Angler Apartments is a vintage, tropical place to stay. It is old, but charming.

We sat on our porch mornings and watched the birds try to steal our breakfast! Hotels don't offer this service! Charm and lots of flowers make up for the age. Everything including the air conditioning worked. There were no feather pillows, but the bathroom was clean, and the host was pleasant!

4.0 stars It was very much worth the money. Visited: November 2008

My business partner and I were supposed to go to a conference in Bangkok. However, in November 2008, the country's political situation was confused, we both had ten days of free time.

Fortunately, we found ourselves in a recession trip to Barbados. We were lucky to have chosen Angler apartments. It was exactly what we wanted, as we did not want to stay in a crowded, five-star, overpriced resort full of tourists.

The apartments were basic level, spacious, very clean, and functional. The coolest part of staying in this apartment was the five-star, nearly private beach. We also got four new friends - the owner, Chandra, with her three dogs! She was very helpful, and arranged everything for us.

We were pleased we had a well equipped kitchen available. Food is our hobby, and we both like to make different, exotic foods when we are abroad. As a result, we did not use The Garden Restaurant much. The island's best restaurants are close and easily reachable, too.

Chandra helped us to rent a car, but I do not recommend to anyone to drive the car himself. The local driving style is left-hand traffic, and it is quite wild. Fortunately, there are two kinds of local buses, private and public. If you want to listen great reggae music, choose those yellow private ones!

In addition to traffic, the island's dangers are the unpleasant water scooters you have to avoid when you are snorkeling. Otherwise, Barbados feels safe and is very easy-going, beautiful island.

It is expensive, as are most of the Caribbean islands. However, you can save some money with a wise choice of a hotel like Angler. Probably, I will come back to this island, and will definitely choose Chandra's place again.

Also, the local rum is good and cheap!

2.0 stars This is a lovely place to unwind. Visited: September 2008

I stayed at Angler for two weeks in September with my husband. Chandra arranged for a taxi to meet us at the airport. We like doing our own thing on holiday, so we found Angler to be just right for us.

The accommodation is basic, but comfortable and clean. It had air conditioning and a ceiling fan. Chandra gave us lots of information, but let us make our own decisions. She also arranged car hire for us, and let me borrow her mobile phone charger.

We only used the restaurant once at lunch. The meal portion was generous and very tasty. The garden was lovely, with lots of birds (and even monkeys).

The beach was just five houses down the quiet road and across the main road. Access was via a private walkway, with the steps down to it. It was quite steep, but had a good hand rail. The small beach was so quiet - it was just perfect. We snorkeled here lots, and followed a small turtle for a while one day.

This was a clean and affordable place to stay in a quiet residential area. There is also a bus stop at bottom of road.

1.0 stars It was a really awful and shabby place. Visited: May 2007

We stayed here, and had a rubbish experience. The place that was advertised was not what we got.

The rooms were very small and dirty. There was no hot water most times. Chandra, the so-called manager, was unhelpful, uniformed, and did nothing to help us!

Our shower was a lead pipe in the wall, the bathroom was dirty, and the air conditioning was way below standard. I could not believe how dirty the bed and matress were. I slept on a chair!

I thought Angler Apartments was a dirty rip off. I advise you not going there, as it is nothing like it is advertised on the web site.

MANAGER'S REPLY:
This couple lives in the UK, the guy, a Bajan and the female Jamaican; the guy came to visit his relatives here. They booked a studio on a special pay for 5 nights and stay 7 nights.
On arrival and checking in they said the room was small but everything is fine. I advised them they can pay an extra $10.00 per night and move to a larger unit; they refused. They complained that they already paid too much for flight and accommodation.

A few hours after the lady asked for another fan; the unit has a 12,000 BTU a/c 2 years old and a ceiling fan. She said she do not like using a/c and prefer fan; she was given a fan. These guests were running the a/c and both fans and had their bathroom windows and front door open. At nights they had the a/c turn so high that she asked for extra blankets and in the morning complained that the water is not hot enough.

The unit has a queen bed which was bought in February 2007 and all our beds have mattress pads so that they are not soiled. If their bed was dirty and she had to sleep on a chair the riot squad would have had to be called in.

On day two the guests' returned just as the room attendant was leaving the room and the lady started to shout and scream at the cleaner; with words "I don't want any one in my room, I have things in there, I can clean my own room". The handyman was raking the lawn and witnessed this outburst. I informed the guests that the units must be cleaned daily by my staff and was told they do not want any maid service they will clean the unit.
The fact was these guests were using illegal substances and hence did not want this to be known.

The so called lead pipe[ chrome pipe] is part of the shower unit; typical with any shower unit and the shower head is a water saving head.

These guests trashed the unit, broke off doors from the wardrobe; broke dishes, and left the unit so dirty it took two cleaners an entire day to clean and put the apartment back together; they drank and use all items from the mini bar and did not pay. The lady had a very hostile attitude, never pleasant, never smiling, always bitching and complaining. The guests in the surrounding units complain about the noises from the fights between this couple and one can always here the woman shouting instead of speaking.

This couple should stay at home and not go on holidays and definitely not be around other guests as they infringe on other peoples holiday and good times.

The Angler Apartments, although simple, was a very comfortable place to stay. Its manager (Shandra) was extremely helpful when it came to recommending places to go and see.

The beach was a five-minute walk away from the apartments. If we were to visit Barbados again, we would definitely lodge here without a doubt!

I don't know what anyone sees in these apartments. I've stayed in budget hotels all over the world, and this was by far the worst! If you enjoy sleeping in a sauna on a mattress that is hard as granite as mosquitos eat you alive, then this is the place for you!

The shower door wouldn't even close, and the towels practically disenigrated when I touched them. The owner gave us a 25-minute timespan to be at breakfast that fit around her schedule. We were on time, and had to wait on her for 15 minutes! She showed up without an apology, and we had to wait even longer while she made herself a breakfast shake.

And it was not cheap, either. She tried to charge us more money than she quoted on the phone. Also, when we left, she tried to charge us for everything in the minibar, which we didn't even touch! As we were trying to check out, she ignored us for several minutes while screaming at her employee.

We found the owner to be disrespectul, and I was appalled I had to give her any money. We left after three days and went to the other side of the island. I've never been so relieved to leave a place. I feel it is my duty to warn everyone out there. I suggest you stay away!

This was my first time to the Caribbean, and I did not want to stay in a well-established resort full of tourists. I wanted something secluded, small and a little homey...so I took a chance at staying at the Angler.

I arrived at night and went straight to bed. When I woke up in the morning, it was so magical for me. There were so many different kinds of lush fruit trees with so many different birds chirping.

And the apartments had everything I would need. Chandra, the owner, was just the best host to my boyfriend and me. She did her best at getting whatever we needed.

The beach was just a block away and it was breathtaking! The sunset was especially beautiful with the local children swimming, and all we could see was their silhouhette with the sun glistening behind them. I got a little teary-eyed because of that!

Anyway, I never write reviews about anything, but after this trip and my experience at the Angler, with Chandra and just being on that island...I just had to let everybody know that I adore this place and would recommend it to anybody wanting to get away from it all, if you know what I mean!

We really enjoyed the apartments. It was quiet because there were only a few apartments.

The host gave us information about the city and any place or thing we needed.

I really enjoyed my first stay in Barbados. I plan on coming back.

I just got back from a four-night/five-day stay in Barbados. As a single woman traveling alone, the owner/manager/head chef, Chandra, watched out for me. She made sure I was safe, knew where I was going, and even took me with her to a yoga class!

The anemities were exactly what you would want out of an efficiency - clean, homey, stocked with towels, dishes, pots, pans, and a full kitchen set-up. The apartments were very quiet with a wonderful garden full of chirping birds. And the beach was directly across the street, not a bad walk at all.

I only gave the property three stars because it was obviously not a luxury resort -- but it's not trying to be. And yes, I will stay here again.

After spending four days in Barbados and seeing quite a few different towns all around the island, I concluded that the Angler Apartments was the absolute best place to stay for those who aren't looking for posh conditions.

Its location was very good. It was on the nicest part of the island (Holetown area) and had a beautiful, secluded beach within 150 yards, which was actually nicer than some of the resort beaches. An FYI - locals came by on personal watercraft and offered rides, so you may want to bring a little cash with you.

The only problem with the location was that there was not much else within walking distance. Make sure you have something to eat and drink at your apartment because there was no convenience store or deli within walking distance. There was a bus stop very close by, and the service seemed to be quite frequent and reliable. Still, a car would be helpful. Also, Sassafrass was 30 yards down the same road as the apartment and had excellent food. It was a little pricy, but worth it.

The apartment conditions were clean and simple. There was a small porch area to hang out on and a small, community bar area.

Chandra, the owner, was very friendly and nice. She helped me get an apartment, contact my friend back home, and recommended restaurants and bars to go to. Also, she cooked breakfast - but check ahead to make sure she'll be available.

One word of caution for pedestrians, be very careful walking the main street, especially at night. There were areas with no sidewalks, and for some foreigners this may be their first time driving on the other side of the road (like me).

Overall, I would definitely stay here again, and have recommended this place to five other people already. Especially when compared to the outrageous prices the resorts charge, this place is a steal if you don't need pampering.

Anglers Apartments provided my wife and me with a perfect setting for our holiday in Barbados. Chandra was helpful and friendly, and as we found out toward the end of our stay, a wonderful cook.

Our apartment had a veranda shaded by breadfruit, mango and avocado trees, and there were birds nesting in the hanging baskets around it: A yellow breasted bird within two metres of where we sipped our evening punch, and round the corner, where we ate our breakfast, were a pigeon and a sparrow.

The local beach, only a couple of minutes walk away, was virtually deserted. I think we only shared it with anyone else twice.

Oh, and don't be afraid to use the local buses if you are going out, the yellow buses were a load of fun and will stop and pick you up anywhere you wave at them.

This was the least expensive room we could find on the island. We paid $85/night.

Not all the rooms were air conditioned, so be sure to ask for one that is. The place was clean, and Chandra, the owner, lived on the property and kept it safe. Chandra was very nice and made us feel very welcome when we arrived.

The employees didn't always show up, so it was a gamble as to whether our room was made up or not when we got home. The hotel was about two blocks from the ocean and we had to cut through the property of a closed-down hotel to get to the beach.

If you don't plan to spend a lot of time in the hotel or room, this place is fine. Just remember, there were no shops, no stores, not even an ice machine. The only toiletries you will get here are two bars of soap. Like I said, you get exactly what you pay for.

This place is just what you need if you want to get away from the glitz or grim as you like. It's cheap (relatively) and once you remember you're in the Caribbean, the facilities really aren't too bad!

Ask Chandra for a garden room - this is a must. Don't be scared by her forthrightness - she's an absolute diamond. She was always willing to get us a drink even when she was busy keeping the place spick and span (and trying to get the staff to do some work!)

At Angler, you are really close to some good beach action, and the delights of Holetown.

This is much better than south-coasting it for similar money in non-descript hotels with lobbies and corridors!

Angler Apartments are very inexpensive. They are decorated in bright colors and have a nice landscape. Also, the owner is helpful. They offer a great locale - just a 30-second walk to beach.
I loved it. Thanks!

2.0 stars Angler Apartments is a good value for the money! Visited: April 2004

This is a very clean, but basic sort of accommodations; the price is right and you get exactly what has been promised.

The apartment (with ac) where I stayed, contained a queen-sized bed with a combo kitchen/dining/living room. It was adequate, but a microwave would have enhanced the amenities. There was a TV in living area only, but with cable.

There was also a bathroom with a stall shower and one sink; and separate beach towels were provided.

Chandra, the proprietor, was warm and hospitable and looked after every need; she also cooked a good meal in the lovely outdoor, covered small dining area.

The beach was a five-minute walk away, crossing the road. There was good swimming and one can walk on beach to Holetown for supermarket supplies to cook at home.

Restaurants in walking distance were limited, however. And I suggest getting a rental car to discover this beautiful island with its friendly people. It was a good value. I would love to return!

3.0 stars It is perfect for taking a holiday at your pace - with no fuss! Visited: November 2003

My husband and I have just returned from 12 lovely, relaxing nights at the Angler Apartments in Barbados.

If you want a big, flash hotel with lots of expensive, unnecessary trimmings, don't go to Angler's (there's no pool, no large sun deck, no organized entertainment, etc). On the other hand, if you want somewhere to escape from it all, relax, and enjoy your holiday without feeling pressured, this is ideal location.

It is definitely best suited to independent, adult travelers - who can sort themselves out on holiday, with a few helpful pointers in the right direction!

The apartments are clean and tidy, and ours was very spacious. What they lack in cosmetics (the curtains don't fit very well, and the rugs are quite old), is more than compensated by the care and attention given to you by Chandra and her team.

Chandra made us feel extremely welcome, made sure we had plenty of information about where to go, what to do and good places to eat, and she even sorted out our car hire for us when we arrived. Nothing was too much trouble - we just had to ask! Her cooking is excellent - and the write up for her restaurant in the Rough Guide is well deserved.

The Angler Apartments offer an authentic experience of Bajan life. They are modest, but roomy and an exceptionally good value. They are very clean, and everything - from refrigerator, to television, to security safe - works.

Best of all is Chandra Gosain, the extraordinary proprietor, who anticipates needs and goes out of her way to find information and answer questions. Friends who stayed at much more expensive places were much less satisfied than we were.

3.0 stars A friendly, relaxed and low key accommodation in a good location. Visited: August 2003

I found and booked over the internet with no prior recommendation, so it was a bit of a gamble. But it was a gamble that paid off.

Chandra had arranged a taxi (at our request) to pick us up at the airport and with equal, quiet efficiency sorted out a car hire for a couple of days later in our stay.

Our room was as required.. bed, small kitchen and ensuite toilet and shower. It was just a five- minute walk down the hill to a beach with a bit of reef to snorkel over if you wish. It was a ten-minute walk north to the next beach and then you could walk all the way to Holetown without touching a road.

Bus service was cheap - $1.50 north or south. Bridgetown was also easily accessible.

If you are looking for "Hilton" glitz and glamour, this is not for you. But the best recommendation I can give is to say we would stay again next time we are in Barbados.

We had a wonderful stay at the Angler last week.

The gardens were a lovely tranquil place to sip a gin and tonic and watch the birds in the lush trees. The secluded cove beach across the road was very peaceful, sometimes we were the only ones there!

Chandra was very friendly and a good cook. We enjoyed a great curry on our first night here in her Garden Bar restaurant.

The apartment was very clean with all the amenities we needed. The location was great - very handy for buses in both directions, and bars, restaurants and a supermarket were not far away. We will be back!
