4.0 stars It was not bad at all. Visited: July 2008

My wife and I stayed at this resort for two weeks, and found it to be a pleasant surprise.

Needless to say, we were unsure what to expect staying at a resort which was rated for the most part as a three-star. As stated, we were pleasantly surprised.

While the resort was older, it was very clean and the grounds were maintained perfectly.

There was a band (trio) that played in the bar area at least three nights during the week.

We had a studio apartment with a kitchen facing the beach. The kitchen had two burners, a fridge (small), and a sink. There was no microwave in the apartment. However, you can have housekeeping bring one to your room for your stay.

There was also a mini mart on the grounds, and the prices were pretty competitive with market prices.

Best of all, there were no bugs!

My complaints were that the sliding door (wood) was a pain to open. Also, the waves on the beach were too much. They were too overpowering to really spend much time in the water. You do have a real hill to climb if you want to catch a bus into Bridgetown, also.

Our real problem came not with the resort, but with American Airlines which lost all four of our bags - and took four days to return. This seems to be a re-occuring problem with them, as we met a number people who had the same problem. By the way, the resort does not provide necessities if you lose your luggage.

One other thing - be prepared. Barbadso is expensive!

3.0 stars I would go back again and again! Visited: October 2005

Having just returned from a wonderful stay with my now fiance (he proposed on our first night on the beach at sunset - very romantic), I must stress that this resort is a fantastic value for money.

Due to its rating and previous reviews, I was slightly apprehensive about staying her. My apprehensions were totally unwarranted.

The rooms were spotless with maid service that provided clean bedding and towels every day! The food was excellent and not any where near as expensive as implied. Also, the staff was polite, if a bit laid back (but this is the Bajan way of life).

We hired a car (which is a must). You will get lost, as the roads were badly marked - but that's half the fun. If you are looking for a good day out, I highly recommend the Silver Moon catamaran cruise. Snorkeling with turtles was an amazing experience, and the captain and crew were very helpful with first timers.

The Bajan Roots and Rhythm Show was also a must see. Barbados was a beautiful island, and we will definitely be returning to this resort in the future (possibly even for our honeymoon!).

3.0 stars Silver Sands is an excellent value for your money. Visited: July 2004

After reading some of the reviews on this web site prior to my stay at this hotel, I must admit that I was slightly worried about my choice of booking.

My fears were not warranted, though. Silver Sands was a clean, comfortable resort with an excellent beach. As mentioned in other reviews, I agree that this was not a luxury resort, but then I did not pay luxury prices to stay here. My main concern had been that we would be far too isolated from any sort of nighlife and other activites.

However, St. Lawrence Gap was only a 15-minute taxi ride away and had a good choice of restaurants and a lively atmosphere. Please be aware though, that Barbados is not the type of place to find wall-to-wall dance music venues and bars. It's simply not that kind of place. So if that's what you expect, this place is certainly not for you.

We hired a car for a week, and I would recommend you do the same to enable you to view as many of the great attractions as possible. A visit to Harrison's Cave, the Barbados Wildlife Reserve and a catamaran cruise including snorkeling are all a must. Horse-riding as well - if you're feeling brave! Crane Beach was also a must see - absolutely stunning.

Plenty of people appear to have been dismayed by the standard of food and service at this hotel. While the food selection wasn't enormous, it wasn't too expensive and I never found the service to be slow or rude.

While I would definitely go back to Silver Sands and Barbados, I will not be doing so in the near future, simply because there are so many others place I want to see first. I would have no problem recommending Silver Sands, though.

One criticism I have, though, is the amount of hassle from locals trying to sell us various goods. Although, I've yet to find a resort where that hasn't happened!

3.0 stars This is the perfect resort for windsurfers. Visited: January 2004

We spent a week in Silver Sands for the first time. I was quite aware about the place due to the very good hotel internet web site. But staying there made me realize what a perfect place it was for a windsurfer (as I am).

The room I would suggest is the beachfront deluxe studio, which was in a faboulous position on the sea.

Be careful about food, the restaurant was expensive and food was of poor quality. It would be better to go out to St. Lawrence Gap. The service was quite good, and was enough for our needs.

I think I will come again for sure. Silver Sands, the beach and sea were beautiful! We would recommend it to everyone.

4.0 stars It was simply paradise - we can't wait to go back! Visited: November 2003

My boyfriend and I got an excellent deal of £369 per person staying for one week at the Silver Sands, Barbados in November 2003.

If anyone is put off by going on holiday to Barbados in November - don't be! The first day we arrived, we had a tropical storm and the second day was cloudy. After that we had glorious sunshine.

The sun would rise at about 6:00 am, and we were around the pool by 7:00. The sun was really strong in Barbados and I burnt with a factor 12. Even though the winds were strong, you don't realize how fierce the sun can be!

We had a garden suite/apartment and it was very spacious and clean.

Mike's Bar (just around the corner from the hotel) was an excellent value for money. The Bajan Buffet and Barbecue was $33. You can eat as much as you like and the staff was so warm and friendly.

The local Reggae bus was $1.50, which was about 50p and you could stay on as far as Bridgetown.

If there is one trip to go on, then go for 'Bajan Roots and Rhythms'. It worked out for us about £50 each and included Bajan Buffet, Plantation Band and Limbo Dancers. The show was spectacular and all our drinks were included - great night!

The reception and restaurant staff were very rude, but this would certainly not put us off going to this resort again.

3.0 stars We had a well deserved break in a lovely place. Visited: May 2003
Posted by mial
My boyfriend &and I stayed here for a week in May 2003 on our first visit to Barbados.

We had a basic room. It was a reasonable size, the bed was huge, a newly fitted air conditioning system was in place, and our balcony looked right over the pool and beach. It was very clean - I was pleasantly suprised.

The resort was great. It was everything you would need or want for a short, cheap trip away.

The only downside to Silver Sands was the staff. The reception, restaurant and bar staff were all quite rude, despite us being a friendly couple. But please, don't let that put you off. Just accept that as the way it will probably be. Other than that, it was a great place. You'll have a great time.

I went to Silver Sands in May 2002 with my mum. I loved it so much, I went again April 2003 with my mate. I still love this resort, and will go back with my mate again in August of this year. I can't wait.

Everyone is cool, the staff is friendly and the locals are nice and harmless. I have befriended lots of them and look forward to seeing them on my trips back here.

It was, by far, the best holiday I've ever had. It was always very hot, with white sand, stunning views and very helpful staff and locals.

If you ever think of going on holiday - go here. It was brilliant, and the beach side apartments were hug. Also, go on the submarine tri, and try the catamaran cruise around the Grenadines.

3.0 stars It was good for the price with a nice sandy beach, but rough waters. Visited: December 2002
Posted by xwania
We spent three nights here. It's good for the price, but the bathrooms needed upgrading/renovating. Don't book the meal plan, because I found it to be more expensive and not worth it. I cancelled it on my third day there. The main restaurant is okay and The Grill is better.

Make sure you don't use the hotel phone for long distance calls, as an 18-minute call to Toronto at night cost me $25 US. My room had a small fridge and a kitchenette. This is th best place to be if you are an advanced windsurfer, as Club Mistral is on the property. My kitesurfing lesson was a blast. You can boogie board and surf, as well.

5.0 stars This was our best holiday ever! Visited: November 2002
Posted by d_rouse
It was by far the best holiday I've ever been on. The views were beautiful and the beach was gorgeous with white sand and clear waters.

The people in Barbados were the nicest people I've ever met and the staff was so helpful. The rooms were fine for the price, but I would go in a beachfront view next time. There was lots of things to do - like volley ball in the pool; tennis on one of the two courts; or table tennis, which was on the hotel part of the beach.

It was easy to get a bus to Brigetown - the bus stop was only about three minutes away. And you should rent a car from the hotel so you can visit the flower garden which was beautiful.

Also, up the beach a little, there was a rental shack were guests could rent all sorts of surfing stuff. Excursions could be booked from the hotel, and there was a games night, Bajan night and entertainment like that every night in the bar.

I would recommend this holiday to anyone who wants a holiday they'll remember the rest of their life. I know I'll remember mine, and I know I will be returning.

3.0 stars It was well worth staying here. Remember the beach front studios. Visited: September 2002
Posted by buddy_paris
After the long haul flight, the friendly and warm smile given by the front reception staff, really helped us to feel welcome. The many palm trees and flowering plants also made a good first impression.

The beach front studios were large and a perfect place to retreat back after lying on the beach all day. The air conditioner at times made the room a little cold, but it was always nice to know we were able to get out of the heat. The kitchen was well equipped including a large fridge. It was just great to keep our chardonnay nice and cold.

Fortunately, we had one of the studios on the ground level. These had a great patio that opened onto a grass area which led down onto the beach. Although the sea had waves, this didn't make swimming unpleasant. In fact, when we didn't feel like swimmimg in the sea, the hotel pool was perfect. It was large and deep enough to dive into. The shallower side of the pool was great for playing water polo or floating on an air-bed.

The restaurant food was average and we received slow service, but when you are on holiday, who cares? The fish fry buffet was worth a try.

If you don't want to eat in the hotel each night, take a walk about 5 minutes away to Mike's Bar. They do great cocktails and nightly offer a good value on an all-you-can eat buffet. On Friday night, it's a must to go to Oistens for their fish fry. The food, music, local beers and dancing really make a fun night out. Not to mention, the nightly happy hour at the resort bar which makes drinking the local rum punch a real must.

The hotel offered helpful advice on day trips out of the resort and their car rentals were a good value. As the hotel was not on the main tourist drag, a car was handy. But buses and taxis were always on hand.

So, if you need a clean, quiet and friendly place to stay, this is it. We'll certainly stay here again when visiting Barbados.

2.0 stars The hotel grounds and frontage provided stunning views; and the staff was good Visited: September 2002
Posted by katrina
On arrival, the hotel grounds and hotel frontage looked lovely with an ocean view on entering reception. The staff was very welcoming and friendly.

Although the view from our hotel room was stunning, unfortunately this was not the case regarding our room. It was quite clean, but disappointing because the bathroom left a lot to be desired. It could use an upgrading.

The restaurant lacked ambience, and the staff did not appear to be at their best. On the whole, staff was most helpful - as was the security. Although the location was remote, it was very easy to get about by taxi and bus. There was not a lot in the way of entertainment, but it was worth venturing out to other restaurants - especially to St. Lawrence Gap.

It was a lovely location at Silver Sands because it was a reasonable price to stay here and it was probably a good value for our money bearing in mind everything was expensive in Barbados. A bit more thought could be given to some amenities at the resort and this could be a really lovely place to stay.

5.0 stars Silver Sands is a brilliant place to stay. Visited: July 2002

I have been to Silver Sands twice now, and will be returning this July. It is a beautiful place if you are looking for a peacful holiday.

The staff is very helpful, and the rooms are cleaned to a very high standard every day. The nightly entertainment can become tiresome if you intend to stay in the hotel every evening. But with Mike's bar down the road, offering lovely Bajan food, and Oisten's fish fry on Fridays, you couldn't ask for more.

The children are safe to wander, and you can relax by the pool or on the beach. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful holiday in Paradise.

We have now stayed at Silver Sands for eight years running, somethimes twice a year. We have made many friends, love the scenery and the weather. The staff have always been nothing but friendly, polite and helpful. Every year we take back more and more friends who have never visited Barbados before. This year there are 23 of us going.

4.0 stars A relaxing, peaceful and oceanview accommodation. Visited: June 2002
Posted by Nonabu
On arrival, we were made very welcome and taken to our apartment. The room was clean and the kitchen was well equipped.

We had chosen to upgrade to an oceanview apartment and were truly not disappointed. It was one of the best views we had seen. The beach was a bit rough, so we never actually went swimming in the waters but Miami Beach was just a short hop away on the bus, where the water was much calmer and attracted more people as opposed to being the only ones on it.

Location-wise, it was a bit out of the way but once we found our way around, it was no problem. We loved catching the $1.50 reggie bus and it was not to expensive to jump in a taxi at night - especially as we always made sure to agree the price first before entering.

As for nightlife - Friday nights were great at Oistin's -Fish fry, it was a good mix of both locals (very handsome guys) and tourists alike. Oh yeah, and don't forget to try the fish, it goes down well with their local beer 'banks'.

St. Lawrence was a must every night. Also, catching a taxi from the hotel at night was never a problem and if there weren't any, they managed to call one to pick you up.

The Silver Sands had spacious rooms with good sized bathrooms. The staff was friendly and very knowledgeable. They offered free return transfers on most nights which added bonus to local nightlife.

I wouldn't advise going all-inclusive, though. The meals were somewhat monotonous, plus guests get free continental breakfast with accommodation. Our tour operator witheld this information!

We had great sea views with a secluded beach. I would highly recommend staying here-£379 for one week was excellent.

I still prefer to stay either at Silver Sands for relaxing, windsurfing or kiting. Silver Sands, believe it or not, has improved the standards as far as the new beachfront studios are concerned. All other rooms haven't changed much since the early days (I guess). Yes, the people are very friendly but the so called restaurant is quite poor and not worth the money. Breakfast is offered as a buffet but at a low level two for German standards. All you need is your own car to move to St. Lawrence for dinner and drinks. So just use the hotel as homebase for further activities.

3.0 stars Very good for the price. Visited: January 2002

I was slightly concerned about staying here, however, all my worries were alleviated from the moment I arrived at Silver Sands. The lady at reception was very friendly. Once we were escorted to our one bedroom suite that we had booked through Virgin Holidays, we were pleasantly surprised, considering it was only £23.00 per room per night to upgrade. It was by anyone’s standards, large and comfortable. The furnishings were of a very good standard with a large bed plus a single sofa bed in the lounge. It came complete with two bathrooms and two wardrobes. The kitchen was very well equipped, so this would make an ideal choice for a family, as eating out can be very expensive. This is a criticism of restaurants in Barbados generally. There are no good ones, and those that claim to be special, overcharge for very average food. It’s far better to save your money, eat modestly and then treat yourself to a top restaurant in the United Kingdom once you return. Buy the fish, chicken or pork chops from nearby Oisten’s fish fry.

Silver Sands is not for everyone, as it is slightly out of the way and is also not a luxurious resort—but that is reflected in the cost. I would only recommend staying here if you can drive, the money you have saved will cover the cost of a jeep for a week. It is also not a honeymoon resort, unless you are on a tight budget. I have stayed all over the world from five-star hotels to small B&B’s. You will need to do your homework before deciding if this is the place for you, if not, you will only have yourself to blame. The only gripe I had was that the hotel food was very non-descript. One breakfast and dinner was enough for us!

I will definitely be returning to Silver Sands.

We visited the Silver Sands for our honeymoon, and after having a lavish wedding, we were delighted with the peace and quiet that we found at the resort.

There were no screaming kids, the staff was all pleasant, and the studio we had was large and ample for our needs. The food choice in the resort for vegetarians was poor. However, we used to jump on a bus and eat off the resort.

The resort was a bit out of the way, but we were only five minutes away from a bus stop, and the reggie buses will take you anywhere on the island for 1.50 Barbados dollars - it was definitely the way to see the island! We used the buses both day and night and never experienced any problems.

We can honestly say that we had no complaints, in fact we have just booked to return to Silver Sands for our anniversary.

Friendly hotel, but food was expensive. Not much in way of entertainment, but was able to find entertainment elsewhere at low cost 'Ostins' on a Fri/Sat night, Habour lights on Mon.

Beach was very nice, but not private, so you could get hassled a bit. If you like the quiet life then this is the place for you.

Will visit again.
