westin Our Lucaya. I had read the reviews posted on this site and noted that all of the most recent posts (after mid-2002) were very positive with some minor issues noted. We could not have had a better trip.

When we arrived at the resort, we requested a room at Lighthouse Pointe based on the information we had seen here about it being most secluded and couples-oriented. The deskclerk searched for quite some time, then consulted with the manager on duty and informed us that they were going to upgrade us to a Family Suite in Lighthouse Pointe for our three-night stay.

It was a fabulous corner suite overlooking the beach. While you can never expect this sort of upgrade, it was indicative of the excellent service we received during our entire stay.

We ate a heavy breakfast/brunch each day at Willy Broadleaf. As noted in other reviews, the prices at the resort are what you would expect, but the food was excellent and the service was very good as well. Friday night we also ate at Willy Broadleaf. Each Friday they served a special seafood buffet that was also excellent.

Our taxi driver had recommended a very nice restaurant across the street from Our Lucaya called The Ferry House. It was located overlooking the Lucaya Port. We ate there Saturday night, and it was a wonderful meal, with great food, great presentation, and great service. I had the mixed seafood grill smothered in cheese, which was a signature dish for them, and it was fabulous. Dinner for two was about $100, but well worth it.

We did bring along a lot of snack foods and we went through everything we brought. There were some small markets in the Port Lucaya shopping complex across from the resort if you forget something.

The pools were great. We liked the pool by Lighthouse Pointe as it was the quietest of the pools, but the others were all unigue as well. When we return with our kids, I'm sure we'll spend a lot of time at the Sheraton's pool with the Castle Waterslide.

We also utilized the fitness center quite a bit. It was located in Lighthouse Pointe, which was very convenient. There was a good selection of cardio, nautilus-style, and weight systems. I had to wait for a treadmill one time, but only for ten minutes or so.

Overall, my wife and I had one of the best vacations we've ever had. The resort was great, with plenty to do and see. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The food was very good. The facilities were really nice and clean. We are both looking forward to returning to Our Lucaya.

5.0 stars The Westin is a lovely ocean getaway. Visited: May 2003

We just returned from five days at the Westin at Our Lucaya and we had a wonderful time. The Westin cost more than the nearby Sheraton, but it was a much nicer establishment and worth the extra money.

If you want a quiet, serene, romantic getaway, opt for the Lighthouse Pointe section of the resort. The rest of the resort was geared towards guests who want a faster pace or who have children.

Our oceanview room was lovely and the beach was clean, large and secluded in the Lighthouse Pointe Section. We have traveled to more than ten islands and we were a little skeptical after reading some of the reviews on this site. However, we enjoyed ourselves tremendously and we are planning to return.

I noticed that some of the visitors on this site complained that the prices at the hotel restaurants were a little high, but that's true of most resorts. Yes, a hamburger may have gone for about $10 at the Westin resort in Bahamas, but that's the same price that you would pay for a hamburger at a Westin in the U.S. too.

If you want to pay lower prices, you could always go across the street to the Port Lucaya shopping village. While they had some tasty selections there (e.g. Zorba's and Giovanni's), you won't receive the white glove service that we received at the hotel's restaurant called Churchill's. It all depends on what you're looking for.

Overall, we would highly recommend this resort. We enjoyed a great room, great location, great food and great service.

3.0 stars Hotel beautiful, prices ridiculous Visited: May 2003

We stayed at the Reef Village. The hotel was so beautiful, clean, and the staffs attention to detail was amazing. The prices for food, drinking even coffee were through the roof. Breakfast for 4 ran us about 70 dollars. Most of the restaurants were never open, and there was no nightlife unless you walked into town. There was no variety at lunchtime around the poolbars for food or drinks. We went with one other couple, and the food ended up costing us the amount of one persons airfare plus 1/2 of the accomodations. I felt for the staff because they charge 15% gratuity right off the bat which makes you less likely to leave any cash tips.

5.0 stars I did my homework...and you should, too. Visited: May 2003

I spent three months researching places to go with our three- and five-year-old. We didn't want the expense and the hustle of the Atlantis with two kids...nor did we want to gamble. In the past, we had gone to an all-inclusive in Jamaica and felt unappreciated and overcharged. However, we did want a relaxing vacation with nice accommodations. Flat out - this hotel was nice and it fit the bill.

Spend the extra money and get a suite or room at the Windham Breakers Cay (the middle of the three hotels on the resort). I felt it was the nicest of the three.

The hotel accomodations were first class, the staff was terrific and friendly and we felt that we were appreciated. If you can, use AAA and get an oceanview suite...it was well worth the discount.

For activities, there were six or seven pools...I lost count. They had nicely cleaned surroundings, pools for kids, for couples, a swim-up bar for those who liked to indulge in frosty drinks. There were lap pools, wading pools, large pools, water fountains...it was all good and I was impressed. There was even a water tube for kids.

All water sports were offered, and there was a crystal clear ocean with a clean beach - which was about ten feet from the pool, many shops and restaurants across the street.

Get the kids' hair braided at the resort. Also, go do the Dolphin activities off-site...as well as jetskiing. The people there really let you take them out far.

Go with the on-site food from Willy Broadleaf's. It was better than what was in town. Don't get me wrong, we tried two native restaurants in Port Lucaya (the shops across the street) and the people were nice, but frankly as Rodney said..."I had better food at the ballgame."

In short, you will enjoy this resort. Trust me...I'm very picky and there simply was nothing to complain about. My wife and I loved it and plan to go back again soon.

P.S. When leaving Freeport airport, get there at least two hours early...there are about five checkpoints before getting on your plane...ugh!

5.0 stars Our Lucaya is fun for the entire family. Visited: January 2003

I was at the resort from 1/12/03 through 1/17/03 with my wife and daughters (ages four and a half and 15 months), and my wife's father, mother, brother and sister. We had three rooms and had no problems checking in.

We stayed in Reef Village and I found the rooms to be very nice. One of the rooms did not have a refrigerator and two of the three safes did not work properly. We called down to the desk and we had a fridge and the safes fixed within 10 minutes.

January was the coolest month in the Bahamas, so the resort was pretty empty, which was nice. I had expected some of the restaurants to be closed, but they were all open.

We had breakfast at Barracudas every morning (in Reef Village. It was a buffet and had a nice variety. We usually had lunch by the pool. Service was slow and everything was expensive, but I expected that, so it didn't bother me. Although I have to say we got great service more often than slow service.

We had dinner at Churchill's one night which was excellent. And we also dined at Portobello's, which was also good. Another night we went across the street to Port Lucaya and had dinner at Giovanni's which was also very good. The food was actually better than I had expected. Being from New Jersey, we get spoiled with good Italian food, and the Italian food at Giovanni's was comparable.

We golfed at both the Reef and Lucayan courses. Both were nice, but the Lucayan course was older and more mature. If you had to play one, play the Lucayan.

The grounds of the hotel and the beach were in great shape and there was plenty to do for my four-year-old. I believe the property is being taken over by Sheraton this month and the casino is suppose to open in a few months.

We went to the casino at the Holday Inn/Renaissance, which was about a 10 minute cab ride. It was nothing fancy and they could have had some more tables open. If you want Vegas or Atlantic City atmosphere don't go, but if you just want to gamble it's fine. Everyone agreed we would go back in the future and I would recommend going if late February or March when it's a little warmer.

4.0 stars Our Lucaya is a nice place for a honeymoon. Visited: December 2002
Posted by sund1
We read all the reviews here and were a little anxious about the quality of the resort, but we were pleasantly surprised.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon at Our Lucaya from December 13-17, 2002. You would think that there would have been a lot of people here for the holiday season, but the resort was a ghost town. They had to have had less than 10% occupancy.

That had its advantages and disadvantages. The advantages were that we felt like we had our own little resort and service was quick. The disadvantages were that several of the restaurants were closed or had very short hours and employees literally forced themselves upon you to get tipped (one bell hop pulled the luggage out of my husband's hands as we were putting it in the taxi and, of course, expected a tip for the 5 seconds of hauling he did!).

They were renovating the Reef Village so we were upgraded to Breaker's Cay which was very nice. Food was very expensive on the resort (Willy Broadleaf's buffet was around $30!), so we frequented Subway, which was across the road, for lunch every day.

Lunch for two was about $15. Iries was our favorite restaurant on the resort...try the jerk pork...yummy! We also ate at two other restaurants in Port Lucaya... Shenanigan's, which was wonderful, and Tiajuana's which was horrible (not sure why anyone would recommend it).

If you get the Island Fun Package, water sports are "free" but usually have catches, so be sure to get the low-down the first day as they are not run by the resort itself. Two-for-one golf ran us $95 for two people. The casino was not finished yet, so we went to the Royal Oasis to gamble.

While playing golf, we learned from a competing resort manager that Our Lucaya is being managed by the Hutchinson Group, but will soon be taken over by the Sheraton Group, so we are wondering if things will change significantly. Overall, we felt like the resort was beautiful and clean, and we had a nice, relaxing honeymoon.

4.0 stars The best resort on Grand Bahama Island! Visited: October 2002
Posted by georgegetz
My husband and I took our first real Caribbean vacation, and we are glad we stayed in this resort. Once we entered the lobby to check in, the view of the grand lawn and the ocean was amazing.

After reading different reviews from this site, I didn't know what to expect. I reserved a room at the Reef Village, however, I asked for the best room we could get. Reef Village was being remodeled, and we were upgraded to Light House Point. The room had an incredible view of the gardens and the beautiful beach. Honestly, it was breathtaking.

The staff was very nice, helpful and friendly. But everything in the resort and around the island was very slow. We totally recommend the buffet breakfast and dinners at Willy Broadleaf, it was great food, and the chefs cook your dish in front of you.

I loved the beach - it was wonderful, clean and the water was clear (some days the visibility was better than others). However, there were no rocks - just smooth sand. My husband loved the infinity pool and we really enjoyed the Light House Point section, it seemed to be the most relaxing.

We had a great Caribbean vacation and we recommend Our Lucaya.

My wife and I had some good and bad experiences while staying at Lighthouse Point. After reading both good and bad reviews, we were not sure what to expect.

Check in was quick and easy, but we reserved an ocean view room and were not given one without first complaining. After check in, we were told our room was "that way" with no directions or information. We had to find our own way across the property. When we asked staff members, the first two were unable to properly direct or assist us.

Do not touch the mini bar unless you plan on using it. They tried charging us for lifting an item out, looking at it and then replacing it.

We asked for a fridge, and had one delivered within 10 minutes. We also took a $6 cab ride to the grocery store and stocked up on soda, snacks and other quick in room meal items. We only ate at Willybroadleafs on the resort, and did not eat at any other restaurants because 3/4 of them were closed due to the slow season. We ate mostly at Subway, Dominoes and across the street in the marketplace (Tijuanas was great for Mexican and there were a few Greek restaurants).

The pools were clean, well maintained and very beautiful. There was more than enough room for everyone at each pool. The beach was raked daily, but a lot of litter was just raked over (not too bad, but still noticable).

We found the staff very friendly and knowledgable (except the first day). The tour desk was staffed daily, as well as a convienence store/pharmacy on the resort.

We parasailed with OceanMotion, right on the property, but all other water sports were too expensive. We made our own reservations to swim with the dolphins. We took the bus to the other advertised marketplace in Freeport called International Bazaar, but it is the same as the one directly across the street from the resort.

4.0 stars A very relaxing and enjoyable vacation. Visited: August 2002

We just returned from a five-day stay at Our Lucaya with our two girls (10 years and 5 years old). We were upgraded to Breakers Cay with a room overlooking the pool and beach. What a beautiful view!

We were on the family plan which meant our girls ate free. The food was okay... the best restaurant on premise, by far, was Iries. China Grille was a good lunch place. As the resort was not very crowded at all, we found the service and the staff to be friendly and very polite. Whatever we requested, from extra towels in the room to reservations at the Dolphin Experience, we were quickly accommodated.

The pool at Breakers Cay was a little too warm, but we switched to the pool by the water bar and that was suitable. The kids did not go to Camp Lucaya because it was a vacation for all of us to spend together. While the Reef Village pool was geared more toward families, we tended to stay at the Breakers Cay pool which had other children as well.

The kids would love to go back. In speaking with other guests, we heard very few complaints. The show at Barricudas was a little lame and hard to see from our table, and the buffet was mediocre, but we did not let that bother us.

It was nice to be able to walk over to Port Lucaya Marketplace for mini shopping excursion.

We would definitely return, even though it was a bit pricy when all was said and done.

Our Lucaya was something out of a post card. Check in and out was very fast!

The food at the resort was pricy, but worth every penny. Willybroadleaf is a must. The staff was very nice, but they moved at Bahamian speed. It was perfectly located by the market and everything was right there!

Trust me - go see it for yourself!

4.0 stars A great place to relax, and the best place on the island. Visited: July 2002

We just got back from a week in Our Lucaya. The reviews we read prior to leaving made us a bit nervous about two-hour check-in time and slow service.
Check in took us less than five minutes, and there were no issues.

Overall, we were very pleased with the resort. It was located across from Port Lucaya, and there were a number of restaurants and shops over there.

We ate in a number of places. Overall, the restaurants on the property were better than at the port. Avoid the Prop Club if you have kids. It was oriented toward college students and you would have to be completely drunk to think the food was good.

Iries was excellent - we ate there twice - they made special meals for our girls at no extra charge. The atmosphere was very nice, and the food was good and reasonable. Waves was a good pool bar to have a burger. It was at lighthouse point. China Beach was very good, except they served my wife's dinner after all of us were done eating. The Pub in the square had good calamari, and the Mexican place (Tiajuanas) was good except they had no clue how to make a margarita.

Bring coffee with you! There was a good espresso bar in the lobby of Breaker's Cay. Whatever you do, don't get a daquiri in the Port at the coconut stand. It was gross. It was Koolaid with rum from a milk jug.

We stayed in Breakers Cay and found it very nice. It was worth the money to upgrade from Reef Village. Lighthouse Point was the nicest place with the best pool - by far.

We went to the International Bazaar in Freeport once. It was a dump and a waste of time. When we go back, we will not go into Freeport at all or anywhere near it. The nicest part of the island was Port Lucaya and better yet, Our Lucaya. Your best bet would be not to leave at all.

The service and attitude of the staff we found to be good. Service was slow and relaxed. Get a Kalik (the local beer) and wait it out.

Beer was sold in Port Lucaya for $2 at the duty free. It was a very short walk. Bring a small cooler for by the pool (versus $4 at the pool).

When we were here, there was a brass band from England. They were a great bunch of kids. They played on the property a number of times.

Our room was kept very clean. We requested a fridge, and they brought one right up for the week. When we packed, we took a bag with a case of Guinness and a case of water. That was a good move. Don't think that the presence of a Winn Dixie is a benefit. It was a dump with $5 Oreos. Bring some snacks with you!

We would definitely return to Our Lucaya. It was a very nice, clean resort. There were nice people, okay food, and it was incredibly relaxing.

3.0 stars An excellent first-time Caribe family resort. Visited: June 2002

Fourteen of us went for a week just as school got out. I would recommend this resort to families who have never been to the Caribbean.

It was clean, and they provided good food. Use the meal plan if you plan to eat on premises. It was not cheap, but with 14 of us, it made life simple. Breakers Cay was very clean. The pools were excellent and easy to get a chaise almost anywhere. The beach was also clean, and snorkling was very good. I recommend Pat and Diane's $30 snorkel trip. It was fabulous for beginners.

Service was very good - if a bit slow. It's not easy to find qualified servers in the Bahamas. The food was of high quality.. no doubt about it. We were on the Rhapsody plan which included breakfast and dinner in any restaurant. It was nice for kids to order filet mignon and not cost you $60 a piece!

Drink prices were very reasonable - $4 for beers. Happy hour was ridiculously cheap. We had 6 margauritas, 3 kid colodas and with a 15% built in tip, it was $22! Go beat that! The drinks were outstanding.

One drawback was Ocean Motion, a vendor who handled the water sports and water trampoline, snorkel gear, boogie boards, was out of commission. Huh? Complain the first day and the resort will intervene. Other than that, this is a superb choice for first timers in the Caribbean.. go enjoy!

3.0 stars We enjoyed our stay at Our Lucaya despite a few flaws! Visited: March 2002
Posted by kathy_kn
I've read the other reviews, both great and bad, and can relate to all of them! But overall, this was a very nice place and - from what I understand - improving daily.

True, there was some construction and refurbishing going on, but it didn't interfere with our stay. We did feel that the food was pricey, but we had no complaints about those serving it.

Those of us from the New York area (and others) who are accustomed to fast and quick, must realize the temperment of the Bahamian people is different; it's an island! They are laid-back and seem to enjoy life. I will admit that it felt like it took forever to actually check into our room, but from that point on, the service was good.

Also, we stayed at Reef Village and we did not feel like low class! Breakers Cay was the newer of the three hotels and my understanding was that prior to Breakers Cay being built, Reef Village and Lighthouse Pointe were two separate hotels that weren't kept well. The new owner purchased all three properties, and Reef Village and Lighthouse Pointe are benefitting from all the improvements being added.

The pool areas were immaculate. The beaches were clean. There were always enough lounges (a problem we've had in past vacations....pool areas can get crowded and everyone scrambles for seats!). That was not the case at Our Lucaya.

All three hotels were completely booked and yet we never got the feel that the place was crowded. The tours offered were moderately priced and we enjoyed quite a few of them! One other reviewer said it well...and I'm sure this goes for just about anywhere....one person's paradise is another person's nightmare...just depends the level of service.

As for my group, we were quite happy with Our Lucaya and would definitely return.

I went with a group of 20-something young professionals around Spring-Break time, and was very impressed with the entire resort.

They were big enough to separate the Spring Breakers, families with kids and the young professionals without stepping on any toes. It seemed as if each group had their own hotel, pool and beach. You could choose to revel with the drunkards, who seemed to have a good time without pestering from the staff, or play with the kiddies, or not.

The food in Port Lucaya was horrible, but the resort food was very good. It was pricey, but no more so than the Port. The activities at the resort seemed no better than those in the Port, but were definitely more expensive. For just sitting at the beach or pool and the other basics, there was no need to leave the resort. It was very relaxing.

The only (small) problem was pool temperature, which seemed either frosty or steaming, depending on the pool. But overall, we all went home relaxed and happy.

I am surprised to read so many positive reviews here, because Our Lucaya was a huge disappointment. The rooms are adequate at best, the food is horribly mediocre and incredibly overpriced. The staff is laughable -- no one could answer a question and any kind of help was nonexistent.

Our kids enjoyed the pool and their dinners in the Camp Lucaya, but I was sorry it was not better staffed and the activities were not broken out for children by age. The staff seemed to take the path of least resistance, which usually involved a video, so we stopped going.

The bad attitude and staff incompetence seemed to be pervasive at all parts of this resort. I would not recommend this resort, and have no plans to return.
