3.0 stars We had a memorable holiday at Club Rockley. Visited: May 2003
Posted by prebs
We have just returned from a two-week holiday at Club Rockley. This was my eighth visit to this hotel. We can honestly say that we have never had a bad time here.

The staff has always been very helpful and courteous at all times. We have met some lovely people from England - Pene and Les, Elaine and Derek, and Bett. We have all stayed at Club Rockley over the last eight years and have become very good friends.

We have seen the changes over the years, but we would still reccommend people to stay here. The staff is brilliant - they cannot do enough for us. A special mention to Anthony, Toni and Chester at guest services; Janice, Victor, Marlene and Hyacynth in reception. The holiday would not be the same without them.

4.0 stars A beautiful, relaxing resort and beach club. Visited: March 2003

We stayed at Club Rockley in March/April 2003 and can only give praise to the staff, accommodation, facilities, food and weather. In fact, everything about Barbados was an absolute pleasure, and an experience we will never forget.

We completely recommend anyone to this resort which was set amongst a beautiful golf course and gardens and was a short bus ride away from the beach. The shuttle bus service from the hotel was both regular and prompt.

Do try to visit St. Lawrence Gap and Oistin's on Friday evening for the real taste of Barbados night life!

Anyone booking this holiday is in for a treat and a half.

4.0 stars A lovely resort, with friendly staff and a great beach club. Visited: March 2003

My husband and I have just returned from a two-week holiday at Club Rockley and had a fantastic time. Having read some of the reviews on this site before we left, I was a little apprehensive. But we needn't have worried - it was lovely.

The rooms had comfortable beds, air conditioning and television. They were tastefully furnished, clean and tidy.

The food was lovely and the staff was friendly and helpful.
I was also concerned that the resort was not next to the beach, but again I needn't have worried. There was a bus which ran to and from the beach regularly. The beach also had a lovely bar and restaurant. The beach itself was beautiful.

We had a fantastic time and would definitely return.

3.0 stars Club Rockley offers a good value and great food. Visited: February 2003

My husband, 13-year-old son and I stayed at Club Rockley in February. The food was excellent and the room was nice. We booked our trip through Tradewind tours and were very pleased. They gave us advice on what tours to go on. I think I would return to Club Rockley for the value alone. Barbados was a beautiful island and it was relatively safe. We really did not spend all our time in resort, but enjoyed exploring the island.

The Orange Hill rooms were lovely. There was a sense of peaceful space about the whole property which is rare in today's world.

The golf club was also great. It was a wonderful beach club with decent food in all the restaurants. It was my kind of place, and I will return to this paradise as soon as possible!

3.0 stars Excellent staff, good food, and a great beach. Visited: August 2002

My husband, eight-year-old twins and I have just returned from 12 nights at Club Rockley and are desperate to get back there!

The staff was brilliant, with a good sense of humor and always more than happy to help. We had to move rooms halfway through our stay, which at the time, in sweltering heat was a pain. But we were given a better room and a bottle of champagne to welcome us to our new room.

We cannot complain about the food having put on half a stone in 12 days. The kids loved the experience of being able to order drinks and food for themselves with kind waiters to help them.

Also, the beach was breathtaking. The hotel ran a shuttle every 30 minutes there and back and also a daily shuttle into Bridgetown.

We are in the process of booking again, but not through a travel agent. We will try to book direct.

4.0 stars This was a top class holiday! Visited: June 2002

Although we've been to Club Rockley a couple of times before, we were nervous after reading previous reviews. We didn't need to worry as - although there were changes going on at the hotel - it was still a fantastic resort with the best beach bar on the island!

There were definitely some problems here with perhaps some staff unsure of their future jobs, but they went out of the way to help. Put in a bit of effort yourself to get into the Bajan way, and you'll have a great time.

I would recommend you opt for the hillside rooms, as it seemed the others were long due some renovating, but Barbados isn't a place where you should be in your room all day!

The food was okay, with a good selection (particularly at the beach bar-although I don't agree that a supplement should be paid here).

The resort did lack kids' facilities, though. And with the space available, more effort should be put in. At our visit, the babysitting was withdrawn so I would say it wasn't child-friendly facility, but the staff made up for it as they went out of their way to make a fuss.

Guest services also offered lots of interesting trips and services-use them. Special mention to the cleaning and maintenance staff. The rooms were spotlessly cleaned daily, and originally we had a water shortage problem, but it was resolved without hassle.

A poor mark would be given for the entertainment. The groups at night were not very good! Also, they hardly played any local music around the complex and this would have added to the atmosphere of the holiday.

If you play golf (which I don't) you've got the extra bonus facilities and the grounds were kept very tidy. Go with a positive, open mind and enjoy!

3.0 stars We would definitely go back! Visited: May 2002

The staff at Club Rockley was absolutely fantastic (as are most Bajans).

Our room was great, and cleaned to perfection every day. The decor was fine (but to be honest, I didn't go to Barbados to sit in my room and look if there were chips in the paint etc). By some comments from other guests we did realize that some rooms were in need of modernization - but this was being carried out when we were there (which didn't cause a problem). A couple we met asked to change their room because it wasn't suitable for their 18-month old child and they were happily shown three other rooms to choose from.

The food was great. My only gripe would be that there should be a "take away" where we could have gotten the children food as and when they wanted it. The staff in the kids club was great.

I would go back to Club Rockley, but not with the children (but that's a personal preference!).

4.0 stars We went to have a good time - and did! Visited: March 2002

This was our second trip to Club Rockley in two years. We are golfers and a holiday would not be a holiday without being able to play.

We were able to play every day if we wanted, and it was a very challenging course. I will agree with some of the other reviews, that the overall upkeep needed a little work, but anyone could find fault with any place if they looked hard enough.

The staff was excellent, and went out of their way to make each day special. We had one problem with the dress code, and not being able to wear our cowboy hats in the bar at night, but we fixed that - or a least the cowboy did! And I heard the rules have changed.

The food and the drinks were good, and the nightly entertainment was great.
The beach was beautiful, and the bartenders at the beach bar could not have been better.

We went with the idea of having fun, and that was what we had, 14 days that left us in bad need of a rest. If you get the chance, spend a day on the Tiami catamaran, it was the best money we spent and a day we will never forget. The Triple Crown horse race was also a lot of fun.

To all the staff, we count the days until we can return and we appreciate you playing "Leaving on a Jet Plane" the morning we headed out, but my Island song will always be the one about coming back to the island.

Also, go back to the rum for a prize for the golf tournament - the rum bunch needs to stay in Barbados!

1.0 stars We were so disappointed Visited: February 2002
Posted by dwcoolit
I know we only stayed here 24 hours but that was more than enouogh. We had booked with Airtours and payed an arm and a leg for 2 weeks at Rockley.

As soon as we pulled up at reception we knew that a lot of the previous reports were going to be right.

The reception area is badly in need of updating. We were asked to sit out by the main pool until our room was ready, just looking around the pool area our hearts sunk again, the pool tiles were chipped and dirty and the bar and restaurant area was just as bad.

When we did get taken to our suite (their words) it was in a small cluster of apartments which would have looked more at home in Warsaw. There was only air conditioning in the bedroom, all the furniture was chipped, and the kitchen area looked like the appliances were bought in the sixties. I understand the reasons for bars at the windows in some parts of the world, but why should they have to be rusty?

When I rang reception to complain about the standard of the room and to get it changed the receptionist seemed shocked because apparantly this was one of their updated rooms (I e-mailed ahead of arrival to make sure we got a good room).

We waited until the Airtours welcome meeting the next morning and begged the rep to get us out, or if not, home.

We were so disappointed with this resort and would only grade it no more than 2 stars at best.

We found Club Rockley to be a very warm and friendly complex, where all the staff couldn't do enough to please.

The accomodation was basic, but very adequate for what we needed. The food and entertainment were both excellent.

We will be returning for our 3rd visit in 2003.

4.0 stars Really excellent holiday. "You get what you pay for." Visited: October 2001

We just returned to the United Kingdom today after 10 days at Club Rockley. We found the rooms clean and tidy but in need of maintenance and a good coat of paint! The food on the whole was reasonable with a good choice every night in Cloud Nine.

The staff was excellent—always willing to help and nothing was too much trouble. The nightly shows ranged from brilliant (Syndikyt) to rotten fruit throwing kind. (Cannot remember the name of it, but the performers looked like out-of-work, middle-aged hippies.)

One thing that we did not like was that the dress code in the evening was not enforced so you had people that had been on the beach all day eating in stained/sandy clothes. Self pride costs nothing.

We will be going back!

3.0 stars An enjoyable, but could have been better, holiday. Visited: September 2001

My husband, 3-year-old daughter and I just returned from a 2-week stay at Club Rockley. Upon arrival, we were taken by the shuttle car to Moonshine, which is 1 of the 7 clusters of apartments within the complex. It was nice that we had a swimming pool right on our doorstep and during the day it was quiet and relaxing (just what we wanted).

We didnt visit the new Orange Hill cluster, as it seemed to be full of rowdy groups (we could hear from our cluster). Our pool seemed to be one of the cleanest and after a child decided to go to the toilet in it (twice I might add) it was drained and cleaned very quickly!

We felt the kids’ club left a lot to be desired; it was just a room on the side of the hotel. If your child is under 7 there is not much for them there. I feel they should have a small outside area where the children can play and not be stuck inside. The staff in the kids’ club was friendly and seemed to fall in love with our daughter, so that helped. Our daughter wanted to go there every evening.

With regards to the staff, as other customers have mentioned they ranged from downright miserable to the most friendly and helpful.

Our room was large and air conditioned in the bedroom our daughter had a camp bed in the living room area. There was a TV and a kitchen, but the apartments were in need of a coat of paint—yet clean and livable. It is not just a hotel, people own the apartments here and some are timeshares!

The food was good in the golf club, Out of Bounds, where you can get spaghetti Bolognese, toasted sandwiches etc., however, we found the food repetitive and not as good in the main Cloud Nine restaurant. We also found that if we had a meal after the first sitting we had to ask for the table to be cleared or get up and ask for a missing piece of cutlery or a drink (nearly every day).

Entertainment was not great, except for one good duo (Wayne) and a good floor show. Otherwise, it was nothing spectacular and there’s nothing else to do in an evening but watch the entertainment.

The golf club and green is very good. (They charge $57.00 for club hire, balls, tees and cart.) There’s a beach party held every Tuesday (reservations required)with a meal and games on the beach. The a la carte menu had good food, but there was not enough of it!

An enjoyable, but could have been better, holiday. We recommend it for those who don’t want to do much but chill out and enjoy the sunshine.

3.0 stars It's only the golf that must make people return Visited: February 2001

We returned yesterday from our stay at Club "broccoli" - once you have experienced the under-cooked vegetables you will know just what I'm talking about!

Our room (next to the main reception) was spacious but a bit tatty in places - that part of the complex was due for a well deserved renovation program shortly - hope they extend it to the beach club. However, it was clean and adequate for the two of us but a kettle and hairdryer would have been most appreciated (as well as a crow bar to open the dressing table drawers).

The reception area gave a bad impression of the resort and resembled a breeze block garage and upon arrival my heart sank.

The staff came in various disguises - down right rude at one end of the scale (especially in the beach club) right up to wonderfully kind and welcoming (Steven deserves a floor show all of his own).

The entertainment was really good but the food was nothing to write home about (the menu in the 'a la carte' never changed and the atmosphere resembled a funeral parlor).

We enjoyed the break but even the golf won't entice us to return again unless the recent change of management brings about radical changes and brings the resort up the 4-star rating that it is advertised as.

4.0 stars Looking Forward to our fifth visit Visited: January 2001

My wife and I have holidayed at Rockley on four occasions, Barbados being our perfect destination and a Club Rockley suite being our need and requirement.

On arrival you are greeted at reception with a refreshing fruit punch and a willing staff. The journey to your accommodation gives you a glimpse of the beautifully maintained grounds and golf course. We have always stayed in Studio "B" apartments, which are spotlessly clean with fresh towels daily. The kitchen is very basic, but we have never needed to use it, as it is all-inclusive we are not there to cook. The bathrooms are always clean but could do with upgrading.

With regard to the staff, many have become friends over the years and we can honestly say that we can only sing their praises for the way they conduct themselves. Nothing seems to be too much trouble, but I have noticed guests whose behavior and expectations are quite staggering; it makes me wonder what the Bajans think of us!

The food overall is most satisfactory with plenty of choices of where and what to eat. The menu varies daily at the Cloud Nine restaurant with a help-yourself buffet and the a la carte is a very quiet and relaxed affair in which children are not allowed, which I totally agree with.

For the sun seekers "Sugar Reef" beach is one of the better ones on the island with your own restaurant and bar serving you all day. What more do you want? But a day around the cluster pool next to your accommodation is most enjoyable.

Our overall opinion is that we have visited most of the other resorts and feel that Rockley for us is the best all-around inclusive complex. We have been in the catering and leisure industry for over 25 years and are reasonably qualified to make a fair judgment.

5.0 stars Excellent - We'll be back Visited: January 2001

My wife and I had one of the Orange Hill rooms, right next to the pool and overlooking the golf course. Fantastic.

We had a pleasant 5-minute walk to the main reception area where we could catch the regular shuttle to the beach—no worries. The staff was very nice and helpful. (Apart from one who was a bit grumpy on our arrival day; he had a hangover from the previous night’s party.)

There’s lovely food in the air-conditioned a-la-carte restaurant. The beach club food was also very good indeed, we booked all our evening meals on arrival and spread them between the a la carte and the beach club. (They fill up quickly.) Donna was always happy to help and looked after us throughout our stay. We will be back.

5.0 stars The best 2-weeks of my life! Visited: January 2001

After 2 weeks of being back in sunless England, I am still on my come down from the best two weeks of my life!

I couldn't have pictured a better holiday! The staff were friendly and helpful and by the end of the two weeks, we had made very good friends with them all. The food was extremely good, and plenty of it!

The hotel's beach Suger Reef was spectacular! The white sand beach was immaculately clean and breathtakingly beautiful. The free catamaran trips would take you out to the man-made coral gardens where you could view the spectacular water life including turtles.

The reason for my trip was for my sister's wedding, which went well. We made such good friends with the staff that many of them attended the wedding. I went with a group of 22 which included a baby of 19 months and nothing went wrong.

I would recommend Club Rockley as the best holiday experience in the world.

P.S. Have fun on the golf course!

My wife and I have just returned from Club Rockley where we celebrated our silver wedding anniversary. We had previously read the reviews submitted by other holiday goers and were a bit apprehensive about what to expect upon our arrival. We needn't have been.

The accommodation (in the main complex) was excellent as I think we had been given a suite, which had recently been renovated. The staff were very friendly and went out of their way to ensure that we had a good time. Nothing was too much for them.

The separate beach club (Sugar Reef) although a 15-20 minute walk from the hotel, was only a five minute (free) bus ride away. The entertainment provided by the staff here was really good, especially the Tuesday night beach barbecue.

What we were unprepared for however were the tree frogs. The noise at nighttime from these tiny creatures was unbelievable and took a bit of getting used to. If we would’ve known about them we would have brought earplugs with us to help us get to sleep. In the end, we had several nightcaps from the poolside bar served up by eager staff to help us drop off. (A great way to end the day.)

This was a wonderful holiday in superb surroundings. When we go back to Barbados we won't be looking anywhere else for our accommodations.

2.0 stars Tired and shabby Visited: July 2000
Posted by stuart_b
The resort would have been fine had it been advertised as two- or three-star. Unfortunately, it utterly failed to match expectations created by its four-star Airtours brochure rating (and its price). Our standard rooms were in serious need of renovation as were most of the communal facilities. The kids club was dismal. Perhaps the biggest problem was that the room air-conditioning was not usable due to its age and noise (and was only provided in the bedroom and not the other rooms). With constant hot weather, a four month pregnant wife and a three year old son, this was not ideal.

Staff attitudes were very mixed; e.g. the head waiter's refusal to let our 3 year old into the dining room for breakfast without a shirt on - if we hadn't argued (and eventually ignored him) this would have involved a 20 minute walk there and back to our rooms to change (he had got his shirt wet on the walk down). Eventually we moved to another hotel.
