We enjoyed the Sugar Mill Restaurant and Inn. Visited: May 2008
Posted by dbahn
My wife and I spent two days at the Sugar Mill preceding a Bareboat charter. We loved it - both the restaurant and the inn.

We reserved the cottage along with another couple who had to cancel their trip at the last minute. So, we ended up with a huge suite-like arrangement to ourselves, which was extra nice.

We dined at the hotel both nights, and thoroughly enjoyed both meals. I doubt that there is a better restaurant on Tortola. And, in speaking with others on the sailing part of our trip, that seems to be the consensus of opinion among residents and tourists.

We wouldn't hesitate for a second to go back - and probably will.

We had an absolutely brillant time at the Sugar Mill Hotel. We had a lovely room, the staff was great, and the food was to die for.

Both my husband and I agreed that it was the best vacation we had in our 15 years of marital bliss.

We are definitely coming back next year!

What a great place. Visited: April 2008

We just returned from a great stay at the Sugar Mill Hotel in Tortola. We were on their Adventure Package, and all I can say is -wow!

We had a beautiful room (called the Cottage). We also enjoyed amazing food. The chef created a specific menu nightly to suit my gluten free diet.

The features of the package were great. We enjoyed diving, daysailing, flight to another island, castaway beach picnic and an amazing room to return to.

The room also had an outside shower. It was really nice bathing under the stars while listening to the crickets and tree frogs in the background. It was so cool.

Also, the staff was very friendly and efficient. We can't wait to go back next year.

This was a wonderful gem. Visited: March 2008

We were delighted with our short holiday at the Sugar Mill Hotel. We were greeted by wonderful and friendly staff. We had just come off a seven-day bareboat cruise with weather that was less than perfect.

We were so pleased by the lovely adjoining rooms with a perfect patio and landscaping that framed a post card view.

The dinner menu for that evening was available for review in the morning - a clever devise to get you geared up for a great meal. It was! Fabulous and creative entrees with fresh local ingredients, were beautifully prepared and served with a smile.

Our group ate at the Sugar Mill every night of our three-night stay by popular demand. The menu changed daily, and the variety of choices was wonderful. On the busiest night with a full dining room, our meal was served promptly, and was perfectly prepared.

This is a wonderful gem, and we will return.

This was a truly fantastic place. Visited: March 2008

We recently returned from our trip to the Sugar Mill Hotel, and it was truly a fantastic vacation. Everything was lovely from beginning to end.

When we arrived, we were greeted by a lovely lady at the front desk whom informed us we had been given a complimentary upgrade into the Plantation House Suite.

What a fantastic room! It had such a great view, and was absolutely spotless - not to mention the hammock on the balcony.

The property was beautiful and quiet. The staff went out of their way to be helpful, and always with a smile on their faces. No request was too great.

Also, dinner was amazing, with a menu that changed nightly. We ate at the Sugar Mill every night of our stay and were never disappointed.

From the housekeeping staff to the management, everyone ensured that our stay at the Sugar Mill was one to remember. We will tell our friends, and we will certainly be back next year!

It's overrated, and not the best on the island, but an okay stay overall. Visited: March 2008
Posted by alyadup59
We stayed at Sugar Mill for eight days in mid-March. Bear in mind we've stayed all over Tortola in the past, and know what to expect basically.

Our room wasn't clean, the sheets were grimy, and there were dirty surfaces. It was a bit dated, and just not what we felt was "upscale".

The staff was friendly, but not very attentive.

Also, the food was once outstanding, but was horrible all three nights we ate during our stay.

The property was very close to road, so the road noise at night was noticeable.

Complaints were never addressed with any kind of concern until we were paying and checking out.

Finally, the vView wasn't worth the money. There are much nicer places on the island with better locations.

Overall, we felt this wasn't the perfect experience we had dreamt about after reading rave reviews. Our experience was mediocre at best, and sadly, we won't return here.

This is a special place for unique people. Visited: November 2007

The quiet gem of the Suger Mill Hotel sits as far from the airport and Tortola's main urban center, Road Town, as it is possible to get and still be on the same island. You can hear and taste the peace and quiet.

But the Sugar Mill is no rustic retreat. Each room is fully equipped, with a microwave and fridge...more than enough to ensure your drink is always chilled and a fresh sandwich can be whipped up in the event of a sudden snack emergency.

Each room is comfortably furnished, and all are kept spotless by a cheerful friendly and helpful team of maids. The hotel's decor is extremely comfortable, spotless, and well maintained. Also, for a good nights sleep, each room is equipped wit a quiet and very efficient air conditioner, an absolutely essential piece of kit on an island where the humidity can slay the strongest individual.

With its beautiful swimming pool, sun loungers and quiet location, the Sugar Mill is the ideal spot for those seeking to re-charge their batteries and spend quality time with their partners.

The kitchens at the hotel have been described by many as the very finest in the Caribbean. From the generous portions of breakfast, to the casual snacks, often of that most evocative variety, a judicious combination of local delicacies combined with the comfort food of that most nostalgic of generations, the baby boomers, the overall effect is of a foodies paradise.

In the evening, the dining room provides a selection of appetizers and entrees that are first rate and would put even a high end New York restaurant to shame. Service is swift, cheerful and unobtrusive, by a staff that quickly learns the individual quirks and personal preferences of their guests.

This is a beautiful hotel, with clean, modern, well equipped accommodations, set on an island of unsurpassed natural beauty. It has a five-star kitchen and chefs who make the best possible of both local produce and the highest quality imports. It

However, what really sets the Sugar Mill apart is staff that is friendly, courteous, and always willing to go the extra mile to make sure you are having a good time.

This is a good choice of accommodation. Visited: April 2007

The view from my pool house room was outstanding, and we watched the sunset every night. The room was renovated in October 2006. It was clean as a pin, and well appointed.

The food was great, and the place was peaceful and quiet. I wish I had rented a car, as the taxis ate up our cash.

We did discover "Clem's by the Sea" during a walk in Carrot Bay. Go just past the SHELL Man Museum, and stop off and have a Carib beer while sitting and looking at the incredible water view. He even played the steel drums for us.

It was very safe here on Tortolla.

This was a good value, private, quiet, and small. Visited: March 2006

The room was clean and large. There was an in-room mini kitchen - which would be good for business stays. The A/C worked great.

Also, the second floor had a spacious balcony and a lovely palm-fringed view of the water. (I noticed some rooms did not have views.)

The private beach was across the street, and was good for swimming. I would not want to stay here for the pool, though.

I received nice service in the the restaurant and bar. It was very low-key and casual. It was a small property with good privacy.

This was our best vacation ever! Visited: April 2005
Posted by pan411
Needless to say, I did tons of research on the internet and through travel books. Settling on the Sugar Mill was an excellent decision!

We booked the upper level of the Plantation Suite. It was a building that housed four units, two up and two below. We chose the upper because of reading of better ocean views from these rooms and that was correct. We had wonderful views of Little Apple Bay and Jost Van Dyke from our balcony, whereas the lower units had no view at all as they had high stone walls around their patio area.

The interior was something else. It was very spacious, with a king sized bed, separate sitting area with several over-stuffed chairs and a sofa, all done in colorful prints and white wicker. There was also a small kitchenette with microwave, toaster, and refrigerator and coffee maker, plus plenty of plates and utensils.

The bathroom was the largest we've had on a vacation with double sink vanity, large open concept tiled shower, full length mirror and shuttered window.

We signed on for the Adventure Package. For a week's stay we had four dinners included (full choice from menu, no limits), Hertz car for six days, a daysail on choice of a catamaran or schooner, a day trip by plane to Anegada, which was a whole world unto itself and should not be missed!, an autographed cookbook by the owners of the hotel, and a bottle of rum.

The breakfasts were served on a small terrace beside the bar area overlooking the bay. In addition to the usual bacon and eggs, they had tropical combinations of fruits and English dishes like bangers (it IS the British Virgin Islands). My husband watches his cholesterol and was happy to note they had Eggbeaters.

Dinners were held in the very romantic dining room which used to be a sugar mill hundreds of years ago. It was an open room with the sounds of the ocean and tree frogs serenading the diners. There were massive stone walls, a small waterfall over ancient copper bowls, and fresh hibiscus on the tables.

The meals were varied, always a choice of meat, seafood, poultry, and vegetarian. Outside of our package, I would say the prices would be on the high side: soups and appetizers in the $7-$12 range and entrees $22-$30. Desserts were equally delicious, our favorites being the key lime pie (had it twice!) and a coconut cloud tart.

Overall, it was a wonderful hotel!

The Sugar Mill was a wonderful spot for our honeymoon.

The little beach was very quiet, the food was excellent, and the setting was beautiful.

I highly recommend the Sugar Mill (you should plan to eat dinner there several times).

This is an excellent honeymoon spot! You will feel special! Visited: April 2003
Posted by doregear
We stayed here for a week-long honeymoon in April and it was great. The Sugar Mill was very small and we felt special here.

We loved exploring the grounds to find exotic flowers in bloom everywhere. The open air restaurant was a treat for breakfast and dinner. We sat on the private beach almost every evening to look for sea turtles feeding on the reef as the sun set.

Tortola had so many fun places to explore. Every day we set out in our jeep with our snorkle gear to find a new and secluded spot to snorkle. The food was amazing everywhere we went. The people were friendly, and we felt safe (except for some obvious pick pockets on the secluded beach...just don't leave out any valuables!).

There weren't any crowds, and it was so exotic! The waters were so clear and the snorkeling was fantastic. I'm so glad we selected somewhere that wasn't a tourist trap, wasn't a massive resort, and didn't have kids running around for our honeymoon.

The room we had at the Sugar Mill had a seperate sitting area and patio that made our room very private. The waitstaff in the restaurants were so-so, but the front desk staff was extremely helpful. They planned anything we wanted and were full of great suggestions for places to eat and things to do (talk with Justin!).

The owners had a great cocktail hour for the guests and they were charming. Check out the paintings in the rooms....they were painted by Jinx Morgan, one of the owners! We had a great stay in paradise!

Sugar Mill provided a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. Visited: May 2002
Posted by bcrabill
We just returned from a week at the Sugar Mill. All the reviews on this site were accurate and guided our decision to choose the Sugar Mill.

We stayed in a deluxe room that overlooked the pool. It was very quiet. However, their were roosters crowing all the time on Tortola.

The room was clean, had good air conditioning, stove, refrigerator, some paperback books on the shelf, a king-sized bed, a couch, a table for four and two chairs. Given the quality of the restaurant, I do not know who would use the kitchen, though.

A rental car is essential if you want to see the island. Go to town or go to a ferry. It will cost you $20 each way to go just about anywhere by taxi and the rental is about $45 a day.

The beach at the Sugar Mill was small but very nice. We preferred the beach at Smuggler's Cove, a short drive toward the west end. The hotel made us a wonderful picnic lunch to take to Smugglers Cove. This was necessary since Smugglers Cove had no place to obtain a meal. Some locals put together a small beach bar under the palms and they were not shy when it comes to pouring rum.

The pool at the Sugar Mill was also very nice and had quite a bit of shade during the day. The BVI sun was very hot. Bring lots of sunscreen!

Our package included a day sail, which we took on the White Squall II, an 80-foot schooner of mid 30's vintage. The crew was excellent and tended to our every need. A nice lunch was provided with plenty of rum punch. The boat normally went to the Baths at Virgin Gorda and to Cooper Island.

Meals were the highlight both in the morning and evening. Service was excellent, as was the food. The dinner menu changed daily. Usually, there were three appetizer selections, two salads, four entrees and three or four desserts. Everything we had was excellent. We had been led to believe the the restaurant was somewhat dressy, but turned out that shorts and a golf shirt worked fine. (The point being, don't overpack with a lot of stuff you have to carry though the airport and will carry home clean. We overpacked.)

The staff was very pleasant and helpful. If you are looking for a nice quiet hotel on a quiet island, this is the place!

A tranquil, serene and relaxing atmosphere. Visited: April 2002

Wow-what a great place! I was a little aprehensive after reading about the small beach and a road separating the hotel from the beach, but when I saw it - no problem. The beach was perfect and quaint, and the road was a non-issue.

I was a little disappointed that the beach bar was only open from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., but a walk up to the main bar was close enough.

We stayed in a deluxe room, which had a spectacular view. It was clean - not luxurious, but fine for our needs (I thought the linens could have been of better quality, but I'm nit picking). Also, fresh beach towels were provided every day.

The best part of this place was the staff. They were very friendly and a wealth of information-from best places to snorkel, best beaches, restaurants. They evern arranged for a rental car, called ahead for ferry schedules and gave us snorkeling fins to use (no charge). Anything we needed or wanted to know, the staff was there for us.

We dined at the Sugar Mill two of our four nights and were very pleased. Matt, the chef, was a new addition, and he did a teriffic job! The menu changed each night with approximately four entree choices and four appetizer choices. The wine list was a pleasant surprise as well.

Breakfast was also a treat each morning-great coffee! The dining room overlooked the beach. It was a perfect setting to start our day. We also had an enjoyable lunch one day at the beach bar. I had a very flavorful turkey burger and my companion had an unreal pork sandwich.

If you're looking for a laid-back island that is not touristy and has beautiful scenery, Tortola is for you! We loved it. We are looking forward to our next visit--we'll definitely be back!

Last year I came here while doing a search for places to stay during our honeymoon.
I must say that the reviews posted on this site did not lie.

This place was fabulous. The food was fantastic and definitely worth the money. The plantation villa where we stayed was so beautiful and the view was spectacular.

The service was also great. Everyone was so friendly and went out of their way to make us feel at home.

We will definitely go back!

After reading travelers' reviews on numerous webpages about many resorts, we decided to honeymoon at the Sugar Mill and could not have been more pleased. The honeymoon package they provided was outstanding. The activities in the package were first rate, the food was delicious and the staff was extremely helpful and courteous. The resort was intimate, romantic and provided the perfect backdrop for a week of relaxation. We will definitely return.

An exceptional facility. Visited: February 2001

Sugar Mill Hotel is an exceptional facility. The rooms were gorgeous and the food was wonderful. The staff was courteous and helpful. Sugar Mill caters to an upscale crowd. There were many seniors and a few yuppies, but no kids while we were there.

We stayed in a newly refurbished Plantation Suite, which was one of the nicest, if not the nicest, hotel room we have ever had. It is, however, close to the road, which was not an issue for us but could be for others.

While there, I strongly recommend a funky restaurant called the Shell Museum if you want to get an idea of native life on Tortola. Also, we had a great day sail on the White Squall II and recommend that as well. The Sugar Mill staff recommended both to us.

Tortola is one island in the Caribbean where I really recommend renting a car. Others are very accessible by taxi, but Tortola’s taxis are expensive and not as prevalent.

Best in the BVIs! Visited: January 2001
Posted by allent
We visited in high season (January), looking for an escape from the Caribbean crowds. Tortola did provide that and Sugar Mill Hotel even more so. We found all to be outstanding, especially the service!

The food was top notch and not overpriced for the locale (entree avg. $16 for dinner). I would recommend The MAP if you like to eat. Lunch down by the ocean was good as well.

Accommodations were clean and somewhat nicer than other peer properties we investigated. This was not the Ritz, but all was well kept and presented. There were air conditioners in all rooms, but we did not need ours at all.

The bar and sitting area was nice for cocktails before dinner and meeting other guests.

I cannot say enough about the service. The entire staff was approachable, polite and genuinely helpful (something the island is not known for). The day desk clerk was a gem—informative, assisting and willing to do what it took to ensure your stay was pleasurable.

Best Caribbean vacation so far! Visited: January 2001
Posted by linmarble
My husband and I have visited various islands for over 20 years and Tortola is our new favorite! The Sugar Mill staff were great--friendly, helpful, and informative. It's a small hotel, and it was never crowded, always chaises at the pool and beach. We chose it for its location on the beach (small), on-site restaurant (a dining experience to rival New Orleans!) and positive reviews from friends.

We stayed a week on the adventure package which included a "jeep", 4 gourmet dinners, gourmet picnic, day sail and more. Our unit included king bed, bath with generous shower, separate living room/kitchenette and a great patio, behind the pool with beautiful sunset (and all day) views of the bay and distant islands.

The Jeep was well-used; much to explore. The "vertical" hill roads seemed daunting at first, but we got used to them quickly and traffic was very light.

Sugar Mill can be relaxing or an adventure. We mixed it up, reading at the pool or beach on quiet days and exploring other days. We have to return--did not see it all in a week.

The day sail was a highlight on the Kuralu from Sopers Hole to Jost van Dyke. Met and chatted with nice people and snorkeled.

The owners, manager and staff of Sugar Mill have succeeded in creating a premier "home away from home" feeling. The concierge service was especially helpful-
-where to buy food, where are good beaches, etc.

The Islands beach restaurant across the street, ably managed by Sharon, was delightful for lunch and lighter dinners, to the accompaniment of the pounding surf. Mid-January is the early part of busy season according to the staff. Hope to be there again in 2002!

I doubt I will ever eat better food in my life! Visited: April 2000
Posted by Luckicat11
I traveled with my husband and two children, ages nine and ten. The accommodations were very clean and the staff made you feel very welcome. The food was a bit pricey, but I have never eaten better food in my life. My children are picky eaters so we usually fed them earlier up in the room. During dinner one night, the lights went out and the staff went to get the children and bring them to the gazebo to play some board games by candlelight while we ate our dinner. The staff truly went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable.

The beach was small but well protected and very quiet. If you're planning a trip, and you will be there for the full moon, head down the road a bit (walk) and experience the full-moon party at the Bomba Shack (literally a shack). We had so much fun!

I highly recommend the Sugar Mill if you are looking for a low key getaway.
