4.0 stars THis was an excellent hotel complex, but the food was not quite good enough. Visited: April 2006

I arrived April 2006 from Punta Cana. The transfer was two-and-a-half hours. It was rather tedious, but there were lots of sugar cane and interesting towns. The resort was just off the "motorway", and taxi was 60 pounds return for two people. Coco Tours was very effective.

I was concerned about previous reviews, but my first impressions of Barcelo Capella were very good. They had wonderful gardens, the room was large, clean and tidy, with fresh flowers. The bathrom was slightly scruffy, but was all there. They provided air conditioning, and an effective multichannel TV that had very good films for in between times.

Also, the rooms were well insluated against noise. We were in 4000. It was rather a block-like building compared to hacienda style of the others. But it was allegedly the newest.

The showers were powerful and hot, the balcony was lockable, and there was a good safe in the room. Room drinks were stocked up every day, and the housekeeping staff (Angela) was very friendly. Only tip at end if you are pleased with the service.

The grounds had great flowers, shrubs, peacocks, flamingoes, and hundreds of friendly and harmless lizards. The beach was very clean. Wear flipflops into the sea. The lagoon was wonderful for swimming. There was also a good range of fish to see (octopus).

Vendors called on a regular basis. Saying "No, gracias" was fine. I was never hassled. There were plenty of watchful security staff.

There was a good variety of bars. The service was friendly, and the food was good. The lunch was the best, and dinner was fine - but not five-star. I did not drink local water, so I had no problems (unlike many horror stories I've heard).

Bohio restaurant was very good. Beach Olas Bar was very classy, but I did encounter local wildlife during my meal! The service there was very good.

Beach towels were free, and there were lots of activities for the keen (not me).

In summary, if you come here, don't expect gourmet food. I would recommend it, though.

3.0 stars We thought Barcelo Capella was horrible. Visited: February 2006

This place wasn't that bad, but we did have mice and cockroaches in our room.

The food was okay. The people who were trying to sell things on the beaches were annoying.

After a while, it became boring. Also, the service at the front desk was horrible. They didn't seem to care about the guests at all.

1.0 stars This place was terrible! Visited: January 2006

When we stayed here, we saw rats and a cockroach. In our room, we found a sock under the bed that was there since who knows how long. That was proof that cleaning was done very often at all.

We found bugs in our food (flies). Also, we couldn't go in the beach, because it was too rocky.

This was the worst trip in my life, and I travel four times a year.

3.0 stars We enjoyed our Barcelo Capella adventure. Visited: March 2005

Upon arrival, we found that not many employees at the resort spoke English, which proved to put a hinderance on much of our stay. The staff was extremely friendy, though, and were happy people who did their best to make our stay enjoyable.

What has been written about the musty smell in the rooms was true. But it was not a problem when we cranked up the AC and left the window open for a while.

The property was absolutely gorgeous, but the beach was not the best. Most of it was very rocky and full of coral and kelp. There were few fish to observe while snorkeling.

Yes, there were pesky beach vendors, but they were very polite and didn't hound guests too much.

Make sure to bring bug spray! At night especially, there were hordes of mosquitoes that left annoying and itchy bites.

One problem we had was a lack of hot water and pressure. After calling about it, it was fixed two days later.

It was quite unorganized. It took us a few days to get into the swing of things. At certain restaurants guests need reservations (Chez Fontaine, Las Olas, etc) and it was hard to figure out details like that since we were not fluent in Spanish.

Like most resorts, the property itself was beautiful, but if you step off its boundaries, there was much poverty.

Also, stack up on needed items, a small bottle of suntan lotion was $25! And, don't drink the water. You will get sick!

Despite these negatives, Barcelo Capella Beach Resort was a pleasant experience for us.

This was the best place I have ever been to, and the best place to get married. It was gorgeous!

The manager was a very nice man who organized everything properly. We could not have even dreamed of something better than what we experienced at Barcelo Capella Beach Resort!

This is a beautiful hotel, with excellent food and drinks. The food is fresh and they offer a huge variety. Also, the staff is extremely friendly, and they try hard to accommodate.

There were bothersome beach vendors, though.

There was no need to leave the resort, but numerous excersions were offered. The rooms were beautiful - even without an ocean view. There was no need either, we were only in there to sleep and change.

I wish I could have stayed longer. I would recommend this resort without question.
