We experienced discrimination and disaster. Visited: June 2008
Posted by bobye
We stayed at Breezes Curacao. They took in bus loads of locals who seemed to have gotten the best rooms. Those guests told me how discounted their stay was. We paid twice as much, and we stayed in a room with no beach view.

We asked to be upgraded, but they said they had no rooms. However, the locals continued to come through late Friday getting the best beachfront rooms. Our complaints did nothing.

When we got in line to be served, the locals were always waited on first. I stood in line for 15 minutes, and I was the only one who was not a local, and I was not waited on at all. Finally, I asked to be waited on, and I was told that I had to get behind the ones who just walked up. I left in tears - and was never waited on. I went to the manager. He apologized, but it continued to happen until they left on Sunday.

The package indicated that there was six days of scuba diving included. On the second day of scuba, they went to the exact same place, and we saw the exact same things. When we questioned them about it, they said the six days included the same dive every day. No divers want to dive the same exact place six days in a row. We asked if we could go to another place, and they said no.

Diving was available with the Marriot Hotel, and another dive shop was down the street. So we wasted our money on non-diving at Breezes because we forfeited the other four dives that we paid for with the package.

The food was good. However, we never got utensils, water or drinks in the main restaurant because they were too busy waiting on all the locals and ignoring everyone else.

It's good if you dive or snorkel, but the resort is mediocre. Visited: October 2006
Posted by scoobagrl
There were good and bad things I experienced during my stay here. First the good:

The snorkeling in the enclosed bay. You can just wade right out into the ocean, and see incredible colorful fish out by the man-made reef. Two giant rays of some kind swam right under me! Also, others have noted the need for water shoes. That is true, the beach is not fine sand, and can be ouchy on bare feet.

The pools were fun. Maybe I'm easy to please, but this was my first tropical resort, so I got a kick out of all the channels and fountains; right off the ocean.

I liked the free shore dives. It was cool, since there was an onsite dive shop, and if you swim 50 feet or so offshore, you can drop down and be on the reef. Besides uncounted beautiful clownfish, etc., I saw eels, barracuda, and a dolphin. Take your fish ID chart and your underwater camera.

The rooms were okay - except for my bathroom. There was mold on the shower curtain. I personally didn't care that much, since I mostly used the tub to rinse off my scuba gear. I was in the water 85% of the time, so showering was quick. Others would mind, though.

I thought the buffet food was okay. It was repetitive, but there was a variety. I always found something to eat; and certainly no one I heard of got sick. Also, the Japanese restaurant was quite good.

The bad things I encountered were as follows:

There was a sewage smell in some areas around outside of some buildings. However, I didn’t notice any inside.

Also, security was a little less than alert--there was an obviously drunk guy in the pool one evening harassing an obviously drunk woman to the point I thought I was going to have to leave or watch public NC-17 action.

Someone had to complain to get a staff member over to talk to the guy; and then he only wandered off and came back. I think part of the problem is the all-inclusive, unlimited free booze. This was by the swim-up bar, right in the middle of the main pool.

The dive shop folk were friendly, but not the most together. It was not good for professionals who could hurt someone by being sloppy at their jobs. I didn't see or hear of any incidents, but a fellow diver said that a piece of their rented equipment didn't work. Luckily, I guess he noticed before diving.

It's not an American hotel. Don't expect six big fluffy towels changed every day whether you used them or not. The staff mostly don't get tipped because it's all-inclusive (and I'm sure are paid badly), so they are definitely on island time; and it’s a European island.

I haven't stayed anywhere else on Curacao, so I can't compare Breezes to another Curacao resort. It's basic, needs some cleaning and policing, but I was there to dive. My room was someplace to sleep, and it was fine for that.

It was a nightmare for us at Breezes Curacao. Visited: October 2006
Posted by ruthann
My husband and I recently traveled to Curacao and spent a week at the Breezes Resort. We went to attend a wedding with a large group (of 26 guests) in which I was a bridesmaid. We were extremely disappointed with our experience.

We found the accommodations and conditions to be unsanitary here. Rats were visible around the resort – including food, bar and beach areas. Several areas of the resort smelled of poor drainage and sewage.

We also witnessed guests urinating in the pools from the deck and security refused to stop them. There was extensive mold in our room. We stayed in the Royal wing which was being painted to cover up the obvious signs and smells of mold and mildew in the entire building.

In addition, our bathroom was a constant issue. Water did not drain properly in either the sink or the tub. This resulted in standing water on the sink top and floor attracting mosquitoes and other insects.

There was no hot water for showers at anytime during the day. The maid service was obnoxious to us. They were extremely aggressive in getting into our room to clean. One day, a maid decided to clean around me while I was napping. I attempted to tell the maid that I was not interested in a room clean, but she would not take “no” for an answer. She proceeded to turn on all of the lights and clean around me for 30 minutes.

As for the security here: One evening several guests stood at the edge of the pools to urinate in plain view of other guests. Calls for security went unheeded.

Guest services were freely handing out room keys without proper identification. I was able to obtain a spare room key on two separate occasions by just giving them my room number. They never asked for ID or my name.

We were appalled at competing with the local birds for bread and other items in Jimmy’s Buffet. The bread area should be covered to keep out the wild life.

Rats were also clearly visible around the resort. I saw several rats roaming the bar area and beaches. The wait staff seemed indifferent to the English-speaking guests at all times, opting to serve the local and Dutch guests foremost.

The pre-wedding salon time was a disaster. The hairdresser seemed to have no obvious credentials or skills as a stylist. She was unable to manage the appointments and understand exactly what the bridal party wanted.

The wedding planner and manager seemed to have no experience at managing a wedding. The wedding manager had no plan to execute dinner seating, announcements, cake cutting, etc.

This SuperClubs Breezes needs a lot of work. Visited: November 2005
Posted by linda9014
We stayed Nov. 13th – 20th, 2005. Apparently this was the “rainy season” . Five out of seven days we had heavy rains - so much so that our room flooded.

The room we stayed in was horrible. It was old and extremely musty. I would say the building (Plover building) was beyond renovating – it should be bulldozed! The bed was rock hard, there was no vanity or no 110 plug in the bathroom. Also, there were ants all over the balcony and we were on the second floor! It was comparable to staying in a cheap motel – seriously.

The food was okay, nothing spectacular. Get to Jimmy's Buffet early, as they also hold the evening entertainment in the buffet and seats are difficult to get. The beach grill had great grilled chicken and fish, probably our best meal.

Weekends were very hectic. Apparently, they sell day passes to the locals. They had full run of the resort and seemed to get preferential treatment.

Snorkeling and diving were definitely the highlight on the island. The water was incredibly warm – a bit rocky, but not too bad.

The staff was hit and miss for us. Some were exceptional and others were just plain miserable – particularly the reception staff.

I rated this resort a 2 ½ star – that’s all you’ll get out of this place.

It was fine, but not luxurious. Visited: September 2005
Posted by aubergeg
I stayed here with two friends and their two-year-old daughter in 2005. We were mostly interested in the diving, which was very convenient. The dive shop right at the club was convenient and friendly (if somewhat disorganized).

Also, they can hook you up with most boat excursions you'd want, plus you get free shore dives. And the snorkeling in the enclosed bay was great!

Note: Don't expect expert divemasters. They can be slipshod; some people almost got left behind on a drift dive. Also, one of my rented regulators failed on me. Luckily, the spare worked.

The kiddy loved the waterfront pools, and the adults did, too.
The rooms were fine. However, they were not cleaned up to very high standards - especially the bathrooms, which had mold growing on the curtains. But the AC worked, and the view from the balcony was great.

The all-inclusive food was okay, nothing to complain or write home about. The Japanese restaurant was good and fun.

One big problem--there was a strong smell of sewage coming from somewhere on the grounds. You got a bad whiff of it on certain walkways. They may have fixed that by now, though.

It's not the Hyatt, but it was kid-friendly and we enjoyed it. The island is your basic tropical paradise, after all.

It was not a Ritz Carlton - but not bad (with one exception). Visited: August 2005
Posted by staywme
I stayed at the Breezes August 1-8, 2005 with my 25-year-old son.
Visiting the pool bar with unbelievablely courteous staff (and some generous portions) was usually our start to the afternoon.

We managed twice to get into the Japanese restaurant (needless to say, we wouldn't have attempted to get back if it was bad). We managed only one reservation in the Italian restaurant.

As far as the food in the main hall went - the quality was in relation to our level of expectations. If you want to have lobster and steak every night and pay $500.00, the Ritz or some other fancy resort would be better for you. If you're a $39.99 kind of person and feel at home in a Motel 6, this is your Taj Mahal.

For all of us in between, I always feel that if I don't have to do the cooking and if I don't have to do the dishes, the food is usually pretty good. And that's how I thought of it at the main dining area as well. It was just fine, unless you have gourmet expectations.

Diving was one of our biggest reasons to go on vacation. The resort did not disappoint us. Their own dives were a 'breeze' away, and if you wanted more adventures (at additional costs) that was all available right from their dock. I found the people at the Dive Shop to be extraordinarily friendly and hospitable.

One exception: The front office manager of the resort intervened in a small dispute I had regarding a missed wake-up call, which caused me to lose a deposit on a diving trip. I had to go back to the lobby to meet with her or one of her associates about five times. Each time, this took an abundance of my 'vacation' time.

While the resort had agreed to refund me my deposit (paid to a third party), the tactic of stalling set in. In the end, after my fifth visit, I had an outburst right there in the lobby and told the young lady what I thought of her hospitality.

The stalling included having to get an "okay" from her general manager, not having enough cash for a refund, waiting for a fax from the third party confirming I had paid...etc, etc). In the end, she redirected me, rather rudely, to a clerk and I was paid back my refund.

However, right across from the front desk were two rental car desks. I chose the Thrifty Car Rental and I can't speak highly enough about the wonderful treatment I got from the lady who took care of me. For starters, she apologized that she only had a car that hadn't been cleaned yet with a "would I be okay with a 25% discount?". Also, since I was renting at 10:00 am and returning the car at 9:00 pm the next day, she would only count that as one day, since it involved the weekend. Wow!

Our room in the main tower was just fine. Actually, it was very large and well appointed. Have a great trip!

My advice to you is - don't go. I found the rooms to be shabby, and they smelled musty. In my opinion, the bathrooms need to be completly redone.

The food was fair, and the specialty restaurants were good. The beach was great, and snorkeling was good here. You need water shoes, though.

The staff seemed unfriendly. And we changed rooms three times trying to get air conditioning. We finally gave up and got a fan from the lobby.

This place was perfect for us. Visited: March 2005
Posted by debkobe
I didn't expect much from this place based on reviews. I guess we just got lucky, and had the best vacation!

The room was nice and spacious. Everything was modern enough, very clean and well-maintained. Service was a little laid back, but that was appreciated. I prefer not to be completely catered to, but I love having someone there when I really want them, which is exactly how it seemed.

The food there was from funky to amazingly yummy. All in all, they did a really good job in variety and quality. The specialty restaurants were of course really tasty, but it was nice to have the variety of the buffet. Oh, the beach grill in the afternoon rocked.

There were plenty of activities. Their pools and beach were lots of fun. We mostly went diving. The dive shop did a good job there, too.

We got married here and I am so happy we did. They did everything they could to make it memorable, intimate and different and I really appreciated all they did. The pictures speak for how happy we were.

I can't wait to come back here. This was a trip I didn't want to end.

The island was nice, but the hotel was bad. Visited: February 2005
Posted by dkeltz
I've just returned from Breezes Curacao a few weeks ago and had to say it really wasn't as wonderful as they made it out in their brochure.

My room (#8306) really could have used a total makeover. The tiles were stained and cracked, and the faucet in the washroom was broken. The bed was leaning to one side, and the whole room smelled of mold. The view on the balcony was great, but I really couldn't enjoy it much as the metal furniture out there was hard on the bottom.

The activities were really fun, though. I tried almost everything. One day I went for a beginners kayak lesson, and the staff person told me "just don't hit the rocks". If you go, try the Hobie Cat. It was a lot of fun. The staff did the sailing, the guests are just along for the ride.

If you don't like walking on shells and rocks, I strongly suggest you wear water shoes. You will be much more comfortable if you do.

The food, as mentioned, was okay but not great. Be very careful what you eat at the main buffett. A few times I saw insects crawling on the cheese. The staff in the dining room didn't seem really interested in helping out. A few times we had to go and get our own flatware and glasses. They were usually standing around talking to each other and ignorning the guests.

The Italian and Japanese restaurants were really good, so you would need to book early as they filled up fast. I enjoyed them much better than the main buffett.

The evening entertainment was okay, but once it was over there was not much to do. The disco only had one CD that was any good. The disco was usually dead most nights.

The only tour I did was the city tour, and it was really interesting and informative. They took us around the island and gave us an overview and some of the history of Curacao. If you're going to town on your own, it's good to know.

There was also a Jeep tour, but you should be aware that you will be the one driving the jeep. They don't tell you this when you sign up.

Beware of the food here! Visited: February 2005

Overall, the island was nice, and the property was good. However, the food was horrible! I ate at the buffet and got food poisoning. It was terrible! The food service employees were rude also.

I go to the Caribbean every year, and this was the worst experience I have ever had. If you are thinking about visiting this resort, think again!

The weather was absolutely perfect! Visited: March 2004
Posted by w_j_sauer
We thought the food was fine: lots of choice and varied restaurants. They provided extensive entertainment if guests wanted to participate. Considering that this was a non-tipping place, the service was fairly good.

The snorkeling was fabulous; with many, many species of colorful fish very close by. The trampoline and rock climbing was fun and gave kids (and adults) an opportunity to try something different. Kayaks, paddleboats, and a ride in the Hobie Cat were all included.

Our room was fine and had a spacious balcony overlooking the pool area. There was a musty smell to the room and mold was evident in the bathroom, though.

The beach shoreline was not great, and water shoes were needed because of the sharp coral. All in all, it was a good holiday!

It was a great resort, but an ugly island. Visited: November 2003
Posted by Jackieshamrock
My boyfriend and I spent the week of Noember 1st at Breezes after reading many reviews online. We have traveled to a lot of all-inclusive resorts on other islands and prefer them to struggling to find a decent restaurant for each meal.

The food was above average for all-inclusive, and they had an incredible Japanese restaurant. The Italian restaurant needed a lot of help. The wait staff didn't seem know which end was up and didn't even know what was on the menu.

The main restaurant was all buffet and the food was great. I usually hate buffets, so this was a very pleasant surprise. Getting a waitress to notice us to get water was another matter.

We're used to tipping at all-inclusives, and Breezes didn't allow that so the staff didn't seem to work to please anyone. They wandered over to our table when the moment suited them.

The beach bar served burgers and things. It was very handy, but they tended to run out of supplies and didn't bother to refill them until the next day - even though it was a quick walk to the pool bar.

I suggest you request the Plover or Royal buildings as I found these the best, cleanest, and with thebest views. Plus, it would be quite a hike to the restaurants and nightly entertainment. Our room was a huge beachfront room with king bed, large balcony. It was very clean with an incredible view.

Around the pool was where all the action was - day and night, so if you're looking for a quiet, relaxing vacation, move down to the beach. But pack your reef walkers because you have to walk over large amounts of coral, stone and shells to get in and out of the water. Then, the water drops right off to very deep and you can quickly swim out to a man-made reef with lots of colorful fish. The snorkel equipment was very new, too. And they raked the beach every evening.

Most guests were Dutch or Venezuelan, which was great. I don't like going away and sitting with a bunch of other Bostonians.

If you're looking for a picturesque island, Curacao is not it! We kept laughing from the airport to the hotel, because it was extremely ugly - a huge oil refinery, the Amstel brewery, traffic conjesting the roads spewing diesel fumes. It was just horrible.

They made Willemsted look lovely where the ships arrived, but walk a couple of blocks back and it's run down again. But drive out west and it's mountain covered in cactus dropping down to beautiful beaches. We had a great time, but I'd never go back.

Very Mediocre, try a nicer resort Visited: May 2003
Posted by breaker
My wife and I stayed here for four nights, and thought that this resort was a far cry from elegant or glamourous as we thought. We may have been spoiled by Grand Lido Braco, or The Ritz Carlton, both in Jamaica. We had lots of fun in Curacao, going to the caves, aquarium, and the ostrich farm, but I would not suggest this resort. Some staff seemed to be annoyed with their jobs, and only a few seemed truly happy to be there. Our room was decent the first night, but was small and needed an update. We asked if another room was available the second night and were moved to a newer building that had much larger rooms, fridge, microwave, sitting area, and better ocean views. The food was fair at best, with birds eating at will from the bread table. The buffet typically had only one item that I liked enough to eat and full from. (And I am not a picky eater)The beach is full of little pebbles and the drop-off into the water is so fast that there is no water to romp around in. (probably a Curacao thing and not the resorts fault) We did not have the problem with kids, which is what I feared most when we booked here, but here is my best advice. Find a higher rated resort to stay with and have a great time in Curacao.

We were relaxed, and enjoyed good service and perfect weather. Visited: January 2003
Posted by conroro
We just returned from a stay at Breezes. Make sure you renew your vows. Four of us renewed our vows and the staff went out of their way to make it perfect - and it was.

There was no rain, but it was a bit windy. Without the wind, it would have been too hot, though. It was sunny every day.

The staff was wonderful and very helpful. Be sure to see Shernett in the Pastafari Restaurant, Eva at the hospitality desk and Nadeska and Jeanette at the reception desk. We had lots of fun, good food, and met wonderful people all around.

If you don't like to walk stairs, request a first-floor room in one of the U-shaped units. We stayed in the Flamingo building and did not mind the stairs (third floor) and did not mind the walking to the main building for food and drinks. The only complaint we had was that it was too short of a vacation.

A very busy resort. Visited: October 2002
Posted by leecarol
We held our annual family reunion, 12 adults and 4 grandchildren at Breezes Resort, October 2002. If you enjoy a busy resort with constant activities from morning until midnight, you will like Breezes. As Grandparents, we did not enjoy this resort. The loud music played from 11:00am until past midnight. The music is so loud that it is hard to sleep at night. We had to use earplugs in order to sleep, however, the younger people did enjoy the resort with the hourly activities, ping-pong tournament, volleyball, bingo, etc.

The food was acceptable, not great. There were guards all over the place keeping out the locals. Snorkeling off the beach was okay, nothing great compared to other islands we have visited. The rooms were good; we had no complaints. Service was slow but pleasant. This is not an isolated resort location, as it is located on the edge of the main town and you can see the oil refinery and smoke from your room. I think that there are too many other nice islands to visit, therefore, I would not return to Breezes or Curacao.

We had an awesome vacation. All three couples said they would visit again.

Everything about the trip was good. The people were all very nice, the food was scrumptious and our hotel rooms were very comfortable. There was an activity going on all the time. You could relax by the pools and beach, or go on many tours that were offered. We went snorkeling off the big pirate ship - it was breathtaking! Thanks to everybody at the Breezes! I would recommend it for guests of all ages!

Absolutely Disappointing Visited: August 2002
Posted by kpizzagalli
My family and I were terribly disappointed with Breezes Curacao. Upon arrival, it took 45 minutes to check in and then had to take our own bags to a musty set of connecting rooms. The faucet broke in my hand and the bathtub was cracked and caked with mold. The staff didn’t want to change our room, but after several phone calls gave us a room with broken sliding glass doors that had to be locked with pieces of wood. While moving our bags again, the elevator broke and my husband had to climb out to the floor above. The bed linens were never changed and always filled with sand and one of our beds had a broken bed frame.

The restaurants were horrible. Jimmy’s Buffet was the same food day after day and you had to watch the birds above you so you didn’t get splattered on. Stray cats wandered around Jimmy’s Buffet as well. The service was horrible; we had to fill our own water glasses and find napkins and silverware by ourselves. If you spoke the native tongue it seemed the wait staff was more congenial. The Beach Hut that served hot dogs, hamburgers and fries looked dirty to me and they often ran out of their stock. They had served hamburgers on hot dog rolls many times. My family and I had to eat at a neighboring restaurant, Baywatch, because we ended up getting sick.

The only pleasant part was the Ocean Encounters Diving Center. The gentlemen there were pleasant and patient while instructing. The diving program was the only highlight of the entire trip.

August was definitely off-season for Curacao and it seemed like the wait staff and service was cut back. Everyday at the pool, cups and straws would accumulate and blow into the pool by the trade winds. I found myself cleaning up the cups and straws from the pool so my children didn’t have to swim amongst the trash.

Although with security ever-present locals would wander over and use the beach and outer lying pools of the resort. They were never asked to vacate, but enjoyed the resort for free and were extremely loud and annoying.

The kids’ club is catered to the very young ages of 2-5. My kids, 8-12, didn’t go to Curacao to watch video movies over and over in a small room the size of a closet and to play repetitive games of Simon Says.

If you are looking for soft, white sandy beaches in Curacao, forget it. The beach was loaded with coral and almost impossible to walk on without water shoes. Breezes needs to spend a lot more money on updating this old, dilapidated hotel and training their staff.

Very, Very disappointed Visited: July 2002
Posted by wayne_thiessen
Stayed seven nights at Breezes and we were very, very disappointed.

There were so many problems. First, the resort is not isolated. Security was constantly challenging non-guests. It seemed that the far side of the resort, the "Flamingo" building where we stayed, was like day care for local kids because the resort allowed them to use part of the resort's enclosed beach. But a single security guard had to keep 20-30 kids and pre-teens from sneaking into the pools or onto the resort grounds. Needless to say, the noise level was more like a public pool than a resort. (We did not request to be moved to the other side of the resort because other guests told us that the disco, Hurricane, which was open every night until 3 am played music way too loudly.)

Second, the rooms were very small; the linens and towels were a notch above sandpaper; and hot water and water pressure were sporadic. The air conditioner had one setting, "Arctic", so we both ended up catching a cold!

Third, the buffet food was hit or miss, but mostly miss (breakfast and lunch are only buffet). For dinner you could have buffet or you could get a reservation for the two restaurants, Pastafari (Italian-like) and Munahana (Japanese-like). But there were only about 20 reservations at each location each night - way under capacity.

Fourth, only one bar was open! The web page says there are 5 bars, we counted 3 including a kid's area bar - but only the main bar was ever open. For guests at the far end of the resort getting a drink meant a 50 yard walk, each way.

Fifth, with only a few exceptions, the staff was horribly trained and inhospitable.

Sixth, the island is home to a massive oil refinery, from our door we could see thick black smoke and flames.

We had a non-refundable package, otherwise we would have left after day one.

Very nice Visited: April 2001
Posted by JimBrown
April is a great time to go to Curacao—not a drop of rain and hot!

The hotel was nice. The room we had was not great, as it backed onto the main road. It was very noisy for first couple of days, then we got used to it. Try and get a room closer to the beach on one of the end units of the u-shaped hotel setup. The newer part of the hotel is nice, the rooms were much bigger, but the view was not great. Most rooms faced to the side, so no real ocean view—just a partial view.

The food was quite good at all of the restaurants. The only annoying aspect of the restaurants is that you are handed a bill with every meal. You have to sign even if you are on the all-inclusive plan and there was a big space for the tip. The staff was mostly bored and listless and if you did not leave a tip they noticed and remembered. You can leave a tip at the end of your stay, if you choose instead of every meal, which was what we did.

The beach was nice, but the sand was full of coral and hard on the feet. We rented a car, which was not too expensive (about $50 Canadian a day). Gas was $2.00 US a litre. We traveled to many beaches, which were all lovely. But the sand was not sand rather ground up coral, more or less depending on the beach. Jeremy was about the worst beach with great chunks of coral. Get water shoes!

Do not miss the ostrich farm. It was a bit trying to get to, but worth the trip.

The snorkeling was excellent just about everywhere.

All in all, it was a very good vacation.

A great dive site. Visited: April 2001
Posted by jandebyland
We went to Princess with our local dive shop. We stayed in one of the time shares in the tower by the dive shop, which is under new management and was doing a great job. Mark was doing a great job with his service to divers. It was very safety oriented, but experienced divers can dive their own profiles using computers within shop guidelines. We had a wonderful time. Eat at Seaside Terrace and Hook's Hut. You also must dive the sites, Mushroom Forest, Superior Producer and Habitat’s House Reef.
