This was the perfect place Visited: June 2007
Posted by birgit_feldmann
We stayed at Biras Creek eight years ago for the first time. We liked it very much. However, at that time, the rooms were run down and we decided not to come back.

In between, we looked for the perfect place to relax and rewind (Peter Island, Old Bahama Bay, Curtain Bluff, etc.).

We heard about the change of management. So, we gave them a new chance. We hoped they hadn't changed the good things we liked so much (no loud families, no misbehaving yacht people, like in Peter Island - and we liked especially the food).

What we got was the perfect getaway we were looking for.
They left the good things as they were (gorgeous staff, friendly and helpful, the food even better than before) and improved the worse ones, like the rooms.

After ten days, we felt both we found our perfect little paradise. We look forward to return next year.

This is the perfect place to stay for your dream BVI trip! Visited: April 2007
Posted by tinaandricky
We decided to divide our trip into a four-night stay here, and a three-night stay on Tortolla. The service, amenities, room, and food were all a top "10".

We stayed in late April, and had rainy days and sunny ones. A four-night stay meant Biras came and get us at no extra charge. This helped because we needed to bring enough money to account for taxis, ferries, etc. Think $500 to $600.

Our rates were lower since it was off season, and we still enjoyed spectacular sevice and great food. Items like fresh towels for the beach, picnic lunches or fresh cookies delivered to our room made us feel like we were in our own Caribbean estate.

The private beach was not crowded, and Hobie cats and lasers were free to take out. We had bikes to carry us down flower-filled paths, and a pool which overlooked the Atlantic Ocean to swim in. Also, on the harborfront were free Boston Whalers to take to snorkel or just ride around in.

We also walked to Bitter End Yacht Club, which was 15 minutes away. If you go, Mike or Chelsea will personally greet you upon arrival. Monique, Arlene or Captain Ernest will provide outstanding service, while Nina may take beautiful care of your room.

Our room was on the ocean. We enjoyed hearing the waves lap at about 15 feet from the room, and the stars shone at night. Our bath robes with fresh flowers awaited us, and we ordered a bottle of white wine for the room. We also had a great outdoor shower, and a confortable and luxurious bed.

The cocktail party on Monday night allowed us to meet our fellow guests and make new friends.

You need to save your pennies to come here. However, when you take in consideration all the meals, watersports, divine service, quiet beach, and no small screaming children combined with a gorgeous tropical setting; (whew) are included, you will realize (like me!) that you made the right choice. Here, you will truly know what it is like to be treated like a real Caribbean princess.

What a perfect trip! It was restful and relaxing. Visited: May 2004

I did quite a bit of research before picking Biras Creek. We knew we wanted to try Virgin Gorda after several trips to Tortola. We considered The Bitter End as well as Little Dix Bay, but decided on Biras. We were happy we did, the resort looked just like all the pictures in the brochure and website.

Each suite was in a duplex and was very secluded. The hotel was full, but we never saw nor heard our neighbors. The view was fantastic and the room spotless. We found two complementary robes and a complementary selection of drinks in our refrigerator. The bedroom was air conditioned. Two bicycles were provided for getting around the resort.

Meals were quite good. Breakfast started at 8:00 am, lunch at 1:00 pm and dinner at 7:00 pm. Lunch was a buffet on the beach most days. Dinner featured a rotating menu with several appetizer and entrée choices. There was entertainment on three nights: Saturday a steel band, and on Tuesday and Thursday, a solo singer. We enjoyed great sunsets at the bar before dinner.

The resort had numerous activities available. There was a resident assistant in the restaurant each morning, to help you with tours, diving or reserve a Boston Whaler dinghy to run about the North Sound. There were lots of nice secluded beaches, several had good snorkeling. Biras will pack a lunch to take with you if you let them know the night before. Tuesday morning, Dive BVI holds a free resort course in the pool. After completing this, you can go out on a reef dive for about $100.

On the property, there were numerous paths that guests could hike and beautiful gardens to enjoy. Several paths go up the mountain and one goes to the Bitter End Yacht Club.

On the beach there were numerous rafts, hobie cats, sunfish, windsurfers and kayaks. There was an instructor to assist you at no charge. The beach was not crowded and was peaceful. One evening we took a sunset sail. There was also a shuttle boat that can take you to main road to meet a taxi or pick up a rental car.

The only thing we didn’t like was leaving Biras Creek. It was beautiful and quiet. The room was very clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. Everything was perfect.

We have traveled the Caribbean extensively for the past 25 years ... St.Croix, St. John, St. Thomas, St. Martin, Antigua, and other islands. Last year we had a wonderful family vacation at a four-bedroom villa on Mahoe Bay in Virgin Gorda, BVI. We had a delightful experience and quickly fell in love with this beautiful, unspoiled, and "friendly" island.

As we were preparing to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary, we searched for a way that we could return to this lovely place ... but this time we wanted a sophisticated, yet casual and very private resort atmosphere. We found it all at Biras Creek.

Overly commercialized vacation spots don't appeal to us and we know that the Caribbean doesn't cater to the "brass and glass" hotel crowd. So we weren’t surprised that Biras was just a bit on the “rustic side”.

Biras Creek was just perfect ... isolated and not overdone, but with all the amenities. The views were breathtaking; the hiking trails were great fun; the food was four-star; the staff was friendly; and the accommodations were very nicely done. Most importantly, we were left alone. The staff was available when we needed them, but they didn’t “hover”.

The acid test came when we were departing and we decided whether this was a place that we would consider for a return visit. The answer was "absolutely"! This excellent resort was on par with our stay at Jumby Bay in Antigua a few years ago ... and that's saying a lot.

Thanks to the entire Biras Creek staff for making our anniversary celebration so memorable. We will return!

A very beautiful and relaxing place to stay. Visited: May 2003

Biras Creek was great. My husband and I came here for our fifth anniversary and had a wonderful time. It was very private and secluded, so if you're looking for a romantic getaway, this is perfect. There was not any night-life to speak of, so if that's what you're looking for, this is not the place.

We took out a Boston whaler one day, which Biras offered complimentary. We went to Honeymoon Beach, which was a very small, but secluded beach. There we enjoyed a picnic lunch (provided by Biras) and snorkeling all afternoon alone.

I enjoyed the hiking trails a lot. The trails were definitely for hiking, as they were narrow and included steep areas and quite a bit of climbing obstacle-like on rocks. The trails were very well marked and maintained. The longest one was definitely not for the out of shape.

Our suite was very nice. There was a nice sitting room with a refrigerator, CD player, phone and coffee maker. The bedroom had air-conditioning and a nice king-size bed. We really enjoyed the outdoor shower attached to the bathroom. It was a little strange to shower outside at first, but we quickly got used to it. We were steps away from the ocean, which gave us a gorgeous view from our patio.

The food was wonderful, very high-end. However, we were not used to eating such rich food, so for a few meals we headed down to Fat Virgin Cafe where we had great burgers and home fries. It really hit the spot!

There were a few things that could be improved upon. First, every night for dinner more formal attire was required. That was fine with me because I love dressing up. The thing I didn't like was that any route we took to the restaurant was a dirt path until we reached the restaurant. I would have a pair of nice heels on, and as we walked up to dinner I had constant sand in my shoes until I could get where I could brush it all out. I didn't mind it so much during the day in casual clothes/shoes, but when you're dressed up at night, it just didn't seem right.

The other complaint I had was the attitude of some of the employees at the resort. I realize that in the Caribbean, there is a laid-back attitude, but we often encountered behavior that seemed rather rude to me. Many couldn't even conjure up a smile for us. Several times when we went to order our picnic lunch for the next day, we felt like we were bothering the woman as she slowly took our order. There were a handful of people who were always very nice and friendly, though, and we really appreciated that.

All in all, Biras was a great place to stay and I would definitely recommend it.

Everything was great. I could have stayed another week. It was the perfect balance between being quiet and very private, and having enough to do if we were feeling motivated.

We loved the Boston Whalers - a great relaxing way to see the BVIs. The grounds were beautiful. We only went on one hike, but wish we did them all.

Biras Creek was the perfect combination of isolation and amenities. We found a unique mix of everything here!

The rooms were located on the ocean, so they were very breezy (no bugs), and the sound of the ocean was incredible. The beach was very quiet and we had a ball enjoying all of the water toys and the fabulous lunches at the beach.

The Marina area served as the launching pad for our daily excursions on the gratis Boston whalers. We found this a wonderful perk as it allowed us not only the ablilty to find our own special snorkeling areas, but allowed us to explore the waters daily. We walked almost every day ( and night ) to the Bitter End yacht club and found that to be an interesting diversion.

We played tennis almost every morning (bring your own racquets if you are particular). We were a little concerned we would feel hemmed in, spending a week here, but we found ourselves very happy with the hiking, boating and eating that we did. We did rent a motorboat for the day, and the resort was very accommodating.

While we were here, we enjoyed the port and cheese after dinner and had a wonderful time meeting some wonderful new friends. I hope you choose this special place. Enjoy this truly special place.

A quiet, secluded and refreshing getaway. Visited: February 2003

The review from New York explained it perfectly. We were blown away with the views and amenities.

If you are looking for a place to relax and refresh yourself - this is it. The views are great and the accommodations are perfect. You can move at your own pace and the service meets your every need.

I do not think I have been anywhere where the people could have been nicer and more helpful. If you want night life, go somewhere else and don't try to bring it to this place. Let's leave it like it is.

Biras Creek is a small and casually elegant resort where grownups, mostly friendly international couples, go to play and relax.

There is gentle live music during dinner a few nights per week, but no wild bar/singles scene (it’s possible to visit a few nearby nightspots).

The property sits on a hilly isthmus straddling three bodies of water: Berchers Bay, which the rooms overlook, is a beautiful rocky beach on the windward side. Coral reefs and large surf mean it is not for swimming. They also mean the view is spectacular, the cool trade winds are not blocked by land or foliage and the sound of waves breaking on the reef is your nightly lullaby.

One rides bikes (parked at your bungalow when you arrive, charming baskets for your stuff) to the swim beach about three-quarters of a mile away on Deep Bay. The bike ride is easy and fun.

I’m no Iron Man triathlete, but am reasonably active and one reason I found Biras so wonderful was the wealth of activities: If the notion of pedaling five minutes to the swim beach is intimidating, you might consider a different resort.

The swim beach is lovely and not crowded, as it is basically accessible only to Biras guests and there are never more than 60. It has free sailboats, windsurfers and sea kayaks (lessons if you need them), hammocks, big palm frond umbrellas for shade and a bar built over the water where a fantastic barbecue is served MWF.

The third body of water is the North Sound, where one catches the ferry and boats for the many excursions the resort offers. This also is where guests can check out complimentary motorized dinghies for short trips to secluded beaches around the North Sound.

Served in the main building high on a hill overlooking all three bodies of water, the food is as spectacular as the vista. I had assumed the impressive menus on the Biras website were overblown, but they actually were quite representative of the ambitious creations the chef somehow cranks out seven days a week.

There is ample staff and the service is attentive. One might have to remind the waitress about the coffee one ordered with dessert or to bring the (spectacular) wine list. But if that sort of thing makes you apoplectic, you’d do well to avoid the Caribbean altogether.

We stayed in one of the Ocean Suites about 25 feet from the water’s edge, and the room and terrace were great; and of course the outdoor showers were fantastic!

I chose Biras because it appeared to offer a unique and breathtakingly beautiful location, amazing food and great opportunities to recreate and relax. I definitely was not disappointed.

Nice, But Not Worth It Visited: November 2002
Posted by Angela_Sherer
My husband and I got married at Biras Creek in mid-November 2002, and neither of us felt that the resort lived up to its reputation or price.

First, the food is fabulous, and the dining room at night is quite enchanting. But after seven days of rich foods, I requested a sandwich and chips at lunch. While I got what I requested, I also felt that I also got a glare and the silent treatment from the waitress. Isn't Biras supposed to be all about gracious service?

As for accommodations, the views are lovely, and the bathrooms are so neat. But beware the mosquitoes! We didn't think the bugs would be a problem, until we were shown the complimentary bug spray and citronella burners in our room. The cottages are in sore need of renovation and repair, and having air conditioning only in the bedroom became a real sticking point. Imagine trying to dress for dinner every night, let alone for your wedding, in a humid open-air bathroom.

But if spotty service, rustic accommodations, biting bugs, and lack of air conditioning don't bother you, here are the things that really marred the trip for us:

1. Biras scheduled a second wedding on the same day we were getting married, and that couple wanted to be married the same time and place that we did. We had been told that we could choose our location and time of day after we arrived. But when we met the wedding planner and told her we wanted to be married in the morning, we found out about the other couple. We ended up being rushed through our wedding to make way for theirs.

2. To beat everything else, they took our cake and champagne away while we were having photos taken, so they could setup for the next couple! Why would they schedule two weddings for the same day, anyway?

3. During check-out, my husband noticed that they'd erroneously charged us for hundreds of dollars in long-distance calls. They tried to say that it must be right because it was on the bill! When they finally produced our phone record, it only listed three calls for a total of less than twenty dollars.

4. Finally, Biras charged the stay to our credit card three times.

So what did we enjoy enough about this trip to make it "nice"? The food, watching thunderstorms roll in off the ocean, relaxing on a quiet beach, meeting some interesting fellow-honeymooners, a trip to Anegada, and our great photos.

It was very nice, but not perfect. Visited: August 2002
Posted by shane
Upon arrive in Tortolla, we were taken straight from the airport to a dock where a boat was ready to take us to Biras. This process went flawlessly as we did not have to wait at all. We were in our room at Biras within an hour of landing.

When we reached Biras, Sarah (a general assistant) met us at the pier. Sarah gave us a tour of the resort on her golf cart. The tour was great and so was our room. We had booked a garden cottage, but received an upgrade to an ocean cottage.

This was the closest we have ever been to the ocean. Waves lapped about 15 feet from our patio. This was a great touch. The cottages were nice, but not fancy. The bedroom did have air conditioning which worked all but one night. We like it pretty cold, so that one night was pretty hot to us. I called the front desk about 9:00 pm, but the maintenance person had already gone. To my surprise, no one was on call and I had to wait until the next day before someone came to look at the a/c.

I highly recommend the excursions. Biras offered a free snorkeling trip three times a week. This was a great way to see some of the best spots around the North Sound. We also went to St. Thomas. The boat ride alone was well worth the trip. During the 1.5 hour journey, you get a great tour of all of the Virgin Islands. Be warned, St. Thomas is very busy and not at all peaceful and relaxing. But if you want a little change of pace, a greasy hamburger, and some great shopping-- this is a great trip. Another excursion you do not want to miss is the Baths. If you enjoy snorkeling, the Baths offers a beautiful underwater show.

The food at Biras was very good. Menu selections varied from day-to-day. We would have liked more of a variety for the desserts. We got a choice of ice cream or sorbet (the flavors never changed) or the chef's special. All-in-all, the meals were great, especially the seafood and the beach barbeque.

The only other complaint about Biras was the service. The service was spotty at times. One of the bartenders did not know how to make a drink that was even on their bar menu. Then, she argued with me about it. At dinner, I ordered coffee with dessert and never received it on a couple of occasions. Granted, these were very small instances, but they do begin to add up, especially with the mandantory service charge.

Biras was a great, peaceful place. I am sure you will enjoy it, but don't expect it to be perfect.

We had a happy honeymoon. Visited: July 2002
Posted by niki_hunter
We honeymooned for a week at Biras Creek and - for the most part - found it to be a very enjoyable place to be. We chose Biras because we were looking for a place that had the amenities of a resort, but that was small, casual, and rustic enough to be an intimate getaway. If you are looking for a similar style, Biras will be perfect for you.

The food at Biras was divine. We ate three gourmet meals every day, and my husband especially enjoyed the beach barbeques. I found the menu choices to be satisfactory, even for a somewhat picky eater like me. If you are looking for a totally casual (ie, flip flops and shorts) vacation, be warned that there is a dress code for dinner.

The service we received at Biras was usually excellent. We were especially pleased with the welcome we received from Guy and Kate, the extra help learning to windsurf with Chris, and the friendliness of the bartenders and some of the wait staff. Most of the people we met were happy to go above and beyond the call of duty to make us comfortable. But we found that some members of the Biras staff seemed rather lethargic and aloof. The waiter or waitress who was assigned to your table at meals determined whether you received prompt, thorough, and friendly service... or not.

The Biras gardens and beaches were beautiful, and we had lots of fun exploring them on our bikes (provided by the hotel). One thing that surprised us when we arrived was that the beach on which the cottages were situated was not safe for swimming since it is home to a lot of rocks, coral, and even a shipwreck! The swimming beach was a short bike ride away to Deep Bay, which we found to be very pleasant, well-kept, and shaded with palm trees.

I found the seaweed which grew a few yards from the shore to be unpleasant to walk through, but my husband was not bothered by it. The hiking trails were great and will reward you with gorgeous vistas of Virgin Gorda, but you may want to skip this part if you are squeamish about reptiles (the snakes and lizards, although harmless, will outnumber you a million to one).

All things considered, we were very happy at Biras Creek and were glad we chose it as our honeymoon destination.

Beware! Once you go to Biras Creek, no other Caribbean or ocean resort will ever make you happy again.

Biras Creek has it all – solitude and relaxation, water activities galore (if you want), congenial staff and fellow guests, fantastic food and views to remember for a lifetime.

“Casual elegance” is the key of this hotel’s charm. The “castle” and 33 secluded guest cottages are positioned so as to reap the cool ocean breezes while providing stunning views of Gorda Sound and the luxury yachts at anchor. Guests bicycle down short sandy avenues to reach the idyllic private beach and the marina.

Things not to be missed: a garden tour with Alvin; hiking the hill trails for 360-degree views of Virgin Gorda; your own private snorkeling and beach excursions using the hotel’s complimentary hobie cats and boston whalers; early morning swims in the ocean-side pool; chatting over cocktails in the open air lounge; a sunset sail on the Mary Irene.

The staff clearly takes pride in the hotel and is, without exception, friendly and helpful. We especially appreciate Lennox, Guy and Kate. Finally, the food is as good as any we have enjoyed in five-star restaurants in New York, LA or DC.

All in all, Biras Creek seems like a stay at a private Caribbean estate, complete with teary hugs and goodbyes at the dock on departure.

First and foremost, the food at Biras is terrific. It compares to the finest restaurants in Manhattan. The cottages were perfect; I especially enjoyed the veranda. There is no shortage of activities to indulge in or simply have your way with a hammock.

The service is wonderful and the facility is quite elegant, but it is casual as well. No one seemed too interested in monitoring the signing in and out of snorkeling gear or Boston Whalers, and the library's policy of "take-a-book, leave-a-book" is classic laid-back BVI. There are no room keys.

Finally, the General Manager, Michael, was a great host (even though I continually called him Steve). Biras is awesome, far superior to many "gold list" resorts.

I am a travel agent and have been all over the Carribean. I have never, ever found another place like Biras. It was an amazingily friendly, take-all-your-worries-away type of place.

The meals were amazing!

We learned to sail ourselves with their helpful employees. You could even take out your own motor boat to explore all the surrounding islands for free. Pineapple Island was our favorite. Just my husband and I were there surrounded by the crystal-clear waters!

It was the perfect vacation, especially for a romantic trip or honeymoon!

Heaven has competition at Biras! Visited: May 2001

My husband and I just returned from our "planned elopement" to Biras. We chose this resort after much exhaustive research including interviewing travel agents and previous guests. (Thanks WhereToStay.com!) We chose Biras for the lack of children’s facilities, reputation for fantastic food and the beautiful setting.

We were unprepared to have our high expectations so completely exceeded. It was so much better than we could have hoped. The wedding was beautiful. Cleo assured me it would not rain, and it didn't. The food was absolutely amazing. The views were stunning. The staff was fantastic. Victoria and Joanna (General Assistants) were tireless and always cheerful, even when we ran into them off duty and off property.

If you go to Biras (and you should) definitely take the day trips. They cost a little extra, but the trips to Anegada and Jost Van Dyke were wonderful. A great way to meet other guests, form friendships and see the beautiful BVI.

Biras will see us again.

If you are looking for a romantic hideaway without the kids, this is the place to be. Our first trip to BVI, let alone Biras Creek and I would do the same trip all over again.

The staff is more than delightful and helpful, you feel very safe in this inclusive getaway, food is fabulous (expect to gain a pound or two!) but expect to exercise, as well.

There is great hiking, biking (which comes with the cottage), water sports and you should take advantage of it all. When the sun is out, it is fabulous, but hot this time of year. We unfortunately had 2.5 days of rain but took advantage of the natural surroundings in whatever weather.

We highly recommend Biras. We were told that if this was our first trip down here and Biras is where we stayed, that we have been spoiled by Biras and should not expect that at any other resort in the BVI. You must go.

My husband and I went to Tortolla to elope, and ended up in paradise at Biras Creek. With a one day notice and an opening at their resort, we changed our whole plans, and had the most wonderful time of our lives.

The food was great, the accommodations were wonderful. The staff was wonderful; sometimes slow. However, that is the Caribbean. It was very pricey; however, it was worth every cent of the money.

We will return to Biras Creek again.

My mom, dad, and I went to Biras and although it was extremely windy and the water was cold, I really enjoyed myself. I talked to a few other guests and they said they had been to the islands for 10 to 15 years in a row and it had never been this bad, so don't worry.

The rooms were great, the food was fabulous and the staff were just awesome! This would be an absolutely romantic place for newlyweds on their honeymoon, too! It was very secluded and beautiful. Another thing I really liked was how you went to sleep with the sound of the waves. Every night I fell asleep in a snap and woke up with the rising sun.
