1.0 stars STAY AWAY Visited: November 2009
Posted by medstaff35
Prebooked 3 nights. Apon arrival told no restaurant. Get to our room by walking by many chickens running around unkept grounds. Walk up rusty staircase to find our room with no lights, lamps, rusty sink, toilet, tub. Switch rooms....use all beach towles packed to cover bed need sleep and no where else to go. People very rude and not helpful. Best thing, internet, next ferry to St. Thomas Bolongo Bay

1.0 stars A real dump with no amenities Visited: December 2004

the outside is beautiful.. but that is it..there was 1 wash cloth and 2 thin towels per room with 2 people. I chair that was very difficult to sit in ...tv was a joke.. no ice machines, no vending machines, restaurant only open a couple hours a day, bar was the same. there are signs indicating shops towards the pool area which are totally empty and not in good shape. Gift shop only open when the proprietor feels the urge...no refrigerator in room ... bed was very uncomfortable. blanket must have been 50 years old... I give Prospect reef a 0 star rating ...would never stay there again and advise all others to stay away as well. Price is too high... went to Heritage Inn on the hill..great view..all emenities and cheaper...

3.0 stars Not as promised. Visited: October 2002

We just returned from Prospect Reef and while we love Tortola, we would not stay at the Reef again. "We don't do that anymore" seemed to be the standard response to most questions. We were told that the Callaloo at Peter Island was closed due to hurricane damage (that meant no shuttle to the private beach there also). Yet when we called a few days before leaving home to ask what the dinner dress was there they didn't tell us it was closed. Taxi drivers also told us how lucky they were because there were no hurricanes this year! We had to take cabs to a beach and the going rate was $36 per couple round trip.

There was no reception with food and entertainment, no dolphin program, no daily newsletter, no Callaloo at the Reef only the Scuttlebutt Pub, the catamaran No Fear was broken, the pool hot tub was empty, the refrigerator/mini bar in the room did not work - all minor, but since they were part of the appeal of the package, it was disappointing.

We enjoyed our time at this beautiful property and are fairly adaptable people who understand that things do not always happen as planned - perhaps during the high season things are better. We hope so.

Tortola is not to be missed. It is a beautiful island with warm friendly people and not spoiled with loads of tourists, fast food places or casinos. We will go back, just not to Prospect Reef.

3.0 stars Offered convenience and quality service. It was Paradise. Visited: April 2002

We visited Prospect Reef in mid-April 2002 as a gift for viewing a timeshare presentation in Aruba. Prospect Reef was the largest resort on Tortola and was a mix of rental units and timeshare units.

We decided not to upgrade from a standard Garden Room since they were the only rental units that were air-conditioned. We were first placed in a non-renovated room. If this happens, be sure to complain! The room was falling apart, and we were quickly moved to a renovated room near the front of the resort. It was like night and day.

Our new room, 313, was nice sized with a queen-sized bed, new furniture, a renovated bathroom and a fax machine. However, there were constant maintenance problems with this older resort. They were trying hard to keep on top of things.

Among the problems were a loss of hot water, a clogged toilet, a loss of half our cable TV channels (5 out of 11), and mini bar/refrigerator that wasn't cold. However, we had no problems with electricity and our room had an air-conditioner as well as a ceiling fan. Water pressure, however, is pretty lousy.

The resort does offer a lot of amenities. There's two restaurants, one casual that has a breakfast buffet and one fancy, as well as a bar. There's a dolphin swim program (but it costs $150.00), a PADI dive program, daily trips to Peter Island for $20 and catamaran trips that can be booked through the resort. They leave a daily newsletter in your room's mailbox each day. There's also a European style spa. There's a swim program but we weren't impressed by the pool. There's also no real beach, just a salt water pool with some chairs and hammocks nearby.

However, the location is great, just minutes from Road Town. You can walk to a nearby market and it's a short drive or cab ride to the ferry dock, lots of restaurants and the Crafts Alive marketplace.

There was a nice welcome reception with champagne and food, even though the point is to get you to view their timeshare units. The staff were friendly and there's always an open-air cab waiting if you don't rent a car (but it you do, be sure to rent a 4-wheel drive for the roads are STEEP).

Tortola is the real Caribbean experience and you won't find chain anything, no fast-food and no hotel chains. Everything is locally owned and life moves at its own tropical pace. So luxury is relative, and Prospect Reef, while no Marriott, is an acceptable if not luxurious place to stay.

4.0 stars Honeymoon in Paradise Visited: May 2001
Posted by alilee17
After seeing the ad in Bridal Guide Magazine, I called Prospect Reef Resort and Shirley helped my boyfriend and I make reservations for our honeymoon. We are so happy we were able to go to the British Virgin Islands for our honeymoon. It was relaxing and beautiful. We had a wonderful time.

The staff at the resort was so friendly and Chris the concierge made sure we had a new adventure everyday while we were at Prospect Reef. Snorkeling and sailing just to begin with. We also really enjoyed dinner at Peter Island. The food was spectacular and it was very romantic.

We highly recommend Prospect Reef for couples wanting to go there for their honeymoon and we even plan on going back as soon as we can.

3.0 stars Somewhat disappointing; beware of the sales pitch. Visited: February 2001

I was looking forward to going to Prospect Reef and was somewhat disappointed in what I found.

First, they seemed desperate to sign people up to buy time shares. I'd only been there for about 20 minutes when the guy at the desk tried to interest me in attending one of their sales talks so that I could find out all about buying a place there. Although I said I wasn't interested, a salesperson woke me up with a phone call the next morning at 8:20 a.m., again to try to get me to attend one of their sales meetings about buying a unit there. I thought that was extremely rude and annoying.

As for the rooms, the Admiral studio looked pretty nice on the web site but in person it looked kind of grim. The upper loft (where the bed is) was small and dark with a low ceiling. The downstairs had a mini-fridge, but not a kitchen and the furniture needed refurbishing. The 1-bedroom suite was nicer, but was a lot more expensive.

Also, I kept on being told, "We don't do that anymore." I had read that the Prospect Reef Hotel had complimentary shuttles to the beaches, but when I asked, I was told that they don't do that anymore. This means that you’ll have the added expense of either renting a car or taking a taxi (around $18 per person round trip) to go to the beach as there isn't one within walking distance. Also, unlike some hotels that lend out snorkel gear to their guests, I was told "we don't do that anymore except when out on one of their Peter Island trips," which costs $20 US p/p.

A few more negatives were that the kiddie pool seemed to be totally dry/not in use at the time I was there. If you are a light sleeper, you may have trouble staying asleep through the constant morning cock-a-doodle-dooing from the roosters that walk around freely. Personally, I think they added charm to the place.

Some good points were that the showers had great water pressure, a well-equipped kitchen in the suite, a very nice view from the outdoor sitting areas, and good food and service at the Callaloo restaurant. Road Town and the ferry dock were long but manageable walks from the hotel and most of the hotel personnel seemed nice.

4.0 stars We had a great time at Prospect Reef. Visited: April 2000

Although pictures of this resort online weren't too appealing, the place was comfortable. The resort and rooms could have been updated because they were a little dirty, but the people were very nice. Service was great and the staff was incredible.

We are planning to return because we had such a good time.

4.0 stars Excellent way to end a visit to the BVI Visited: December 1969
Posted by ATraveler
Our last three days in the BVI were spent at this resort. It provided beautiful accommodations and a very friendly staff, particularly, Donna, the bar tender. The resort had a terrific salt water pool (in addition to a fresh water pool and hot tub). Our room was beautifully situated immediately adjacent to the small beach located on the resort grounds. It was a great way to complete our two weeks in the BVI.
