We had the most expensive room - ocean front suite. It was tatty and needed a total renovation. The door lock didn't work, and had to be fixed a couple of times.
What was worse was that other cheaper rooms had been renovated. It made us feel like we wasted the upgrade money.
The food was okay, but the fruit juices were watered down. Some of the serving staff was a little unfriendly. |

My wife and I booked a fourteen-day holiday here, but moved out after two days.
The beachfront suite was dirty, the bathroom had no handrails and no exhaust fan. Also, the bed linen was grey and stained.
The staff was okay, and the food was mediocre. |

Unfortunately, my wife just passed away unexpectedly, or I would be in Barbados again this coming March.
We started staying at the club when it was called the "Divi". You have to understand that most people who come here expect the same type of service you get at a stateside resort.
On the contrary, it is laid back here. We found the staff to be charming. If I wanted to have things happen immediately when I snapped my fingers, I could stay home and go to work. It is different here, and we found it to be very relaxing.
We owned a timeshare right next door to the club. We only ever stayed there for a week, and booked three more at the Almond Beach Club - foregoing our second week at the timeshare.
I intend to return to Almond Beach Club, and I'm sure it will be enjoyable. We both have high pressure jobs, so the commodity they sell (peace and quiet) will always attract me. I love the place. |

I really don't like how people lump all Canadians together, we are all individuals you know - just like in every other culture.
My husband and I came here with a large group for our friend's wedding. They had visited the year before and gotten engaged. We had a wonderful time.
The food was great! I would have liked to have egg or salmon or tuna tea sandwiches for tea, but I guess they would be hard to keep in the Barbados heat.
They were refurbishing half of the hotel. When we were here, the spa and fitness gym were being redone, so there was some noise around the pool (except on Sunday).
Amir was great for volleyball in the pool at 4:00 pm (do not miss this). We can't wait to go back. As the mother of two young children, I must say I really enjoyed the Club's peacefulness (sans les enfants)!
Be sure to go to Enid's at the Club! And if you can afford it, try The Cliff for dinner one night. It is rated as one of the top ten restaurants in the world! |

Almond Beach was fantastic! Visited: July 2005 |

We just got back from Barbados and had a fantastic time. We were here on our honeymoon, and thought we couldn't have made a better choice.
The service was outstanding. We were upgraded to a honeymoon suite on the fourth floor which had a lovely view. We were also given a complimentary package of champagne, fruits, candles and a couples massage.
I had read some reviews about the beach. In the beginning, I was upset because we wanted to spend a lot of our time at the beach. When we saw it, it was really small and rocky. However, we walked a couple of minutes to the left, and there was a lovely beach (Sandy Lane). It was amazing. It was even nicer than the beach at the village. Of course, the only drawback was that we didn't have the chairs. But who honestly cares?
The food was exceptional. And the staff was extremely friendly and accommodating.
Overall, it was a cozy resort. At first, it may seem not to be up to expectations. But actually, it was beyond your expectations. |

Barbados was a nice trip, although I have been to many other places that looked the same (if not better) for a much cheaper price tag.
The food was very good, and the staff was very friendly. I was expecting something "out of this world" - after all, it was Barbados. I was a little disappointed to see that it was just like all the rest!
All in all, it was a great trip. We had great weather and loads of fun! I recommend this resort. Enjoy!

Don't believe what you read in the brochure! Visited: November 2004 |

Do not book this hotel if you are expecting a four star holiday. The description in many of the brochures bears absolutely no resemblance to the reality. The hotel at best is 3 star, and that on a good day. It is shabby, in dire need of refurbishment (which the hotel has just started, much to the inconvenience of the guests). It is claustrophobic, the hotel is crammed into a very small space and you can explore all of it in five minutes. The beach, what little there is of it, is less than 30 metres long and is impossible to sit on as the tide comes right up to the hotel steps. Amazingly, there are no umbrellas to provide protection from the sun around the pool area. If that brief description hasn’t put you off, there’s more. The food quality is easily the worst we have ever sampled in the Caribbean. For example, breakfast, which is served up buffet style in an area resembling a works canteen, is a miserable affair. The only exotic fruits are pineapples and melon. No sign of mangoes, strawberries or papaya. There was however plenty of canned fruit salad. Lunch was no better with a half hearted attempt at salads, the Caesar salad mostly comprised of chopped up leaves, caesar dressing and dried packet parmesan. Dinner was a miserable affair with fish cooked to extinction and everything completely tasteless. We ate elsewhere for the rest of our holiday. Enid’s Restaurant was ok but not exactly haute cuisine. Our room was far from clean and had a terrible damp smell. Toiletries were only provided on an irregular basis. All this we summarised in a letter to the manager and his deputy on our third day, with the offer to discuss the problems in more detail – we didn’t even get a reply. The only saving grace at the Almond Beach Club is the staff, generally friendly and helpful. It’s all to their credit that they put up with the shambling efforts of their management. You think that maybe we are being too harsh? Well you try it, and by the way, see what response you get at the bar when you ask for some peanuts! |

My wife and i have just returned from what i can best describe as an 'indifferent' holiday.
Reception :- Pretty dismal really, but staff we found to be available and helpfull. We lost a room key, and a replacement was promised, we hadnt recieved it by the end of our stay! But we still had another one. No problem really.
Pool:- Looked nice but for the first time in my life didnt need to use it.
Beach bar:- mostly friendly and a laugh, have never tried so many permutations containing RUM. Great. And they even gave us a tray in order that we could take copious amounts of coctails to the adjacent beach.
Restaurants:-
Main.... Fine but the birds are a bl..dy pain. They get in and no food is safe, i even watched a sparrow drink from a glass whilst the person was at the buffet. The buffet style breakfast was great and the lady chefs were a laugh in the mornings hard working in a hot location one must remember. Lunches were O.K. chose the buffet mostly having learnt the the other options take ages, and the limited sunshine at this time of year was calling. Evening meals again were fine, a little similar each night but you couldt fault the food quality or presentation. Some of the waiting staff were a little miserable however.
( Had a meal at Sandy Lane now that was quality, extreme quality)
Room:- We had a superior beach room on the 3rd floor sadly one without a balcony, but the view was nice, sorry to anyone down below for the horrible noise the patio door makes when you manage to open it!!! Room quality was nice and had recently been refurbed. Air con was fine, bathroom was fine.
Watersport:- Excellent thanks Phelix!! you were truley a great laugh. Fishing, bannana boat, ski-ing, snorkeling, sailing (it wasnt me who broke the new catamaran HONEST. All fantastic.
Beach:- Small but pleasant, sunbeds a plenty, too many beach vendors for our liking, how many times must you say NO!!
Thank goodness for the Sandy Lane section next door. That is beautiful.
Islanders very friendly and welcomed us, even got a good daily chat out of Tony the friendly security guard from the beautiful house next door.
On the whole it was a great holiday.
My tips for the management....
1 Remove the tables / chairs from the sunny part of the beach and put them in the shade.
2 Get some fly killers in the resteraunt.
3 Clean the beach properly every day.
4 Cut back the foliage from the downstairs beach front rooms.
5 Put some fine netting around the perimeter of the restaraunt to prevent the Bl...y birds from having a field day.
We would not go again because the world is a big place, but dont believe the bad reviews, its ok. |

This was a great honeymoon spot...quiet and relaxing! Visited: June 2004 |

To start, we had our honeymoon here last month, and loved every minute of it. It was fun interacting with people of different cultures (British).
As for people who expect a five-star, perfectly neat and quick staff, this is not the place. The staff is very friendly and is very laid back. So you won't get your food in 15 minutes, but you will enjoy the atmosphere.
Sandy Lane Beach is a great area to lay out on the beach, while the local beach at the Almond Beach Club is good for reading, drinking, etc.
The pools are great, and just recently they started playing water volleyball in the afternoons.
I would recommend a visit to the Village for dinner, but you'll be happy that you didn't stay there, if you're looking for peace and quiet.
This is a great place to stay, especially if you're laid back and open-minded. |

You need to accept that Barbados is a chilled out place. Visited: January 2004 |

My wife and I have stayed at both the Village and the Club. We have also stayed at the Tamirand Cove. It would be wrong to say that any of these hotels are better than the other as they are all so laid back but it is our belief that if you are going to go to Barbados be prepared to suffer a lesser quality of hotel than at home. This is unless you wish to go to Sandy Lane where it is like any other true 5* hotel. But you shouldnt go to Barbados and not experience the whole thing i.e not perfect hotels, not perfect staff and not perfect service this is what it is all about.
Chilling out without a care in the world apart from where your next beer is coming from or cocktail. If you dont accept this you will be disappointed.
Our review of Barbados is:
A wonderful place that lets you be who you want to be, when you wont to be it and only if you can be bothered. The Almond beach Club is a great place to be without kids and to meet interesting people and the Village is the same with a more wild night if you fancy it.
And one more comment is to answer a woman at the bottom of this review, Brits do not have bland pallets we have the best taste in food in the world and spicing something up with pepper sauce too make it burning hot is not to flavour it, it is to kill the actual taste of food to suit your burnt tasteless pallet. The food is fantastic at the Italian at the Village and all resturaunts at the Club.
Go and enjoy yourself we are going back in 4 days time for another three weeks. |

The Canadians must be hard to please! Visited: October 2003 |

Having read all the comments posted here before I went out - I was very apprehensive. I needn't have worried!
The place was fine, unless you're Canadian it would appear from the reviews!
The resort was probably the quietest I have ever been to - anywhere in the world. There was one thing to do - relax!
If you want a bustling, fun-packed resort - the Almond Beach Club is not for you. It was a quiet, quaint little place with good food, excellent and friendly service with plenty to do. There were good watersports, trips a plenty (if you want them - at a cost) and there were some nice places around the resort if you want to treat yourself for a meal elsewhere.
The Italian at the Village was excellent. Don't bother with the other restaurants up there, though. You'll get the same at the Club. (For reference, I found the Village to be a madhouse full of kids!)
The mixed reviews for service standards I can't believe. I've been to Barbados three times now - service is one thing you cannot fault them on. The Barbadians are the friendliest people you could wish to meet. Things just happen a little less quickly out there. But that's what Barbados is all about - takin' it easy!
The rooms and facilities were nice, but needed a spruce up - which they started to do on a small scale when I left.
Barbados is a Caribbean treasure, one of the most beautiful places on earth. Just have an open mind, chill out and enjoy. If you don't - you dont know how to live! |

disgusting food, rude staff and dirty rooms Visited: August 2003 |

Barbados is a fantastic isle and my husband and me had a great time there but the Almond Beach Club didn't contribute to our enjoyment. Absolutely. The food was disgusting and no offence to people from other countries but we are sure that the Almond Beach Club is catering to some people who can't cook or don't use to eat well. The staff was rude and they have different behaviour between people from USA or UK and we Europeans. The rooms are dirty and there's too much humidity. The bed was wet and the ceiling was full of drops.
We paid too much for staying in a "camping"!!!
We will NEVER come back at the Almond Beach Club. |

Caribbean culture with a splash of luxury. Visited: June 2003 |
| Posted by tony_alger |

This was our third visit to the Almond Beach Club. There is something about this place that makes us want to return again and again. Call me crazy, but when I holiday in the Caribbean, I want to experience the local way of life coupled with a just a little bit of what I am used to back home.
This place offers just that. Yes, they shelter, feed and care for you, but they do it in the own traditional way because they expect you want to adopt their way of life for the short time you are here.
Their motto is "no hurry, no worry"!
Therefore, so what if your plumbing isn't 100%, or your patio door doesn't lock, or your service is slow? The locals consider these situations as non-life threatening - although some guests appear to stress themselves into beleiving they are.
It is apparent from some of the comments, that some visitors expect this place to be a luxury five-star rated experience. Well, it isn't. If you want that, go visit the plastic world of Sandy Lane next door with its $1,400 per night Bed and Breakfast price tag. However, if you want good quality food with a touch of the local chilled attitude, in a typical Caribbean accommodation, this is the place for you.
One tip: If you are a couple contemplating staying at the Almond Beach Village instead of the Club, let me help you decide. We experienced several couples (mostly honeymooners!) packing up their things and moving away from the Village to stay at the Club.
If you want peace and quiet with plenty of laid-back culture, stay at the Club. You won't be disappointed! |

This is an excellent resort for someone who hasn't been. Visited: May 2003 |

Despite some of the negative comments I've been reading here, I would have to totally disagree with them. I have never been out of North America, but in May 2003 my wife and I decided to come here for our honeymoon.
I found coming to a new country totally interesting and very different than what I am used to seeing. Yes, I can see how someone could interpret lots of things as poor quality and bad service. But to simply put it, If you want to have a holiday with the same standards as you are used to, stay home and go to your local hotel.
Coming to Barbados was excellent. It took a day or two to get used to the new atmosphere, but came to love it. I think the Almond Beach Club was the best 12 days of holiday I have ever spent.
Also, for some one who loves critters (like me) this was an excellent place to come to - the anoles, microteiids, geckos and land crabs were so awesome to see. Although most people visiting here were familiar with them, they were neat for someone from Canada who has probably never seen them before.
We spent most of the time at the resort, but rented a cab a couple times to view the island. Most of the other time was spent in Tommy's Rum Shack playing Wari.
They served excellent food (I ate more different types of fish than I usually do in a year). So, please don't bash it - just stay home. We had an excellent trip to an awesome resort in a cool country and met great people. I give it an "A++". |

Bland food, indifferent staff. Visited: April 2003 |

My husband and I just returned from an 8-night stay at the Almond Beach Club (ABC). We had a nice time in Barbados, but I cannot say that the ABC contributed very much to our enjoyment. Our best times were spent outside of the resort when we rented a car, went diving, or took a catamaran cruise.
The food in the various restaurants is, at best, mediocre. We did have one (and only one) excellent meal at the Italian restaurant, but this was merely a hit among misses because the other times we ate there, it was very average. No offense to people from the UK, but I think that the ABC is catering to a certain bland English palate. For example, we asked for an extra spicy West Indian curry at Enid's and received only a mildly-heated dish that we had to spice up ourselves with hot sauce.
The staff was indifferent and sometimes downright rude. A waitress at the Sunset restaurant actually sneered at my husband when he politely asked her to bring us more coffee. It's like our presence was an inconvenience. But to be fair, once and a while we did encounter a pleasant and helpful staff member.
A water-main on the island burst while we were there, causing the entire west coast to be without water for about 12 hours. This didn't bother us because, obviously, there's nothing much that the hotel can do about it. However, the least that the hotel could have done was send around a couple of bottles of water to each room with a note explaining the problem. But they did neither and instead left us to our own devices to find enough water even just to brush our teeth before bed.
The reception area is small and usually staffed by only one person. You can guarantee at least a 5-10 minute wait to ask even the simplest question. If you have a request or a matter that needs attention, you have to follow-up at least a couple of times to make sure they're dealing with it. For example, they had us checking out on the wrong day and I had to speak to three different people over two days to get this sorted out. Brutal!
Despite my poor review of this hotel, we did have a good time in Barbados where the beaches are lovely and the weather is beautiful. However, I wouldn't stay at the Almond Beach Club again. |

My daughter and I found the food and the service at Almond Beach Club to be absolutely fantastic. The accommodations were very adequate and comfortable, and the water sports available were great! Most of all, the people had to be the main reason why I plan to go back in 2004. Thank you! |

We had a fantastic holiday here. Visited: March 2003 |

We were upgraded to a one-bedroom suite and found the resort to be very good. The food was great, and Enid's and the Italian restaurant at the Village were superb.
The staff was friendly and helpful, and service very good. However, on a few occasions, it was a bit hit and miss in Sunset and at the Main Bar. We also had a great meal at Mango's by the Sea which was very, very good! Tommy's Rum Shop had great staff.
The beach at the Club was small and the Village beach was better, although atmosphere at the Club was nicer and more friendly. Water-skiing was included, so do give it a try. ThefFitness center and spa are very new and also very good.
If I was being harsh, there were a couple of things they needed to address. Athough the rooms were clean, the furnishings looked a bit tired. Also, the foliage needed to be cut back quite a lot. Finally, the main bar should have stayed open later than 11:00 pm and they needed to change reception as there was currently no sense of arrival.
Overall, though, we would definitely return, as it was the best resort we have stayed in on any of the Caribbean islands - and Barbados was great. We didn't want to leave. |

I would give it a three rating - maximum. Visited: March 2003 |
| Posted by chilfir |
 |
We just returned from two weeks at Almond Beach Club. I only gave this resort a "three" rating because of the lack of maintenance.
Yes, they had just refurnished the rooms, with new curtains, bedcovers, carpets, etc., but this did not make up for the physical maintenance issues (the plumbing).
On arrival, we were upgraded to a suite, which we thought was great. However, we soon found that the toilet did not flush properly. For six days we asked for this to be fixed. Each time, someone came, but the next day the problem was back.
Eventually, after the toilet overflowed, we asked to be moved to another room. However, in our new room, the tap in the bathtub would not turn off, and when the toilet was flushed, we could hear gurgling in the sink and there was a bad odor.
We were promised the probelm would be fixed the next day. After a disturbed night because of the noise of running water, we were told that it could not be fixed. We - yet again - moved rooms.
This third and last room also had a plumbing problem - a leaking tap - but it was tolerable and we were tired of moving. All of our complaints and requests were politely received and the staff did all they could to correct the problem, though.
The reason I gave three stars instead of two was because the best feature of the hotel was the food. It was of good quality, and there was lots of variety. We especially appreciated the coffee/tea station near the pool which was available from very early morning to supper time.
The buffet area was not set up for efficient serving and the food was not labeled, which would have been helpful, especially for those with allergies. The hot desserts were next to the savoury dishes. I saw one lady put custard on her salad because whe thought it was mayonnaise!
The beach was very small and crowded. All the chairs were practically touching one another. There was, however, a wonderful long sandy beach right next to the hotel property for long walks.
The snorkling directly in front of the hotel was good. The pools were well maintained. I saw one comment on this board about loud music during the day, but we did not experience this. I did not use the spa facilities, but did use the well-equiped gym. |

I'm so glad I ignored the bad reviews! Visited: January 2003 |

I am genuinely baffled by the bad reviews some people have given this resort. I was seriously tempted to cancel the holiday and rebook at the Tamarind, where I stayed last time, but I am so glad I didn't. Worrying about the negative reviews spoiled the run up to my holiday, so I want to put the record straight:
We found the staff polite and friendly, but not obsequious or cheesy. It was different from the service I have experienced while on holiday in the US, which I sometimes have found "fake". Perhaps the lack of smarminess is what some of the US guests perceive as 'unfriendly'.
Our suite was spacious, tastefully decorated and a stone's throw from the beach. I couldn't fault it. There was certainly no mold, mildew, dust or dodgy plumbing. I should note that my mum was undergoing aggressive chemotherapy at the time and there was no way we would have jeopardized her health if the standards of hygiene were lacking in any way.
The food was yummy - especially the breakfasts. We feasted every morning on melon, pineapple, plantain fritters, french toast with maple syrup and crispy bacon, sausages, croissants, and so on.
Lunch and dinner were also great, especially at Enids. Every taste was catered for, not just that of the 'unsophisticated British palate', as one charming reviewer from Hicksville - sorry Oakville - put it. And as for the service being slow, I suspect the oh-so-urbane reviewer was more used to McDonalds. And the story about the woman putting custard on her salad because the food wasn't labelled - ha ha ha! Get a life...and a sense of humor while you're at it.
They didn't have the biggest beach in the world, but as these reviewers should remember, size isn't everything. The trees on the beach offered beautiful dappled shade, and homed adorable Disneyesque tweety birds. The sea was quite shallow and pebbly / rocky directly in front of the resort, which was good for snorkeling. Swimming was better up at the Sandy Lane (a five minute stroll), as the soft sand stretched out into the gently sloping sea-bed.
I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this hotel, and plan to book another holiday there as soon as possible.
If you want international-style bland plushness and fawning staff, stay at a Hilton. If you want old-school Bajan service and luxury with a Caribbean flavor, holiday at Almond Beach Club. |
