Nice but not again Visited: May 2008

My husband and I stayed here for 3 weeks and although it is a nice setting, found the housekeeping was very lax. Some days we did not get a maid and although we do not mind making our own beds, it is difficult to use damp, dirty towels several times to shower with. We paid alot extra to have a one bed appartment but we feel this is a rip off. We enjoy making the occasional meal and trying the local produce but it was difficult to do so through the lack of equipment. It was stated that it was a fully equipt kitchen but we have had better on a camping holiday, honestly. Going back to the housekeeping bit, the ladies spent most of their time gossiping on the stairs and not moving very far. When asked for anything we would get a scowl and a what? reply not very Bajan at all. THe porters and reception staff were lovely and made us feel welcome but Oh dear, the only time the maids seemed a bit interested was when we were about to leave and suddenly they were around like bees to a honey pot for the tips. Yes, of course we tipped, we were too scared not to. Do we stay again? No. We stay often in Barbados and know this is not the usual service we get.

What a lovely place to stay! Visited: August 2007

I was at this hotel for two weeks 22/08- 05/08 2007. I got married at the resort, and could not have asked for any better service at this hotel.

The staff was lovely and friendly, always smiling and happy. I do not know what these other reviews are about as I don't have anything bad to say about the service or accomodations here. The room was lovely and clean.

I will certainly be coming back here in the future.

I stayed here for a total of three nights, and was not totally pleased.

The room needed to be exterminated for mosquitos. I believe it occured when they cleaned the rooms and left the doors wide open for flies, mosquitos, and other insects.

I thought it was awful. Visited: December 2005

This hotel was probably the worst hotel I have stayed in. Believe me - I travel to third world countries and find far better standards of service and accommodation for one-third of the price this hotel charged.

I found check-in to be a joke, I was kept waiting 55 minutes after a two-hour drive, a three-hour airport check-in, and a nine-hour flight.

My sanity almost disappeared when I saw the state of my room. I've experianced better plumbing and a/c in Nigeria.

This hotel would probably suffice if it was in North Korea. I will never stay at this hotel again.

Dramedy of Errors Visited: July 2005

In January, my husband and I booked our vacation to stay at the Casurina Beach Club. It was sold and our reservation was placed with the Amaryllis. I was told that this hotel was a few steps up in class from the Casurina. I guess the Casurina was a REAL dive because the Amaryllis was just run of the mill.

When we first checked into the room, I was horrified. The room we originally reserved was supposed to be a studio with kitchen. What we got was a first floor small box with no; shower curtain and rod, bathroom window curtain (the gardner waived at me in the morning - he was on the OUTSIDE!) and a ton of mosquitos.

We immediately asked for a change of room, but none were available at that time. They asked us to wait until the morning. I returned to the room to sleep. When we turned down the bed we discovered STAINED SHEETS! I was so repulsed that I slept in the chair. Their housekeeping is less than substandard, they just couldn't get it right. When towels were changed, no washcloths were left. If washcloths were replaced, old towels were taken, but not replaced. Toilet tissue was at a premium because we always had to ask for it. Although the bed was made daily, the sheets were not changed as evidenced that first night.

The best part about the facility is the beach. There are ample chairs to use, and the area was kept as clean as it could be. The disappointment was that there is no staff available to take your order for food or drink while on the beach. You have to get up and go either inside or to the end of the beach to place an order yourself. We did see staff, but they did not make themselves available for this type of service.

Since the resort is located in an area that does not have local establishments within walking distance, it needs to do more to entertain its guests. Everything closed up by 10 PM. If you're lucky, maybe you can get a mixed drink up till 11. Most travelers come from places that stay open until 2 AM. They should at least stay open until midnight - that'a a compromise. The touted cable TV only had 4-5 channels. When one thinks of cable, one thinks of 100+ channels

We managed to get the studio room we reserved in January and things began to get better. The hotel itself is not a paradise, but the front desk and kitchen staff were extremely courteous and helpful.

All in all, if you're looking to just plain relax and don't care about ambiance, then the Amaryllis is for you.

This was a paradise lost. Visited: December 2004

The Amaryllis deserved to be included among one of the greatest missed opportunities in the Caribbean. Located on an island paradise, it sported a prime location with both a lovely beach and attractive grounds.

Upon arriving at this resort hotel, our first impression was that it deserved the four-star rating that it boasted. However, once we got a glimpse beneath its picturesque veneer by entering our room and then by experiencing the level of service the establishment had to offer, we came away with a deep sense of disappointment that bordered on a feeling of being violated somehow.

Check-in was simply bizarre, and was the first shot across our bow. After a 40-minute wait while I observed pairs of disgruntled guests simultaneously struggle with canceled bookings and room downgrades (apparently common here), we were finally checked in and entered our room.

Now, I am very easy to please, but our room at the Amaryllis could best be described as mediocre. As for the bathroom, it would only be rated four stars if you had just gotten out of prison. By any definition it would be considered spartan; unless, of course, you consider toilet tissue that one might find in a Afghan truck-stop desirable, an utter lack basic toiletries charming, or you covet a primitive tub/shower unit that failed to offer such things as hot water and pressure.

I could go on, but suffice to say that our room offered little more than a harbinger of what to expect from our stay at this "resort".

The food served at the Amaryllis was unimpressive and played hard-to-get. At the Amaryllis, service came in two flavors: non-existent and poor; its ill-trained and apathetic wait staff maintained very low standards and consistently failed to meet them at every turn. The service was so bad that it became a source of much laughter among the guests as we became resigned to the ineptitude of our hosts.

I felt empathy toward those poor souls who had booked an all-inclusive holiday at the Amaryllis (which we thankfully did not). I surmised that such bookings were what left the beach bar closed at 6:00 pm and the other hotel restaurants closed by 9:30 pm. Was this some attempt by the hotel to curtail the use of those facilities by their all-inclusive guests? Whatever the motive, the policy left the Amaryllis like a graveyard by 10:00 pm and a pathetic dark spot in the lively and exhilarating Barbadian night that surrounded it.

By my estimation, the Amaryllis is a resort of great potential, most of which goes unfulfilled. At the end of the day it is a paradise lost due to the inattention of its ownership and/or management. It is a resort that has earned the prefix “last” in my book.

Well done, Amaryllis! Visited: November 2004
Posted by john9
I just returned today after spending one week at Amaryllis Beach Resort. I found the hotel to be a very good value for the money.

The spacious rooms (garden view) included a kitchenette - fridge, microwave, sink and cooker, plus table and four chairs. The rooms were cleaned daily with change of linen and towels.

Also, the food was very good and varied daily. The staff was very helpful, especially the receptionists who were always very busy (well done, Suzanne).

They had a very nice and private beach -not troubled by hawkers. In addition, the hotel offered meal packages - the seven breakfast and three evening meals worked out very well (I would recommend).

To sum up, it was excellent, friendly and a very good value for the money. I would recommend the Amaryllis to anyone.

We booked our holiday in September through V----n to go to Amaryllis Beach Resort on an all inclusive basis. Our experience was far from happy, although the weather was very good and the beach location was perfect. The Amaryllis Beach Resort is advertised as a 4 star hotel. In our opinion it is struggling to achieve 2 stars. The facilities, quality of service and quality of food were all very poor. The entertainment was practically non existent and there was no kids club. The most popular activity, judging by attendance, was the filling in of complaints forms. To make matters even worse the limited resources offered by the hotel were not shared equally amongst hotel guests. We witnessed that the guests of an Italian tour operator were getting preferential treatment over the other guests. This included the best seating positions in the restaurant, the best service, a separate supply of beach towels and the preferred positions on the beach offering natural shade. There were at least 4 representatives from this tour operator who had effectively taken partial control of this hotel to ensure that their guests were well looked after to the detriment of other guests. We were made to feel so unwelcome that we resolved to leave the all inclusive scheme and distance ourselves from the hotel as far as possible. The all inclusive didn't mean all inclusive for the 39 steps restaurant and the Pizzaz restaurant. It was limited to one use only and up to a value of $42 per person at the 39 steps restaurant. We do however recommend The 39 steps restaurant which although included as part of the hotel complex is independently run and offers good food and live Jazz music on Saturday night. It proved to be our sanctuary from the frustrations of eating at The Almond Tree restaurant.Other things you would not expect to encounter at a proper 4 star hotel included, a noticeable shortage of staff, absence of ceiling fans in the Main (Almond Tree) restaurant, missing fixtures and fittings from rooms, shortage of beach towels and no parasols provided on the beach - hence the importance of finding natural shade. We don t consider ourselves to be natural born complainers and normally we try to enjoy all our holidays even though there may be certain problems or deficiencies. The extent and severity of the problems we encountered at The Amaryllis Beach however made it impossible to enjoy this holiday and the attitude of the hotel toward its non Italian speaking guests was nothing short of disgraceful.

Poor standard hotel Visited: December 2003

we booked this holiday in April, originally to return to Club Rockley which we loved. Our tour company
told us that Rockley was shut due to renovation work (according to everyone on island, it went into receivership). So looking forward to Christmas 2003 in Barbados we trusted that the upgrade to four star would be lovely and as good. On arrival and having seen our one bedsuite we were quite happy, nice size rooms, tv in each room , good computerised safe and a/c. We checked out the "garden view" it was all mud, manholecovers, diggers bleeping and construction of what we found out later to be the "kids club" going up.We were also on the fourth floor, eight flights of steps with two young children. We had booked all inclusive, where Watersports were free, not for the first 10 days anyway, due to a liability dispute. Even last four days the pedal boats were still not available to us. The first week the hotel had a grand total of 22 beach towels for all. NO CHILDRENS CLUB enforce yet!! Even though mentioned in our brochure and on the hotel website, talking to other staff will not be ready till feb. NO CHILDRENS CHRISTMAS PARTY as promised, however the visit from Santa was very good, and saved our day. There were NO FIRE EXTINGUSHERS on the top three levels only on ground floor and only possible means of escape whould be to jump four floors. Tiles on the stair case had chunks out of them and we found that the main pool tiles were very slippery, wire hanging out in main dining room were celing fans should be. Food and entertainment very poor. Most days food never had covers on, so the flies had first pickings. The choice available was not as great as Club Rockleys and the food was always just warm or cold, we can not recall having a good hot tasty meal. The lunch from the beach bar was okay for the first week but after this, even then the children refused to eat. One day we waited 55mins for a Tuna Sub for our daughter and after an hours wait for her ice-cream, we told the waiteress to cancel the desert order, her reply was "so you don't want it now then ".It appared that everything was on a budget and they were keeping their costs down to bare minimum. No wonder the owner had a big grin on his face. We used to try and get a table near to him in the resturants , it would guarantee us at least better service, while his staff knew they were being watched !. The weather was fantastic, the beaches lovely and the sea great, this is natures doing though, hotel or holiday company having no say in it. Big waste of money, stay somewhere else.

We had a wonderful experience in Barbados. Visited: November 2003

We stayed at the Amaryllis Beach Resort (formerly the Asta Beach Hotel) from Nov. 10/03 to Nov. 17/03.

The trip from the airport to the Amaryllis took about 15 minutes. The drivers were nuts in Barbados! This short trip to the resort convinced me that we were not going to be renting a car while we were on the island.

This resort has had millions of dollars of work done to it recently, so everything was still very fresh and clean. Check in was very quick. The porter took us to our room and we were pleasantly surprised to find that we were given a one-bedroom suite with a partial ocean view.

The beach was very beautiful. There was some shade available. They also had very nice new loungers available for the guests.
The pool was very small and clean. We didn’t use it, but we saw a few people lounging around.

The food in general was very good. We were glad that we booked all-inclusive because it was expensive. There was a supplement on some liqueurs. Pina Colados were very good at the Beach Bar.

This resort was nice enough…we wouldn’t say it was the nicest - but nice enough! We think in about two years the resort will be working very smoothly and everything will be really great. We would go back to the Amaryllis.

This was our third trip this year, having traveled to Jamaica in May and St. Martin in August. We think of all our seven vacations together (Mayan Riviera, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Panama, Jamaica, St. Martin and now Barbados). We would have to say St. Martin was our favorite, but Barbados was second. We loved it!

We called Barbados "paradise" many times during our stay. The people were friendly at the resort and in general. Shopping was okay. The food was very good. The beach was wonderful. Overall, we would say that the whole experience was positive and we will return to Barbados!

It was very nice for the price. Visited: January 2003

We have only one regret about choosing Asta...we didn't go for the all-inclusive package.

We got a room that had a kitchenette, figuring that we would fix meals for ourselves instead of eating out. That didn't work as planned. The only thing we used was the small fridge.

Also, there weren't a lot of things to do other than through the hotel within easy walking distance.

It was a good choice for the money, but if we were to stay here again, we would definitely go for the all-inclusive meal plan.

Asta Beach offers a nice value and a beautiful beach. Visited: May 2002
Posted by ukjules
My fiance and I visited Barbados for the first time this year, and we chose Asta Beach Resort because we wanted a no-frills beachfront location.

Asta was a clean, friendly hotel with an amazing beach. Rooms were comparable to a Holiday Inn, for amenities vs. price.
The location - South Coast - meant Asta was close to the "Gap" and many bars/restaurants. The beach bar also made delicious pina coladas.

I would recommend this hotel because it was an excellent value.
