Captain's House, Tortola, BVI traveler review

Fantastic Week In Tortola Visited: October 2008
Posted by craignhess
We had an absolutely wonderful week at the Captain's House. The location and views are perfect. The house has everything you need. I would recommend this house to anyone who wants a private setting with breath taking views, just minutes from two great beaches (Long Bay and Smuggler's Cove).

A Tortola, BVI travel review

I don't recommend Dell's Car Rental.
Posted by sterlingiv
They do not maintain their vehicles. The one I rented broke down shortly after renting it. They gave me a hard time returning it, and charged my card for the rental anyway.

Also, their staff was rude and abusive to me. They even berated my wife with comments. I highly recommend staying as far away from them as possible.

We stayed at Oleander, the smallest of the cottages and loved it! It's in a great location, has wonderful views and complete privacy!

I highly recommend it.

Sunny Side Up Villa, Tortola is the best. Visited: August 2008

What a fabulous villa! It has beautiful furnishings, an awesome view, privacy, and everything was immaculate!

The kitchen and grill afforded us an opportunity to cook fun and delicious meals with local foods. We were met at the airport by JC, the manager of several of these villas. That was the best in customer service to help us get going!

Casa De Miel Villa s a wonderful experience. Visited: August 2008

The interior is very nicely furnished, and the view of Cane Garden Bay, Jose Van Dyke and St. Thomas on a clear day can't be beat.

The owner, Ron Cline, and his employees go over and above what we expected to make us feel at home. The second night, they prepared a dinner for us that was the best dinner we had while on Tortola.

Sugar Mill Hotel, Tortola, BVI traveler review

It's just as their tag line reads. Visited: April 2008

My wife and I hosted our wedding reception at The Sugar Mill in 2005, so it will always be a special place for us. We recently stayed here again with two other couples after a bareboat charter. My wife and I, and our guests, could not have been happier.

Everything about the Sugar Mill Hotel is special, and nothing will disappoint. The setting, on Apple Bay on Tortola's northwest shore, is idyllic and one of the most quiet areas on the island. The view across to Jost Van Dyke is fantastic, and Apple Bay boasts one of the best surf breaks in the BVI, adding great sound to the scenery.

The hotel and Mill house blend perfectly into the hillside, and the rooms (the pool rooms are spectacular) are well-appointed without being stuffy.

The staff is attentive and very accommodating. It was impressive to see that several of the staff remembered us from our wedding. Such attention is a tribute to Liz Humphrey, the hotel administrator, who also took the time to personally welcome us back.

If you are looking for a lot of activity, this is not the place. If you want to unplug and relax, The Sugar Mill can’t be beat.

We already look forward to our next stay at The Sugar Mill.

Sugar Mill Hotel, Tortola, BVI traveler review

We had a wonderful stay at the Sugar Mill Hotel. Visited: June 2008
Posted by cmurrell
My husband and I stayed at the Sugar Mill Hotel for three nights in June. We stayed in the upper level Plantation Suite.

The staff was helpful and friendly. The grounds were beautiful, and there was a nice beach across the street. I thought the landscaping was lovely - with lots of pretty flowers and lush trees.

Our room was very accommodating and clean. It was a large open room with a separate area that included a couch and chairs, and a large bed on the back wall.

The bathroom was nice and big, with a large shower and two sinks. It also had a little kitchen area with microwave, refrigerator and coffee maker. My favorite thing was the balcony with a hammock and a beautiful view of Jost Van Dyke and Apple Bay.

The dinners at the restaurant were nothing short of fantastic. From the delicious appetizers all the way through the wonderful entrees and finally the fresh desserts, it was some of the best food I've ever tasted.

We have been to many different places in the Caribbean, and the Sugar Mill was by far our favorite. We will be returning as soon as possible!

Maria's by the Sea Hotel, Tortola, BVI traveler review

Maria's has friendly staff and is a quiet accommodation. Visited: September 2007
Posted by sugarcityman
I stayed at Maria's By The Sea Hotel September 2007, when I visited the island to witness the Miss Caribbean World Pageant. I found the staff at the front desk to be extremly helpful and friendly, and I was even given a room I did not pay for.

I can and would recommend anyone going to Tortola to stay at Maria's, because it is easy to get around from the hotel, and the staff is always willing to give information and to answer questions.

I met the owner. She was a very nice person. Also, I met two of the daughters who work at the hotel, and they were really nice ladies.

I would say stay at Maria's, but make your own judgement, because everyone sees things differently.

Keep up the good work and continue to make your guests happy and comfortable.

Wow, what a great place to stay on vacation! Guava Road was so comfortable, and so close to great beaches and restaurants. Sebastian's is a must!

My fiance and I absolutely loved the accommodations, and Pat and Alphonso really made us feel at home.

Alphonso and Pat are the perfect hosts, and give every effort to making your stay enjoyable and easy! You'll be as sorry to leave them behind as you are the BVI.

The accommodations are comfortable and large - but cozy. Every small touch or extra has been thought of, especially tons of beach towels - which is so useful with the beautiful beaches nearby.

Be sure to see Long Bay's beach!

Magic Castle, Tortola, BVI traveler review

We loved this place. Visited: April 2008

This was our third stay at the Magic Castle Villa at Little Bay. We loved this place, and dream about it in the "off" season.

It is a truly spiritual place: gorgeous views, great amenities, privacy, and total relaxation. It is off the beaten path, which makes it even more attractive.

Eva is a most gracious host, and we are so thankful to have found her and her beautiful home. If you're looking for a special spot - this place is it!

Heritage Inn, Tortola, BVI traveler review

This was just what we wanted. Visited: April 2008

We have visited Tortola for eight years now, and often stay at a hotel before we check into our rental villa. We have stayed at numerous places around the island, and this year we stayed at Heritage Inn.

What a treat. It was a great place. Chris and her staff were friendly and attentive, yet not intrusive. Our room was clean, neat, and comfortable. Also, the view was one of the best in the islands.

If you are looking for a day or two, or a week or two - you won't be disappointed here. Enjoy this beautiful spot!

Sugar Mill Hotel, Tortola, BVI traveler review

We enjoyed the Sugar Mill Restaurant and Inn. Visited: May 2008
Posted by dbahn
My wife and I spent two days at the Sugar Mill preceding a Bareboat charter. We loved it - both the restaurant and the inn.

We reserved the cottage along with another couple who had to cancel their trip at the last minute. So, we ended up with a huge suite-like arrangement to ourselves, which was extra nice.

We dined at the hotel both nights, and thoroughly enjoyed both meals. I doubt that there is a better restaurant on Tortola. And, in speaking with others on the sailing part of our trip, that seems to be the consensus of opinion among residents and tourists.

We wouldn't hesitate for a second to go back - and probably will.

Tamarind Club Hotel, The, Tortola, BVI traveler review

This is a gem in the jungle. Visited: April 2008
Posted by drewdungan
If you prefer laid-back surroundings, great service, and feeling like you are part of the family, the Tamarind Club in Josiah's Bay is the place.

My wife and I have stayed at the Tamarind Club four times, and it gets better every time. It is the perfect place to stay for your first and last night if you are chartering in the BVI. It is also great for those who want a very private, yet casual place to escape for an extended period.

Although it is not on the water, the level of service (and bartending) more than makes up for it.

Finally, if you like to go where the locals go when they have the time off, Tamarind is the place. Their Sunday brunch is the best on Tortola, and you can gorge yourself in your bikini or surf trunks without feeling out-of-place.

Sea View Hotel, Tortola, BVI traveler review

All we heard was "cock a doodle doo!". Visited: December 2007
Posted by gasser
The Sea View was a very basic, but inexpensive hotel just off downtown Road Town. Its rooms were clean but noisy. A vigorous rooster crowed off and on all night long, and traffic noise from the main island road roared by all night long just beneath the window.

It was a functional - but not great - room.

What a motto! The Heritage Inn delivers on that statement - the views are wonderful.

It is a quaint hotel with a warm heart - just like Chris and her great staff (thanks, Spicey, for the recipe!). The staff makes your stay special.

The rooms are clean and comfortable, and they serve great food at the Bananakeet Cafe. You can't go wrong here.

If we ever get back to BVI, there's no question it's the Heritage Inn.

Three years ago, this was a wonderful place to stay. My last experience was much worse.

The staff was indifferent -and even rude. The room was mosquito infested. The food at the restaurant was good, assuming that you can ever find someone to take your order!

We had an absolutely brillant time at the Sugar Mill Hotel. We had a lovely room, the staff was great, and the food was to die for.

Both my husband and I agreed that it was the best vacation we had in our 15 years of marital bliss.

We are definitely coming back next year!

Long Bay Beach Resort, Tortola, BVI traveler review

It was very disappointing! Visited: April 2008
Posted by sandj
My husband and I chose Long Bay because we wanted a place to get pampered. We couldn't have been more let down.

I needed an extra towel, and we asked the lady who cleaned our room. She told my husband she would leave one, but she never did. Then, we left a friendly reminder note. Still, no extra towel. My husband had to go to the manager to complain. Finally, we got an extra towel.

The food was over-priced and not very tasty. The service was slow, and it felt like pulling teeth to get anything.

As for the "deluxe" oceanfront rooms: We spent a fortune to be on the beach. Except, we couldn't see the beach that well from our room because there were too many shrubs in the way.

The beach was pretty, but there were too many rocks to swim. You could really get hurt, so we never stayed here for swimming. We always went to Smuggler's Cove.

As for the rooms - the beds were so hard we couldn't really sleep. The rooms also seemed really in need of refurbishing. They were dinghy.

The water was turned off a few times, and the power went off on numerous occasions! There was lots of construction going on, too.

I really wish we had picked a different spot, but if I can help someone not make the same mistake - I'll be happy. If you want to be spoiled and pampered, Long Bay Beach Resort is not the place for you!
