Stay Away from Belize City Visited: March 2005 |

This hotel is below average; the rest of the city is even worse. If you're expecting a tropical vacation, this is not your scene. Belize City is fueled solely by cruise ship stops. During the day, local entrepreneurs (i.e., hustlers) assault you with tours, drugs, and souvenirs. At night, it's not safe to leave the block.
Save money and grief: Stay in Ambergris Caye or somewhere else far away from Belize City and the Radisson Ft. George. |

We stayed here during the first three nights of our trip to Belize, before moving on to Ambergris Caye. We found the Radisson to be a convenient location from which to sightsee (e.g., Mayan ruins in Belize and Tikal, Guatemala, cave tubing, zoo).
The picture shown on this sight was not very representative of the hotel. It was fairly large, with three different sections bridging two sides of the street. We stayed in the Villa Wing, which was across the street from the Colonial and Executive wings (and the lobby). But those rooms had balconies and their own pool.
The Radisson had several restaurants: King George's Dining Room was the most formal. Other options included the Stone Grill (by the pool in the Colonial/Executive Wing), the Baymen's Tavern, and La Petit Cafe.
The gift shop was quite good, and the girls running the tour desk were great at arranging whatever you would like to do. This hotel was located within a block of the cruise ship terminal (with shops and restaurants), and three other restaurants: HarbourView (highly recommended), The Smoky Mermaid at the Great House (also recommended), and Chateau Caribbean (which we did not care for).
We were pleasantly surprised with Belize City. We had heard many nightmarish stories and suggestions not to stay in the city, but we felt that the city was cleaner and safer than other port cities we've been to in the Caribbean. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. |
