1.0 stars We were charged more than quoted - stay away! Visited: January 2009

We stayed at the hotel from 01/27-31/09. The hotel was under construction. It was noisy and audible from all portions of the resort - especially the beach. We traveled during the off season, and this held disadvantages and benefits.

The management was rude. Most of the wait staff, bartenders and the bell captains were friendly, though. The concierge was typically MIA, but was knowledgeable.

The food was presented well, but was of poor quality. The steaks, burgers, prime rib, and lamb were very fatty and bad cuts of meat. The veggies were frozen.

We booked the all inclusive plan, and expected to receive Bermuda’s 400 Anniversary promotion. When we arrived, we were given a “passport for the promotion”. We were pre-charged two nights as a “guarantee.” Upon check out, we were informed we had not “checked” the promotion box. Upon review of their website there was no button to check for the promotion. In retrospect, the promotion was unclear and was listed as being placed upon your reservation if you book and travel between certain dates.

On our last day there, the hotel had visitors form Bermuda’s Department of Tourism, and the hotel was going out of their way to make their experience enjoyable. The desk clerk was boasting about the “extras” they had been providing to that particular group, and how they were being “taken care of.”

The hotel charged our deposit $830, $919 for the remainder of our stay, and additional $519 for no reason whatsoever, and placed a hold on my account for $400. We telephoned the resort to inquire about the charges. They asked for our contact information, disputed the situation, and advised us my credit card only was charged for $919. My bank says otherwise.

Our negative experiences over-shadowed the positive. The Bermuda 400 Year Anniversary promotion made us choose to go to Bermuda over other vacation spots. Be aware the promotion is a “resort credit” not a “room credit”. You will not just get $200-$400 off your bill.

We will never come back here or to Bermuda ever again.

3.0 stars Grotto Bay Visited: June 2006

I wrote a reveiw a couple of weeks ago about Grotto Bay, and I stated that I would bring you up to date as the issue evolved.
I am happy to report that we have come to a complete agreement, and that Grotto Bay did not mislead us in any way.
As I stated before; This is a good value.
I want to thank the Grotto Bay staff for working with us to resolve this misunderstanding.

3.0 stars We encountered questionable billing practices. Visited: June 2006

We recently stayed at Grotto Bay. We had a good time until we checked out and were charged $1,198.00 more than we were quoted. I had to sign the bill so we could catch our flight home.

Management assured us that this would be corrected by the next afternoon. Well, it has been one week today. We have received absolutely no response from Grotto Bay.

If you choose to deal with these people, I suggest you leave nothing to doubt. Trust and verify, then verify again.

I will update as this process plays out.

3.0 stars This was a great hotel. Visited: July 2005

I had a great time at this hotel! I was not immediately impressed by the hotel room. However, it was clean, and the staff was very friendly.

My friend and I also liked the convenience of the beach and the pool. The pool side bar and grill were great as well.

If you're not looking for a luxurious hotel, but want a decent place to stay, this would be a good choice.

3.0 stars Grotto Bay had very friendly staff, an average beach and pool, and clean rooms. Visited: June 2004

My wife and I visited Bermuda on a whim. Our travel agent had stayed at Grotto Bay Beach Resort several times and recommended it. They had one run available (with one week until our travel date) so we took it for our long weekend.

We booked a beachfront room. However, we weren't really beachfront - we were bayfront and looking toward the airport. This resort was not on the ocean, it was on the bay. But it wasn't a big deal. The view wasn't that bad. The room was clean and the bathroom was very nice.

The pool was small, as was the beach. We had no difficulty in finding an unoccupied umbrella. The water was clear, but not an impressive snorkeling environment. The pool/bar staff was attentive and very nice.

We only ate lunch and breakfast at Grotto Bay and neither disappointed. The breakfast buffet was a pretty standard hotel buffet fare-omelets, sausages, fruit, danishes, etc. Lunch by the pool consisted of sandwiches and salads, and was fine.

The Bermuda taxi drivers were on strike while we visited, so taxis were hard to come by. There was a bus stop beside the main entrance to the resort which was about a minute walk from the lobby. So, we took a bus into Hamilton for dinner our first night. It was about a 20-25 minute drive with a few stops along the way.

We ate at Port of Call on Front Street and it was fantastic-our best meal on the island. We managed to snag a "gypsy" cab for the ride home. Apparently, some locals who worked in the government's tourism dept volunteered to drive their personal cars as taxis in the evening.

The bell captain made arrangements the next day for a taxi tour of the island. He made some calls to some friends and found us a ride. We spent about three hours and saw all but the westernmost area of the island and he charged $90. We left his cab in Hamilton for lunch (sushi at Harbourfront) and shopping. We managed to find a taxi back, too. We ate at Tom Moore's Tavern that evening and it rivaled our first dinner.

We took a bus to St. George's for some shopping and lunch. We had lunch at the White Horse on the Harbour overlooking Ordnance Island. It was a nice setting and the food was good.

Our last night we ate at Cafe Gio's in St. George's and it was also very good.

We had a very nice short trip to Bermuda. Although Grotto Bay was close to the airport, there was no problem with noise. The view was not great considering the airport was a backdrop, but it was not a big deal.

Also, the staff was very friendly and accommodating. But this was not a very luxurious resort.
