Best Caribbean vacation so far! Visited: January 2001 |

My husband and I have visited various islands for over 20 years and Tortola is our new favorite! The Sugar Mill staff were great--friendly, helpful, and informative. It's a small hotel, and it was never crowded, always chaises at the pool and beach. We chose it for its location on the beach (small), on-site restaurant (a dining experience to rival New Orleans!) and positive reviews from friends.
We stayed a week on the adventure package which included a "jeep", 4 gourmet dinners, gourmet picnic, day sail and more. Our unit included king bed, bath with generous shower, separate living room/kitchenette and a great patio, behind the pool with beautiful sunset (and all day) views of the bay and distant islands.
The Jeep was well-used; much to explore. The "vertical" hill roads seemed daunting at first, but we got used to them quickly and traffic was very light.
Sugar Mill can be relaxing or an adventure. We mixed it up, reading at the pool or beach on quiet days and exploring other days. We have to return--did not see it all in a week.
The day sail was a highlight on the Kuralu from Sopers Hole to Jost van Dyke. Met and chatted with nice people and snorkeled.
The owners, manager and staff of Sugar Mill have succeeded in creating a premier "home away from home" feeling. The concierge service was especially helpful-
-where to buy food, where are good beaches, etc.
The Islands beach restaurant across the street, ably managed by Sharon, was delightful for lunch and lighter dinners, to the accompaniment of the pounding surf. Mid-January is the early part of busy season according to the staff. Hope to be there again in 2002!

I doubt I will ever eat better food in my life! Visited: April 2000 |

I traveled with my husband and two children, ages nine and ten. The accommodations were very clean and the staff made you feel very welcome. The food was a bit pricey, but I have never eaten better food in my life. My children are picky eaters so we usually fed them earlier up in the room. During dinner one night, the lights went out and the staff went to get the children and bring them to the gazebo to play some board games by candlelight while we ate our dinner. The staff truly went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable.
The beach was small but well protected and very quiet. If you're planning a trip, and you will be there for the full moon, head down the road a bit (walk) and experience the full-moon party at the Bomba Shack (literally a shack). We had so much fun!
I highly recommend the Sugar Mill if you are looking for a low key getaway.

The ultimate hiding spot. Visited: December 1969 |

We were looking for a place to get away for a few days without our kid, family or work. We chose right!
Upon arrival, the first thing we noticed was the abundance of vegetation. Every inch of the resort that was not a building or path was dense with it, and I have to say the effect was refreshing.
The villa was huge and very well presented in tropical colors. Definitely comfortable. The beach and pool were a few hundred feet from any of the rooms, and during the off-season it felt as if we owned them. Many times we were the only ones basking in the sun!!
The food was absolutely incredible, which was expected since the Sugar Mill Restaurant is well known for its quality. People who are willing to try new dishes will enjoy the restaurant, trust me, anything you order will be great. I can't really talk about breakfast...we never made it to any of them. Lunch was a surprise. It was served in a pavilion by the beach and it was not prepared by the restaurant staff. It seemed that lunch was delegated to another group, but the food was excellent as well.
The Sugar Mill staff were reserved. They seemed to be making an effort not to get in the way, but they were there when you needed them. They were also very friendly if you approached them in a more social atmosphere. I think the service was excellent.
Finally, this was a great place to do absolutely nothing. Just sleep, eat, swim, snorkel, sunbathe, read, drink wine and smoke Cuban cigars. I'm sure you could have a more active vacation by visiting the nearby islands and taking some day cruises... but I wouldn't know about that.

Our little piece of paradise Visited: December 1969 |

My boyfriend and I were looking for a tropical location to spend some quality time together. We were so excited about traveling to The Sugar Mill and what we found lived up to all our expectations and more.
It was low season, so the hotel was very quiet, just what we wanted. Set in beautifully lush, tropical surroundings, the hotel had a really relaxed, airy feel to it.
Our Plantation House Suite was wonderful, very nicely decorated and well fitted. The beautiful porch overlooked the ocean and I spent many an hour chilling out on the hammock, taking in the breathtaking scenery.
The small beach across the road was gorgeous, white sands and crystal clear waters. It was like our own private beach, great for relaxing and watching the world go by. I can almost feel my bare feet splashing through the warm waters now.
The food was fantastic, very Caribbean and worth experimenting with. The beach restaurant was great and the Mill restaurant was so intimate and romantic. We can also recommend the cocktails before dinner!
What better endorsement could we have had, than from a local girl who said, "If I ever had to leave the island, I'd spend my last 3 days at the Sugar Mill, the most romantic place on Earth." We couldn't agree more.

Prior to going to Tortola, people said "Tortola -- there's not much on Tortola." Well, when I arrived at the Sugar Mill, I knew immediately that I was going to have a wonderful time. The staff were warm and tended to our every need. The room was very comfortable and the view was spectacular.
