5.0 stars Little Good Harbour is a luxurious and tranquil hideaway. Visited: November 2002

It looks like it is not impossible to get away from the crowds and sample the local way of life on Barbados, and while the rest of the West Coast is teeming with jetskis and beach hawkers, the Little Good Harbour provides that much needed quiet retreat option without compromising on luxury.

We stayed in one of the tastefully decorated one-bedroom garden cottages overlooking the lovely swimming pool and the historic Fort Rupert, and we were pleasantly surprised to find a decent seaview thrown in for a good measure.

The downstairs featured a verandah, a comfy lounge area with a CD player and a fully equipped fitted kitchen. You may not want to use it too often as, after all, you are on holiday. Also, the Fish Pot restaurant across the road served the most delicious and well presented dishes. But, the kitchen provided an opportunity to cook our own catch of the day bought at the local market in the romantic little fishing village of Shermans, only a 5 minute walk away.

The upstairs of the cottage had an emperor-sized four poster bed and an en-suite bathroom with shower. There was also a balcony with a view, a perfect spot for that early morning cup of coffee.

While our stay at the Little Good Harbour was thoroughly enjoyable and wholeheartedly recommended, the beach was a little bit of a letdown. The view could have been nicer and, although it was essentially a quiet place separated from the local road by lush vegetation, it was nevertheless a roadside beach. Having said that, give me a car passing by every now and then over the constant roar of jetskis on all the other West Coast beaches any time.

On the plus side, the comfy gazebos were an absolute godsend, and for that ultimate relaxation experience you can always lounge by the pool, an idyllic oasis of tranquility.

Overall, it was a fantastic accommodation set in lush gardens with a quietly luxurious and romantic feel, excellent seaview restaurant at a historic location, and a good low-key beach. Enjoy!
