We have just returned from our stay at the Sugar Cane Club. Whilst we enjoyed our holiday, certain things could have been improved upon.

The room was clean, but the furnishings were a little tatty (peeling paint, worn sofa covers, etc.).

The first night, we went to the on site restaurant. The food was good and fresh, but we were amazed that no one else was eating there. The bar was empty the whole time we were there, too.

In addition, the pool was a good size and was clean. The staff was friendly and attentive. The hotel's minibus service was good for guests without a car.

I would return to this accommodation, but would hire a car for the whole duration of the holiday because it was a little out of the way.
All in all, I would say we had good value for the money we paid.

4.0 stars Sugar Cane is a "home from home" in the sun. Visited: May 2004

We first visited the Sugar Cane Club many years ago. I was in the armed forces with a lad from Barbados, but I could never afford to visit the island until after he had died. We wanted to meet his family, and his wife suggested we get as far North on the island as we could. That put us in the Sugar Cane Club.

We fell in love with the place immediately. The calm, relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, the cozy chalets.

We have been back every year but one since - nine times in all. As a 'thank you' to Delia and her staff, I have recently put together a small brochure giving the holidaymakers' point of view of the place, and posted a copy to the manager, Delia. It was purely a gift to the Sugar Cane Club for all the wonderful holidays we've had there. To us, it's our home from home in the sun

We traveled to Barbados indepedently for the Third Test (Windies vs. England). We booked the Sugar Cane Club not really knowing anything about the place. We were happy to take 'a chance' - after all it was only for a week. We were more than pleasantly surprised.

While the accommodation could be said to be basic - what's wrong with that? It had everything we needed. More importantly, it was very clean and tidy.

Even more important, the service was excellent. Thank you to Delia and her hard working staff. Nothing was ever too much trouble. And Chris, the ever happy bus driver, could not be faulted for not only his driving, but for imparting to us all his knowledge of the wonderful island of Barbados.

Oh! Athose warm nights, laying back in the pool!

To all of you who read this review....visit Barbados, and visit the Sugar Cane Club. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

3.0 stars Sugar Cane Club was outstanding. Visited: October 2003

Sugar Cane was in a lovely setting, with great people. Sugar Cane Club was indeed set a little out of the way, but not too far that a short taxi ride or a pleasant walk will get you to the beach.

Delia (manageress) and her staff were some of the friendliest people you will hope to meet and made us very welcome. Sure, the service was a little slow, but that only added to the character of the place.

We went in October and almost felt that we had the place to ourselves at times. We cannot recommend it highly enough. See you there!

A big thank you to Mrs. Webster and her staff, espcially Raquel and Keith. We had a great time at the Sugar Cane Club.

The cottage we stayed in was clean, tidy and well equipped, but a little tired. The sevice was excellent, but Bajan (slow), this was never a problem once we slowed down ourselves.

Being term time when we arrived, we pretty much had the pool to ourselves for the first week. It was ideal just to relax. The views were great, and the sunset shots from the bar were a must.

If you want nighttime entertainment a walk away this is not for you. But as a tranquil and beautiful base, it is ideal. We are breaking our rules of not going to the same place twice and returning next year. Enjoy the Sugar Cane Club - we did.

3.0 stars A relaxed and quiet atmosphere. Visited: July 2003

Do not believe the poor reviews on this site. I was worried when I read them before we got to the hotel, but with no need for alarm.

It was true that food service took a long time, and it was also true that the rooms were a little tired. But the staff was charming. Yes they were relaxed, but hey, "have a nice day" service would just be too in your face here.

The peace and quiet made everyone who was here very friendly. It was an ideal place to wind down and we had a great time. There was always plenty of room around (and in) the pool.

It was just a bit of a shame that the bar wasn't more of a social hub.

Chris, the shuttle driver, was a special star. Follow his recommendations. For nights out, Mangos and Fish Pot were very good. For more simple fare, Doris' Place was great (especially the karaoke on a Friday night).

We had a great time. I hope you do, too.

2.0 stars A good tranquil base from which to explore Barbados. Visited: March 2003

About five years ago I would have imagined the Sugar Cane Club to be a wonderful idyllic place to stay. It still is in many respects, but it is now on the tatty side.

Whilst we were there, we were moved to a different room because the bathroom ceiling leaked noisily onto the tin bath day and night, the toilet didn't work, and there was a plastic spoon used to wedge the window shut on a ground floor room!

However, our complaints were dealt with swiftly, efficiently and the room we moved to was much better (if a little tired round the edges). Importantly the towels and bed linen were always fresh, clean and changed regularly. The maids did the basics, but no more.

After waiting for over three hours for our meal at the hotel bar to be told that we should have ordered earlier because it takes a long time to cook Lasagna (despite the fact that a microwave oven could be heard constantly 'pinging' in the background) we never ate there again. It wasn't helped by the fact that the waitress was incredibly surly.

Anyone who has been to Barbados will know that the whole island is surprisingly rundown?colorful, exciting, interesting, but still rundown. Despite any issues we had we enjoyed our stay in Barbados and at the Sugar Cane Club enormously. The Bajans are incredibly friendly and totally made our stay there a pleasure.

My advice would be to hire a car to explore the beautiful East of the island, make sure you go snorkeling at least once, and definitely get up early to see the monkeys! The world's too small a place, and life's too short to go the same country twice so we won't be returning, but I can assure anyone following in our footsteps will have a truly memorable holiday.

This place was not the Ritz, but not the pits either. The staff was Bajan which meant they were not as fast as you and I, but they were lovely, and would do anything for you (at their pace).

It was an ideal base to explore but come home to peace and quiet. We had a wonderful holiday here. The bar closed at 10.00.p.m. at night, but if you have a word with the bar staff they will leave the drinks in the fridge for you!

The rooms were reasonable, the grounds were excellent, Barbados and its people were fantastic. You have to get up early to see the monkeys, but they were there.

We had no problems at the Sugar Cane. Delia and all of her staff were brilliant, so freindly and warm, providing clean towels for the beach and pool, which by the way, was cleaned every day.

The gardens were maintained every day, the rooms cleaned every day, there was security at night which - to be honest - did not seem needed. Order food early, it did take a while to get it, but hey, you're in Barbados.

Get on the free mini bus and go to Moon Town if you want to see how the locals live. The music and the people were fantastic, it was the cheapest beer we could find and the local policeman even got us a lift home! The food was cheap and fresh, and my husband Colin was the only white man to sing in Moon Town on the Karaoke.

We made many friends here and we will be back!

3.0 stars It was nice, quiet, and off of the beaten path. Visited: January 2003

This hotel was on the extreme north of the island. It was in a beautiful location, but far enough away from everything to be somewhat of a bother.

On the other hand, the price was right, and we got to experience a real Bajan experience. Although the people were not overly friendly, and were not walking around with a smile on their faces, I found them to be consistent with much of the hospitality industry throughout the region, and for that reason I was not disappointed.

The room was nice, although not five star. It was clean, and there was plenty of room. The A/C was token operated, and at first I was concerned about this, but did not even need the A/C at all. (I bought a token the first night, and traded it in the next day for lunch.)

The bus service was very good, very friendly, and they went out of their way to help in every way.

A twenty minute drive will take you down the west coast of Barbados, and you can get plenty to eat, see great beaches, and fantastic sunsets there.

The price for this hotel was very reasonable, and if peace and quiet is your concern, then this could be the place for you.

I would recommend this hotel, and would return to it again.

3.0 stars A great place to unwind! Visited: November 2002

We were very happy with the service we received. The staff was friendly and always willing to please.

Also, the bus service was excellent.

This was a great place to stay if you just want to watch the world go by and enjoy listening to the birds singing and the crickets in concert. If you want to get away from it all, and want to unwind and take things at a slower pace - this is the place to be.

We definitely would come again just to see the monkeys!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Delia Webster and her staff for a wonderful holiday. Our rooms were kept spotless, the food was good and plentiful (so were the pina coladas!).

The staff was very friendly and they went out of their way to ensure we had a great time. We hope to return again sometime next year for a longer stay.

2.0 stars Staff Attitudes Visited: July 2002
Posted by katie_barton
I have just returned from my stay at the Sugar Cane Club and I can honestly say that I would not recommend the place! The staff's attitudes were incredible. They were so rude and VERY laid back! (Too laid back for my liking.) The girls and I were made to feel like we were in the wrong if we asked for something, ie. breakfast menus - well the looks we received were unbelievable!

You find there are extra charges on top of everything you order - infact 15% is what they charge, and to be honest I don't think the staff deserve tips, they aren't friendly and just plain rude!

The apartments are cleaned on a daily basis and can not grumble at the maid service.

Sugar Cane provides a bus service and I think this was the only thing that was helpful and friendly!

If you want a basic hotel - this is the place, but if you want to be made to feel welcome it is not!

Be prepared to take your own butter to the restaurant as there will be an EXTRA cost if you want more than one pack for 2 slices of toast - JOKE!!

There is plenty more I could probably say, but I'm just glad that I had great company whilst on holiday and that's what made it - certainly NOT the STAFF!!

1.0 stars Being robbed while at the Sugar Cane Club ruined our stay Visited: April 2002
Posted by RachGerard
My husband and I just returned home from our third visit to the Sugar Cane Club. Unfortunately, this will be our last stay there. About a week into our stay we were robbed while we were inside our room. At about 8:oo p.m. I was washing my face in the bathroom while my husband was in the shower. I noticed the reflection of a man in the mirror. I screamed, but it was too late. He took our wallet and climbed back through the window. He made off with several hundred dollars and both our licenses. We immediately contacted the office and the security guard who was watching T.V. at the bar when it happened. The police were called but were of no help. The next day the manager Delia Webster did not believe us when we told her about the robbery and actually accused us of trying to pull some kind of insurance scam. When I asked her if she could not charge us for the nights stay when we were robbed, she refused and said that it is not the hotels responsibility. We owed her all the money for our entire stay. We no longer felt safe staying here and decided that we would have to leave so we could try and enjoy our last three days on the island.

I want everybody to know that we feel we were set up for this robbery. We think it was done by someone who works at the hotel. The entire time we were there a security guard was always inside of the restaurant at the bar, instead of patrolling the area where the guests stay. Choose another place to stay so this horrible experience doesn't happen to you!

Sugar Cane Club Management response:
Rachel and Gerard indeed claimed a robbery took place at 7pm by an intruder that jumped out of a window (when their door was wide open?). There are several discrepancies about their claim 1) Mrs. Webster was at their door within 10 minutes of their claim (not next day) as well as the Police (which they did not want called) and the Security Guard NEVER watches T.V. What they didn't mention is that on a previous visit, they refused to pay for their telephone bill and on their first visit they refused to pay the winter rate and only paid the summer rate (although they were given the proper rate quote in advance).

Rachel and Gerard are known and remembered at Sugar Cane Club and although we welcome all kinds of people, we are protected by The Proprietors Act: Safety Boxes are offered at the reception for guests valuables - the Hotel is not responsible for lost or stolen cash, or articles of value from your Hotel Room when these are not placed in the safety boxes. This Act applies to ALL HOTELS on the island. Also, Rachel and Gerard's lone friend on the island, which they insisted on calling when they claimed to have been robbed is well known for questionable enterprises. After investigating their claim with the Police, we were prepared when they demanded that their bill be discounted (as they were booked to leave the following day not in several days as they claim), they were moved that night from the apartment they had to an upstairs one. They left without paying a balance outstanding which included overseas calls made before the claimed incident.

Sincerely, Delia Webster, Manager

4.0 stars Sugar Cane is small and friendly. Visited: March 2002

We have stayed at the Sugar Cane Club for four years in a row. We simply can't find anywhere else to match it. It is an ideal place for relaxing in a peaceful and idyllic setting.

The staff have always been friendly and helpful. However, don`t expect a fast service, as they operate at a pace suitable to the climate. We always meet regular guests - some of whom have been coming for up to 18 years.

Rooms are basic but clean, and have wonderful views. The swimming pool has always been clean and is rarely crowded.

Safe deposit boxes are also available for a small fee. We have never felt threatened or unsafe on the island and while nowhere in the world can be guaranteed to be crime free, Barbados has to be one of the best islands in the Caribbean.

4.0 stars A superb value for a super location. Visited: March 2002

The Sugar Cane Club is a relaxing breezy retreat away from the busy island hotels affording tranquil settings and great hospitality.

If you want a peaceful, no-frills holiday and are not bothered about in-house evening entertainment, this is the place to be. The self-catering rooms are ideal for back-to-basic, clean living and the service is efficient and discreet.

The manageress, Delia Webster, is a mind of information and nothing is too much trouble if you need her help.

Travel to the rest of the island is very easy and there are plenty of supermarkets within a courtesy bus ride.

A great place to be!

4.0 stars It was excellent! Visited: January 2002

I am regular visitor to Barbados, as I have been coming here for several years, sometimes twice a year. One of my first vacations here, I stayed at the Sugar Cane Club Hotel, and absolutely loved it. It was one of the best places to stay for affordability, comfort and relaxation. Because I return here almost every year, I have gotten to know the members of staff and the manager, Mrs. Delia Webster, quite well.

Never while staying here have I ever felt unsafe in any way. The hotel is partially surrounded by a deep valley of lush vegetation, which prevents anyone from entering from the rear of the hotel, except for the monkeys of course! There is only one entrance to the hotel and that is set back quite a way from the main road, so it is nice and peaceful.

Since the hotel is not on the beach, there is never a problem with vendors and or beach bums. I have often walked to and from the beach late at night without feeling threatened in the slightest.

As for the staff, the majority of the staff has been here for years. They are always friendly and quick to help, and some of them even remember my name each time I come!

As for Delia, she is absolutely lovely, is very personable and always takes the time to help us with any problems we might have. I am actually planning my next trip here this Christmas and am looking forward to it very much. I recommend it to anyone looking for a bit of peace and quiet in a small slice of heaven!
