Description:
White Bay is one of the most beautiful beaches in all of the islands. At the eastern end of the beach, Ivan Chinnery has one of the best campgrounds in the Virgin Islands. Ivan is a local celebrity known for his courtesy and musical ability. He played in Ruben's Original Fungi Band in the 1970's that also featured Foxy (who owns Foxy's - the most famous bar in theCaribbean and only a walk over the hill).
The campground features sites with 5 small cabins, 3 larger cabins, 5 tents and 15 campsites. Visitors love it because it is right on the beach and near to Ivan's Local Flavor Beach Bar. The small bar/restaurant is largely open-air and covered with seashells. It serves as the quarters for the campground and specializes in Ivan's Stress-Free Local Flavor drink - a cool, thirst-quenching stress-free punch.
There is a communal kitchen that is used by everyone for cooking, complete with pots & pans, utensils, plates, etc. This is a nice touch as you really get to meet the other campers and relax together. The campground also includes showers, toilets, the restaurant & bar and trails that lead one through the entire island of Jost Van Dyke - hiking that you will not want to miss for beauty and nature. Ivan is also an ecologist and is an excellent source of information on herbs, island remedies and historical island culture. He will guide you through the island's trails
with more information than you can digest.
Ivan's wife owns a local store, just over the hill, where you can purchase limited supplies and groceries. Christine's Bakery is right next door and she bakes goodies all day. Her breakfasts are old fashioned and delicious.
This holiday is highly recommended for those who love the outdoors and want to breathe true Caribbean scents as well as swim in crystal clear water anytime of the day or night. Bring what you would take anytime you camp. As with any campground in the tropics, don't forget the Off, your shades & hat and your sunscreen. Also add a flashlight or two and some good books,
your binoculars (for bird and fish watching), your hiking shoes, a lightweight jacket and a canteen.
There is a new ferry service from St. Thomas USVI to Jost Van Dyke. Ferries leave Friday, Saturday & Sunday only at 8am and 2pm. They return from Jost to St. Thomas at 9am and 3 pm. This makes traveling to Jost really easy. However, if you plan to travel at any other time follow this procedure. To reach White Bay simply take a plane into St. Thomas, USVI, and then take a ferry to West End, Tortola. At the ferry dock you will board a small ferry (WHEN) to Jost Van Dyke. This entire process takes several hours but if you know this in advance it can be an enjoyable experience. If you fly into Beef Island, Tortola (via San Juan) you will make a long (and expensive) taxi ride to West End and follow the same routine - take WHEN to Jost. We recommend St. Thomas. It's less expensive and much more fun.
