Sea-U! Guest House is perfect for relaxation. Visited: October 2004 |

I was lucky enough to be sent to Barbados on work this past week. So I flew out a couple of days early and stayed on the East coast, as I was looking for some peace and quiet.
This place was amazing. Talk about views and serenity! The other guests (there were five rooms, plus two cottages in the works) were wonderful, and it was great to eat breakfast and dinners together.
Bring your bug spray, or you're going to be scratching for days. This is not a place to stay if you want to go to the tourist-bars and night-clubs. Stay on the South coast for that. And taxis can be expensive. However, there are buses every hour to Bridgetown, and they cost around $1.50 US. I was in Barbados alone and had no problem taking the bus. It does get dark around 6 PM, so plan accordingly.
The rooms were clean and well maintained, they had no tv or telephone, but there was a telephone you could use if you needed to (free local calls) and an honor bar. The owner and the three sisters who worked there were very nice.
I couldn't have asked for a nicer stay! I don't usually travel to the same location twice, but I'm definitely planning on returning to the Sea-U! |

This is a great place to stay on the east coast. Visited: August 2004 |

We would recommend the Sea-U to anyone thinking of staying on the east coast. It surpassed our best expectations.
The food, optional, was really authentic and good, and the staff was great and very helpful - especially Uschi, the owner.
We're glad we didn't stay anywhere else. We hope it does not become too popular so that we won't be able to return, which we hope to do soon. |

It is with great difficulty that I find the words to describe the beauty of this location, the comfort of the guest house, and the assistance all the staff provided during our stay.
They have undoubtedly laid claim to a prime piece of real estate right in the heart of Paradise, and chosen the best team to assist guests in recognizing such. Everyone was so fantastically helpful without ever imposing on the tranquility provided by Bathseba, the palm trees, and the hammocks.
Although dinner was always fabulous, thank you for affording us the opportunity and guidance to dine at some other terrific establishments on the beautiful East Coast.
I hope they do not ever consider televisions in the guestrooms.
Thank you again! We hope to "Sea-U" real soon. |

It was like a dream. Visited: February 2003 |

The Guesthouse was perched on the side of a hill surrounded by lush vegetation and palm trees. Guests can enjoy lying in a hammock with their eyes closed, hear the endless roar of the surf at the bottom of the hill and feel the omnipresent Atlantic breeze rustling the trees. And through the leaves - the sun.
Breakfast and dinner were served outside, under cover and screened from the wind. As I ate, I saw a Green Monkey in a tree. A Lesser Antillean Bullfinch peeked his head under the linen covering the freshly baked coconut and banana bread. The resident cat wandered on the deck.
Seacat, one of the original Bathsheba surfers, works as the gardener here. He was friendly, smiling and talkative. Later in the afternoon, he cracked open a coconut for me. I drank the milk and ate the jelly.
The house was unusual in Bathsheba as it was constructed of wood, weathering nicely from the ocean breeze. Adjustable wood jalousies allowed cross ventilation to penetrate the rooms. A ceiling fan ensured nighttime comfort. A mosquito net covered the bed, although few bugs were apparent.
The nearby restaurants were all good. From the storied Atlantis Hotel to the more sophisticated Round House, none were disappointing.
The beach was spectacular. Giant rocks littered the shoreline, eroded at the bottom by the constant wave action. At low tide the relentless surf backed off to reveal the shoreline reef and sand bottomed tidal pools were exposed for soaking and splashing.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end.

A casual spectacular seaside holiday. Visited: February 2002 |

Having just had a terrific 10 days at Sea-U!, we felt we just had to post a recommendation.
We have a strong aversion to package tours and "organized" holidays, preferring to make our own small adventure out of a holiday. Sometimes things don't turn out so well, but this time it was a great big "bull's eye"!
The Sea-U! was exactly as shown on the website - simple, comfortable and completely practical sea-side accommodation in spectacular surroundings. (Other hotels may not match up to their glorious web pictures).
Uschi Wetzels at Sea-U! was charming as well as being organized and full of knowledge about Barbados. The whole atmosphere was very bare-foot casual and the weather is glorious.
We walked down to the Bathsheba beach for a swim every morning, (yes, you can swim, Uschi will tell you where), then spent the days driving around sightseeing in our little rented Moke, which Uschi also arranged. It wasn't the newest car, but cheap and cheerful and open.
We could get over to Bridgetown or the west coast soon enough when we needed to for shopping, restaurants and all that stuff. The roar of the surf in Tent Bay all night sure helped us sleep well.
As Di's dad used to say, we got home "tired but happy".

An ideal romantic stop off. We stayed one night out of our seven in Barbados. It is very peaceful, which means that all of the surrounding restaurants (3) are either quiet or empty. I would suggest a whole week of this might be a bit too much to bare, unless you're writing a novel, but a few nights is perfect.
The rooms are large and beautiful with wooden floors and walls all finished with a very contemporary wash. The shower is great and the kitchen is basic but clean, anyway. Who wants to cook? A large mosquito net hangs over the large double bed, while the fan and the louver windows and doors ensure the cool sea breezes help you off to sleep. Each room looks out onto the sea from high - with hammocks on the decked porch and distributed among the palms in the garden. It’s the sort of place that Vogue or Elle magazines might be very happy to do a fashion shoot. Everything is tasteful and the atmosphere relaxed.
There's an honesty bar to which you are given a key to help yourself, and breakfast can be brought to your room if you'd prefer not to socialize with the other guests on the dining deck. We spent the evening at the roundhouse, and then returned to drink champagne on our deck in the dark listening to the sea. All in all, well worth a stay. You'll remember it forever.

Outstanding holiday location and a caring host! Visited: May 2001 |

We needed to find a hideaway where we could relax. Ushi's Guesthouse is truly that and more.
Located in what I feel is probably the best location in Bathsheba, the view from the Sea-U verandas over the Atlantic is breathtaking. A cool breeze always seems to be present. The island is so small that it's best to hire a little jeep or take one of the buses that offer a good service throughout the island. You can be in the west, south or anywhere in next to no time.
A small comfortable bar and availability of breakfast and home cooked meals (which are superb) offer real flexibility. Cook in your apartment if you wish, but who the hell wants to do too much of that in Barbados?
The gardener (Seacat) is a cool dude, too. He'll fill you in on the health giving properties of coconuts! Toni has some cool tunes.
Check out Morgan Heritage and 'don't haffi dread.' Take a trip on a catamaran, swim with the turtles and visit my favorite restaurant (apart from Uschi's!) in Holetown, 'CoCoMo's'. Oh boy, day dreaming again! You'll have a great time. We will return !

An exotic haven far from the maddening crowd Visited: December 2000 |

We were due to visit Barbados for a friend's wedding and having decided that we would rather stay on the quiet east coast (as opposed to the chaotic west coast), we booked a room at Sea-U! Guesthouse. What we found was an exotic haven far from the maddening crowd.
Even though we hired a jeep so as not to miss out on the beaches of the Caribbean coast, we always knew that returning to Bathsheba in the evening would be a breath of fresh air. It felt like returning home. There were no crowds or tourists, just hammocks to laze in and beautiful views to witness.
The appartments were equipped with kitchenettes and we found ourselves cooking in the evenings. When not cooking, a fabulous three-course evening meal was served and we shared it with other guests. As there were only five rooms, the amount of people in and around the guesthouse were limited and as a result the atmosphere was one of relaxation and intimacy.
Congratulations to Sea-U's! host, Uschi, who has maintained a true Caribbean feel. We hope to return again in the future.

Ocean breezes and a hammock... Visited: June 2000 |

What a wonderful, relaxing place that Uschi has set up! This simple guesthouse on the beautiful and laidback eastern coast of Barbados was perfect.
My friend and I wanted a relaxing, getaway-from-it-all type of place where we could go from the beach to a hammock with a book in hand; that's what this place was.
The furnishings are simple, but the convenience of your own kitchenette and the great food offered by the Porch (Ushchi's porch upstairs) were just what we were looking for.
Uschi, a transplanted German is a well-heeled traveler that can give you tips not only on Barbados, but the rest of the Caribbean as well.

A pleasant experience in Paradise!! Visited: December 1969 |

We were the first offical guests of Sea-U. We enjoyed our stay so much we are going back this year.
Located on the eastern shore, it is off the beaten path and offers stunning views of the Atlantic. The breeze is refreshing and the accommodations are comfortable.
The food is excellent and the view while dining is awe inspiring. The hotelier is very hospitable and tries in all ways to make your stay pleasant.

A truly exotic locale, far from the din of the west coast. Visited: December 1969 |

If you want to head south to some place exotic, but are not thrilled about lining up at the buffet with 300 other guests, and if your idea of fun is winding along the breathtaking backroads and remote beaches that few others but the locals ever see, then I would highly recommend the Sea-U! Guesthouse on the "other side" of the island, where friendly locals abound and tourists are few.
The four apartments on the main floor are simply furnished, yet very peaceful and clean. But the best thing about them is that the sound of the surf against the rocks down below lulls you to sleep each night. And during the day, your palm shaded hammock with "reach out and touch the ocean" views await.
The east coast breeze is omnipresent, always keeping you cool. And if that's not cool enough, SeaCat, the friendly gardener, will bring you a fresh coconut from one of the property's coconut trees.
Uschi, the owner and hospitable host, serves breakfast and dinner on the upstairs porch. The dinners are great local cuisine, such as pumpkin fritters and fried dolphin (the fish!), but also provide real value if you're on a budget as eating out in Barbados, even on the east coast, is not inexpensive. But the best part is you get to gather around the table at the end of the day and chat with a few fellow travelers from all parts of the world.
There's a grocery store, and several small restaurants/bars within walking distance. But if you really want to see the island (and "hug some cane" as my husband and I call driving on the back roads), take Uschi up on her "car included" package, as Bathsheba and it's environment are also very vertical.
All in all, Sea-U! provided us with one of the most magical and exotic (and affordable) getaways we've ever experienced. If you are not a resort person, Sea-U! is for you.
