This was a great family "get away from it all" place. Visited: April 2008
Posted by facsman
We are a family of four, with two teens 15 and 17. Our stay at the Fort Recovery Villas was an outstanding family vacation.

We booked a two-bedroom lower level villa. The beach was approximately 70 steps from the patio door, and looked out across the Sir Francis Drake Channel to St. John.

The staff was friendly and attentive. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the dining arrangements were elegant.

Also, the snorkel trip to Norman Island on the Fort Recovery boat was a highlight and not to be missed.

We found the atmosphere at Fort Recovery highly restful and authentic. It is a small operation compared to some larger chain resorts. While not offering all the amenities a larger operation could, the sense of location and getting way from it all was superb. It was also located within easy access to West End and Nanny Cay.

A vehicle is recommended for getting around.

It was excellent all around. Visited: March 2008

My husband and our three children (ages 9, 13 and 18) stayed at this hotel in March for 12 days.

We had a lovely stay from start to finish. Pamelah and Matt (hotel office managers) were more than helpful and attentive, very genuine people, friendly and informative.

Our room was great. We stayed in a three-bedroom suite which had a view to die for! We were on the ground level (as opposed to the penthouses they had), and we loved that we were just inches from diving into the water every day which was relaxing!

The beach was small, and perfect. Families with young kids will love this because we didn't notice any rough surf or anything hazardous at the property at all. We were very happy to be able to relax from our deck and watch our youngest daughter playing with the cute puppy "Becky" who seemed to provide hours of entertainment to the kids staying at the hotel.

Service at the restaurant was friendly and generally helpful. It was a little slow, but we were accustomed to the "island time" pace of things from having stayed on Virgin Gorda and Anegada in the past.

Overall, we loved this place and would return in a minute!

This place is great for families. Visited: August 2007

I stayed here in August 2007 with my two kids, husband, sister and her three kids.

This was one of the best family vacations we have ever had. The hotel was prompt in helping us with anything we needed, and they were very warm.

The food was very good and diverse. We never got bored of the menus. We stayed in one three-bedroom, and one one-bedroom ground floor villas. They were very large and beautiful, and extraordinarily clean.

The snorkeling trip with this hotel was great fun, and perfect for what we came for: snorkeling and sightseeing.

Their beach was pleasant, with no crowds or outside public all over. At some points, it was just our family and perhaps two other couples sharing the beach, which was a good size. We swam, and did a little snorkeling off the shore, which was quite good.

We will return to Fort Recovery in the future. It was worth every penny, and we had a memorable time.

Our trip to Tortola was a much needed vacation for my husband and me. We like smaller, non-chain resorts for their personalized and special treatment. Fort Recovery was exactly that.

Our villa was a one-bedroom, and was spacious and well appointed. It was kept perfectly clean and supplied daily. The package was just what we like - with breakfasts and some dinners. The food was gourmet, even for breakfast, with large portions.

I believe Pamelah put together just the perfect mix of people for our week here, and truly that made this Caribbean trip so different from all others we have had. Either she told everyone when to plan to be there, or only wonderful, very nice people choose to go. We laughed, learned, swam, snorkeled and boated together so well.

Pamelah's presence was perfect: there when we needed her but not pushy. She's a very patient yoga teacher for newbies! She arranged our snorkel trip that included a very fun day at the Caves, the Indians, and lunch on the WillyT all from their yacht.

I missed having a microwave in our villa, and it took an extra time to obtain all the snorkel gear they needed to have for our trip, but these minor problems did not really matter in the scope of the great vacation. It is very well worth the price, restful and unhurried.

This was great for recovery from a busy life.

I loved my honeymoon at Fort Recovery. Visited: June 2007
Posted by seashells
I had a really super honeymoon on Tortola. I always wanted to visit a tropical island and stay on the beach. Fort Recovery fit the bill.

My husband and I are very simple people. We like to read, swim, lay in the sun and explore. We opted for the romance package, and were quite pleased.

We enjoyed the snorkeling trip the most, as we saw a ton of fish. The dinners and breakfasts were very good, and we tried some other places, too.

The massage was fabulous. Ivet did a great job, and we joined Pamelah for Yoga twice on the dock and really felt our muscles stretch.

We hope to come back, and recommend it highly for people who love the islands and like to relax.

My husband, three kids (8 year old, 9month and 15 year old) and I had a wonderful time on Tortola.

We got around to all the great spots such as Bombas (kids stayed home for this, but it was a great night out for mom and dad!); and Cane Garden Bay, which was great fun.

We chartered the Fort Recovery boat for a day, and had a blast going to all the different Cays. We stopped at Foxxy's for a BBQ dinner, which was fabulous.

The kids loved being on the water. We spent just about every day on Fort Recovery's beach looking for shells to bring home for our seven-year-old to show her friends, and taking tons of pictures. We ate four nights at the hotel for dinner, which was perfect. The food was great.

We have no complaints, only great memories here. The room was very large (we had a three-bedroom villa suite), and had all the amenities we expected and more. It had a great island charm to it and a homey feel, very personal. Will return to Fort Recovery!

Finally - some rest and relaxation! Visited: December 2006
Posted by upsman
I work hard. I work myself to the bone, barely ever giving myself a time for some R&R. However, last year in December I finally treated myself. I took my family and headed off to the BVI.

I found out about Fort Recovery through their website. What I saw on the website, I saw in person when I arrived.

The rooms were clean, and the view from our balconies were amazing. We were able to go shopping at Soper's, and get on over to the elusive Smuggler's Cove.

The restaurant on the grounds had a wide selection of food. that was nice because I'm a man who doesn't fill up easily. It was all so very good.

Our whole stay was made very comfortable. The staff was warm and agreeable. I'd definitely come back, and I would suggest it to all my friends and family (which I already did!).

Frt Recovery was immaculately clean and very personalized. Visited: July 2006

I stayed at Fort Recovery on the one-week package, and thoroughly enjoyed my stay here (and I loved Tortola).

The one-bedroom my husband and I stayed in was immaculate as it could get. Also, the decor was very personal and unique.

The beach wasn't your typical long, over-crowded, open-to-the-public type of beach. It was just what we wanted - seclusion, intimacy, and the chance to really be together as a family without the hassles of the world stressing us out.

I felt for what the room had in it, it was more than worth the money. We had our own kitchen, a large living room, and all the amenities we needed (TV, AC, and a view to simply die for right outside our patio). Basically, it felt as if we had our own private home in one of the most beautiful places in the world - what more can one ask for?

We definitely will be returning again, next time with our eight-year-old daughter. She would have loved the beach here, and would have gone swimming with the dolphins and many other activites we came across while on Tortola.

This was a marvelous holiday. Visited: July 2006

We arrived in Tortola and were charmed by the island. When we taxied to Fort Recovery, Pamelah showed us to a beautiful, spacious and very clean room with a spectacular view. It was just sunset and we have never forgotten the beauty of the sunset over the water. We walked to the dock and found the whole environment just wonderful. The food in the restaurant was excellent.

The waiter was very attentive. Pamelah was eager to give us all the information we wanted, and every day was filled with pleasure.

We took the ferry to Peter Island, and had a wonderful lunch at the beach. There were so very many day trips to take, each one different from the other, that we were never bored. We shopped for jewelry in Tortola and St. Thomas, and bought lovely things that were really priced right.

We would return at the very next opportunity.

I spent seven days in the sun. The rooms were very clean. The food could not be beat, and the portions were large. Also, the pool was very refreshing.

It was great to snorkel on the boat. I could not have had a better time. In addition, the staff was very friendly, and they have a very clean beach.

What a Wonderful World Visited: July 2006
Posted by lisa5
My experience with this property took place in:
July, 2006
I spent the better part of a week in one of the new villas at Fort Recovery for a family vacation and it was absolutely glorious. I cannot believe how close to the Caribbean the villa is situated. It is practically hanging over the sea. The appointments in the room from the furnishings to the sheets and comfortable king sized bed were perfect. Pamelah and Anita were the absolute best ambassadors of warmth and helpfulness during our stay. They helped us get every day planned out from swimming with dolphins, to eating out (loved Spaghetti Junction, Fat Hog Bobs and Jolly Rodger) to the sightseeing trips (the vistas from Sky World were amazing). And to top it all off, Pamelah taught a yoga class on the dock at sunset suspended over the Caribbean. WOW! This is a trip my family and I will never forget.
Thank you Fort Recovery for helping all of us to recover our sense of wonder. From the rainbow that literally landed outside of our window to the pelicans diving off of our porch, to the pristine sand at Smugglers Cove, this is a trip we will never forget. Fort Recovery makes you feel like you are part of the island and not a tourist, but a Tortolan native. All the stresses from home washed away with the sights and sounds of the crashing waves. This resort on this magical island is not to be missed. The banana bread & eggs made breakfast a delight.
I highly recommend it to anyone who wants in on the BVI's little secrets now, and would rather leave the uptight resort vacations to others. Loved it and will return again and again.

We really enjoyed Fort Recovery.

The three-bedroom penthouse suite we had was awesome! It was very nice to have a place this beautiful to relax after our sailing charter. It was almost like still being on the boat, hearing the waves on the beach all night.

The suite was very clean, nicely decorated, and very comfortable. They had really neat art items, also. The beds were new, the AC was cold, and the kitchen was very complete. They even provided a nice blender for those tropical drinks!

We really enjoyed the dinners served by Perfecto. The food was outstanding, and the service was very special. We were treated like special guests, and we really enjoyed every aspect of our stay. In addition, the complimentry Continental breakfast was just right!

Thank you also for introducing to us to Capt. Paul and his son, Paul. I will keep their number for all of our travels in Tortola. What nice, genuine people. Again, you all made us feel special!

I hope we can stay here again on our next trip.

It was a major disappointment for us. Visited: June 2006
Posted by 1nbct1220
While the facilities at Fort Recovery were as advertised (clean and comfortable), the management made our trip a nightmare.

When we arrived, we found the resort had overbooked, and the room we had reserved months in advance was not available. We were forced, instead, to share a three-bedroom villa with our daughter and her fiance.

The villa itself was lovely, but there were no bedroom doors on the bedrooms, so there was no real privacy if forced to share. When my daughter questioned Pamelah, the concierge, about the room situation, she was told that she could "find someplace else to stay" if the room-sharing was a problem for her. None of us had been notified prior to arrival that room reservations would be a problem. They did, however, cash our deposits.

While we thoroughly enjoyed our time on Tortola, and are planning to return, we would not return to Fort Recovery. There were too many surprises, and too few kept promises.

Another in their party writes:

I thought the management was poor, and the staff seemed overworked. I also believe they overbooked the rooms.

The location was just average, and the beach was not a swimming beach as it was quite rocky and choked with grass.

There are much nicer locations on the island for the price.

Managment Reply

As Manager, I feel that it is necessary to respond to this review.

I believe the problems began when this group thought the taxi drivers
overcharged them when they arrived in St. Thomas and again in Tortola. We
reassured them that for the amount of people and luggage the rate seemed
reasonable however, I am not sure they agreed.

Most brides-to-be that have stayed with us welcome the opportunity to be
upgraded and occupy one of our larger 3 - 4 bedroom villas that will
accommodate them and the bridal party comfortably to help her prepare for
her special day. This was not the case here however and we later learned
that the bride and "husband to be" wanted their own villa. We are really
sorry about this and publicly apologize for assuming it would be well
received.

The attitude of these guests did not lighten up. It was apparent that they
were not thrilled to be there for whatever reason. I must add, however, the
day of the wedding the bridal party looked stunning and the sit down dinner
went extremely well - with no complaints.

We take the reviews on Where to Stay seriously and as I mentioned above I
feel it is necessary to acknowledge them to give the public our side of the
story. We always try to accommodate the needs of our guests - we value their
business and know their "stay" with us should be a relaxing, rewarding
experience in their otherwise busy life. There are times, however, when no
matter how much we do - or try - there is just no way to please when a guest
has a preconceived point of view.

My wife and I returned to Fort Recovery after staying here in 1989. We found it ideal the first time, and even better the second time.

Pamelah, (the manager) remembered us, and once again made our stay wonderful.

This was not only a very calm and peaceful location, but very friendly. You can decide to be left to your own devices, or join with other guests on excursions. Any requests we had, whether it be a rental jeep, a sailing charter, or a good meal, was met.

My wife and I have great memories of our stays at Fort Recovery, and have made a pact to return again, much sooner this time!

We stayed at Fort Recovery with no negitive mishaps, I am glad to report. After reading the unfortunate reviews posted in December 2005, I was a little apprehensive.

The continental breakfast was good, and the dinners were good. The only thing was they did not have all the menu items every night.

There is no place I think you could stay for $2,000 with the amenities that they have here, though. Fort Recovery was worth it, and I would go back.

This is a wonderful island resort with something for everyone - yoga at sunset; great pedicures; or a day of snorkeling.

Fort Recovery offers amazing sunsets and views of St. John.

All the original accommodations are charming, comfortable and well kept. We viewed the new rooms, and the facilities are modern and beautiful.

For the price, this is one of the best accommodations on the island.

As for the staff, they make us feel like family. All staff members are gracious and accommodating in every way.

This is the perfect place for a true laid-back Caribbean vacation; a great location, lovely accomdations, and wonderful staff.

Did I mention we love this place and keep returning year after year?

We thought the accommodations were disgraceful for the amount they charged. Visited: December 2005

When I spoke to Pamaleh on the phone, I was told that I would be the first to stay in their brand new villa. When we arrived, I was told that the new villa was not available, and we would be staying in the "Penthouse".

The "Penthouse" turned out to be a one-bedroom villa greatly in need of major repairs to be considered habitable. The toilet kept running, unless we flushed it. Then, it would block and flood the villa below us.

The bedroom window cranks were rusted or broken and would not allow us to open any of the four windows. We were forced to use the A/C (also in need of repair), and it kept us up most of the night because of the loud noise that it made.

When we turned on the bathroom light, a fan came on that sounded very much like a jet taking off. When we asked that the fan be disconnected or repaired, they brought us a table lamp to put on the bathroom counter so we would not have to use the light switch.

Also, the verticals would not close, and the towel bar would not stay on the wall even though someone very kindly filled the hole in the wall with toilet paper to try and keep it in place.

For the price they are charging for this "Penthouse", it really should be in better condition. Have the people at Fort Recovery been off the island recently to compare the accommodations that they are offering with the basic standards that most hotels insist on?

Yes, the view from our "penthouse" was lovely, but nothing else was.

It was just awful, awful, awful. Visited: December 2005
Posted by aokun
We have traveled all over the world, and this was the worst managed hotel at which we've ever had the displeasure to stay.

1) Don't believe the web site. We found there was no restaurant on site, the beach was full of seaweed, and there were no water sports. Also, we found the rooms to be dumpy.

(2) They expected to have new construction open before our arrival, but did not, so the resort was overbooked. They moved several couples into the "big house" -- then kept telling us all week that they did us a huge favor -- even though if we had not moved, they were going to have to put people up in hotels.

(3) We found Pamelah, the manager of the resort, to be extraordinarily difficult to deal with. For instance, she informed us upon our arrival on Sunday that we were scheduled for a boat tour on Thursday at 11. We sat waiting on the dock, but no captain arrived. We asked Pamelah and were told that there was a delay of 15 minutes.

We waited another half an hour, then checked again. It was only then that we discovered that Pamelah had never informed the boat captain or arranged for the boat tour. After we had asked the first time, she called him to see if he was available. We had 12 people plus a toddler waiting on a dock for a tour that was never arranged.

(4) They claimed to have babysitting -- this means you have to ask around among the housekeeping staff to see if anyone is available to babysit.

(5) the massage, manicure and pedicure services consisted of one woman in a back room available for a couple of appointments a day.

(6) the toilets were backed up and leaking during much of our stay, and no one in management seemed to care.

(7) my husband was almost electrocuted (he received a shock that sent him flying across the room) when he was changing seven different lightbulbs throughout the villa since we had no light in most of our rooms. When we reported no lights, we were given a bunch of lightbulbs and told to change them ourselves.

(8) The air conditioning units were being installed as we moved into the villa and did not work.

(9) When we arrived with our toddler and first learned that there was no food available on site, my husband walked to a store to find something to feed her for dinner. We couldn't cook it because the resort was out of gas for the stoves.

(10) We had originally requested a crib for our daughter. We returned it after three days. The resort refused to take the nightly crib charge off of our bill for the nights we did not use it.

I would never return to Fort Recovery. I've read some other reviews and noticed some good reviews for the resort. I'm wondering if they were self-written by the Fort Recovery management.

Bravo Fort Recovery! Visited: September 2004

My partner and I decided to take a trip back to Tortola. After investigating our options, we decided on Fort Recovery.

We arrived late evening and we were greeted by Pamelah, our Concierge, who was warm and welcoming and couldn’t have been more helpful. She immediately showed us to our suite, which was private, immaculate, and had a glorious view of the beach.

Waking the next morning, I finally got to see the beauty of Fort Recovery. It was more than I had expected. It was breathtaking. The grounds were brimming with lush foliage, and beautifully manicured by a staff of hardworking locals.

Fort Recovery overlooked a body of water that was immaculate, warm, blue and very inviting. I found housekeeping to be most helpful making sure all our needs were met and rooms kept spotless.

Our accommodations were equipped with a full kitchen, but found it unusual there was no dining room. To our delight, we realized that we were going to be served our three-course dinners in our room. Lighting candles for atmosphere, we enjoyed our sumptuous dinners, course-by-course. Homemade soups, bread and desserts were a real treat. I had a NY Sirloin that was thick, delicious and grilled to perfection topped off by my favorite…mango cheesecake.

A highpoint of the trip was our boat trip to snorkel around Norman Island and the Indians. Our Captain Collins made sure we were all well taken care of and safe during our journey. Another surprise was stopping for lunch at “The Willie T”, an old pirate ship docked out in the middle of the ocean. Food and fun in the middle of the ocean on a glorious sunny day! What more could I ask for?

Mornings, waking up to the beauty of the magnificent view and the blue ocean, was a delight one can only experience for themselves. The Continental Breakfasts consisted of a variety of freshly-baked muffins, hard-boiled eggs, toast with jam, orange juice, coffee or tea. I found that eating three egg whites and two chocolate muffins daily, I lost several pounds while I was here. Could this be the start of a new diet craze…The Fort Recovery Diet?

As our package included a massage and manicure/pedicure, we planned one day to get pampered by the spa staff. Elizabeth was on call the day we were there and gave us both a massage that rivaled some of the best here in NY. I then had a relaxing manicure and pedicure.

If you’re looking for a tension-free, relaxing, no-stress atmosphere, where you are well taken care of and pampered…this is definitely for you! Whether you come with a spouse, significant other or the entire family, this is a sure bet, a real find, and a winner! Thank you to Pamelah and the Staff of Fort Recovery in helping make our trip a truly memorable one.
