Sugar Mill Hotel, Tortola, BVI traveler review

It was a marvelous place. Visited: April 2008
Posted by gfreeman90
We had an absolutely brillant time at the Sugar Mill Hotel. We had a lovely room, the staff was great, and the food was to die for.

Both my husband and I agreed that it was the best vacation we had in our 15 years of marital bliss.

We are definitely coming back next year!

Long Bay Beach Resort, Tortola, BVI traveler review

It was very disappointing! Visited: April 2008
Posted by sandj
My husband and I chose Long Bay because we wanted a place to get pampered. We couldn't have been more let down.

I needed an extra towel, and we asked the lady who cleaned our room. She told my husband she would leave one, but she never did. Then, we left a friendly reminder note. Still, no extra towel. My husband had to go to the manager to complain. Finally, we got an extra towel.

The food was over-priced and not very tasty. The service was slow, and it felt like pulling teeth to get anything.

As for the "deluxe" oceanfront rooms: We spent a fortune to be on the beach. Except, we couldn't see the beach that well from our room because there were too many shrubs in the way.

The beach was pretty, but there were too many rocks to swim. You could really get hurt, so we never stayed here for swimming. We always went to Smuggler's Cove.

As for the rooms - the beds were so hard we couldn't really sleep. The rooms also seemed really in need of refurbishing. They were dinghy.

The water was turned off a few times, and the power went off on numerous occasions! There was lots of construction going on, too.

I really wish we had picked a different spot, but if I can help someone not make the same mistake - I'll be happy. If you want to be spoiled and pampered, Long Bay Beach Resort is not the place for you!

Heritage Inn, Tortola, BVI traveler review

The people, view and food were all fanstastic. Visited: April 2008

We stayed at Heritage Inn for two nights in early April after chartering a catamaran for a week. This was our sixth charter, and we now have a new tradition -- Heritage Inn for two-three nights after the charter!

Chris and everyone at Heritage Inn were great. They made us feel like we were part of the family. The view was outstanding, and the food at Bannakeet was superb!

My kids loved it (9,7,5). We spent the day at the beach, and the kids enjoyed the pool while we enjoyed happy hour. We ate dinner both nights at the Bannakeet - delicious. We hated to leave.

Our room was huge, and perfect for our family. Everything was clean. Again, the view can't be beat! I recommend the Heritage Inn for couples, families - anyone. Just don't take my room when I want to go back!

Sugar Mill Hotel, Tortola, BVI traveler review

This was a wonderful gem. Visited: March 2008

We were delighted with our short holiday at the Sugar Mill Hotel. We were greeted by wonderful and friendly staff. We had just come off a seven-day bareboat cruise with weather that was less than perfect.

We were so pleased by the lovely adjoining rooms with a perfect patio and landscaping that framed a post card view.

The dinner menu for that evening was available for review in the morning - a clever devise to get you geared up for a great meal. It was! Fabulous and creative entrees with fresh local ingredients, were beautifully prepared and served with a smile.

Our group ate at the Sugar Mill every night of our three-night stay by popular demand. The menu changed daily, and the variety of choices was wonderful. On the busiest night with a full dining room, our meal was served promptly, and was perfectly prepared.

This is a wonderful gem, and we will return.

Everyone is on "island time" here. Visited: October 2007

The staff is wonderful. Speed is a bit slow, but predictably so. Hence, island time.

Food is average, but not bad. They have very friendly staff. Do not be in a hurry, or you will be disapointed. I suspect that is the speed throughout the islands.

I do recommend!

Fort Recovery Beachfront Villa & Suites Hotel, Tortola, BVI traveler review

This was a great family "get away from it all" place. Visited: April 2008
Posted by facsman
We are a family of four, with two teens 15 and 17. Our stay at the Fort Recovery Villas was an outstanding family vacation.

We booked a two-bedroom lower level villa. The beach was approximately 70 steps from the patio door, and looked out across the Sir Francis Drake Channel to St. John.

The staff was friendly and attentive. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the dining arrangements were elegant.

Also, the snorkel trip to Norman Island on the Fort Recovery boat was a highlight and not to be missed.

We found the atmosphere at Fort Recovery highly restful and authentic. It is a small operation compared to some larger chain resorts. While not offering all the amenities a larger operation could, the sense of location and getting way from it all was superb. It was also located within easy access to West End and Nanny Cay.

A vehicle is recommended for getting around.

Sugar Mill Hotel, Tortola, BVI traveler review

This was a truly fantastic place. Visited: March 2008
Posted by pmills
We recently returned from our trip to the Sugar Mill Hotel, and it was truly a fantastic vacation. Everything was lovely from beginning to end.

When we arrived, we were greeted by a lovely lady at the front desk whom informed us we had been given a complimentary upgrade into the Plantation House Suite.

What a fantastic room! It had such a great view, and was absolutely spotless - not to mention the hammock on the balcony.

The property was beautiful and quiet. The staff went out of their way to be helpful, and always with a smile on their faces. No request was too great.

Also, dinner was amazing, with a menu that changed nightly. We ate at the Sugar Mill every night of our stay and were never disappointed.

From the housekeeping staff to the management, everyone ensured that our stay at the Sugar Mill was one to remember. We will tell our friends, and we will certainly be back next year!

We just returned from a great stay at the Sugar Mill Hotel in Tortola. We were on their Adventure Package, and all I can say is -wow!

We had a beautiful room (called the Cottage). We also enjoyed amazing food. The chef created a specific menu nightly to suit my gluten free diet.

The features of the package were great. We enjoyed diving, daysailing, flight to another island, castaway beach picnic and an amazing room to return to.

The room also had an outside shower. It was really nice bathing under the stars while listening to the crickets and tree frogs in the background. It was so cool.

Also, the staff was very friendly and efficient. We can't wait to go back next year.

It was excellent all around. Visited: March 2008

My husband and our three children (ages 9, 13 and 18) stayed at this hotel in March for 12 days.

We had a lovely stay from start to finish. Pamelah and Matt (hotel office managers) were more than helpful and attentive, very genuine people, friendly and informative.

Our room was great. We stayed in a three-bedroom suite which had a view to die for! We were on the ground level (as opposed to the penthouses they had), and we loved that we were just inches from diving into the water every day which was relaxing!

The beach was small, and perfect. Families with young kids will love this because we didn't notice any rough surf or anything hazardous at the property at all. We were very happy to be able to relax from our deck and watch our youngest daughter playing with the cute puppy "Becky" who seemed to provide hours of entertainment to the kids staying at the hotel.

Service at the restaurant was friendly and generally helpful. It was a little slow, but we were accustomed to the "island time" pace of things from having stayed on Virgin Gorda and Anegada in the past.

Overall, we loved this place and would return in a minute!

Lambert Beach Resort, Tortola, BVI traveler review

the manager needs a lesson in manners. Visited: March 2008
Posted by jmjorg
After a week on a Moorings boat, we stayed two nights at this resort. What a complete disaster!

Our first room had so much mildew in the bathroom, my wife and kids took a shower outside in the shower to rinse off the sand from the beach. They moved us to another room that was sanitary, except it had no air conditioning or hot water. I had the front desk person get the General Manager, Mr. Leslie, on the phone. His response was "Why don't you just take your family and leave?".

What should we expect for $400 per night? There were so many issues at this hotel that if it were in the states, the health department, building department and Fire Marshall would close this hotel in a second.

Sugar Mill Hotel, Tortola, BVI traveler review

It's overrated, and not the best on the island, but an okay stay overall. Visited: March 2008
Posted by alyadup59
We stayed at Sugar Mill for eight days in mid-March. Bear in mind we've stayed all over Tortola in the past, and know what to expect basically.

Our room wasn't clean, the sheets were grimy, and there were dirty surfaces. It was a bit dated, and just not what we felt was "upscale".

The staff was friendly, but not very attentive.

Also, the food was once outstanding, but was horrible all three nights we ate during our stay.

The property was very close to road, so the road noise at night was noticeable.

Complaints were never addressed with any kind of concern until we were paying and checking out.

Finally, the vView wasn't worth the money. There are much nicer places on the island with better locations.

Overall, we felt this wasn't the perfect experience we had dreamt about after reading rave reviews. Our experience was mediocre at best, and sadly, we won't return here.

Sugar Mill Hotel, Tortola, BVI traveler review

This is a special place for unique people. Visited: November 2007
Posted by phatfrredi
The quiet gem of the Suger Mill Hotel sits as far from the airport and Tortola's main urban center, Road Town, as it is possible to get and still be on the same island. You can hear and taste the peace and quiet.

But the Sugar Mill is no rustic retreat. Each room is fully equipped, with a microwave and fridge...more than enough to ensure your drink is always chilled and a fresh sandwich can be whipped up in the event of a sudden snack emergency.

Each room is comfortably furnished, and all are kept spotless by a cheerful friendly and helpful team of maids. The hotel's decor is extremely comfortable, spotless, and well maintained. Also, for a good nights sleep, each room is equipped wit a quiet and very efficient air conditioner, an absolutely essential piece of kit on an island where the humidity can slay the strongest individual.

With its beautiful swimming pool, sun loungers and quiet location, the Sugar Mill is the ideal spot for those seeking to re-charge their batteries and spend quality time with their partners.

The kitchens at the hotel have been described by many as the very finest in the Caribbean. From the generous portions of breakfast, to the casual snacks, often of that most evocative variety, a judicious combination of local delicacies combined with the comfort food of that most nostalgic of generations, the baby boomers, the overall effect is of a foodies paradise.

In the evening, the dining room provides a selection of appetizers and entrees that are first rate and would put even a high end New York restaurant to shame. Service is swift, cheerful and unobtrusive, by a staff that quickly learns the individual quirks and personal preferences of their guests.

This is a beautiful hotel, with clean, modern, well equipped accommodations, set on an island of unsurpassed natural beauty. It has a five-star kitchen and chefs who make the best possible of both local produce and the highest quality imports. It

However, what really sets the Sugar Mill apart is staff that is friendly, courteous, and always willing to go the extra mile to make sure you are having a good time.

Stay here before sailing only. Visited: November 1999

The Mariner is a sailing hotel. It is a nice convenient location the night before you go sailing for a week - or when you return. It is not for a full vacation stay. You will be disappointed if you do.

Try the Long Bay Resort for the best beach and location.

It was fantastic! Visited: January 2008

I just returned from Casa Luna with my husband for our honeymoon. Casa Luna far exceeded all of our expectations.

The views were beautiful, and the beach was just a quick drive. Smuggler's Cove was the best beach on the island.

The owner was on the property, and was great us. She is a wonderful lady!

I cannot say enough good things about this house!

With its beautiful views, this villa really relaxes you and gives you the spirit of Tortola.

Unfortunately, I would have been better off at a more exciting resort. But, tastes differ, so others may prefer it here.

We had a wonderful time in Tortola, and were pleasantly surprised with Seven Peaks. We knew how nice it looked online, but had no idea how much more beautiful it would be in person.

It was a perfect vacation spot - we just didn't want to leave! It truly was a fantastic experience, and I am certain we will be booking Seven Peaks again for any future travel to Tortola.

The staff at this hotel is all in the family. I have spent many vacations here, and have gotten to know them.

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time with the Rhymer family. However, March is wonderful also as by then I am tired of winter in Indiana.

See you soon with friends and wives!

Casa Luna, Tortola, BVI traveler review

Some aspects of Casa Luna could be a problem for potential guests. Visited: November 2007
Posted by madmike
If this is your first experience renting a villa, your opinion may differ from mine. So, I'll offer up facts that can't be refuted.

First and foremost, lots of trees obstruct sunlight, including the pool with exception to early morning hours. Expect shade the rest of the day. If you enjoy sunbathing, the beach would be your best bet.

Second, the road from the main road to the villa getting is nothing more than unpaved, rocky, and very rough path.

Third, the villa invites mosquitos when open to the elements. Deet is required constantly here.

Finally, dull and dark best describes the ambience, except over the kitchen sink. Working at the island can be challenging. I hope this helps.

Fort Recovery Beachfront Villa & Suites Hotel, Tortola, BVI traveler review

This place is great for families. Visited: August 2007
Posted by annalovessun
I stayed here in August 2007 with my two kids, husband, sister and her three kids.

This was one of the best family vacations we have ever had. The hotel was prompt in helping us with anything we needed, and they were very warm.

The food was very good and diverse. We never got bored of the menus. We stayed in one three-bedroom, and one one-bedroom ground floor villas. They were very large and beautiful, and extraordinarily clean.

The snorkeling trip with this hotel was great fun, and perfect for what we came for: snorkeling and sightseeing.

Their beach was pleasant, with no crowds or outside public all over. At some points, it was just our family and perhaps two other couples sharing the beach, which was a good size. We swam, and did a little snorkeling off the shore, which was quite good.

We will return to Fort Recovery in the future. It was worth every penny, and we had a memorable time.
