4.0 stars We enjoyed Sea View Apartment. Visited: January 2007

Travel in Dominica requires a car and the ability to drive on the left on primarily single lane roads. If you can do that and have a true sense of adventure, you are ready to travel independently in a unique environment.

The Dominica's SeaView Apartments, a part of Calabishie Lodges in Calabishie, offer a kitchen, sitting room with TV, and bed and bath. There is also a private rear balcony and shared ocean view balcony overlooking miles of the Atlantic, Guadaloupe and its islands.

A ten-minute walk to the Lodges gets you to a reasonably priced breakfast and dinner. Free wake-up (4:00a.m.) is provided by the neighborhood rooster.

The apartments are an excellent base for exploring NE Dominica. The nearby Woodford Hill beach is one of the nicest on the island. There are hikes to hot and cold sulfur springs and to the hills of Cabrits.

I stayed in Dominica at Calibishie Lodges for a few days. The people were very friendly.

It was close to the airport, and was nice to drop off for a few days and relax.

It was a nice small place, and the staff was very friendly.

This guesthouse is worthy of its great reputation. The location is breathtaking - nestled in well-maintained gardens and overlooking the village of Calibishie, the beach, and the distant mountains.

The rooms and grounds are well-kept. Kris and Linda are always available to provide services. Also, Kris is extremely knowledgeable about the island attractions - he will answer any questions that you have, and can provide directions, guides or excursions.

1.0 stars We feel that the new owners are ruining this gem. Visited: February 2006
Posted by jessejackson
We stayed at the lodges in February 2006 and were very disappointed. I should say how much we loved Dominica and its people. I should also say we were warned by fellow travelers prior to arriving that we should be prepared for a very "uptight" experience with the new owners. However, we did not expect our other issues.

Issues:

1) We arrived to find the screens in our room in disrepair. Mosquitoes were not a huge issue, but nonetheless significant.

2) Then, we found the sink in the bathroom had a leak.

3) Chris, the owner, responded by using duct tape to fix both and was remarkably curt and unapologetic. Needless to say, the sink never got fixed. Fortunately, we had the kitchen sink.

4) The owners appeared to be dishonest about the menu. One night the special was “red snapper”. It was pretty clear they served us tuna. There is a substantial difference between the two. I should add that red snapper is very difficult - if not impossible - to find on the island. There is lots of delicous tuna and marlin. Pearls in Rousseau rules. What a beautiful person.

Another night, we ordered the pasta with crab. I had also not seen a lot of local crab on the menu and was skeptical. So I asked and was told absolutely they used fresh local crab. The dish arrived and it was unmistakably the imported fake crabmeat that is made with halibut using red dye. After that, we dined in town at some of local establishments. We found nice people and honest food.

5) On the day of departure, Chris’s wife came to the door at 6:00 am and woke up my two-year-old to question me about when I planned on checking out. Please understand, we had been here for four days as we had paid a deposit, and they had my credit card on file. Without the substantial deposit, we would have paid our bill and left much earlier. Chris and his wife had complained about having guests leave without paying, but their heavy-handed approach to this was unforgivable.

Needless to say, I would highly recommend spending time in the North. I would absolutely steer clear of the lodges and its owners.

5.0 stars Dominica is a wonderful island. Visited: January 2006

I heard about this island from a friend who told me about Calibishie Lodges. I found it on this web site, and I booked at Dominica's Sea view apartments through Calibishie Lodges.

I found a peaceful place here. It was a beautiful view in a perfect location. The evenings were great. I found a nice breeze every night, and I could see the ocean from my bed.

This was an incredible island.

We've just returned to Darwin having had the most delightful "Dominican " experience - in great measure thanks to Calibishie Lodges.

Linda and Chris are the most accomplished customer service staff who not only bring efficiency, but that elusive ingredient - genuine warmth - to the care and keeping of their guests. Linda and Chris are the delightful and always concerned hosts...our wish was their command.

The Lodges are charming, impeccable, and an oasis which has just enough "country" and just enough "civilization" to allow a visitor the best of both worlds.

Breakfasts are delicious; beds are comfy; and the hospitality is beyond compare!

Calibishie Lodges is a great place to stay on Dominica. The staff goes over and above to make your stay an enjoyable one.
The northeast side of the island is the island's hidden secret.

5.0 stars Calibishie is "paradise found". Visited: March 2005

We spent almost two weeks in Dominica in March. I had wanted to visit for many years and had very high expectations. I knew it would be beautiful and lush, but I was not prepared. After visiting almost every island in the Caribbean over the past 25 years and loving all of them, Dominica felt the most like Nirvana to me.

We stayed at the Calibishie Lodges, a special hotel and guest house located in the village and very close to beautiful beaches and attractions. We did not do a lot, but Dominica had many excursions and activities.

Some travelers hiked around or through the mountains and stayed at different places during their stay. We, on the other hand, did not leave Calibishie very often. Our lives have been stressful lately and we mostly wanted to relax. We met many travelers though, from Germany, France, and the U.S. Chris and Win helped everyone to experience the island fully, and we were the only “slackers” on the island it seemed.

The owner and management were wonderful and treated us like family. From our first minute at the Lodges, Clem made us welcome and comfortable. At night, Nigel and the culinary magicians offered many wonderful meals – one can get very fat at the Calibishie. I mostly ate fish that was delicious and fresh, while my husband, who does not care for seafood, ate lots of local curries. The fruit salads in the morning were so delicious – the best I have ever tasted.

Some nights we walked to the Tropical Café, and Marie made dinner while Stephen argued politics with Mr. Nixon and the other villagers. I got to play with baby Cameron. Other nights we went across the road to Kathy’s Coconuts for burgers and Nick’s bush rum. Kathy is from Canada and made us feel like long lost friends. Other nights we walked to Winston’s and sat on the ocean deck - the fish was always fresh and meals plentiful.

The most wonderful thing about Calibishie was how friendly the community was and how everyone made me feel very sad to leave. But I know we will be going back soon.

We did visit Roseau, the Carib Territory, Portsmouth, the Indian River, and traveled through the mountain road. But mostly we went to Batabu Beach and relaxed. Beach #1, Point Baptiste, and Woodford Hill Beach were also fun. If you go to Woodford, be prepared to help the local fisherman carry his boat and be rewarded with the sweetest fruit you have ever tasted.

Nigel, thank you for making your special rum punches and sharing so much with us. Thanks, too, for introducing us to the many exotic fruits of the island. Thanks for the St. Patrick’s Day Party too, it will always be one of the most special to me. Maybe we can stay up for disco next time.

This is a terrific place to stay if you decide to visit Dominica.

The rooms and surroundings were clean and well prepared. The staff was most helpful, kind and courteous. The food was also great.

It was a place that guests would feel at home, and it was very relaxing. For us, it was as though we were staying among family and friends.

Nigel and Clement were exceptional and a great help with information about Dominica. This was an excellent place.

We thought that Calibishie Lodges were perfect in every way. The rooms were kept spotless with towels and bed linen changed every two to three days. The food in the restaurant was varied enough to keep us happy for two weeks. We kept meaning to eat at other places, but we liked the atmosphere and the food so much that we never did.

The view from upper lodge number six (where we stayed) was awesome. I must have taken over 50 photos of it in different lights. The views from the other lodges would also be amazing.

Other things we remember with joy: watching humming birds while we ate breakfast, the sounds of the crickets and frogs in the evenings, looking down over the village as it came to life in the mornings, hearing and watching the sea. It was amazing that we managed to tear ourselves away.

However, what made the Lodges so very special were the people. The staff was all helpful, kind, fun, interesting to chat with etc., etc. By the time we left, it was like leaving dear friends. Nigel especially, made our stay very special. He was a great guide on our trips, gave us the confidence to jump into the Chaudiere Pool, helped us over rivers on the way to the Victoria Falls, and helped us learn lots about Dominica.

The people we met in Calibishie village and everywhere else we went in Dominica were friendly and welcoming.

This is a small, beautifully situated hotel in the far northern reaches of Dominica. One must have a car (a Jeep) to enjoy it.

The food is very good and nicely served; privacy is great, views are superb -- and the concern of the staff is heartening. Calibishie Lodges gets very high marks!

I stayed in both the Calibishie Lodges and their guest house.

I had a great view, but the beauty from this island was really great. It was as if I had gone back in time. Everyone I met on the street was friendy.

Also, the owners were great. They seemed to have a nice spirit about how to deal with people. Every person I encountered here from the beginning (with the booking procees) was very helpful. The staff was great - it was just like I had found a second family. In addition, Bob was a great tour guide. Thanks Bob!

It felt like three weeks only took a week here. You must come to Dominica and spend time with the people here. They have so much information and are really great.

This is the nicest place I have ever stayed at and I have seen everything from ridiculously expensive five-star resorts to small hotels all over the Caribbean.

Here they provided beautiful modern apartments, excellent food, nice staff, in a nice little town. Just a few minutes' walk through the rainforest in back of the lodges were red rock cliff formations jutting out into the sea punctuated by secluded black sand beaches.

By far, it is the nicest (and most fairly priced) place you will find anywhere.

In Dominica, you will be captured by all that nature awaits to share with you from the quiet shadows of the wind brushing against your skin and the soothing sounds of the birds that quiets your spirit to the emerald green of the surroundings and awesome trails of adventure longing to be explored.

If you are looking for a 'Heavenly Paradise' on earth, I strongly advise you to stay at the Calibishie Lodges. It is home - and I
stress home - away from home with an atmosphere that helps sooth your spirit and gives a feeling of peace and relaxation.

All your needs are met here. The warmth begins with Chris
(the owner) whom I was priviledged to meet. He isn't just down to earth, but someone you could find a friend in. And believe me, he gives good advice and is always willing to listen.

The he staff is also always cheerful, warm and ready to assist in
every way. Here they provide good food, great rooms and excellent service.

Now this was simply my experience, but it was awesome and I highly reccommend to you the Calibishie Lodge because it is indeed the greatest on the island of Dominica. Experience it for yourself.

We stayed at the Calibishie Lodges for ten days and it was just fantastic. The staff was very friendly - always smiling and willing to help.

The food was great and finger licking good. There was just so much to do on the island - it was just fun, fun, fun. The people were also so nice and friendly.

I definitely recommend the Calibishie Lodges and Dominica as first choice for your holiday. You will never regret it.

Many European people confuse Dominica with the Dominican Republic 1500 km further on in the Caribbean area, but after visiting both, the difference is obvious!

Dominica has a paradisiacal radiation which moves you deeply immediately when you arrive in the small airport. The Calibishie Lodges offers you all public utilities and delicious food, that's more than welcome after a day 'Jungle Tracking '.

Words fail me to describe the rest of the island with its countless sorts of fruit, waterfalls, mountains, rare parrots, natural jacuzzis, idyllic beaches and a fantastic climate. My conclusion: paradise does exist! Keep it up Chris!

5.0 stars This is a Caribbean dreamland! Visited: June 2004

The Caribbean of your imagination lives at this hotel. Lushly green, with an extraordinarily attentive and friendly staff, rural and quiet, this charming little hotel was exceptional.

We came here with our children and it was wonderful. The hotel staff, with their matching tropical uniforms, was friendly and open. The hotel grounds were like being in a rainforest, but intricately manicured and immaculately clean, surrounded by thick green leaves and palm trees.

Calibishie was in the middle of jagged, green tropical mountains. The mountain tops we could see from our balcony were usually covered with mist; absolutely lovely.

The hotel was new and gorgeous, with local stones and rocks inlaid into the construction. The pool sat right under the open-air restaurant/bar—convenient for people who ordered one of the varied rum punches! Swim in the pool and you’re surrounded by palm fronds and flowers. There was tropical wildlife everywhere around us, birds, lizards, tiny frogs, and hummingbirds.

The rooms were a sort of tropical style in decor, and very clean. We were greeted by the owner, Chris, who was from Belgium, whose roots became immediately obvious with the graceful old-world European charm and attentiveness with which he treated all of us.

This was like a European hotel, placed in the Caribbean of 200 years ago. As Chris told us upon arrival, they treat their guests like family. And that was not just a line–it was true. This was by far the most attentive staff I have ever seen in any hotel anywhere, a tightly disciplined (yet beautifully relaxed) crew.

Your kids will be exceptionally well-treated and spoiled by the staff. I recommend doing the breakfast/dinner inclusive deal. This allowed us to get a great meal in before our day trips and tours, and a big dinner when we got back.

Buy plenty of the local Kubuli beer in the village and keep it in the refrigerator in the room. There were many choices on the menu, but most was Caribbean-style. We usually stuck with the daily special. The cook was very skilled and had her art form down pat.

Guests could arrange trips through Chris. Do so before you leave, so he has time to set it up.

Also, you will never visit a more beautiful beach than Batabou Beach. It was “Swiss Family Robinson” come to life. You have to get off the road and walk about 20 minutes through the jungle to get there, but its beauty quite literally took my breath away, several times. That beach was the highlight of our trip.

Bring sun lotion on this trip! The water was crystal clear and warm, the sand like sugar. There were green mountains rising around us on three sides. The kids liked this beach the best, also. This trip was magical. Go to this place! It’s what you’ve been dreaming of.

I had a great time in Dominica.

The rooms were clean, the food was good (very important ) and the people were friendly. The evenings at the pool included rum and good music - I wish it could always be like that.

We made a few excursions and they were most rewarding - Boiling Lake and the whales were two things everyone should see.

The island was very nice and there was a lot to see!
Relax and enjoy - there is no stress and no hurry.
This is what life is all about.
