Description:
Access to the Sandcastle is by American Airlines from Puerto Rico to Tortola, or American, Delta or USAir to St. Thomas; then take a ferry to Tortola. From Tortola it's a half-hour small boat trip to the Island of Jost Van Dyke. A good rule of thumb is to pack light and try to avoid dragging along several heavy suitcases for obvious reasons.
The resort fronts on White Bay, with a beautiful, white sandy beach. White Bay is frequented by sailboaters who use the beach and visit the "Soggy Dollar Bar", located at the resort. There is good snorkeling from the beach.
The food is excellent here. The resort specializes in candlelight, gourmet dinners in a very intimate setting. There are 6 units; four cottages, two fronting on the beach and the other two set back about 100 feet, each cooled by the trade winds and two new garden-view rooms which are air-conditioned. The units are comfortably furnished. The cottages have outside enclosed showers that are supplied by rainwater tanks on the roof. You shower in the late afternoon when the water tank has been heated by the sun. The garden-view units have inside hot-water showers.
There are no scheduled activities at Sandcastle, but you can arrange for sailing, fishing or snorkeling/diving expeditions. Small luxury cruise ships and windjammers periodically pull into the bay to let their passengers enjoy the beautiful beach for a few hours. This sometimes makes for a more crowded beach than might be desired in the afternoons, but the beautiful, peaceful and quiet mornings & evenings more than make up for it. And the people watching can be fun.
The resort has a good bar where you can meet interesting visitors from the sailboat crowd. The bar serves an excellent rum drink called a "Painkiller" which was invented here.
Other self-made activities includes hiking over the hill (or taking a land or water taxi) to Great Harbor, where there are several boutiques and the famous "Foxy's" bar and restaurant. There is a ferry from Great Harbour to Tortola for shopping trips. On weekends, a ferry goes from Great Harbor to St. John and St. Thomas.
The resort is very casual, no dressy clothing is needed. This is a small, very laid-back resort that is not for everyone. If you really want to "get away from it all" however, The Sandcastle is a great option.
