Q: I will be staying on St. Thomas in early December and would like to take the ferry over to Tortola. I want to stay on Tortola for only 2 or 3 nights. I don't want to rent a car, so I'd like to stay in a convenient location for walking and taxies. I'd also like to take the ferry from Tortola to Virgin Gorda and stay there for 1 night then ferry back to Tortola the early the next day and then to St. Thomas late that afternoon. I am not familiar with Tortola or Virgin Gorda at all and would like some reccomendations on where to stay when I visit both places. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Answer

A: There are four ferry operators offering service between St. Thomas (Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook) and Tortola (West End and Roadtown). Clearing immigration is necessary; trip may take longer than approximated. Proof of citizenship is required.
- Caribbean Maritime Road Town Fast Ferry (866) 903-3779, (340) 777-2800
- Smith's Ferry (340) 775-7292
- Native Son Inc. (340) 774-8685
- Speedy's
The latest return to St. Thomas is typically around 2-3 pm, but on weekends you might find one around 4. I would suggest you call them and get exact schedules to coordinate your trip. |
