We spent a very nice week in Barbados and the resort was pretty much like we expected
and did not encounter many surprises. The quality of the staff was mixed at best. Some
were professional and courteous while others did not show any interest in making you feel
welcomed. The resort was very clean inside and out except for the beach chairs and
umbrellas that really needed to be replaced and additionnal quantities needed to be made
available. Our room was in the new wing as we requested, but the loud live music coming
from the bar area at night will definitely keep you awake until it ends at around midnight.
If you want quiet, you need to stay in the older wing which certainly looked just as clean
and well maintained. The daily room maintenance was impeccable.

As for the food and drinks: The variety of drinks was average and the staff could not
improvise anything else than what was on their list. The food was quite good on most
occasions. Variety and attention to detail was excellent in the presentation of the plates at
lunch and dinner, but you must not expect generous servings. The breakfast buffet was
well bellow the expected level of quality and variety for this class of resort. Also, don't
forget that you must book lunch and dinner for that day in the morning. There was only
one restaurant on site.

During our stay, about 95% of the guests were British and we certainly enjoyed the level
of civilism that was displayed by all. You really need to "reserve" a beach chair early in the
morning if you want one at all. The administration should certainly look into correcting
this situation by simply adding more furniture for the guests. Holetown was only a few
steps away from the resort. Having stayed at all-inclusive resorts before, it is my opinion
that the level of overall quality displayed by Mango Bay falls one or two stars behind many
others, which is pretty much what we expected. After all, you get what you pay for.

4.0 stars Very, very nice. Visited: December 2000

This place is nice, the food was excellent and the staff were attentive. My only advice is to request a room in the new section; the older section was not quite up to par. I did not encounter any of the problems that were mentioned in other reviews. I did meet a number of folks who had been there on more than one occasion and plan on returning again. I would recommend this place to a friend in a heartbeat.

4.0 stars Totally enjoyable; a true island vacation! Visited: November 2000

This was my third trip to Barbados, with the last one being in 1988, and the island has changed a bit. This was my first time on the West Coast and staying at an all-inclusive resort. I was thoroughly pleased with everything. The resort staff were very nice, the accommodations were great, and the food was excellent. I feel you can't beat the value we received here. I'd definitely stay here again.

2.0 stars This resort was a very big disappointment. Visited: November 2000

My wife and I and another couple recently returned from a stay at Mango Bay. From the descriptions I had read as well as the other Traveler Reviews, I expected something pleasant, attractive and well run. And while accommodations in Barbados are notoriously overpriced, we still expected someplace nice for a low season rate of well over $300 U.S. per night.

What we encountered was a major disappointment. The resort was small, tired, and poorly maintained. While we were not expecting fancy, we also were not able to equate the whitish slime continuously running out the back door of the kitchen area and down the sidewalk, or the odor of raw sewage that continually seemed present in front of, and sometimes in, the reception area, to quaint.

The facilities such as the pools, bar, and restaurant were all minimal, and the restaurant fare was, at best, mediocre compared to that of the many fine small restaurants within short walking distance.

Lest you think I am simply a malcontent, I will say that the rooms were clean and acceptable, and the staff, while not particularly motivated, were both friendly and helpful.

In conclusion, I would suggest avoiding the Mango Bay. In recent years we have stayed on every major island in the Windwards, and without exception, every experience was more pleasant and less costly than this one.

4.0 stars A Caribbean delight! Visited: August 2000

My wife Helen, my son Henry and I stayed two weeks at Mango Bay. It’s located in an excellent part of St. James—near Holetown! We had a very pleasant room on the ground floor with a garden view.

I spent time talking with the chef who was genuinely keen to discuss what customers think of his food. He was trained in Europe and likes creating new dishes, using fresh ingredients. We thought the food was of a high standard.

The staff were enthusiastic and motivated. (Cheers to Troy and others!) There were plenty of water sports and a special thanks to Melvin for teaching our Henry how to ski. Henry also had a great surf at Soupbowl at Bathsheba. The water was clear and calm—fabulous!

All in all, we had a very enjoyable holiday. We highly recommend this resort.

4.0 stars Great beach, bar and restaurant - what more do you need... Visited: July 2000

I love Barbados and I loved Mango Bay, with a few reservations (no pun intended). This July was our fifth visit to Barbados and our first at Mango Bay.

The Mango Bay facilities were great; they had a very nice pool, the restaurant fair was fine (great coffee), and the staff were very friendly and courteous. They could use a few more chairs on the beach, but if you got out early enough, it wasn't hard to "reserve" a seat with the blue beach towels the hotel provided.

We went with two children and their grandmother and like other reviewers, we found that there weren't a lot of other kids. Still, we felt quite welcome for the most part.

There were plenty of other friendly guests at Mango Bay but the ones who stared at us really made dining and other occasions very unpleasant.

I want to stress that Mango Bay and its facilities were great. The water was clear and smooth, the beach was clean and the staff were wonderful. They had plenty of activities like snorkeling trips and boat rides and of course, you could just hang out on the beach or at the pool. They even had kayaks and a small "sunfish" if you're into sailing.

I won't hesitate to stay at Mango Bay on my next visit to Barbados. Highly recommended.

We were here for 2 weeks. We had a lovely and relaxing time. The bar staff were particularly helpful and the food was of an excellent standard. The resort was just right, lovely and peaceful but easy to meet and mingle with other guests. The beach was lovely and the sea so clear!! A good level of water sports were also provided.

On our first night there was a kareoke nearby that was extremely loud but this only happens once a week. The other days we were not disturbed at all.

Good value for the money in a really peaceful lazy environment. Not many children here but it would be good to have a no kids rule!

4.0 stars Perfect spot for a relaxing holiday-minor inconveniences Visited: June 2000

We took a group of 16 (5 families) to Mango Bay. The hotel was as nice or nicer than we had hoped for. Some of us had two children in our rooms and were surprised to find we had two-room suites (twin beds were placed in the sitting area for the kids) so the grown-ups still had some privacy. Even the couples traveling with us had the two room suites (with a king size bed). I don't know if this was standard, but if so they should advertise it more as it was a real bonus. The rooms were especially clean and decorated nicely - large bathrooms and closet space.

For our group, it was wonderful that the resort was not large and rambling. The rooms, dining room, bar, pool and main office were all only a few steps from the beachfront. The beach was not wide, but large enough and you did need to be up early to reserve chairs. The water was nice but getting in in front of the hotel was a little rough on the feet (small pebbles rolling underfoot) and just a little ways up on the right it was much easier.

Our only real complaint was with the water sports program. A lot of the equipment (all of the paddle boats) were not in working order and there was not really enough snorkeling equipment for everyone in our group - though we had called ahead and asked to make sure there was. I would take my own snorkel and mask because the water sports manager did get quite angry with us for not returning equipment before 4:00 pm, when there was still lots of good snorkeling time left. (We had actually gotten permission to keep the equipment longer, but this guy didn't care.)

Although the resort allows children, there were not many here (less than 10) and I felt that some of the other guests felt like they were an intrusion, even though they were very well-behaved. The kids even felt it, and received some disapproving looks when they laughed and played in the pool.

The food was quite good, especially the yummy soups. The folks at the bar were great with our kids and mixed up a ton of fruit punches during our week stay!

Most of the staff were extremely helpful and kind and they went out of their way to accommodate our group.

Visiting the rest of the island and some other beaches was a lot of fun and the north point was breathtaking. Some traveling vendors, but we thought they added to the fun, especially Champagne Charlie with his jewelry and Linda the hair-braiding lady!

I would definitely recommend this resort and would be more than happy to return here for a vacation anytime!

2.0 stars Excuse me! I thought I was on vacation. Visited: June 2000

My fiance and I have visited a different Caribbean resort for each of the past ten years. Never have we been required to make meal reservations each morning for that entire day. I'm sorry, but when on vacation we normally eat when we're ready.

We also needed to dress up, as beach attire was not allowed. My wardrobe consisted of casual dress shorts for each of eight days along with one pair of dress slacks. I wore the dress slacks each night in order to eat.

The food was unlike any other all-inclusive we have ever experienced, the portions were very small.

Nightly entertainment consisted of musicians playing and singing American songs. Again, I'm sorry, but we went to Barbados to hear perhaps steel drums or other local island artists. I could have remained at home to hear Elvis.

Several excursions which were included by the resort as part of our all-inclusive package were fully booked days in advance, most of which were offered only one day per week.

Overall, it was the least enjoyable Caribbean vacation we've taken. The island was very nice but the resort did not do it for us.

4.0 stars The most welcoming, hospitable resort you can find Visited: April 2000

I started going to Mango Bay about 6 years ago, going every year at least once, somtimes twice a year for 3 weeks. (No I am not rich, just know a good thing when I see it.)

THE HOTEL: The hotel is pleasantly decorated, not fancy or plain, just very comfortable for you to put your feet up.

THE STAFF: Peter, who operates this home away from home, makes you feel so very welcomed. He has a night where he personally welcomes the guests and meets them individually. Although I haven't seen him dance, I am sure he can "get down" with the rest of the staff. The staff are remakably talented with Marcas (guest relations) singing up a storm (my favorite is "Who Let The Dogs Out" when the song first came out). The other staff, although somewhat more intraverted, can also sing and dance to make the festive mood continue. They were always pleasant and very helpful, going out of their way on several occasions. Bless all the great staff, without them it would be just another vacation.

LOCATION: Hole Town, west coast. Lots of shops, restaurants, night clubs. One of my favorites is the rum bar just outside of the hotel, drinks are very cheap, and the Kareoke is excellent.

FOOD: I haven't found a dish I did not like, although if it was not what I expected they quickly made it to my liking. Who can say more, it's just that good.

ROOMS: very nicely decorated. Beds and pillows were comfortable. Going to sleep listening to the waves or the music is very soothing.

We enjoyed a wonderful holiday at Mango Bay. The people were so helpful and friendly, and the food was excellent. The "Old Years Night" celebration was nearly as good as Scotland's. The noise from the TML Bar was only a bother one night, and was a small price to pay for the pleasure of staying at this resort. We cant wait to repeat our visit.

My husband and I were traveling for the first time with our 4-month-old daughter and were not sure just what to expect. The staff were so wonderful to our daughter - they treated her like royalty. Everyone, including the babysitter who was arranged for us, was terrific. The food, bar, pool and sun were outstanding. We plan to return next year!
