Mom and Dad’s 50th anniversary came in April, and on April 30, 18 family members came to occupy the wonderful Mongoose Apartments…for the second time.
Though Mom and Dad make an annual trek here from Chicago, the family – now with several additions – was here ten years ago, for the 40th anniversary.
We loved the Mongoose in 1996, and were captivated in 2006. Some comforts have been added – the bedrooms now have air-conditioning; there is TV for those seeking to maintain contact with the mainland.
Otherwise, nothing much has changed – the teal and salmon building and apartments remain well appointed, comfortable and hugely appealing. Plus, we have terrific hosts in Elroy and Sandra. There is no information they can’t provide; and few amenities they can’t either supply or direct us to.
A three-minute walk will take you to the beach in Cane Garden Bay, one of Tortola’s highest recommended. Sandra and Elroy offer beach chairs, floats – and shade trees! For your bearings, the sun rises behind you, and sets in front of you, so there is plenty of sun to be enjoyed.
Best of all, after all those years, Sandra and Elroy are part of the family: our anniversary dinner out with Mom and Dad served not 18, but 20!

Sandra and Elroy were kind, knowledgeable and helpful. They answered all our questions before we left and while we were here.
The aptartment was clean, and was furnished with everything we needed. The beach was a short walk away on a path through a coconut grove (lit up at night)! Also, the beach was uncrowded and there were kayaks and beach chairs for guests.
In addition, a small grocery was within walking distance as were several restaurants. There were no problems with bugs in the aptartment, either. We wore bugspray outside in the evening, and were not bitten.
We lacked nothing here and would love to stay here again. |

This was our first visit to Cane Garden Bay and Mongoose Apartments. My wife and I have visited Tortola previously and have seen many nice properties, but we would have to agree that staying at Mongoose Apartments has been the most memorable experience of our lives!
The property was ideally located within 100 yards of one of the finest bays/beaches in the BVIs. We were "taken away" daily on our tranquil walks along the entrance drive through lush tropical growth on our way to and from the beach. (We picked fresh mangoes and passionfruit daily for breakfast!)
Cane Garden Bay had a beautiful white sand beach with fabulous snorkeling just offshore along the reef that protects the Bay. Complimentary beach lounge chairs and ocean kayaks were all part of the deal here!
The aparments were just far enough away from any activity to provide total tranquility. Nearby(within easy walking distance), we found a fully stocked grocery store and some of the islands finest dining and entertainment spots.
The aparments were tastefully appointed in a truly Caribbean style. They were roomy, comfortable, and exceptionally clean. A fully equipped kitchen was part of the deal and really made us feel at home. If you were going to move here and build or buy a place...it would be just like this!
The truly remarkable thing about Mongoose Apartments that set it apart from any property that we have experienced was the proprietor Sandra Henley. She was a most wonderful host who really knows how to pay attention to detail and her guests needs.
She always had time to call a taxi or make arrangements for us. Nothing seemed too much of a bother.... ever! Her warm and personal touch and interaction with her guests was most refreshing in a world today were so many people seem cold or impartial.
My wife and I can't wait to go back! We highly recommend Mongoose Apartments. |

Mongoose Apartments was a tranquil, and clean accommodation with thoughtful touches. Visited: May 2004 |

In May 2004, we stayed with Sandra at Mongoose Apartments for three nights after a week's sailing charter.
We loved the proximity to the beach, grocery store and restaurants at Cane Garden Bay (about two minutes walk), but enjoyed the peacefulness of our own little rainforest off the beaten path. (Our cab driver had to ask for directions as you can't see this place from the road!)
The accommodation was simple, but clean, comfortable and tropical. Thoughtful touches abound, such as beach towels, insect repellant, a library of books and games, and not one but two coolers of different sizes for guests to use. The kitchen was well equipped and even included a blender.
This was not a fancy place, and those looking for luxury will be disappointed. But for those looking for a charming, quiet spot within easy walking distance to the beach and most other amenities (with free beach chairs and sea kayaks provided for guests to use) Mongoose Apartments is an excellent choice and an excellent value. Sandra could not have been more kind and helpful. I only wish we could have stayed longer! |

My wife and I (and four other couples) just completed a week-long stay at the Mongoose. The apartments were all well maintained and stocked. They were also very neat and clean. Although some may find the lodging to be a little more rustic and simple than what they are used to, everything was as described to us in advance and on their website.
I immediately fell in love with the natural surroundings and the tranquility of the Mongoose. This was accented by the many beautiful plants surrounding the apartments, the short stroll to the beach through a coconut groove, and needed isolation from the activities on the beach.
Our host, Sandra Henley, was always available when we needed to rent a car, get a taxi, or to make any other plans. Yet, she was never obtrusive in any way. She actually became a friend to us (not bad for just a one-week stay).
If you are looking for a shiny, land-like cruise ship environment - look somewhere else - Tortola nor the Mongoose is your answer. Would I recommend the Mongoose Apartments? Absolutely. We had a wonderful stay! |

We first came to Cane Garden Bay in 2001, and have come back every year. We hope to return every year for as long as we can. It's a wonderfully relaxing and quiet place to get away from the hectic, fast-paced busy world. The owners are friendly and helpful, and the climate is perfect if you're looking for a quiet relaxing get-away! |

After years of island hopping in the Caribbean, we found Tortola, Cane Garden Bay and Mongoose Apartments. This is our "secret place".
Mongoose Apartments fulfills all our needs-it is clean, comfortable, quiet and very well equipped. No detail has been overlooked by Sandra and Elroy Henley. We find all the comforts of home in a beautiful paradise setting.
This is a place where you can recharge, rekindle, refresh, relax and restore your faith in mankind. It is difficult to find anything wrong with Mongoose Apartments.
Although, I would love to keep this as my private sanctuary... I know you will find Mongoose Apartments pleasant and the roosters absolutely charming. |

We love the quiet setting of Mongoose Apartments, amid lush tropical trees and colorful flowers.
We find we have the best of both worlds as the best beach in BVI is only a three-minute walk away. Here, we can safely swim, kayak, sail and surf, as well as get meals and refreshments from several local bars and restaurants.
The apartments are clean and well equipped, and the staff is knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. We have been lucky enough to visit the Mongoose every winter for several years as do many of their patrons. |

We will be returning to the Mongoose in November for another three-week stay. We enjoy this quite place with easy access to the beach and a roomy, clean apartment.
Most of the loud action is at the other end of the beach, but is very accessible when you want it. Our favorite time is the early morning swim with the fish and the diving pelicans.
The highlight of staying at the Mongoose is the owners. Elroy and Sandra go all out to make the time spent here most enjoyable. |

We loved the location. It was a short walk through palm trees and other greenery to the beach. We also loved the privacy of our fully stocked apartment, and the solitude when we needed it.
The owners and staff are what keeps us going back to the same place for ten years now. |

My husband and I wanted to do the BVIs on a budget, so we decided that we would rent a place with a kitchen and explore the islands using Cane Garden Bay as a base. There were quite a few options for lodging at Cane Garden Bay and on all of Tortola, especially in August, but we decided on the Mongoose after correspodning with Sandra.
We made the right decision. The Mongoose was furnished with everything we needed for anything we wanted to do. Although the Mongoose wasn't located right on the beach, Sandra and Elroy lived across the street on the beach and allowed guests to use the kayaks and beach chairs that were stored on their property.
The Mongoose was located a little bit down the road from the "center" of town where you would most likely want to go for dinner and drinks. For us, this wasn't a negative aspect of the property, but very positive because it was very peaceful and quiet.
I would recommend the Mongoose to anyone -- especially the air conditioned units, which were very much worth the extra money. |

We first visited Cane Garden Bay five years ago, and have returned to Mongoose Apartments every year since.
We found the best bay on the island - and the best apartments. The apartments are spacious, clean, fully equipped and ideally positioned 200 yards, and a two-minute walk to the beach.
We are always made so welcome by Sandra and Ellie, who create a "home away from home" atmosphere, and each year, we cannot wait to return. |

Mongoose Apartments is a lovely place to stay and the hosts are very friendly and accommodating. Nestled in lush tropical vegetation you are just a short walk from the beautiful beach of Cane Garden Bay and its many dining and recreational activities.
Tortola is truly a "diamond in the rough" and once you've been there you won't dream of going anywhere else. Mongoose's central location on the north shore, where all of the gorgeous beaches are, makes Mongoose an ideal home base. Be sure to rent a jeep.
The hosts provide their guests with beach towels, beach chairs, lounge chairs, kayaks and floats and also offer information on exploring the British Virgin Islands. If peace, quite and relaxation is what you are looking for, this is the place! |

We loved it here. It was quiet and far enough away from the beach bar music at night, yet only 200 steps to the beach and the restaurants and bars of Cane Garden Bay. We were provided with chairs, lounges and kayaks at the beach. The kitchens were fully equipped and were also given BBQs, beach coolers, beach towels, etc. The hosts were top-notch. We wouldn't stay anywhere else on Tortola.
