2.0 stars Depends on what you're looking for... Visited: December 2001

Where to start? The thing with the Caribbean is that it can be hit and miss and the hotels aren't rated the way they might be in the USA. This can be misleading when booking. People's idea of "fantastic" differs depending on their travel experiences.

If you're a Four Seasons or even Hilton or Sheraton traveler, than Our Lucaya is a disappointment. Breakers Cay is the nicest of the three hotels on the property and I can't attest to the staff there but I can for the Reef Village. Like everyone else, I would complain that the staff is slow, uncaring and rarely capable of follow through. Everything we asked was not accommodated, with the exception of demanding to the manager, a room change.

The $200 per night rooms were horrible in my opinion (Motel 6), but I like to travel (in the Caribbean) in the nice hotels or else quaint, clean B and B's. Service is key for me. Once changed, the newer room (still in Reef Village) was fine, more updated but still with an old style bathroom. Maid service was okay.

I agree with others that the food is mediocre but I didn't try the the nice restaurant in Breaker's Cay because it was ridiculously priced (8.00 for a side potato, in addition to your 45.00 steak). The nice things are the pool areas, the beach is pretty nice, the grounds are well kept and manicured. There are eating areas serving okay food at the bars.

The thing with this place is that they want to be a five-star hotel but just aren't even close. They are a three-star place at best. No room service, unfriendly, unhelpful, indifferent and bored staff. BUT, having said that, if you go in there, knowing you'll have an okay room and planning on eating out and spending quite a bit for it, then it's okay. Ferryman's by the Port, Pisces and the Italian joint next to the marina are all good. The English pub is pretty poor as is Callie's the Greek Restaurant. Try Zorbas, it's better. That's all I had time to try there.

We did do the Paradise Cove snorkel trip and found it worthwhile with good stuff to see. I've traveled all over Europe; lived in Greece and Turkey for two summers, spent a few vacations on the Cote d'Azur, been to Hawaii, other Caribbean destinations, Mexico, the S. Pacific and Thailand. I only say this because I have seen my share of hotels, good and bad, and want to make clear that Our Lucaya will be great for some people and a disappointment for others. It really depends on how you approach your vacationing and what you're looking for.

5.0 stars This is the place to stay in Grand Bahama. Visited: December 2001

I was impressed with Our Lucaya. The property is well kept and the staff is very friendly. My fiancé and I stayed 3 nights in Breakers Cay. Breakers Cay is the newest of the three buildings. It is right in the center of all the action. Four days was definitely not enough. Our Lucaya is right across the street from the Port Lucaya. Make sure you check out the restaurants inside Port Lucaya. The food was excellent. I highly recommend Our Lucaya to anyone who wants to relax and soak up the sun. Our Lucaya is worth visiting when construction is finished on the casino.

4.0 stars The best on the Island! Visited: November 2001
Posted by deb_ingersoll2000
We traveled mid November on Discovery cruise package to Our Lucaya. It was great! I have been going to the Grand Bahamas for the past 15 years and this property is going to set a new standard on the Island. It is new and with this you have to understand things may not run smoothly all of the time. Check-in took too long; I had a meeting to get to and the staff took longer than expected in getting our things to the room.

Our room was made up and cleaned great while we were out diving or sightseeing. The towels were replaced, which is nice when you shower after being in the ocean twice daily!

The staff was great—having our car out front with just a call down! The place was big with lots of room for walking around. The grounds were great—neat and clean! It was first class!

The pools were clean and well kept with floating rafts to lounge the day away if you like, and lots of chase lounge chairs to rest or tan on, not to mention umbrellas for the non-sun type, unlike some hotels we have been at!

They have done this place with kids in mind (if you bring them along)! There were lifeguards at the pools and ocean, as well as Camp Lucaya—a daycare for the small ones with a small pool area and secure grounds with fence. Plus, daily things to do!

We will be going back to the Our Lucaya soon to relax! The place is outstanding! You will enjoy the stay; this is not just Nassau, Paradise Island, it is “Reef-freshing,” pardon the pun!

3.0 stars Very Nice Visited: August 2001
Posted by dennis_cabarle
My wife and a few friends visited Our Lucaya over Labor Day weekend.

Pros:
1. Lighthouse point was very nice and well kept.
2. Activities around the resort were very nice and there was always something to do for a very reasonable price.
3. Pool area is clean and well kept.
4. No sign of "JAWS" anywhere.
5. Food outside of the resort was reasonably priced and surprisingly, good!
6. Some of the staff was friendly.
7. Nightlife is good at the resort.

Cons:
1. Service was slow (These people walk as if they have lead in their shoes).
2. Bar was not stocked at all times.
3. Some of the people were not very friendly.
4. Prices for restaurants at the resort were a bit pricey ($40.00 average per person at any given place, but we were able to find 1 place that offered a $26.00 per person buffet.)
5. The rooms were air-conditioned but extremely humid at the same time, which made sleeping on a damp bed a bit difficult.
6. If you want a drink from the in-room bar, make sure you really want it because if you move it (yes, move it), you will be charged.
7. My wife and I were given 2 full-sized beds rather than 1 queen- or king-sized bed.
8. The casino was not finished yet and the casino we visited at another resort was pathetic. The tables were so old and decrepit, they were literally falling apart, no exaggeration here.

All in all, it was an extremely nice place, and although the staff at Our Lucaya was not very attentive to the guests, I would definitely return. We had a great time. I would rate this resort 3 1/2 stars. If the staff were friendly and attentive, I would give it 4 1/2 stars.

I highly recommend the Dolphin Swim and the friends we went with gave the Shark Feeding dinner two thumbs up.

2.0 stars Extremely dissapointed! Visited: July 2001

My husband and I spent way too much money for very little at Our Lucaya. First of all, once we left the smelly hot, dirty airport and made it to the "manor house" at Our Lucaya.. we thought there was hope. The main house was nice and we thought we would be relaxing in a lovely room in no time... however...
we waited to check in for 1/2 hr, when we were finally tended to, we were told there was no reservation on file for us! We were sent to "reef village"... the low-class, NO class resort area. We were actually told by a resort cabby that reef village was for the people with "no class" and that's because "that's where they belong".

Reef village was, by far, the WORST. It was dirty, unkempt and seedy. The lobby was a smoke filled haven of cigarette smoke and screaming children. The all inclusive was supposed to include 6 restaurants, but only three were open and only two were open for lunch. The two that were available were awful. If you like waiting an hour for a hamburger or hotdog (yes, that's it for lunch folks!) then it's the place for you.

The staff was sporadically nice, and was a little better when we moved to breaker's cay. It cost more money but the room was at least cleaner and had a view. We used the spa twice, it was mediocre at BEST. The shopping was also lousy, and the area just outside the resort is unseemly.

I would definitely NOT recommend Our Lucaya for the person who likes a clean, well maintained, high class resort.

5.0 stars A must see! Visited: May 2001

Our Lucaya was a beautiful resort--3 great pools and a wonderful property. Although it is very breathtaking, the highlight is the gracious staff. Bellmen, wait staff, managers, housekeepers, etc. all greet you with smiles and hellos, and go out of their way to accommodate you. The staff is so friendly with the children and even walk around singing. I think the rooms in Breaker's Cay are the best and would recommend them to everyone. I'll definitely be back.

5.0 stars The best resort in the Bahamas Visited: April 2001

We have been to many resorts in the Bahamas over the years and this surpassed all other places we’ve stayed. The room at Reef Village was very nice, as was the staff dining beach and everything else. We would come back in a heartbeat. The Bahamian people have one speed: smooth. So don't gripe, be happy.

5.0 stars We found paradise at Our Lucayan! Visited: February 2001

Please don't waste your money going anywhere else when you can go to Our Lucayan! It is absolutely beautiful! We did the 3-day, 2-night all-inclusive package and it was perfect. Excellent food and all you can drink 24 hours a day. The staff was so friendly and they can't do enough to make you happy. Everybody was so happy and the staff was singing to the music that was piped throughout the pool/beach area. It made it a real party atmosphere. The beach is beautiful and so clean. I can not say enough about this resort. We are going back again next year and this time we will stay a lot longer!

1.0 stars It was an absolute disappointment! Visited: February 2001

This was the worst trip to the Caribbean my husband and I have ever taken. Reef Village was under staffed, and the all-inclusive package changed everyday. We spoke to the hotel manager and he said unfortunately there was nothing he could do. Waiting 25-35 minutes for a drink at the bar is a little long, but then again there was only one bartender on staff at one time. The other person was stocking the bar when it should have been done before.

I would not recommend Our Lucaya Reef Village!

5.0 stars Our Lucaya exceeded expectations Visited: January 2001

We just returned from Our Lucaya Reef Village. The Our Lucaya Resort consisting of the Reef Village (all-inclusive), Lighthouse Point, and Breakers Cay exceeded our expectations. Pleasant, courteous staff - a rarity in the Caribbean. Many restaurants to choose from - all excellent. Three swimming pools that went on forever - all breathtaking.

We went with our 4-year-old who enjoyed the well-run day camp. Great beach. Eager staff ready to get you a chair. Plenty of chairs and plush towels available (another rarity).

The only slight negative in the whole experience was our room at the Reef Village. The furniture was a bit tired and the bathrooms needed restoration. Rumour has it that Reef Village hotel rooms are due for refurbishing once Lighthouse Point is complete. However, the rooms were clean and were cleaned extensively daily. Lighthouse Point and Breakers Cay are new and stunning. But don't get me wrong - Reef Village was stunning in its decor as well.

I highly recommend Our Lucaya for families. Children were plentiful and enjoyed the facilities. Serving staff in the restaurants were quite accommodating to children. Babysitters were available and quite good. I could go on and on - this was the first time we have been to an island and we were completely satisfied with this resort.

1.0 stars A long, long way from luxury--don't be fooled. Visited: July 2000

This resort is claiming to be 5-star. I have stayed at 5- and 6-star resorts before and this one falls way, way short; it is laughable. This place is not very expensive and if you don't have to deal with a single person on the staff and you could spend 6 days going from your room to the beach/pool then off premises for food and drink, you might do all right.

We thought the staff was rude, uncaring, incompetent, aloof. We had the highest room category available, which was supposed to have an "oceanview" but did not. Try a huge palm tree/beach-restaurant view! Also, we called about the air-conditioning not working and after 3 failed attempts to fix it over the first 4 days, they gave up and we were left to deal with it! We were supposed to have a fridge in the room and they told us that they were all broken and indeed they were lining one of the hallways, so I assume nobody had one.

The weather was gorgeous and the pool was impressive, but don't ask the staff to lift a finger. Do not even consider the all-inclusive package here; it’s a huge waste of money. A public taxi into town is $1 each way and there are lots of restaurants there and some good ones, too!

My wife and I were just looking for a quick, cheap getaway in the sun and we got that by avoiding everything at the Lucaya except for our bed and the pool. The beach was moderate, with lots of seaweed and not very manicured.

If you get a steal of a deal on a trip to the Lucaya, grab it, but don’t expect the resort vacation of a lifetime – you won’t find it here.

First, be sure not to mix-up Our Lucaya with Port Lucaya or Lucayan.

Our Lucaya is a wonderful resort. The staff was great. They were very friendly and helpful.

The food was good and the resort was out of this world. When I was there, they were still heavily under construction. It didn't matter though. The beach was nice and the pool was great.

I plan to go back, if not every year, then every other year.
