3.0 stars Our nine-day stay was good and met most of our expectations. Visited: May 2004

The hotel was situated about quarter of mile off the main road which eliminated any possible road noises on the property. The grounds were lush and nicely maintained centered around a small sectional pool and swim-up bar. We had a one-bedroom suite that was spacious with a balcony. All the rooms were situated such that a view of the beach was possible.

The beach area was nice with clean white sand. However, being situated on the southwest coastline, the water was rough and was red flagged for no swimming twice on our stay. If calm Caribbean water is a requirement, then a resort on the West coast is essential. The tennis court was reasonable, however it could use some repair. We never used the gym equipment and cannot comment

The Lantern restaurant food was adequate, but overpriced. Although general food cost was higher, we found better value in the St. Lawerence Gap area and the outside vendors in Oistins. In addition, there was a lunch truck that came between 12-2 and had good Bajan food. We suggest Josep's in the Gap as nice restaurant with good presentation.

The hotel island tour offered was not that rewarding. Although not as pricy as other tours offered, I would suggest the Island Safari. The catamaran trip on the west coast is essential. We used the Tiami and had a great experience.

As a total value for the money , we were satisfied with our visit and would suggest to others the Bougainvillea, however our overall experience of the island was not as superb as others we have visited.

2.0 stars Drug peddlers were annoying Visited: April 2004

The rooms and grounds were nice and well maintained. Most of the staff were nice, except not accomadating for handicap persons requiring ground floor rooms.

In less than 5 minutes of arriving the first day on the beach, my party was harrassed by drug peddlers, and asking the men 'do you need a woman'. The beach attendants had their own guests who were not staying at the hotel, taking up the lounge chairs by the pool.

If we walked outside the hotel at night, drug peddlers hung out outside the hotel harrassing us peddling drugs.

Lanterns Restaurant breakfast and dinner was excellent. The Thursday night show was excellent.

Due to the staff being uncooperative about giving us a ground floor room (for handicap reasons), we will not return there again.

We loved this place. It was really nice. I would suggest that families, couples, and singles stay at Bougainvillea.

The grounds were well kept, the rooms were clean and the staff was very nice. As usual, there are some people who complain about everything. I often say you pay for what you get.

I highly recommend staying here. Try it, you will like it!

Bougainvillea was a great resort. They had spacious rooms, most of which overlooked the ocean. The beach was clean and beautiful. The staff was very friendly, and they offered many different activities. I will definitely be back.

I took an impromptu trip to Barbados and decided to stay at this resort as a fluke. Needless to say, it was one of my best trips to Barbados.

The room was lovely; beautifully decorated and extremely clean; I swear I didn't even see a bug or creepy crawly! I was truly impressed.

Buffet breakfast every morning was delicious, and the dinners we had at both restaurants were pricy, but very tasty. After all, you're on holiday!

Anyway, staff was great, the location was perfect, and the hotel had a nice, friendly atmosphere. The beach was private, and very clean. I just loved it and wil be back very soon!

3.0 stars This is an honest review of Bougainvillea. Visited: July 2003

My family and I (wife and two kids ages four and seven) visited in mid-July of this year. Let me start with the good stuff.

The hotel was laid out pretty nice. The rooms were spacious, the fitness center was adequate, and the service was okay. The pool was small, especially for kids because there was one section that was supposedly for adults only (kids were there anyway and I don't blame them).

The beach area was a lot smaller than advertised. The actual length of usable beach was about 75 yards. The Lantern restaurant did not, repeat, did not have good food. Not to mention they took forever. You are better off taking the bus into Oistins and getting freshly cooked seafood (kingfish, swordfish, snapper, etc.) from one of the food stands or buying from one of the two lunch trucks that showed up outside the hotel around 12:30 or 1 pm. We didn't discover the trucks until our last day. Also, try the local coconut ice cream. It was good.

There was really is no "kids program" as advertised, or at least none worth sending your kids to. I gave this hotel only three stars because the restaurant did not have good food (and had the nerve to be pricy), their beach and pool were really small and they kind of bent the truth as far as their services. This was offset by decent (not excellent) service, okay rooms and an adequate fitness center.

4.0 stars A lovely hotel on beautiful beach with lush landscape! Visited: July 2003

We loved our stay at Bougainvillea and would return. We went with our two kids (ages 10 and 13) and they could not get enough of the bouncy waves wonderful for boogie boarding.

The beach staff was friendly and they had several watersports available. Lounges and umbrellas were also available. My daughter got her hair braided by a local hair braider right on the beach and it turned out wonderful.

Breakfast at open air Lanterns By the Sea overlooking ocean was superb. There was a tour information person on hand. I recommend a catamaran sail up the coast that included snorkeling, lunch and drinks.

Also, Roots and Rhythms was fun for the whole family. It was a lively show of cultural and popular music and dancing
including a buffet dinner. There were many tours to take on this island including an on- and off-road jeep safari around the island.

The hotel was beautifully landscaped with waterfalls in the pool and a swim-up Tiki bar with two happy hours.

We were pleased with our "room", it was much more than a room! They had large balconies all overlooking beach, a living room with glass sliders, a small but adequate kitchen with dining area, roomy bathroom and a nice bedroom with huge closet and pretty windows.

They had a super workout room that we used daily. There was ping pong for kids, but they really they didn't have it together yet for much of a kid's program - at least nothing for my two kid's ages.

The hotel had a lovely light ceramic tile throughout the entire property, with very attractive architecture. It was close to a couple of small food shops, one was a one-minute walk for simple things. Super markets were a short bus ride or taxi ride away. Taxis were always available in the hotel front.

This was one of the best vacations we ever had. The hotel on certain evenings had entertainment and dancing. We would go back and stay at Bougainvillea and do more things next time.

This hotel was excellent, the staff was friendly, and the facilities were great.

Our room was brilliant. We had a TV and everything. Also, the watersports was very, very good, and the sea was perfect for boogieboarding.

Iwould also recommend Oistens for succulent fish (it is not far from Christ Church).

3.0 stars It was not quite what I expected. Visited: June 2003

I must admit that after reading the reviews on the resort I expected a bit more than what we got.

The one-bedroom suite was a bit smaller than what we have been used to in the past, but was clean and had a nicely equipped kitchen.

The bathroom was a nice size, but did not have an outlet for anything other than an electric razor. Consequently, every day I had to pull out the nightstand in the bedroom in order to plug in my curling iron. It does not sound like a big deal, but doing it for several days in a row got tedious. Also, the water pressure in the shower was pretty much non-existent, but was enough to get you clean.

The beach area was small but adequate, with a number of palapas, and was clean, with the exception of a dead bird that was picked up fairly quickly. Further down the beach was litter and a dead rat, which I did not see the next time we walked in that area.

I found the numerous solicitors on the beach to be annoying. On any given day anywhere from five to eight people would come up trying to sell things. I have never been on a beach where this has happened and it was a nuisance. Usually a firm "no" would do the trick, but sometimes that was not enough. Locals tried to sell my husband, son, and his friend drugs on numerous occasions. A simple "no thanks" usually worked.

Be aware that the Thursday night buffet at Lanterns is quite loud. We had a room facing the restaurant and the Caribbean, and once the entertainment started, it was so loud that it sounded like the music was being played in our room. Luckily, all the festivities ended by 10:00 pm.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. We needed extra blankets and towels, and they got them for us right away.

The grounds were nicely landscaped, and the resort had a connecting small pool area. All in all, I would rate the resort a 3.5.

The 2003 Hamilton Tiger-Cat cheerleaders are proud to say that our 2004 calendar was shot in Barbados thanks to Bougainvillea Beachfront resort.

As coordinator of the Hamilton Tiger-Cat cheerleaders I would like to thank Bougainvillea for the following: A very friendly and professional staff; beautiful, immaculate and spacious ocean view beachfront accommodations and property; and great buffet breakfasts with smiling and friendly servers.

Staying at Bougainvillea resort was definitely a pleasure and I will always recommend this location to anyone looking for accommodations that would be worth their money as well their comfort. I must also share with you the five-minute cab ride to the fantastic St. Lawrence Gap.

We were just here six months ago with my husband's son, and we are back again for another visit. The kids love this place, maybe as much as we do!

The pools are so pretty and relaxing, and the ocean is just a few feet away which is great for disabled guests. Everything is close. It is like you live here for as long as you stay.

The rooms are not only beautiful, but also relaxing. The view is amazing and the sound of the ocean will put you to sleep. The water is so blue and clean, with waves all the time. Some days they are a little too big, but then you can enjoy the beautiful pools with waterfalls and pretty flowers everywhere.

Give this resort a try and I know you will return every year just like we have. Oh, when you are on the beach, say "hi" to Margaret, and maybe let her braid your hair!

My husband and I were married at the resort. As soon as we arrived we were upgraded to the penthouse suite (one-bedroom, two full bathrooms, kitchenette, two balconies).

Avril, our wedding planner, did a great job with our wedding ceremony. She also booked the photographer and videographer. We were very happy with our photos and the wedding videographer (David Scott). It was well worth the price.

Our family group recently returned from a six-day stay at the Bougainvillea Resort Hotel. We had a wonderful time in Barbados!

Although we found the hotel a little pricy, and the size of the beach disappointingly small, we found that the accommodations were very comfortable, the atmosphere intimate and the hotel generally lovely with its cascading fountains and flowers.

More importantly, the staff at the front desk and in the Lanterns restaurant made us feel at home and provided personalized service. And, we were impressed by the hotel's quick response to a couple of housekeeping-related issues.

We would definitely stay here again or even stay at the less luxurious sister property SandAcres, where a couple of our family members stayed.

Upon returning home from Barbados this week, I wanted to share with others the fantastic experience the Hamilton Tiger Cat Cheerleaders had at the Bougainvillea/Sand Acres Resorts.

The hotel and beach area were beautiful locations to shoot our calendar and the landscaping was well taken care of. The suites were perfect for what we wanted and the staff was amazing. Not only were they very accommodating, but they went above and beyond by teaching us about the island and facts about the area.

The island entertainment such as the Jolly Roger, and Harbour Lights Dinner Shows were exciting and a great way to meet other people. We had an amazing experience at this resort and would gladly tell others about it. We would love to go back anytime!

I stayed at Bougainvillea Beach Resort in May 2003 during a professional swimsuit calendar photo shoot with 24 other models.

The rooms were wonderful - spacious and clean, and the maid service was excellent! The decor and grounds were beautiful and exotic without being pretentious. The staff was very friendly and helpful at all times.

The restaurant had an excellent caesar salad! Happy hour was a great social time every day. The hotel also had great facilities, including the gym, a lovely picturesque beach, clean pools, water activities such as jet skiing, and all-around pleasant surroundings and service.

I would go back in a second. One thing we liked the most was that the hotel was close to action hot-spots and was also a short drive from the airport, making everything convenient for our vacation. Thanks Bougainvillea/Sandy Acres for a great trip!

My aunt and uncle took my best friend and me on a trip to Barbados for graduation. It was the best place I have ever been in my life. I was in heaven the entire time. The hotel staff and watersports staff were extremely nice and helpful. I would recommend this place to anyone!

We booked this hotel after reading reviews online and in travel books. We found the staff at the hotel to be very friendly. One night, we returned after dinner to our room, only to discover that the bed had been stripped and new sheets had not been put on. A simple call to the front desk had housekeeping at our door in about 20 minutes (and this was after 9:30 pm or so).

The only thing we would not recommend would be the restaurant on site--Lanterns. In our opinion, this place was not good! In our package, we received "free" breakfast each morning (The "Boss" breakfast). This was not the buffet, which we would have preferred. I assume we could have upgraded, but no one told us this when we checked in.

In addition, we did not get much to eat. The first day, they asked us if we would like coffee. We did, and then found out that if we wanted orange juice with the meal, this would be extra! You were only allowed one free liquid! We thought that seemed a little cheap--the glass of orange juice served was the size of a shot! Plus the fact that the staff at the restaurant was very slow! They would never come back to see if you needed anything and half the time forgot to bring water that was asked for.

Keeping these things in mind, I felt that the prices there were very expensive. When we ate lunch there one day, it was over $50(US). We liked the "truck" that came every day at 12pm right in front of the hotel (closer to Sandy Acres). The same guy has been coming there for over 10 years and the food was excellent! Home cooking from "Leroy's Home Cookin' Catering". The two of us were stuffed after eating a huge order that cost us only $6(US).

The restaurants at The Gap were nice. Harlequin was very good. The best over there--also Zodiac was nice. The prices were okay--maybe the same for dinner as the hotel but much better food.

A simple "move on" or "no thanks" gets the vendors on beaches to leave you alone. Because we booked a package through a consolidator, we had a "tour guide" (Eudora) who booked any extras we wanted to do. She showed up at 9:30am on Saturday at the hotel--she should have been there at 8am! She went over some stuff and we booked the Atlantis (good) The Harbor Cruise (Kind of a shabby "boat"--not worth it--food stunk and snorkel trip from off the boat was horrible).

We were not happy with the fishing trip that this guide recommended, Cannon Tours. It was $200(US) to go out for 4 hours. They never checked the bait, and no one caught a thing! All they handed out was a small bag of chips.

If we go back, we would certainly be wiser to the good and the bad!
