I love Placencia, Belize! We stayed at the Turtle Inn, which is a Frances Ford Coppola property, for only a night but what a night! The food in the restaurant is great, the pool is unique, and the rooms are one-of-a-kind. |

Since it has only been open for three months I’d like to give the Turtle Inn’s management the benefit of the doubt, but I can’t. The property is beautiful and the rooms and public spaces are luxurious. Service, however, is horrendous. I don’t blame the staff. They smile a lot, and generally try to please, but it appears that they are simply under-trained and overwhelmed. Other problems include a very noisy pool area that is surrounded by Cabanas. At all cost avoid these accommodations as the kids screaming “Marco Polo” all day will surely drive you insane. The remaining units at the Inn are further away from the pool, but they are few. The property also felt very confined with virtually all the beach eaten up by buildings close to the water. Outdoor dining at night is impossible as the lighting is so poor. Waiters were futilely holding flashlights to help diners see menus and their food. The Inn is also unfinished as of March 2003, with construction activity continuing around the guests.
If the Turtle Inn is going to charge luxury prices they need to get their act together. Jan, the aloof manager, acts as if she’s a guest at the Inn. I’ve never met anyone with a personality so wrong for the hospitality industry. And believe me, if you have a problem, Jan is nowhere to be found. We started our stay in Belize at Coppola’s Blancaneaux Lodge and met a couple there whose confirmed reservation had been pulled out from under them the day before they were to depart to the Turtle Inn. Jan wouldn’t even speak to them by phone, answer e-mail or otherwise.
Coppola’s Blancaneaux is well worth the visit. If you are considering a stay in Placencia, however, I’d recommend Rum Point, the Inn at Robert’s Grove or Luba Hati.

| Picturesque thatched beach cabanas make up the classic vision of a Caribbean hideaway set on the sandy shore peaking out between the palms. Set on the sparkling white sand of the peninsula about a mile north of Placencia are seven cozy cottages on stilts where... |
