Located in George Town this restaurant does the majority of its business at lunchtime and after nearby businesses have closed. Locals enjoy cocktails here after work, making late afternoon an great time to get an insight into the inner life of Grand Cayman. The restaurant and bar are decorated like a tavern, with exposed brick and dark mahogany paneling. Lunches here are simple and tasty, focusing on salads, sandwiches, light platters, and soups. Dinners are more elaborate and can be accompanied by glasses of any of eight house wines, which are priced from CI$5 to CI$7 (US$6.25-US$8.75) a glass. If you just want bar snacks and tapas, consider ordering the jerk-chicken quesadilla, the flash-fried calamari with jerk-seasoned tartar sauce, or an antipasto platter. Main courses at dinner might include well-prepared versions of partially seared tuna tataki; baked portobello mushrooms with Gorgonzola cheese; roasted and olive-crusted rack of lamb; and braised salmon with seaweed salad. The result is a well-managed pocket of southern European service and cuisine that's tucked into a modern shopping center. It's all very tongue-in-cheek, but despite a whiff of corniness, the food is well prepared and flavorful, and the place is genuinely popular, especially with families, who are drawn to its pizzas and pastas. Expect a menu with six kinds of pizza; a long list of pastas and risottos, including an excellent version of spaghetti with shrimp and lobster in a Parmesan cream and pesto sauce and medallion of lobster tail in a creamy cognac sauce. On Thursday nights from 9 to 10pm, you can take a free salsa lesson and enjoy the open dance floor. On Sunday check out the Big Kahuna comedy show. Situated in Breakers, just a couple of minutes east of Turtle Nest Inn, this oceanfront landmark is open for lunch and dinner, and boasts a very professional serving staff, and a first-class wine selection. The Lighthouse offers a creative menu of local seafood and Italian dishes, a screened patio, a new, expansive, and very pleasant bar area, and an air conditioned Port Room in which you can enjoy a good Cuban cigar. True to its name, it offers lobster prepared in many different ways: Cayman style, bisque, and salad. Braised jerk chicken, turtle steak, and stuffed Chilean salmon are on the menu. The place is also known for its prime beef steaks. For lunch, you might like the English fish and chips or perhaps lobster quesadillas or a pasta. Set in a simple concrete building near the northern end of West Bay Road, this is one of a few genuinely appealing and relatively affordable Italian restaurants on Grand Cayman. There's no view of the sea, but you'll get the feeling that you're at the seashore, thanks to a decor featuring very pristine ceramic tiles, a color scheme of blue and white, and a mural of cavorting mermaids. Tables on the large outdoor terrace are centered on a human-size statue of the Neptune, Greek god of the sea. Menu items include a wide array of all the usual pastas, plus some nonstandard choices such as Spaghetti alla Courtney, made with eggplant, fresh tomatoes, garlic, and mozzarella cheese; and Spaghetti Bella Pesaro, made with grilled zucchini and fresh clams. The seafood here is especially tempting, including such dishes as shrimp with garlic butter, balsamic vinegar, and fresh herbs; mixed seafood curry; and grilled red snapper served with lobster, shrimp, and tomato-flavored cream sauce. The mahi mahi and lobster tail were very good, the prices were reasonable ( a big plus on this very expensive island), the servers were friendly, and the sunset was beautiful. Just the ticket! At Portofino, in Gun Bay (just past East End, about 13 miles east of Turtle Nest Inn), manager Ramesh and his capable staff assure you of excellent Italian and local dishes, and seafood specialties using the fresh catch of village fishermen. With advance notice, they'll even prepare an authentic Indian meal. The setting is on the water and secluded, and the service informal, but efficient. Solana is beachfront, on the southern end of the unbelievably beautiful Seven Mile Beach. One enters through the very nice Marriott Resort, past a beautifully landscaped atrium, with pools filled with exotic turtles,and out to the stunning view of the Caribbean just feet away.The resort faces west, so beautiful sunsets unfold during the dinner hours. We dined there twice,even though it was a thirty minute drive from where we stayed. Wednesday night we thoroughly enjoyed the lobster tail and all you can eat shrimp special; the lobster tail was at least seven ounces of succulent, sweet ambrosia; the shrimp were also delicious. We were first presented with a complimentary starter of seared tuna over plaintain-delicious! Friday night was a Carribean and more buffet including sushi, cold crab claws and shrimp, delicious cold salads, endless steamed crab legs, jerk chicken and pork, truly delicious desserts, and more. As if that weren't enough, we were also entertained by a steel drum musician,and a very entertaining fire eating and limbo dancing show, during which several diners joined in. We all loved this restaurant, and the chef and his team have won several awards on the island and in the region. Definitely worth going to,especially at sunset! (close)
