4.0 stars It was fair. Visited: July 2007

I found the staff to be very helpful, friendly and attentive. The scenery was beautiful, and the food and entertainment were great.

The only problem I encountered was the transportation services from the airport to the hotel. I had to pay a taxi $100.00 for transportation because the hotel did not provide the service. That was really discouraging and upsetting. We paid a lot of money for an all-inclusive vacation.

1.0 stars I thought it was disgusting. Visited: December 2006

An all-inclusive resort is exactly what this place is. You can get everything - including what I believe was prostitution! My boyfriend and I witnessed every night workers hooking up with the tourists at the disco and then leaving there alone with them. Following this, they would then sit at the pizza place, eat and then leave with there chosen tourist.

The employees ate, played, swam, partied, drank, and slept right on the resort. I personally found this disgusting. My friends who work at restaurants would not randomly sit down with customers and eat with them. A life guard does not swim for fun. You don’t party at the club when you’re working there, and you don’t sleep in the hotel you work at with customers.

On top of the entertainment workers, there was also the unforgettable maid service. My boyfriend and I stood outside of our room while our maid allowed other people to look inside our room. We decided not to say anything, and the next day we received a fruit plate and a free bottle of wine. This, I will admit, was nice - but also demeaning. Needless to say, we left her no tip!

The food at the buffet was awful. It was the same stuff every night, (my boyfriend and I spent a lot of time on the toilet!). The Bambu restaurant was excellent, and I enjoyed that very much. However, my favorite was La Rocka Grill. They made fantastic rice with baby shrimp.

The pizza place was amazing, and honestly, was the best pizza I have ever had. They were open late and stayed open all night long.

The beach and ocean where amazing. We spent every afternoon there, mainly because the swimming pool looked like it hadn’t been cleaned for over three years.

Along side the beach, there were little huts with things for sale. If I hadn’t been in another country, I would have punched the guy out who owned one of them. He was pushy, rude, and in my face. Because I did not speak Spanish, he seemed to think I was retarded! He tried to rip my boyfriend off almost $30.00.

We did, however, find a very cute store outside the resort about a five-minute walk. They had lots of souvenirs, snorkeling kits, and other things.

Another problem that we managed to avoid was that there was no money exchange place on the resort. You had to go to a local bank there! This did not seem like a smart idea. There was an ATM machine outside the resort, but it ran out of money! It was not filled the whole time we were in the Dominican.

3.0 stars Overall, this was a decent value. Visited: November 2006

Do yourself a favor and become a member of Wyndham-by-Request before you book a room at any Viva resort. As members (membership is free), we were immediately upgraded to a junior suite (ocean view) for the price of the basic room.

This is done upon arrival. Just ask to speak to the By-Request manager, Jose Luis, at the front desk. More importantly, as a By-Request member, you can make reservations for your entire stay as soon as you arrive. This is really a big deal, because each morning there will be a long line at Guest Services to book restaurants for that night. Reservations are really limited. In fact, by about 9:00 am, all the restaurants get full, and you will be stuck eating pizza or the buffet.

We ate at La Scala (Italian), Bambu (oriental) and Ibiza (temporary venue for Mexican while the original restaurant is being remodeled). We highly recommend La Scala. Given that 70% of the guests are from Italy/France, they have made this restaurant really good. There are good vegetarian choices, good main courses and desserts.

Vegetarian choices in the main buffet restaurant (lunch) were limited to pasta with tomato sauce, side veggies and fruit/dessert. Bambu was more Japanese than Chinese, so be aware not to expect the standard US Chinese fare. Also, there was nothing on the menu for vegetarians here (or in the Mexican restaurant).

The quality of food at the main buffet, La Yuca, was not great but reasonable. They offered good chicken and pork dishes, and varied fruit and dessert choices.

Overall, the biggest complaint we had was the service. Language was a big problem here compared to Mexico. Very, very little English was spoken. Because of the guest mix, Italian was fluently spoken by most staff. Even with the little Spanish we have picked up living in Florida and Texas, we had a really hard time.

Also, the staff tended to be rude and unhelpful, especially when they could not understand us. Note that drinks were mostly local brands - poor wine/beer. Tropical cocktails were above average. While most problems we had ended up being fixed, it meant going back to the Guest Service Manager or the By-Request Manager.

The snorkel trip was really good. It was about an hour of snorkeling and a 15-minute boat ride, plus gear for $10/pp. The beautiful white sand beaches and palm trees really made this location a tropical paradise. However, crowds detracted from the experience for us.

Overall, it was a decent value, but I would go back to Playa del Carmen in Mexico rather than here. We felt that the people in general and the staff were more friendly and accommodating in Mexico.

I paid all-inclusive top dollar, and it was awful.

The room was not nice at all; the food was horrible; and at the club, two employees asked me out.

I would never recommend this hotel to anyone.

3.0 stars I didn't think it was a big deal. Visited: December 2005

I came here with my boyfriend, and it was not what we expected.

The room was really ugly and empty. The bed was not confortable, either. Also, the pool was ugly, and the service was nothing special. Finally, the food was average.

We were here only two nights, traveling through the country, but I found it one of the best hotels I have stayed in Dominican Republic (and I´ve been there 15 times).

The rooms were nice, clean and comfortable. The soft drinks in the minibar were included, the food was one of the best I´ve found with great variety, and the service was very good. The beach was nice, and was also good for children as the water was not very deep.

I couldn´t tell anything about night activities as we were traveling with a baby, and I couldn´t tell about the restaurants. The only thing that may be criticized would be the pool which was a little bit small. But as the beach was right adjacent to the pool, who needed it?

I could recommend this hotel, and we are thinking of coming back the next year.

This is one of the best deals you'll ever get. The food, the beach and the people are all great. It is completely safe, and they cater to everyone from singles to families. Also, the rooms are good, clean and nice.

ive been there with my school friends from Caracas, Venezuela...for this reason we had never problems with the lenguage, but the animators are the worse...i think that they want to have the whole girls on the country...and would fight with customers for that reason...money was stolen from the rooms by cleanning staff...i think that it was a nice place but the service must change

4.0 stars A beautiful property, a great value, we had a great holiday! Visited: April 2002

We came here with two other females and one 14-year-old daughter. A great time was had by all.

You could do as much - or as little - as you wanted day or night. Merengue dancing by the pool was the best, thanks to staff like Niko, Paolo and Marko. The night time entertainment was varied and quality.

We are glad we stayed at the Palace. It was a little fancier and the meals were presented better and with more variety than the Gardens. If you want among the action all the time, stay at the Gardens. We had the best of both worlds as we walked over to the Gardens at night (a 10-minute walk along lit paths). Take note, if you stay at the Gardens, you cannot go to the Palace, but you can move between both if you stay at the Palace.

These sister properties had amazing grounds. We are still talking about them. The rooms were very clean, but more like a three star property. Everything else made up for it. And considering we were only in them to shower or sleep, it was a minor detail.

We would all go back in a heartbeat. Oh, something else- just outside the hotel there were lots of little shops and a cigar store. Walking in that area was safe. It was a big plus to not be hassled or propositioned on the beach as it was private. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed.
