The Barbados Game Fishing Association(BGFA), is responsible for all game fishing events in Barbados and has firmly established itself as one of the premier Associations or Clubs in the Eastern Caribbean. We have played a leading role in encouraging other fishing associations in the region and, today, we have an active and enjoyable relationship with our contemporaries in Trinidad & Tobago, Grenada, St. Lucia, Martinique, Antigua and, most recently, Dominica, St. Vincent and Guadeloupe. The scene is completed by the presence of tall palm trees that add to the peaceful and relaxing atmosphere of the bay. Always a popular picnic spot, it is also becoming a popular place to live and a number of homes are being built on the tops of the cliffs overlooking the beach and ocean. People who live there report spotting turtles and whales in the waters below the rocks. The white sandy beach is the perfect place to catch the rays of the sun. There is not much shade at the beach so be sure to bring your sunscreen if you wish to avoid a tan. No beach chairs are available for rent so also carry along a towel or two. Brownes Beach overlooks the lovely Carlisle Bay which is often dotted with small boats and catamarans. But it's what's beneath the surface that's really interesting! The bay is home to many shipwrecks which in turn are home to tropical fish, frog fish, seahorses and more! Towards the northern end of the beach are shallow reefs where snorkelers can spot colorful tropical fish and other marine life. Lasting for approximately 5 weeks, and commencing in July, Crop Over is a Barbadian festival celebrating the end of the local sugar cane crop harvest - hence it's name. A summer street carnival, filled with people consumed with "festival fever", dancing to Caribbean soca music and wearing spectacular, multicolored costumes and body paint. It's the climax of the Crop Over festival - "sweet fuh days" - in Barbados. Color, culture and heritage (tuk bands, land ship, stilt-walkers), music (calypso, tuk, ring bang and steelpan), alcohol (locally brewed beer and rum) along with energy, friendly spirited people and fantastic summer weather, are all combined to create the Caribbean's ultimate festival -"more than a carnival, sweet fuh days". Crop Over was resurrected in 1974 from a multi-decade hibernation that began in the 1940's due to hardships of the time and the world war. Since then, it has grown steadily into the island's premiere event, attracting thousands of new and repeat visitors annually. The cultural diversity of the island is showcased throughout the festival through exhibitions, concerts, street markets, parades and of course mega dust-to-dawn parties (also referred to as fetes or bashments). The name really says it all - here you will find calm crystal clear waters that are perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The occasional fishing boat and jet ski pass by, with the catamarans heading down the west coast further out to sea. To the south is the Harbour and you can watch as the cruise liners make their way in and out. The northern part of the beach is almost always quiet while to the south you will find more activity as you approach the Malibu Beach Club and Visitor Centre. We were met by Peter, just outside the gates to the pier. The orchid farm was lovely, we really enjoyed talkingwith some of the gardeners and getting additional information about the orchids. The general tour of the island was very informative, with a visit to the church and Bathsheba. Lunch was very good- a choice of grilled chicken or fish with salad and macaroni and cheese. Now the fun part- we got to the wildlife preserve just in time for the heavens to open. Armed with large, golf-sized umbrellas, we had to pick our way over groups of fairly large land tortoises creating roadblocks on the paths. We got to see deer roaming freely in the woods, and had a conversation with a large blue parrot seeking shelter from the storm, who dismissed us with a "bye-bye" when it apparently got tired of talking. But, the highlight was snorkeling with the sea turtles. Apparently the deluge was confined to the north side of the island, so the weather was good for the snorkeling. We took a glass bottom boat to where the turtles were, and happily snorkeled among 5 or 6 of them that immediately appeared when the boat pilot started feeding them. Following that, we moved on to an area with a sunken wreck, and were able to snorkel among literally thousands of fish swirling around the wreck. I would highly recommend this tour." happy customer. The very popular Cunard Paradise Hotel sat on the shores of this west coast beach and in the early 1980's the beach was a haven of activity as guests enjoyed swims in the tranquil waters, horse rides along the beach, and numerous watersports activities. The hotel is now closed. As a result the beach is now much quieter with the occasional jet ski and fishing boats passing by. Around the corner from Paradise beach you will find Freshwater Bay and a small fishing village. A wonderful place for swimming, the area also has some shallow rock formations which may be of interest to the snorkeler. St Nicholas Abbey, Cherry Tree Hill, St Peter, is a very handsome Jacobean great house built around 1658, which with Drax Hall (a private house also in Barbados) is one of the only three surviving Jacobean mansions in the western hemisphere, the third being in Virginia, USA. The house and surrounding buildings, including an 1890 steam mill, have recently undergone extensive renovations by owner, architect Larry Warren, who purchased the property in 2006. In the stables is a display of sugar in all its aspects, fancy brown sugar, molasses and barrels in which the special blended St Nicholas Abbey rums are aged. A video of a black and white home movie shot in 1935 by the previous owners is available for viewing. Opening hours are 10 am to 3.30 pm Monday to Friday. (close)

Zed Layson was born and raised on the island of Barbados-- he is 5th generation Barbadian. Zed began surfing at the age of 7 and has traveled the world as a competitive surfer for more than 24 years. In 1990, Zed competed in the World Surfing Championships in Japan, and also competed in the 1994 World Surfing Championships in Brazil. Zed placed 17th out of 120, ranking him in the top 20 Amateurs in the world.
