Q: My girlfriend and i are planning a trip to the dominican republic and we were just wondering has anyone had a bad experience i.e being robbed or any other sort of crime? Answer

A: The resorts have security guards posted, but when you walk along the beach off the resort you must not wear jewelry or bring money or anything expensive with you. One times when I was in the Dominican a couple of people from my resort were robbed on the beach. She was covered in jewelry and carrying a purse. I also had my bathing suit stolen from my clothesline (at ground level, behind a low fence). Just be smart and you should be OK. You aren't in North America and things are not regulated like in North America. You have to use your own common sense and remember that you are in a poor area. Most people were wonderful and I loved my Dominican vacations.

A: You are somewhat safer than in a big city in the US, but the Caribbean is not crime free. If you stay around tourist areas you should be fine.
