4.0 stars What a Find! Visited: January 2007

Villa Marie Guesthouse is off the beaten path, and offers a relaxing atmosphere. Okay, so there's no pool, no beach front, or restaurant on site. If you want that kind of place, Villa Marie guest house is not for you!

Peter was great, and be sure to ask him about the air conditioning. It's an extra small charge, but well worth it.

The apartment was clean, spacious, and the kitchen....oh man what a treat! It had all the appliances from home, and it was clean, clean, clean!

Of all the places we have stayed, Villa Marie was the nicest, and guess what? Also, it was the most price worthy! We would definitely go back...in a heartbeat.

The beach was less than three minutes away, as was the grocery store (inexpensive food, same price for everybody!), and a few good eateries nearby. We spent a few meals at O' Cristel's. They provided great service, with a nice, laid back attitude.

There was great snorkeling, and to walk the beach was great, too. You do have to criss cross to the road and back down to the beach, though. Try it, you'll like it!

4.0 stars This is the ideal choice for the independent traveler. Visited: April 2005

We thought long and hard about whether to stay in one of the many resort hotels, or go independent at an apartment. I'm delighted to say that we made the right choice by chosing to stay at Villa Marie.

We had two and a half care-free weeks as a guest of the delightfully laid-back Peter, who proved to be the perfect host - there when we needed him, and unobtrusive at all other times.

The apartments, kitchens and rooms here were well-appointed, kept immaculately clean, and were well situated for the glorious west coast beaches. Either take a two-minute walk to the nearest beach, catch the "reggae bus", or drive to one of the beaches within ten or twenty minutes. There was also a good supermarket nearby for provisions.

Peter was well-connected locally, and could arrange tours, hire cars, restaurant tables, etc. for us. You'll also find that he can get better prices for you, too.

If there was a drawback, it was the absence of a swimming pool. But the beach was only two minutes away. And many of the hotels allowed other guests the use of their pools if they bought drinks from their bar. So it was a minor point.

The Villa Marie gets my personal recommendation, and I shall definitely return.

It has all been said about this property. Not much more can be added. But try it for yourself. No one could possibly be disappointed by a stay here.

3.0 stars A good accommodation at good value in the west of Barbados. Visited: August 2003

We had a lovely time and met some really nice people. This was a good accommodation in the west at a good price. There were lots of lovely beaches nearby, especially Paradise Beach.

The owner was very friendly, and happy to provide details of where to eat. Do try 'Groots' in Hole town for food, it was excellent.

There was a lovely relaxed atmosphere here. I would definitely stay here again.

4.0 stars My second stay was just as pleasant as the first! Visited: August 2003

When the ocassion arose to visit Barbados shortly after my first trip in May 2003, I did not hesitate to book a single room at Villa Marie.

First of all, Villa Marie is the best bargain on the West Coast if you prefer smaller, more intimate surroundings. My single room was just as comfortable as the apartment I had rented previously. And I especially liked using the spacious, well-maintained kitchen.

Having access to a nearby beach and good public transportation made my stay at Villa Marie Guesthouse all the more enjoyable.

When I visited Barbados last April, I stayed at Villa Marie. The service was great. It was like having a home in Barbados, no pressure, just the quietness and the sun. It was also near one of the best beaches around.

This is the perfect setting for enjoying your visit in the south.

4.0 stars We made the perfect choice! Visited: April 2003

My traveling companion and I decided to rent the "white" apartment during our week-long stay in Barbados--we were quite satisfied.

We were pleased with the spaciousness of the apartment and, as a bonus, there was a veranda/deck on which my roommate enjoyed her mornings. Needless to say, the facilities were just what we expected from the website--clean and well-maintained, and we especially appreciated the friendly conversations we had with Peter and Lucene.

Personally, I cannot complain about the noise from the chickens and barking dogs because I "hung out 'til the wee hours" and was glad to hit the bed upon my arrival back at Villa Marie. The location was away from the action of the island, but we were able to take the bus to most places we needed to reach.

If I had not purchased a timeshare, I would most definitely stay at the Villa Marie Guesthouse again. However, I know that Peter and Lucene will make me feel like a welcomed visitor whenever I come to Barbados.

3.0 stars This is your home away from home. Visited: November 2002

At first, I was a bit uncertain about choosing an accommodation over the internet. I was searching every day for a place where I could feel at home, and somewhere I could get rest.

I was glad when I chose the Villa Marie. From the time I saw the website on the internet, I knew I was going to feel comfortable and right at home. I even comfirmed this with Peter. He said he was sure I would. Well Peter - you were right.

The Villa Marie was the perfect spot for a peaceful, quiet atmosphere where you can be one with yourself, relax and let go of the stresses of the outside world. I was here for a weekend, and I thought it was magic.

I was visiting with my boyfriend the weekend of his birthday, and for the first time in our lives, we went three days without arguing. I am thanking the Villa Marie for its magic, its peaceful environment, and its grace. I have decided to make this my home away from home for the rest of my life.

I especially loved the tropical garden with its cleanliness and the smell of fresh fruits. Also, the housekeeping department - especially Sherryann - was very polite.

But, my favorite aspect of my stay was the Guesthouse' dog who greeted us on arrival night. He was very friendly. I miss him.
Peter, thank you for a wonderful stay. I hope to see you again soon. And say hello to the guard dog for me!

5.0 stars We can’t wait for our next visit! Visited: August 2002

We found Villa Marie by chance a few years ago, and have been returning regularly ever since. We try to visit Barbados twice a year and Villa Marie is always a welcome place to ‘come home’ to.

Its seclusion from the main road and hotels on the west coast is a valuable bonus and you don’t have to go far to find plenty to do. Although there is plenty of action on the south coast, the west coast offers a more peaceful stay and if it’s action you want, nothing is very far away as the island is only 21 miles by 14 miles, and the bus service is very good. It’s good to escape the hustle and bustle, but it’s close at hand if you want it.

We have stayed in many types of accommodations and there is always noise at night from animals, especially if you are staying in a house in a village as opposed to a large resort hotel and, like the tree frogs, you don’t hear it after a while.

The house itself is clean, well maintained and very well equipped. The large kitchen is shared by all but two of the rooms and is a place where you’ll probably bump into the other guests and get chatting. Many an hour has been passed sitting on the patio reading, chatting or just simply chilling out, but beware, once you get comfortable on that patio it’s hard to move!

If you are unfamiliar with the island, the manager, Peter, is a very good source of local information and can offer expert advice and guidance. Peter is an excellent host.

Villa Marie is certainly our ‘home from home’. We are always made to feel very welcome and because there are so few rooms it sometimes feels as if it is our very own home, albeit only for a couple of weeks at a time.

4.0 stars Everything we expected and more! Visited: March 2001

The first review that was made of the Guesthouse says about everything there is to know about it. But I wanted to take this time to express how much I loved staying there.

Yes, there are barking dogs and the mattress is a little bit too hard for me, but the place is just enchanting! We were 4 (1 couple + 2 guys) young people (25-30) and it was just perfect. For sure, it's not close to the south where everything happens, but we liked it so much at the Guesthouse that we stayed there, hanging out in the garden for four nights!

The beach is beautiful and about 500 meters from the house. The fact that you are not surrounded by hotels gives you such a great feeling! You can really experience Barbados. Plus, Peter, the owner, is just amazing to give advice about what to do; he's the best guide for sure!

In the end, we really hope to go back to Barbados one day and we'll go back to Villa Marie for sure!

4.0 stars A beautiful, clean, affordable guest house. Visited: March 2001
Posted by greeneye
I just returned from my first trip to Barbados. We chose to stay at Villa Marie because it
seemed like one of the only affordable options in Barbados that also looked like a nice
place to stay; fortunately that was true.

Villa Marie is a European style guest house located on the West Coast of Barbados - in
Fitts Village, St. James. It is enclosed by a tropical garden, with mango and golden apple
trees all around. It is separated from the main road in Fitts Village by a gravel road and is
fenced in, apart from other properties in the area. We felt that the property was safe and
secure, but also gave us an opportunity to experience some local flavor as it's in a
residential area. We stayed in one of the large double rooms on the ground floor.

The staff at Villa Marie is friendly and accommodating. Peter, the manager of the guest
house, made arrangements for us to go on a catamaran ride with Tiami cruises which we
highly recommend.

The kitchen is large, clean and spacious. We were able to purchase groceries at Jordan's
Supermarket down the street and keep them in the kitchen, which cut down on our meal
costs significantly. In the evenings we enjoyed rum and coke on the porch with the other
guests, which was one of the nicest parts of the trip.

There are many beautiful beaches within a short distance of Villa Marie. One particularly
nice one was Mullins Beach, which is a short bus ride from the guest house. Also, Payne's
Bay and Gibbs Bay Beaches are close by, and are all well worth exploring.

There are only a few drawbacks to staying at Villa Marie. It is far from the South Coast of
Barbados, where much of the action takes place on the island. Also, the foam mattresses
were a bit uncomfortable in our room. Additionally, we were woken up at night by some
barking dogs in the neighborhood, which was a little annoying. However, we considered
these minor drawbacks.

Villa Marie is a very pleasant place, and well worth the money. I would recommend it
highly for young people who want to experience Barbados on a budget, who aren't
interested in staying in an all-inclusive resort and enjoy meeting other people from around
the world. We would definitely return to stay at Villa Marie in the future.
