Sure, the beach was fantastic. The pools were great, and the hotel was huge. However, the people were another story. I don't think I've ever seen people who looked more miserable. Some of the men were nice. I suggest you tip everyone with single dollars, and you'll be fine.
The bad experience was that the hotel had bed bugs that fed off our blood until I realized they weren't "sand fleas" (as I was told). I saw a show on TV about bed bugs before I left, so I knew what they looked like. I saw one at 5 am when I walked into my room. It was at the end of my bed on the covers (they only come out at night). It disappeared so fast I couldn't catch it.
I was curious as to why they scheduled fumigation hours during the week? They actually left a note informing us they would fumigate our room the next morning. We cancelled it because we wanted to sleep in. Big mistake!
In addition,, there was a man who would enter our room different times. I don't know how he came in. He would say he was fixing a lightbulb or something, but we never called to have anything fixed. He would seem to come in during hours when people would probably be gone from their rooms (out to the beach or pool).
I am very suspicious, as we had an Adidas jacket stolen from our room. One night we came back to our room, and noticed that our pillows were taken off the bed and put under the chairs. On the last night, the covers were off and put under the desk. It was bizarre.
Another downside was that it was hard to get drinks at the poolside bar because it took so long. There was only one pool with a swim up bar, and it was on the French side of the resort (far from the beach). They had "sides", meaning they grouped us based on what country we were from.
There was one waitress walking around the pool to serve drinks. I think I saw her once maybe twice during my stay. The last day I was there, I gave her US dollars, and my drinks were always refilled as I sat by the pool. Basically, bring lots of US dollars in singles, and they will love you.
The vendors pretty much forced guests to buy something. When you look at something, they notice it, and then they take it and put it in an envelope and say "Here, take it, come back with money" and when you say no, they say "Yeah, yeah take it go!". They make you feel bad and feel like you have to buy it! I didn't, but still they were annoying.
It was a resort mostly for families and kids I think, but I'd still be careful about the bed bugs.
I suggest you find another hotel if you go to the Dominican Republic.
